[VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY
I haven't posted any of my fly fishing poems lately, so I thought I'd share the first one of nine that I've written. Hope you enjoy it. If you'd like me to work the other eight in, just let me know. "WHY I FISH" I fish for the fun of it and the smells of it. Sometimes I fish just for the plain hell of it. I fish to enjoy the great outdoors. I fish to get away from my household chores. I fish to pit my wits against the wily trout. How he beats me with his pea sized brain is hard to figure out. I fish because it expands my mind. I also Fish because I have the time. I used to fish to get away from my job. Now I fish to avoid the "mobs" Sometimes I fish to get away from my wife, and more than once this has saved my life. I've fished with all kinds of "pretty little flies" And I plan to do so till the day I die. If as they say, trout fishing is "good for the soul," Surely Heaven's streams will always run cold. Bury me with my fly rod and my streamside kit so I can fish as I go down the River Styx. If the Styx is cold, there'll be trout. If it's hot, Well, you figure it out. You say I fish because of lust. Not so my Friend, I fish because I must! Have A Good Un. JIMMY D -- ><º> ** JIMMY D. [VFB] QFTD - The Purist
“THE PURIST” I fish with a Pflueger Pack Rod. He fishes with a Sage or a Scott. Doesn’t make any difference to the fish that we caught. Fish don’t care what rod we use and faced with a choice they’d probably not choose. The “purist” fishes a Betty McNall or other perfect fly. I fish with a Black Ant or Elk Hair Caddis cause they’re so easy to tie. “Expand your horizons, that’s where it’s at”, he says as he ties on a number 16 Claret Gnat. “Don’t be fishing those trash flies, my boy. Why don’t you try a Ferret Faced Rob Roy.” To go along with his game, I say I might try a Chauncey, or a Colorado King, or maybe a Coachman with the Royal Fan Wing. He’s thinking, “another purist I’ve found”, when I mention that I love the Royal Blue Crown. He raises his eyebrows as he ponders all that. Then he ties on a pretty Brass Hat. I say a Royal Cubbage is also good, but sometimes I prefer a Fire Coachman Trude. He says to himself, “A purist for sure, boy this is great.” But when I tie on a Chernobyl Foam Ant, we both know he’s taken my bait. “A foam ant!” Why would a purist like you stoop to something as trashy as that?” he says as he removes his tattered old hat. I say with an evil glint in my eyes, “Gotcha, my Friend. I’m not a purist. I’ll just fish my ants and Little foam flies. You fish your classics and I’ll fish my trash and when the end of the day comes we’ll see who was brash.” Jimmy D. Moore Woodway, Texas Copyright October 5, 2001 NOTE: The Ferret Faced Rob Roy and Royal Blue Crown are flies originated and first tied by Jimmy D. Moore. ><º> ****** JIMMY D. [VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY
Poem # 3 of 9. If you'd rather I not use my fly fifhing poems in liu of quotes, let me know. If no objections, I'll continue through poem # 9. Then I'll return with the Quotes. Have A Good Day ! “ME AND TROUT” If a trout bites my hook when I don’t look, How come he don’t when I do? Maybe he’s an ornery dude and Can’t stand a fisherman who’s rude And takes me for a fool A fool I may be, but ornery I ain’t And my friends will tell you so. I’m a fun loving guy although I’m quite shy, But all my friends think I’m too bold. The longer I fish, the smarter the trout, But I become more stupid without a doubt. I’ve read all the books, be that as it may, I’ll break a hook and not even look Till it’s much too late in the day. I sit on the bank as my beer goes rank, And I figure it’s time to go. I cuss my bad luck as I look for my truck And wonder if I’m getting too old. I think to myself, “old trouts must have sense” As I inwardly wince and store my gear and pole. I’ve caught not a thing, but I can still sing Cause fishing has replenished my soul. Jimmy D. Moore Woodway, Texas © May 22, 2001 ><((((º> ** JIMMY D. [VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY
FISHING TIME IN TEXAS The rains came and then they went It rained so hard my pontoon boat bent. I pulled to the bank and unloaded my gear Walked up to my truck and had a cold beer. The rain then stopped and the winds now blow. My pontoon boat across the pond does go. To the other side in my truck I wait like a fool. The wind just shifted and my pontoon did too. Back across the pond goes my pontoon craft. I follow it over, but my butt's really chapped. All wet and weary I watch the progress of my little boat. as it makes a perfect landing, just like I'd hoped. The wind has stopped, and so has the rain. The sun is out and it's FISHING TIME in Texas Again! JIMMY D. MOORE © June 22, 2004 -- ><((((º> ** JIMMY D. [VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY - MIDGES POEM
MIDGES I can't see'em, but I can hear'em And I sure as hell can feel'em. I feel'em when they get in my eyes. I feel'em when they get in my ears. I feel'em, the tiny fluttering flies, Being washed away by my tears. Yes, I feel'em, but these hands can't tie'em Alas, my friends, I'll just have to buy'em. [VFB] QUOTE - WET OR DRY ?
