Also, please consider that in your mockup, you appear to have eliminated the
thumbnail view of recently used documents. That is a critical design element

You'll need to rework your mockup to show where thumbnail views and

[libreoffice-users] Calc: How to concat CTRL+ENTER to a string?

2015-04-09 Thread William Drago

All,

To place two lines of text in a cell I type the first line
then press CTRL+ENTER and type the second line. I am trying
to do this in an equation and don't know how.

Here's what I have:

=CONCATENATE(Target Balance Assuming , E2*100, % Growth)

I want everything after Target Balance to appear in the
second line of the cell so that the cell looks like this:

Target Balance
Assuming xx% Growth

How do I modify the above equation to achieve this?

Thanks,
-Bill

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Not happy with LO Calc worksheet tabs in 4.4.1.2

2015-03-23 Thread William Drago
Thank you for posting that. The discussion is very
interesting and clearly explains why the scrollbar was
moved. No rational was given for changing the shape of the
tabs however.

Comment 29 by Tomaz Vajngerl: I have also made some visual
changes to the tabs (rectangular, more plain look)...

That change has no purpose, why was it made? To put another
nail in the coffin of skeuomorphic design? (Rhetorical,
don't waste your time trying to answer.) Visual cues are
important and I think the rectangular tabs suggest columns
rather than overlapping worksheets. Sorry, that's just my
opinion.

A new building on our campus opened last year and featured
many modern technologies, including very nice-looking glass
doors through which you enter and exit the building. The
problem is that the doors have identical handles on either
side. The handles themselves are very attractive, but they
don’t tell me what to do when I want to enter the
building—should I push or pull the door? The handles on
these particular doors suggest to me that they are made for
grasping and pulling. However, the door goes in only one
direction, and the very same handles appear on both sides of
the door. Therefore, to enter the building, I have to use
the handle to pull the door, and to exit, I have to use the
identical type of handle to push the door. How would someone
possibly know which way the door swings when approaching it?

On the positive side, I love the new icons on the tool bars
especially the one for inserting a chart. Also, I've been

Sorry, but fully shown in the 4.4 release notes

since January.

/Tab changes

Sheet tabs (Calc) and layer tabs (Draw) were moved to an independent row and
are no longer displayed next to the horizontal scrollbar. As many visual
styles under Linux (in addition to the default OS X configuration) use very
thin scrollbars, these rendered the tabs too small to be clickable and, most
importantly, readable.

The tabs have an updated, flatter look./

You can read the rational and dev actions on tdf#36772
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=36772 --UI: Sheet
tabs appear too small because LibreOffice has problems with certain themes
or does not force a minimim hight for tabs

And some counter discussion on tdf#87684
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=87684 -- UI: Calc
sheet tabs and horizontal scroll bar are now wasting twice the space

Point is, this is nothing new or exceptional, the change was implemented Aug

Yes Bill, I know exactly what you are talking about. I have seen and
used numerous Windows and Linux machines where opening the LO does not
grab the focus in the same way as most other programs do. A LO defect I
have simply learned to live with.

There are at least 2 open Bugzilla related reports:
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=48300
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=75471
Some argue that they are different issues, I disagree, because it is
only the splash logo that pulls the focus to the LO window, with the
-nologo parameter set or for second instances where LO doesn't already
hold the focus, the code makes no attempt to set the window focus.
Coding to set the the window focus under Windows Linux (don't know
OSX) is Programming 101 stuff and should be listed as an Easy Hack.
It has been suggested that this _might_ be fixed in version 4.5, but not
in any the dev builds I have tested so far.

Is there a solution? None that I am aware of, but adding a comment to
one or both the above report may help to attract a developer's interest.

Dave

   My earlier example was a
simplified version of the data I'm working with. When Brian Wdragos
technique is applied to the 2026 samples I really have, it sort of works so
I can see what your talking about. I keep altering the incrementation that
takes place in this technique to try to get the last cell to say the stop
time. It comes pretty close but is always off by a few minutes. The reason
for this is theres a limit to the precision you can do with Times in
OpenOffice Calc. Using the hr/mn/sec format you can't generate small enough
increments to get the generated times to match the stop time. If there was a
hr/mn/sec/fraction of a second format you could do it. In Calc theres a
time format that looks like this, but in practice it doesn't 'roll over'
like say minutes or seconds.

