You should be able to configure your IMAP client to download messages
for "offline" mode. There is also an archive function.

If you're worried about that then any email server is a risk, other than
your own. Until recently, all email was sent as plain text over the
public Internet. It was very easy to intercept. Also, if you're
leaving email on a POP server for a period of time, it's going to be
there when someone comes looking for it. If you really want security,
the answer is, as it has been for centuries, use encryption. Many
people already do that with PGP or X.509 certificates. Always assume
the "enemy" can eavesdrop on your communications, so protect the content
with encryption.

It is an email client, nothing more. If you want replication, you're
going to need some means for all clients to sync. An IMAP server does
precisely that.

Key exchange is simply a method of exchanging encryption keys. I
mentioned this earlier in the context of directory servers. However
those are not the same as syncing email over multiple devices and,
again, key exchange requires a server.

Yahoo has supported IMAP for a few years now. Of course they're not the

I guess you don't know much about the history of email. Originally,
people read their email on the computer it was delivered to. Then POP
allowed them to download to another computer, such as those new fangled
"PCs". POP was never intended to be used by more than one device.
Simply leaving a message on the server for a period of time, so that it
could be read on another device, was nothing more than a hack to get
around the limitations of POP. What you're asking for is a complete
redesign of POP and you still won't have what IMAP is designed to do.
Also, how is IMAP a security problem, given that the entire Internet is
not secure and mail servers are finally moving to StartTSL to encrypt
between servers. I run my own IMAP server and access it only via SSL/TLS

To have synced POP, you'd need all devices to sync with each other.
Given that many are only on part time, that would be a real task. You'd
need a server somewhere to manage it. Perhaps an IMAP server?

Then you're using the wrong protocol. If you are using POP, you will
not have syncing between systems. If you use IMAP, you will. With
IMAP, the messages, including sent email, are retained on the server,
where any device or app can access them. I have two computers, with my
choice of Linux, Windows 7 or Windows 10, a tablet and smart phone. All
of them have access to all my email.

Bottom line, it's all nonsense that ignores reality.

As history and recent events have proven, those who believe in religion
are all too often the cause of violence. When you believe in a
delusion, you can use it to justify anything, up to and including the
recent murders committed in "God's" name. Religion is a cancer this
world can well do without.

If "believers" kept their delusions to themselves, this world would be a
much better place.

AndrOffice works off line. However, your friend should test it before

There are currency converters, on Google Play, that might be more
appropriate, though I haven't used any of them.

That was possible in OS/2, but I haven't seen it anywhere else. With
OS/2, you could create a Work Area folder and whenever that folder was
opened, whatever was in it would also open.

Forgot to mention, closing the folder also closed the open documents.
So, you could create a work area folder for a project, place all the
files for that project in the folder and then open or close them all at
once. You could also create shadows for those documents in the work
area folder, but leave the originals elsewhere. A shadow is another
instance of the exact same file, so changes in a shadow automagically
 appear in the original.

With any popular Linux desktop and (Windows too) Ctrl+A selects all file
 icons in a folder window.
And the Enter key does the same as the double-click. It triggers the
standard action which should be open for all document files.
I would not be surprised if something similar works with OSX as well.

With those OS/2 work area folders, you don't have to select anything,
beyond opening the folder. When it opens, all the documents that had
been open previously would open again, taking you back to exactly where
you were when you closed it previously. It even survives reboots, which
virtual desktops don't.

As I mentioned, this is very handy for projects. The only thing that's
similarly useful for projects is a virtual deskop. They have been
commonplace in Linux Unix for many years, but only recently been
available in Windows.

Open that folder, hit Ctrl+A and Enter to open all the files with the

That was possible in OS/2, but I haven't seen it anywhere else. With
OS/2, you could create a Work Area folder and whenever that folder was
opened, whatever was in it would also open.