WET OR DRY ? Halford argued dry and Skues argued wet and that age-old argument isn't over yet! Some fish both wet and dry, but never bother to understand why. Some fish only wet and some only dry. Some don't care as long as it's a pretty fly. "Might as well fish a worm", said the dry fly man as he shifted his feet in the burning hot sand. "To catch big browns you must fish wet my friend," said the wet fly man as he slowly sipped his Gin. "I'll catch'em on top", said the dry fly man and If I try long enough, I know that I can. Why waste your time with a pretty little fly when you could go deep with something really sly countered the wet fly guy. But I must see the take, said the dry fly man, as he slowly cast his dry fly again and again. I'll fish my wet while you watch your dry, quipped the wet fly guy, his fresh hooked brown rocketing toward the sky! And the pretty little fly still floats round and round, while the dry fly guy waits patiently for his big brown. Alas, be they wet or be they dry, I'll fish them both till the day I die. Jimmy D. [VFB] Chunking & Winding vs Fly Fishing - Food for thought
I wrote this and sent it to the lists in 2002. Just came across it in my VFB file and thought it might be good to revisit it. JIMMY D Too me, the generalization that fly fishers are looked upon as a tweedy, pipe smoking, creel carrying and snobbish angler is completely off base. Many of us fly fishers perceive this to be the way we are viewed by others who prefer to catch their quary by a different means. Sure, some of the bearded "chunking & winding" good ole boy bass hunters in their $30,000 bass boats feel that way about us, but I don't think the average C&W guy is all that different from fly fishers. I have many friends who are among that fishing fraternity, and have found them more "curious" about my fly fishing and how I do it, than looking down their nose at me. Maybe it's because I still own my big bass boat, have a beard, drink a few beers and still chunk and wind on occasion. I've converted more than one "good ole boy" bass fisherman to fly fishing. All it takes is a good size bass on a 4 wt. or a bull bluegill an a 2 wt. Their next question is, "When are you going to take me trout fishing?" Each September I take five close friends, and my three sons, to New Mexico for a week-long trout expedition. Six of them still do a lot of C&W, but the highlight of their fishing year is the NM trip for browns, bows and cutts using little "flea rods" that I built for them. You recon that we fly fishers have been looking down collective noses at the C&W guy.Kind of like the Pheasant hunter looking down his nose at the Coon hunter. ;~)) Two completely different types of hunting, but hunting just the same. How many of you still do some C&W? Awww, comon - fess up! Have A Great Day -- Jimmy D. Moore, "BIGTROUTMAN" I FISH BECAUSE I MUST! [VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY
Another one from my archives. Sent this on 11/20/2003 WHAT I LEARNED FROM THE VFB. . G'Day. JIMMY D Wow, the last two days on the VFB have been something to behold. I've learned s much! I learned that Hans can cast 40 feet just using a broomstick. I learned that Henk can cast 40 feet with just his hand. I learned Tony's flight instructor was SNOOPY. I learned that Mark Romero once lived in a Cop Car. I learned that Patrick's truck blew up. I learned that Mike's computer crashed. I learned that Bart found a great buy in an Orvis bamboo. I learned that Allan doesn't like to tie Mayflies. I learned that I can't tie Tandem flies. I learned that Chris Chapman set a new record, tying three flies in two hours. I learned a million ways to keep thread from unraveling from a spool. I learned that Di Somma shops the flower section of Michaels. I learned that Del is an expert tyer of furled leaders. I learned that Paul Marriner ain't done yet. I learned to Rope Dub from DonO. I witnessed the NEW / OLD Furled Leaders thread