Your Droid screenshot is off. Try typing

Fixed. Thank you for the tip. Needless to say new users should not have
to do this for Droid to look ok on their screens.

Anyway the wiki has been updated.

No problem. :) I think it's GNOME not being able to auto-update the font

[ubuntu-art] How to provide more alternate wallpapers without influencing CD size requirements

2008-07-07 Thread Brian Fleeger
Hi all,

This is an idea I had to provide users with more alternate wallpapers without
influencing the install CD's footprint. If this is too off-topic for an
art-team posting, please let me know and direct me to where this idea does
belong. At least it is tangentially related to Ubuntu's art experience.

In addition to providing a couple extra default alternate wallpapers, Canonical
could host a special wallpaper repository the same way it does with synaptic
and install/uninstall.

Scenario: Grandma May is using her Ubuntu for the first time and wants to
change the wallpaper. She right clicks the desktop, sees change wallpaper,
and clicks through. After seeing there are only 4 or 5 alternates (I am still
optimistic), she notices the Get More Ubuntu Wallpapers button in the bottom
right-hand corner of the nautilus window. (if granny didn't have an internet
connection, the box would be grayed out and unclickable) She clicks it and is
connected to a repository of pre-selected Ubuntu art works. In the repo, she
sees small icons, and can mouse-over/single click to see larger previews.
After checking the boxes for the wallpapers she wants, Grammy clicks Install
Wallpapers and is done. Users could happily choose from hundreds of specially
chosen backgrounds which have been selected for their color/composition to go
well with the new Ubuntu default theme, instead of googling for hours for free
wallpapers. Backgrounds could
be arranged by topic, with options like Select All Nature Wallpapers, etc.

Canonical could thereby 1) redefine the user experience, 2) gain more control
over Ubuntu's aesthetic appeal, and 3) streamline the CD install image all in
one swoop.

Is this a good idea/something that could be passed on to relevent parties?

Actually, since it would be hosted by Canonical as opposed to Gnome, this would
not be a fork. Gnome gets used by many distros, but only Canonical would want
to control their unique user experience. Therefore it would only be
appropriate for such a feature to be Ubuntu-specific, i.e. down-stream.

Incorrect. If the idea is to add things (a button or what have you) to
an app for users to click on that's a code fork. Staying as close to
upstream is always the name of the game.

A add-om package in the repos is the way to go. Trick is, letting
 people
 know about it.

Doesn't the add-on pack route expect users to have a-priori knowledge of how
to use Ubuntu and Linux in general? Further, add-on packs make it sound a
little too close to Ubuntu SP1.

It also defeats the whole idea of user selected content (since it would be an
all or nothing pack) -- and the user would not know what he/she is getting in
advance, even if they did know to look for it.

The interesting part of my idea is that it would really enhance the user
experience to be able to browse and choose exactly what you want from a
selection where EVERYTHING is guaranteed to look beautiful. It would be an
opportunity to win user mindshare.

Its just an idea though, and I don't take it personally if you like it or not
-- just something for you to consider. If anyone does think it is worth
passing along, please do so.

[ubuntu-art] Why Wallpapers? And Let's Get Started!

2008-07-07 Thread Salane Ashcraft
I have noticed a lot of discussion by this art team about wallpapers.

Why? Its not like most people who change wallpapers are going to not
be looking for good ones on the internet, its a moot point.

Instead we need to focus on fonts, icons, and themes. I have posted 2
wikis, yet limited discussion has been created. The reason things dont
happen, and the reason there isnt more asked of the art team is
because we have never done anything for the most part. We talk - and
talk- and talk- yet no action is taken.

This is how things will work. I have talked with Ken and Mark, and
they made suggestions and agree with this.

1) We will work together as a community.
2) Wikis will be used to display ideas.
3) Guidelines will be used to help streamline the process. They can be changed.
4) Deadlines must be set.
5) More community involvement must happen.

So lets get started!

Fonts - there are several option listed in the wiki. We need to make a
decision by the end of the month. Research licenses, usable,
readability, and international compliance.

Icons - This is a big challenge. Some guidelines have been posted but
more discussion needs to be generated then needs to be acted on.

Theme - This needs to be worked on together. A set of guidelines will
be produced, but for now, how about on the wiki:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Intrepid/Ubuntu_8.10_Theme_-_Art_Team

So lets get started! I encourage you to spread the word near and far
to all Gnome users - on all distros to help if they would. We will
create a user interface experience to set the gold standard, to put it
in Mark's words.

