[ubuntu-in] Fwd: canon lbp2400b installation problem

2013-10-24 Thread Nitesh Mistry

Hello all,

Please help with the following problem. It will be great to help educational
institutions migrate to open-source software.

If someone from Chennai LUG would be able to give support, that would be
awesome.

Appending just one line like [ Wiki:

Yes, it sounds logical.

I've no idea either but I'll ask on Monday and someone in the design

Aloha

Having spoken to some of the design folks this morning , there is
currently no plans for any deign work to be done except for an LTS. So
am hoping here the community could use this as a chance to show case
their design and creativity. Marcus in design has said he will create a
brief, who will do it, some examples of work done before that has been
completed and then design can be submitted and feedback given.

If folks want to take part and share this information to their teams
that would be great, the design folks hang out in #ubuntu-design and
hopefully this way we will have some excellent designs to use as CD
sleeves so people can distribute any CD they create.

thanks

 by Ubuntu 13.04 Release party.

Awesome! :D

We need your assistance and guidance on how the release party should be
 conducted.
And it would be really nice if ubuntu provides DVD's,stickers and goodies
which can be distributed during the release party.

A release party is... well, a party! We celebrate the release of the latest
version of Ubuntu.

Before party:
* Create an event on the loco.ubuntu.com portal (I can help here).
* Announce the event on local lug mailing lists, post on facebook/google+/
twitter. Provide the link to the event page on loco.ubuntu.com, so that they
can indicate their availability.

During the party:
* Introduce the latest version of Ubuntu, its new features, etc.
* Distribute the '.iso' files. Ubuntu (Canonical) stopped shipping CDs to
individuals and now only approved LoCo community get the CDs. So while we are
in the process of reapproval, we do not get any goodies to distribute, sorry.
* Help install Ubuntu to people who get their laptops/mobile devices.
* Last, but not the least... have fun! Cake/beer helps. :-D
* Take lots of pics.

After the party:
* Make a detailed report of the event (Who introduced, how many copies of iso
file distributed, how many people installed Ubuntu, other specifics).
* Upload pics and report on the community wiki page. Or send it to us
(contacts AT ubuntu-in DOT info). We will do the needful.

Rigved is conducting a party here in Mumbai [0]. I think he won't mind giving
you
some pointers.

Keep up the good work. :-)

[Bug 1167166] [NEW] flashplugin-installer fails to download adobe-flashplugin

2013-04-10 Thread Nitesh Mistry
Public bug reported:

Since last 3-4 updates of flashplugin-installer on both my installs of Ubuntu
12.04 and Kubuntu 12.10, I am facing the following problem:
1. 'sudo apt-get upgrade' shows that a new version of flashplugin-installer is
available (along with update to other packages)
2. When I go ahead with the update, it downloads the flashplugin-installer from
'http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ quantal-updates/multiverse'
3. Further it shows 'Preparing to replace flashplugin-installer ... (using ...)'
4. Then 'Unpacking replacement flashplugin-installer ...'
5. The next line is 'flashplugin-installer: downloading
http://archive.canonical.com/pool/partner/a/adobe-flashplugin/adobe-flashplugin_11.2.202.280.orig.tar.gz'
 - Here it remains stuck for sometime. I remember earlier it used to show the
process of downloading the adobe-flashplugin at this stage, but not since this
problem is occuring.
6. After remaining stuck at the above message for some time, it shows
'Installing from local file /tmp/tmpzjbHF5.gz' and proceeds with installation
of other packages and exits.

I don't know if the new version of the plugin is installed or does it
revert back to the last installed version of the plugin. I guess the
link in the installer package is correct because it shows up the new
package when I open the link in the browser.

Also, I have no problem playing flash files in the browser like viewing
videos on youtube.

'apt-cache policy flashplugin-installer' gives the following output:

flashplugin-installer:
Installed: 11.2.202.280ubuntu0.12.10.1
Candidate: 11.2.202.280ubuntu0.12.10.1

[Bug 964784] Re: Wrong links regarding 32/64 bit downloads of Qt SDK ZIP files from Nokia in kubuntu-docs-development

2013-04-10 Thread Nitesh Mistry
I am not quite sure of the current status of this bug, as the links in
the latest branch look correct both at
docs/development/C/development.xml and libs/global.ent

I even generated the html version of the docs and the links point to the
respective targets. However, the target itself seems to have moved.
Clicking on the links now takes the user to qt.digia.com.