It looks like Calc's stock functions won't do the job. I'm thinking of
getting around this by finding some source for a stopwatch program, and
maybe modifiying it to do something similar, but with a greater precision of
incrementation.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Generate a column of times

2014-09-09 Thread William Drago

This is what Brian is trying to explain...

You've got 6 samples. The first one taken at 12:04PM, the
last one at 12:36PM.

The total elapsed time is 12:36PM - 12:04PM = 22 minutes.

22 divided by 5 (always the total number of readings minus
1) = 6.4 minutes or 6m and 24s per interval.

Adding 6:24 to 12:04PM gives you the time of the second
reading, 12:10:24PM. Enter that value into cell B2.

Now we make the computer do the work for all remaining
readings. Follow these instructions carefully:

Highlight cells B1 and B2. Hover the mouse over the little
black square in the lower right hand corner of the the
highlighted cells until it turns into a cross (+). Now hold
the left mouse button down and drag the mouse downward. As
you drag the mouse each cell will fill with the correct time
stamp.

You will end up with this:

12.7 12:04:00 PM
8.912:10:24 PM
3.512:16:48 PM
2.112:23:12 PM
7.212:29:36 PM
6.112:36:00 PM

If you want to use 1S as your interval the just enter
12:04:01PM in B2 and drag the mouse as explained above.

Hope that helps...

-Bill

If the sample values are in column A1, then I'd like an approximate
time-line in the cells between the start logging and stop logging times in
column B2.

What I'm after is to look at my notes taken at different times (the time
noted) during logging, and identify the approximate sample that corresponds
to them.

I'm afraid I don't understand your example as it looks like you have the

Re: [libreoffice-users] Can't get leading zeros in Calc

To preserve leading 0's in a spreadsheet type the number
with an apostrophe before it. For example, instead of typing
1234, type '001234. That will preserve the leading 0's.

If I don't care about formatting in the spreadsheet, I'll
add the leading 0's in the code that does the passing.
Typically I read the cell, convert to string, pad with the
appropriate number of 0's, then write to the database.

Now I have 3 questions:

1) Why doesn't LO tell us what the problems are like
Gnumerics does instead of stalling for 20 minutes or more?

2) Why is the timeout period so long? 20 minutes? Really?
3) When we copy paste a webpage why is LO storing links to

Anyway, at least now I know how to fix this.

How large/heavy is the spreadsheet? If it's over 10Mb then that might
explain it. Does it have lots of embedded images in it? Could those
be just linked to rather than embedded?

Have you tried using Gnumeric for that spreadsheet? Gnumeric is a
dedicated spreadsheeting program so it's far more sophisticated than
Calc/Excel for some things. Quite a few people have it alongside
LibreOffice or other office suite for use when they need something
really serious.

Tom :)

At one time I had copied pasted some information from my retirement
account into the spreadsheet. Unless I'm logged into my Fidelity account,
none of these URLs will work.

Now I have 3 questions:

1) Why doesn't LO tell us what the problems are like Gnumerics does
instead of stalling for 20 minutes or more?

Not sure, maybe he is just trying to open them. But these images load
fine without being logged anywhere (I can see them), so I'm not sure that
the problem is there. It might be related to another resource on internet
anyway.

2) Why is the timeout period so long? 20 minutes? Really?
My previous statement kinda invalid the idea of a timeout (unless the
website was down all the time you tried to open the file...). But if the
issue lies in Calc behing unable to open a file with https links, the
timeout per file isn't insanely high: 2-3 minutes is a fairly reasonable
value to accomodate with dead-slow connections.
But since the images load correctly... moot point :(

3) When we copy paste a webpage why is LO storing links to images
instead of the actual images?

I believe it's by design: it is not always desirable to create multiple
copies of the image source; especially if it's not a static image, that is
used to convey updated informations for example; or if you are working on
a document where graphic designers can update their work, put placeholder
in places, etc. In this regard, it keeps the URL as the image source as it
would keep the abolute file path from a file source.