Well the point is we are not focusing on individual themes. That has
been tried before and no one could agree. There must be guidelines set
and more of a community driven approach to one theme that meets the

I think Grandma May is going to want pics of her grand-kids, weirdly
stretched out or tiled across her screen. :)

As for the rest of the users, there's a whole everlasting gobstopper of
imagery out there which they've been using for a long time: DeviantArt,
Flickr, Wikimedia, National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, endless numbers
of high-quality graphic design sites like pixelgirlpresents.com, image
search engines ...the entire internet is a gallery. I think it is always
going to be easier to grab some art that way, than a button linking to more
art or an add-on pack, and I think most people *want* to find things their
own way. They enjoy the process. A few good solid images, a default to
introduce/celebrate the release, and I think Ubuntu is good to go.

I understand the appeal of the idea, but I don't think it will be a good use
of resources spending time maintaining a reservoir of beautiful art...it'd
take a long time just to get people to agree on what beautiful is...which
would be going in the direction of letting users vote for art...which is
just the same as allowing everything...which gets you back to using the
internet as a resource to begin with. I don't think Ubuntu's payoff would be
worth the effort. People like what they like. They know where to get it or
how to look for it. Whether it is pics of the kids, their favorite
celebrity, or some swirly gradient grunge design.

 All the best dears!

There is no full version of Ubuntu. It is either 1 CD or DVD. CDs come
in different flavours like Desktop, Server edition.

All other packages can be installed over internet using 'Synaptic
Package Manager' in System - Administration menu. Or you can get DVD
from someone and add it as repository and then install packages. But
even on DVD you won't get all packages.

I suggest you get a broadband connection for yourself. :-)

@Raseel,

Please don't suggest unofficial download sources or images on the mailing list.

I was unaware that this list was strictly about official Ubuntu releases
only. I was under the impression that this
list was for all things related to Ubuntu in India. I gather mention of any
other Distro (like say, nUbuntu, Linux-Mint, etc.) other than Ubuntu,
Kubuntu, Edubuntu and Gobuntu is strictly prohibited ?

Also, I personally feel suggesting someone to get a broadband connection is
not the correct solution.

Anyways, for the OP, here's the official download link for the Ubuntu DVD if
you have got yourself a broadband connectiion :

If so, then I can happily report that Open Office Draw is suitable and

Hi Caroline
I think you can certainly use freehand line draw with a mouse as

see Curves, Freeform

It is worth looking at I would say.

Generally there are two drawing applications you might wish to use, they
both fulfil different goals. you have on one hand 'gimp'. this is whats
known as a bitmap editor, its preferred if your going to be doing
painting like operations and manipulating photos/other graphical images

On the other hand is the quite excellent Inkscape, its what is known as
a 'vector editor' which means that instead of painting colour like you
do in gimp, you instead draw lines and construct images based on that.

Essentially if you want to draw images, go for inkscape. if you want to
paint images, go for gimp. they are both excellent software however (so
play about and choose whats best for you)

[ubuntu-uk] Password recovery

2008-07-07 Thread Keith
Thanks for the suggestions.

I do have root access and I had already tried sudo passwd and I get
the response passwd: unknown user (user2). That is why I had also
tried System-Administration-Users and Groups to add (user2). The
response to that was Home directory already exists. I have tried to
change the name of that directory without success.

So it seems that I'm still stumped!

Cheers,

Keith.

Keith,

I don't have the thread in front of me but I seem to remember you
reinstalling or similar at some point? It sounds like user2 has been
removed from the system but its data hasn't. The easiest thing to do
might be to rename the home directory, readd the user and then copy
the data back across.

So, in a terminal type:
sudo mv /home/user2 /home/user2-tmp

Then go to System-Administration-Users and Groups to add user2.

Then do:
sudo cp -a /home/user2-tmp/ /home/user2
The -a should keep the permissions intact (assuming the new user2 has
the same user id as the previous user2). I think it will also copy all
of the hidden (.*) files, but can't remember off the top of my head so
it might be worth checking.

I havent said it is invalid, I'm discussing and asking about what I don't know.

How many free codecs are there? The number is sadly very small

How does Canonical legally give mp3 and mpeg decoders?

Maybe this should be a package we can propose to the Medibuntu project.

Thay already have a metapackage for the w32/w64/ppc codecs packages,
wich choose the good codec package depending on your cpu kind. It should
be possible to add a bigger list of package in this metapackage, I guess.