I guess the correct target link is
http://www.developer.nokia.com/info/sw.nokia.com/id/da8df288-e615-443d-
be5c-00c8a72435f8/Qt_SDK.html

Here, the user needs to select the appropriate version of package after
which a login screen is presented.

Such programs don't happen just my shooting a mail and asking for a list of

Absolutely agree with you. But it shouldn't mean that no one is allowed

Only approved loco teams can order CDs from shipit. Since India loco team
is not approved, we cannot order them from shipit for free. But you can
always buy from their store. If you do not want to, you can ask the mailing

Ubuntu Community Week is Coming!

As many of you know, we've announced Ubuntu Community Week July 18
thru July 22nd 2011. The event outline is available on the wiki
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuCommunityWeek, and a draft schedule of
topics and presenters will soon be announced. This is where you come
in!

Are you a mover and shaker in an Ubuntu community? Do you help
organize events, presentations? Do you help spread Ubuntu where you
live? Do you have sage advice for others to help them along their
journey to building stronger communities or just to get more involved?

This is an open call for presenters that can help with any of the
scenarios described below. The idea behind the event is to help people
engage with their Ubuntu community, to catalyze Ubuntu community
growth, and to help make existing Ubuntu communities even better.

So, if you have sage advice for any or all of the people described
below, you can help!

Please send me rand...@executiv.es a brief outline of your
presentation (3 or 4 sentences is enough) and let's get started!

Thanks!
Randall

Use Case #1
Elizabeth is using a proprietary operating system from Redmond. She's
considering trying Ubuntu.

Where can I get an Ubuntu CD?
What happens if I get stuck?
What is the least intimidating way to meet my community?
I don't run Ubuntu, should I even be thinking about joining?

Use Case #2
Sid is a new Ubuntu user. Someone gave him an Ubuntu CD and he's
installed it.

What is a local community, and why should I care?
How can I find my local community? Where do I start?
Am I expected to contribute?

Use Case #3
Jeremy has been participating in community events as an attendee, but
not organizing/creating or presenting.

Why should I get involved?
What should I consider before taking the plunge?
My community isn't really to my liking. What should I do?
I want to evangelize Ubuntu and get others excited about it. How
can I do it?

Use Case #4
John is in a town with no findable Ubuntu community. He's thinking of
starting one.

How can I start an Ubuntu community?
What should be the mission?
Am I the right person for the job?

Use Case #4
Joe is running (or helping to run) a local community

How can I increase the findability of my local community?
What are some events I should consider organizing?
How can I find space for my events?
How will I fund my events?
Where will I locate my events?
What events would make my community want to attend more often?
What does my community need the most?
Should I get my community approved? What's in it for us? And,
what's involved?
I'm feeling overwhelmed. What should I do?

Use Case #5
Eric used to be part of an Ubuntu community but that was a couple
years ago. Now he's involved in other projects.

Should I reconsider joining my community?
What would be different this time around if I did?
Is Ubuntu even relevant any more?

Hi All!

As part of the work going in to make loco.ubuntu.com tab-worthy
(http://www.jonobacon.org/2011/05/26/future-loco-team-portal-plans/), we
need to know what the most awesome blog feeds are for LoCo content.

Do you have a blog about your LoCo team? Do you write about, post
pictures, and talk about the events your organize? If so, we want to
ensure your feed appears on the new loco.ubuntu.com
(http://loco.ubuntu.com).

To do this we are looking for recommendations for feeds. You don't have
to be an official Ubuntu member to have a feed on the site, you just
need to blog about the things your team is doing.

If you don't have a blog, I recommend you set up a free blog at
wordpress.com (http://www.wordpress.com).

Finally, go and let us know about your feed on the wiki page
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LoCoPortalFeeds).

Thanks!