Note that you can see and kill these links by going in the Edit menu:
Edit-Links. There you can select all links and hit Break Links.
If the issue lies in Calc loading a file with linked images on the web,
this can avoid the issue (given you do it before saving, of course).
However, since these links are publicly accessible, a failure to load them
by Calc is likely a bug if it is confirmed.

LO unfortunately contains a bug (which goes way back and remains

handouts, ...) between print jobs. And with the latest version it even
got worse. Now, if you want to print handouts, you not only have to
select handouts every time, but now you also have to pick the number
of slides per page again, unless you want the default, which seems to
be 6 (for whatever reason).

Does anyone know a workaround for this nuisance?

Thanks and all the best,

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Including code example in documents

2013-08-12 Thread William Drago
I do this all the time using the syntax highlighter in
Notepad++.

If you don't have Notepad++ (my favorite code/text editor),
get it here: http://notepad-plus-plus.org/

Here's how to get syntax highlighted code into your
LibreOffice documents:

1: Open source file with Notepad++
2: In Notepad++ click Plugins NppExport Export to RTF

You will now have a syntax highlighted copy of your source
file however, it will be double spaced. To remove the extra
spaces proceed as follows:

1: With any editor, open the .rtf file you just created
2: Search and replace \par with \line
3: Save file

Open the .rtf file with LibreOffice Writer, select all
(CTRL-A), copy paste into your working document.

This sounds like a bit of an ordeal, but I do this quite
frequently, and once you've done it a few times, it becomes
very fast and easy.

Good luck,

Something, that should be repeated on each page, goes into

the paragraph in the header. You can use a frame anchored
to the header paragraph as well. A frame has the

Well, there is no Horizontal Line Style listed even after

Re: [libreoffice-users] Need header outside right margin

2013-06-26 Thread William Drago

Hi Virgil,

Thank you for the detailed reply. I've been meaning to learn
how to use styles, so I'll give this a try.

Regards,

-Bill

On 6/26/2013 7:55 AM, Virgil Arrington wrote:

William,

Your document would use page styles. The page style for
the first page would not have any headers. Then the page
style for the subsequent pages would have a header. You
can then format the lines (paragraphs) within the header
to any left and right margin you would like. (To have
margins extend beyond the normal page margin, use negative
numbers in your paragraph indent settings.)

To get to the page styles, make sure you're styles list is
showing (press
F11 if it isn't). Then, at the top of the list are icons
for (from left to right) paragraph styles, character
styles, frame styles, and then page styles (it looks like
a sheet of paper). Click on that icon to see a list of the
page styles available for your document. You can then
right click on any one of them to modify them or create
new ones. At this point, it would be
best for you to experiment with the page styles yourself,
creating new ones or modifying existing ones to get the
result that you want. Take careful note of the option on
the organizer tab for next style as it will show what
page style will be used for the following page. Sometimes
this can cause some frustration. Also, there is an option
in the header tab to set
left and right margins. It may not allow negative margin
settings here (I
just tried it and it ignored me), so you may need to set
negative margins at the paragraph indent level rather than
the header margin level.

It's all about learning to use styles, paragraph styles
for paragraph level formatting and page styles for page
level formatting. It's a pain to learn, and while you're
learning you want to cuss out the LO developers, but once
you learn it, you'll bless them as you'll be able to make
your documents sing. The only way I know to learn is to
experiment and play with them, creating your own styles
along the way. I know its frustrating when all you want to
do is finish the current project, but the more you learn
now, the
more you'll be able to apply to future projects to make
your work so much
quicker, automated, and consistent. It really is worth the
effort.

What I find most interesting is the dark ages style of
formatting papers that you've been handed, with paragraph
indents measured in spaces and lines in terms of
single double and triple spacing. Is this an
Underwood we're using or a computer?

As long as we remain entrenched in a typewriter mentality
(even though many of us have never typed a single letter
on a typewriter), we will never learn the advanced
capabilities of our computers, which act more like
printing presses than typewriters.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Need header outside right margin

2013-06-26 Thread William Drago
Well, I provided a bad example. What I'm being asked to do
is pretty close to the latest format from MLA. The only
difference is that outside the margin thing. I don't know
where that's from, but that's what I have to do.

If I can't get styles to work, I'll try your technique.