 Please don't top-post. :)

I wanna keep as many things in the repo as we can. So we'll look to the
 official repos 1st.

 -Cory \m/

Ok. But think that we already have alsa-firmware packages in Medibuntu.
And this is a well maintained and used repository: there is libdvdcss,
some restricted codecs, etc... It means users watching dvds on Ubuntu
are aware of the Medibuntu Project. Maybe we could just add the
medibuntu repository to the checkbox list in Synaptic, for Ubuntu Studio
?? then, considering it as an second kind of restricted repository,
any user who wants to install all codecs, can do it more easy.

Re: update for human theme

2008-07-07 Thread Martin Pitt
Hi Ken,

Kenneth Wimer [2008-07-07 14:11 +0200]:
 http://sinecera.de/human-theme_0.21.dsc

Uploaded, thanks!

I have some questions wrt. the themes:

When I upgraded my laptop to intrepid, I got NewHuman by default (I
might have customized something in the Appearance applet on my
laptop), while on my desktop I stayed with Human. Which behaviour is
intended? (Preferably staying on human?)

Aside from general darkness (de gustibus non disputandum est), a
rather objective issue with New Human is that dialog and text
backgrounds are too dark. This is a particular issue with terminals;
black text still has a bearable contrast, but coloured text
just looks awful. Any chance to brighten the default background, or
special-case the Terminal window to have a very light background
color? Personally I really like the human one. It is not 100% white,
thus not too bright for the eyes, but still pretty much whiteish for
not straining the eyes in bright working environments and providing
good text contrast.

Thanks,

Martin

Re: BSD licence

2008-07-07 Thread Matthias Urlichs
Hi,

luca (ᴉ) innurindi:
I think they negatively affect also the Ubuntu translations made in
Launchpad, because who spends some time and energy for providing a
quality translation if someone can later distribute this one in a
closed way and under his own license?

Ummm, in theory, yes, but ...

The BSD licence can encourage the behaviour of profiting from the
 others' work without costs.

... we're talking about translations of some specific, open-source-
licensed software here. Presumably the translations are of no use if you
don't already have the software. And the translations, once shipped with
said software, will inherit its license (being derived works).

LP suggests translations from other source packages than the one you're
working on, and which may be under a different (and possibly incompatible)
license. This might be a legal problem.

You can either stop suggesting treanslations, which causes
(a) inconsistencies and (b) duplicate work ...

... or you place the aggregate body of translations in Launchpad under
the most liberal license possible, and hope that nobody who translated
software A complains when his translation of string B ends up in
incompatibly-licensed package C, after translator D copied a suggestion
across.

Until somebody has a better idea, I'd suggest the latter solution.

I thought jack did support two soundcards, as long as they're not both

soundcard for input and output, I do this and use my laptop's onboard for
playback and an external usb for recording at the same time.

acpi=off? é isso?

Minha sugestão: instale a partir do alternate. É modo texto, mas é super

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] Modem SM56 motorola no Ubuntu 8.04

2008-07-07 Thread hamacker

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] Modem SM56 motorola no Ubuntu 8.04

2008-07-07 Thread hamacker
2.2 GB.
legendas, Virus Scanner, nautilus-scripts, ie6 (wine incluso), avidemux,
virtualbox, codecs, amsn, google earth e tantos outros. Muitos programas

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] Modem SM56 motorola no Ubuntu 8.04

legendas, Virus Scanner, nautilus-scripts, ie6 (wine incluso), avidemux,
virtualbox, codecs, amsn, google earth e tantos outros. Muitos programas

volta. Todo troubleshoot relacionado a rede é necessário a utilização do
compreensão do problema.

#iptables -A FORWARD -i eth1 -o eth0 -p tcp -s 192.168.0.0/24 --dport 80
-j ACCEPT
#iptables -A FORWARD -i eth0 -o eth1 -p tcp -d 192.168.0.0/24 --sport 80
-j ACCEPT

Atenciosamente,
Thiago

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] Servidor Jabber

2008-07-07 Thread Paulo Henrique Colen
*mysqladmin -u root password 123456

da o seguinte erro.
mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)'

tentei com outro usuário.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/opt/openfire/bin$ sudo mysqladmin -u paulocolen
password 123456
mysqladmin: Can't turn off logging; error: 'Access denied; you need the
SUPER privilege for this operation'