Jono

[ubuntu-in] Ubuntu User Experience Survey

Hi all,

Forwarding the message for everyones' information.

From: Mackenzie Morgan maco...@gmail.com
To: loco-conta...@lists.ubuntu.com
Subject: Please share with your LoCos

When your interaction with other Ubuntu users is entirely made up of
developers talking about bugs they need to fix and users seeking
support (IRC, forums, bug reports), your perspective changes. It's
hard to get a good idea of the big picture. What portion of users are
hitting problems in what areas? How do users who've reported bugs
feel about the experience? How are the local community teams doing?
That kind of stuff is hard to wrap your head around without metrics.

To that end, a bunch of members of the Ubuntu community have worked
together to create a survey that'll help those of us working on
various parts of Ubuntu understand where we need to improve and how we
can do better.

If you have an opinion on Ubuntu, please take 5 minutes to fill out
the following Ubuntu User-Experience survey:

Thank you!

Really? IIRC, blocks for sda3 are starting after sda2 and sda5. From the

[ubuntu-in] Fwd: Ubuntu Open Week

2011-04-23 Thread Nitesh Mistry
For everyone's notice. Anyone from the community wanting to take up a session?

loco-conta...@lists.ubuntu.com, Ubuntu-Women

ubuntu-de...@lists.ubuntu.com, Submit and discuss any Ubuntu related
news stories ubuntu-news-t...@lists.ubuntu.com

Hi all,

I know everyone is insanely busy at this time in the cycle; however,
your assistance is needed as Open Week is less than 2 weeks away and
the schedule is still *very* open.

Please take a look at the schedule
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuOpenWeek) and lets see what we can do
to bump this thing up a notch.  Remember the target audience for
Ubuntu Open Week is the *End User*, so think about what sessions can
be offered to help users (all of us) to become even better, more
efficient and effective. Each of us has knowledge we can share through
what we do for the Ubuntu project, whether it is explaining what the
council you are on does and what it means to the community, how does
your Loco Team work, a QA session with your team so that end users
understand what you do and how they can be part of that picture.  What
about a session on screencasting howto's, Filing bugs, testing and
more.  There are so many things to share and we share them everyday in
some capacity.

How about introductions to the derivative distro's such as  Kubuntu,
Edubuntu, Xubuntu, Ubuntu Studio, and more.  If you are on the Server,
Desktop, Kernel, Foundations, QA,  DX, Design or other Team consider
giving a Question and Answer Session.  As mentioned above if you are
on the Community Council, Forums Council, IRC Council, LoCo Council do
you have an hour where you can talk about issues and overviews related
to those areas and let the community know how to engage these areas
better.

What about projects such Beginners Team, Docs Team, Spread Ubuntu,
Ubuntu Marketing etc, let's reintroduce some of these to the community
again and share those things during open week.

Please take a moment to see if you can carve out 1 (one) hour of your
time to give to help end users learn more about the ins and outs
Ubuntu and the community that makes it what it is.  Share your
knowledge.  Don't worry if you haven't given a session before we can
help you get started.

If 14 people or teams of people can step up and give a session for
open week this would be *awesome*!  Take a look at the schedule
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuOpenWeek)  and either let me know where
to add your session or fill it in on the time table
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuOpenWeek/Timetable).  If you have any
questions, please email myself or Jorge Castro or ping either of us on
IRC (akgraner or jcastro).

I know I still have a lot to learn and I personally look forward to
open week more than any other Ubuntu week because I always learn
something new that helps me become a better end user and Ubuntu
community member.

Thank you in advance for those who will give sessions and those who
will attend as every session leader and participant makes open week
successful.

with much gratitude and appreciation,

~ Amber :-D

This means that someone has to really dig in heels and create content; if it
is targeted towards newbies, it would be incomplete without screenshots
etc. And it makes NO sense to duplicate the efforts.

I don't think we are/will be duplicating efforts. If there is
information somewhere
else why write it again. But there are so many threads on the
mailing list asking about modem xyz (usually sold in India) not
working, etc. It is
difficult to find information about these on 'global' sites since they
may not be very
popular elsewhere. The site is intended to target that kind of audience.