Aargh! To follow that, you might want to time-travel to
the previous millennium and purchase a typewriter!

How can this be done in LO Writer?

Fairly easily, I think. First, the page margins are the
printing limits, so you need to set these wide enough to
contain the extra material at the top of each page. Now
insert a header, using Insert | Header, and enter the
required material.

Now your only problem is that you need the main text not
to spread as far as your newly extended right margin.
There are probably a number of ways to do that; the
easiest may be to modify your paragraph style.
Right-click in the text and go to Edit Paragraph Style...
| Indents Spacing | Indent and set the After text
value to however much you extended the right margin to
accommodate your header. This will move the paragraph
margin for all your text back to where you want it. (This
won't work if you have applied contradictory local
paragraph formatting, of course. If necessary, use Format
| Default Formatting (or Ctrl+M) to remove this.)

I trust this helps.

When I highlight the drawing the text object menu disappears
and is replaced by the drawing object menu. When I click
View Tool Bars Text object, the text object tool bar
does come back, but all of its buttons are ghosted.

When I right-click the drawing the Alignment menu has one
item in it that says No selection possible and the
Arrange menu only has Bring to front, Bring forward, Send
backwards, Send to back, and To background.

I am using LO 4.0.3.3 and the drawings are pasted in from LO

BTW, pasting drawings into Writer is the correct way to get
them from Draw to Writer isn't it?

Use the PositionSize dialog from its context menu. It
allows a large varieties of settings. For example you can
center to page or center to text area.

Thanks for the suggestion, Peter, but that doesn't work

Re: [libreoffice-users] java macro

2013-05-09 Thread William Drago

Tom Vieri,

Let's not get the Java browser plugin and the Java
programming language confused...

Java is an excellent programming language and in no way can
be considered any less solid than C++. In fact, in many ways
it is more secure and more reliable than code written in C++.

What people are uninstalling/disabling (even me) is the Java
browser plugin, not the JRE/JDK. The plugin has indeed had
many security issues, and with Flash and HTML5 very few
people are using Java applets in their websites anymore.

So... Java plugin = bad. Java programming language = excellent.

Now that that's settled, C++ is a language that every
programmer should at least be familiar with. Whatever
language you choose as a primary programming language is
determined by a variety of factors, but as a general rule
you'll be more productive in Java than C++.

Python is also an excellent programming language, but I have
too little experience with it to comment any further than that.

Oracle seem to be having a lot of trouble writing code that doesn't get
compromised really fast. So, many people are getting rid of Java and moving
away from it as fast as possible. Even the US Homeland Security apparently
sent a notice to tell people to avoid Java and uninstall it asap. Of course a
lot of large companies are a bit stuck and there are still a lot of adverts for
programmers that know java.

In my country jobs for Java programmers start at 20k but for C++ programmers
start at 30k

Hi,

I'm new to making Java macros.
I compiled my Java class, created the parcel-descriptor.xml file and placed the
.xml, .jar and .class files within the following folders I also created:

C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\LibreOffice\4\user\Scripts\java\MACRO1

C:\Program Files\LibreOffice 4.0\share\Scripts\java\MACRO1

When I re-launch LO and go to Macros- Run Macros, I don't see my MACRO1 java macro under My
Macros or LibreOffice Macros.

Why is that? Shouldn't I at least see the listing?

Java JRE 7 seems to work because if I select the LibreOffice java HelloWorld
example, it prints a message in my document.

[libreoffice-users] How to turn off the global menu

All,

want to turn off the very annoying global menu and put the
menu back where it belongs. In Firefox there's a very
convenient setting to enable or disable global menu
integration. Is there anything like that in LO?

BTW, I don't want to get too far off topic, but can someone
explain to me why putting the menu way off on the top of the
screen is better than keeping it close to the application?
Am I not using it correctly?

Re: [libreoffice-users] Integer degrees in Draw

If you are going to use 4.0.2, you will have to use these
degree Integers: 0 14 29 43 57 71 and 86.

I'm using 4.2.0.2/Win7 and I can type in any integer I want

completely solve your problem, but it's better than the

It is a feature that has been introduced in 4.0.

0 14 29 43 5771 and 86. Not as exact as you