Forgot to mention, closing the folder also closed the open documents.
So, you could create a work area folder for a project, place all the
files for that project in the folder and then open or close them all at
once. You could also create shadows for those documents in the work
area folder, but leave the originals elsewhere. A shadow is another
instance of the exact same file, so changes in a shadow automagically
appear in the original.

unless you save it elsewhere, your changes won't be saved. You can't
just open a zip, change something and then expect the changes to be

Given the amount of international interchange, even ignoring the fact
that local custom is often not followed, the only way to be sure is to
use the ISO spec and nothing else. Isn't it also part of that ISO

Another thing that adds to the fun is the 12 hour clock, so that 12:59

PM. The precise moment of 12:00 is neither AM nor PM. It is the
boundary between the two. So, the correct terms are 12 noon or 12
midnight, if you insist on sticking with the 12 hour clock. The better
method is to use the 24 hour clock. This also brings the benefit of,
when used with the ISO date format, the digits are listed in order of
descending value, going from left to right. This makes sorting on date
time much easier and allows for no ambiguity.

For example, I am posting this at 2005 04 13 12:37. There is absolutely

access to files on other networked machines.

When using LO on Windows XP, the file-open dialogue shows a 'Network

problem. I am trying to ensure that they get an equivalent experience
 when using LO on Linux.

However, the file-open dialogues of LO on the different Linux
distributions I've tried do not show network shares on either Windows
machines or Linux machines running Samba, and so users do not have the
same experience that they have been used to on Windows XP. If I use
the Kate text editor, which does provide a network icon in the
file-open dialogue, there's no problem accessing files on the same
 shares.

I know that if we access the files on the network shares using
dolphin/nautilus, then subsequently that network location appears in
the LO file-open dialogue. However, I'd rather not require our users
to do that before they can use the wordprocessing facilities; I simply
want the same file-open dialogue on Linux LO that they had on Windows
 XP LO and MS Office.

 Is this possible?

One thing I've noticed is the Servers drop down list (top right corner
of file open panel), where you can select Windows shares. I haven't
tried it, but that may do what you want.

What version shall I use for each?

Download the Windows version for all Windows users. The Linux users
likely have versions tailored for their distro available.

The reason I ask, I downloaded Open Office, did a spreadsheet, and on

 still shows as Open Office.

So, thinking it was because it was a copy/paste, I produced a sample
spreadsheet called dates using Libre, and open office is still shown in the

Could it be because I have not uninstalled Open Office yet?

LibreOffice is a fork from OpenOffice, created when Oracle hadn't
decided what to to with OpenOffice StarOffice. So, there is a lot of
similarity between them. However, what are you referring to by
heading? If it's something you put in the document, it will always
show, no matter what app you use.

You can have both OpenOffice and LibreOffice on the same computer, but
only one can be the default app for the various file formats.

I don't have a Samsung tablet, but I do have a couple of Android

just connecting to my computer via a USB cable opens up the tablet so I
can copy or move files. I also use an app called ES File Explorer,

There are adapters that allow you to use a micro SD card in a standard

Maybe I got confused. I thought my 10 inch was from a DEC system.
It was sure big. Maybe they used a different type. I donated it to a

a punched card program, and some paper tape.

No, DEC floppies were 8 too. Back when I was a computer tech, I used
to maintain some VAX 11/780 systems. On them, the CPU needed to have
the microcode loaded, before it could do anything. This was done by an
LSI-11 (microprocessor version of the PDP-11), which loaded the
microcode from a floppy and loaded it into the CPU.
I hated CP/M and had to deal with an early college computer center
that had IBM [brand and not clones] PC-XTs and a few of them actually
had a graphics card and not the original 80x40 characters type of
display. They all were double single-sided floppy 5.25 inch. The
other rooms had old Apple [before Macs] and they had CP/M OS options,
and the next room had DEC terminals to the mini-mainframes. While I
was there a math professor brought in the new Apple computer called
a Macintosh. We also a 10 inch screen portable PC-AT or XT that
 weighted over 40 pounds.

The next college center had both DEC terminals and a few dual floppy
PCs that were connected to the DEC system via a terminal emulator
called Kermit, if my memory is correct. I used its upload/download
abilities to save all my work for that college onto the floppies and
also did some editing at home. My first PC I had at home was a
clone from a kit that cost about half of the IBM prices.

Those were the days of the early home PC market and the beginning of a
PC in every home idea. Before them, most home computer devices were
 toys.

I only used CP/M on a Supercalc course I took. My first computer, an
IMSAI 8080 could run CP/M, *IF* you had floppy drives, which I didn't.
I used audio cassettes. When I was taking a Fortran course, I used
Procomm+ as a terminal emulator to connect to the school computer. I
also had an XT clone.