Remember: This is not meant to be an Ubuntu knowledge site like OMG!Ubuntu.
This will provide LoCo centric articles and some stuff to make the Ubuntu
 user feel more comfortable.

True, but I remember the time when I used to stare a spartan 'Indian Loco'
web site without being of any use. The best help was in the IRC but then,it
depends on the active participation. I wonder how many are really aware.

That is the intended change. The website should be the primary source
of information
and if it still does not work out, the user comes to mailing list and irc.

up a wiki page of those who have the CDs and those wanting one is more cost
effective and also improves 'the social network' within the community.

Also, by setting up a shipit like service, people would expect better or
professional artwork on CDs and CD covers which would up the cost further.

[Bug 743281] [NEW] bash: event not found error while updating status with group (!) tag on identi.ca

2011-03-26 Thread Nitesh Mistry
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: twidge

When I update status on identi.ca using group tag (!) it gives bash
error and no update is sent

eg.
$ twidge update this a a status update for !ubuntu
bash: !ubuntu: event not found

I tried the escape character (\) the update is sent successfully but the
output is not as desired

eg.
$ twidge update denting about \!ubuntu
the escape character is actually posted in the status update as it is (denting
about \!ubuntu) because of which identi.ca does not pick up the group tag
correctly and the dent is not included in that group list.

[ubuntu-in] [david.plane...@ubuntu.com: Call for Maverick language pack update testing]

2011-03-18 Thread Nitesh Mistry
FYI

- Forwarded message from David Planella david.plane...@ubuntu.com -

Date: Fri, 18 Mar 2011 11:38:56 +0100
From: David Planella david.plane...@ubuntu.com
To: Ubuntu Translators ubuntu-translat...@lists.ubuntu.com
Cc: Ubuntu local community team (LoCo) contacts
loco-conta...@lists.ubuntu.com
Subject: Call for Maverick language pack update testing

Hi translators,

(Re-issuing the call for testing after having re-uploaded the language
packs after fixing a critical bug)

We've uploaded language packs in the maverick-proposed repository for
you to test before they are released to all users. These should contain
all your updates and fixes in translations done since the release date.

I'd like to ask teams to test them and provide an indication
that they've done so by following some simple steps and submitting a
signoff, so that we know that translations have been successfully
tested.

Simply follow the instructions in this page and add your team's signoff
in the table at the bottom:

  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Translations/LanguagePackUpdatesQA

The deadline for the testing is the 25th of March (in a week's
time). After that, we'll update the language packs we've received
feedback for into maverick-updates, so that all users can benefit from
the new translations and fixes.

Remember that you'll have to to enable the maverick-proposed repository
to get these updates:

  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed

Notes
-

Remember that now you can subscribe to the iCal feed to stay up to date
with language pack updates and better coordinate your work:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MaverickReleaseSchedule

Notice that as commented on the mailing list recently, we've experienced
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/731298. This bug has now been fixed, but
for those of you using the language packs PPA, please remember to follow
Martin's Pitt advice to purge and reinstall the packages for a proper
fix:

Note that I can't automatically fix packages for people who already
upgraded to the broken PPA version; they will need to purge the packages
(-base as well) and reinstall them.

Thank you for your help in testing translations for all users in your
language!

Regards,
David.

 popular/helpful/useful etc.

Absolutely! I don't know if anything in my original post gave the idea of
splitting up, but my only intention with this was to bring more people to
our ongoing efforts in the Indian LoCo [0]. Actually I myself was a bit
annoyed by the fact that there were quite a few other India related groups
in launchpad which rarely communicate/co-ordinate with us. When the hands
are few, it is always a good idea to work together. My intention was not to
create 'yet another group' but to give incentive to the people to come to
this existing group. As I mentioned before, there are 1179 direct members
in our launchpad team and hundreds subscribed to the mailing list, but only
a handful of them are actively involved in team activities.

But as others have rightly pointed out, the resources required for this
kind of effort would outweigh its benefits. As an afterthought, I think it
would also cause a sort-of-alienation among those who are not approved as
members.

This is what I answered to. This question gave an idea that you wanted to
get firefox4 and thunderbird. There was little in there that gave an idea
that you were looking to integrate both. Sorry about the misunderstanding.
:)

Just curious, what kind of integration are you looking for? Like a browser
tab in thunderbird itself when clicking on an external link in email? Just
asking because I have rarely used any MUA except for mutt.

[ubuntu-in] Membership to ubuntu-in?

2011-03-07 Thread Nitesh Mistry
While crawling the ubuntu wiki today, I stumbled upon these two[0][1] wiki
pages on ubuntu-in members and ubuntu-in promoters[2]. The crux was to
acknowledge the contribution towards local community by giving them
@ubuntu-in.org email aliases (akin to ubuntu membership). Somehow, I think
the project didn't take off as no activity is seen after late 2008.

Should the project be revived? I am inclined to say yes, as that something
extra always encourages to be more involved with the community.

If the administrator/member of that group is reading this mail, please
share your ideas/experiences if you would like to.

Sounds very encouraging as the horror stories I have been hearing about

[ubuntu-in] Ubuntu Global Jam on 1-3 April

2011-03-01 Thread Nitesh Mistry
Hello all,

As many of you might have already heard/read about [0], Ubuntu Global Jam
(UGJ) [1] will be held from 1st to 3rd of April this year for Natty
release cycle.

UGJ is a global event (as the name suggests) where all the local
communities (LoCos) around the world participate to make Ubuntu better.
There are many ways to get involved as mentioned on the wiki page [1].

Though it is preferable to have this event organised in person, it is also
possible to conduct this event on irc. Considering that organising such
event in person on a pan-India level might be too cumbersome, I suggest we
have a irc event this time. If there are enough people (read 3 or more)
willing to gather in a particular city, they can also conduct an in-person
event in parallel.

For the irc event I suggest we gather at #ubuntu-in channel where more
experienced among us can make themselves available in guiding others to
triage bugs, documentation, translations, testing, etc.

The intention of this mail is to invite suggestions in planning UGJ India
event.

In short, lets rock together and make this Indian community shine globally.
:)

You will get a normal update which will change your version number to
 10.04.2

'normal update' is what 'apt-get dist-upgrade' does, but on command line
instead of gui.

 Even I know that, but when I do dist-upgrade I got 10.04.1 from 10.04

Compare it with Safe upgrade and Full Upgrade in Synaptic (or used to
be; don't remember since I haven't used it recently).

Safe Upgrade = apt-get upgrade : if upgrading any package causes removal of
another package, such package is held back.

Full Upgrade = apt-get dist-upgrade : all packages are upgraded, even if
upgrading any package caused another package to be removed.

In both cases, the system is on the same release (10.04). It does not
upgrade to 10.10.

I daily do 'apt-get dist-upgrade' on my lucid machine, and I can confirm it
is still lucid and not maverick. :)

Just writing out of my own experience. Trying to dig out some material on
it (referred to it ages ago).

[ubuntu-in] Mailing list etiquettes

2011-02-19 Thread Nitesh Mistry
Not trying to point this to someone or forcing any rules here, but
considering quite a few new participants on this list, I just wanted to
share this definitive guide on mailing list etiquettes here:

http://pthree.org/?p=1426

The link is to the first of the 4 part series.

Re: [ubuntu-in] Sound problems in maverick meerkat

Well, everything was working fine once I had installed it, but then after

Are you sure that the command worked? Ideally it should have failed as
copying anything to a directory outside *your* home directory (eg.
'/home/njain') requires 'sudo'. So either your command should have been:

$ cp -R /media/Elements/home/njain /home/your-user-id

or

$ sudo cp -R /media/Elements/home/njain /home

or you have set world write permission to your root or /home directory
which is highly undesirable.

In any case, I don't think that command should have caused the sound
problem.

Do you remember any error or warning messages being displayed on terminal
when you gave that command?

The error I saw in rhythmbox is configured audiosink bin1 not found, IIRC.

Try running rhythmbox from the terminal, like:
$ rhythmbox

and post the output. It might help finding the real cause of this problem.
Also try googling the error line that you find in the output.