dying in just three days. I withessed the new / old Spine vs Spline thread only lasting a little over a day. Boy, I learned a whole lot! But the most important thing I learned is that our DUTCH Lowlander friends, Hans and Henk have a sense of HUMOR after all! :-P Have A Great Day! " There should be little doubt as to the finest trout stream. It flows through paper birches and fern; through lodgepole pines and sagebrush; through the sounds of the drumming grouse and smells of a tamarack swamp. "Catching fish is not a mental game between fish and angler. A "smart" trout is only smarter than other trout, not smarter than a fisherman. [VFB] Re: for fly fishing/tying discussion only - DUH !
I've been a member of the VFB for 10 + years. And . . . .we've always treated each other as family, including births, deaths, birthdays and other info that friends pass along to each other. I said it once before when I was the MODERATOR of this list and I'll say it again. All work and no play makes for a miserable exixtence. Likewise, Posts limited strictly to fly fishing / tying makes for a very dull list. Dull lists are ones that lose membership. We gain a few members and we lose a few members. Nothing wrong with that! I for one welcome a little "banter" among members and also short family updates. Hey, don't tell a grandpaw that he can't let the list know he's just become a grandfather. Nuff Said ?!?!?! JIMMY D. [VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY
"Some time ago I was brought back to earth by an incident in one of my fishing schools. I usually show a movie call 'The Way of the Trout,' which concludes with a strong please for catch-and-release fishing. right after the final dramatic scene, which ends with the release of a large rainbow trout, an eleven-year-old boy impulsively jumped up and said, "I wouldn't let that fish go!' As he sat down, a little embarrassed, he explained,'I wouldn't let that fish go. I've never caught a fish that big.' In the awkward silence that followed, I realized that most of the people in that room - and, for that matter, he vast majority of anglers - wouldn't have let that fish go, either. I don't remember exactly what I said to that class and to that young man, but I do remember feeling awfully inadequate." Mel Kreiger in "The Essentials of Fly Fishing" ><º> ** JIMMY D. [VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY
The quote below can be applied to the VFB. The VFB exists because of Byard Miller. It's his private water, not ours. More than once, in talking with Byard, he has expressed frustration toward certain postings on the list. At one point when we were going through a similar discussion on the list, he said, "Maybe it's time that I disbanded the VFB." I begged him not to and here we are again, bickering about petty stuff. For you old timers, it's nothing new. We go through this self-cleansing about once every year or so. I just hope we can live through this one without Byard having to put his foot down. So, let's quit our bickering and get back to the simple things that this list is designed for, the things that have kept our list alive all these years. [VFB] Old Fart Swap
Morning Gang! Just thinking it's time for me to host another Swap. Those of you who have participated in one of my 15 previous ones seem to have enjoyed the fun and frivolity of my "Off the Wall" swaps. I've meistered March Madness I & II, Colors I & II, Retiree, Ham Radio, Chili Pepper, Eagle Scout, Blues I & II, Jody's Courage, Renegade, Steelhead, Redneck, & Murf Memorial. To make this one really different, I'm thinking of an OLD FART SWAP! You'll need to be at least 65 years old before the end of this year, ore thereabout. The fly you'd tie would be one of your own design, preferably one of your favorites, fly size up to you. At this point, I'm just testing the water. As those of you who have participated in my seaps before already know, there'll be around 25 participants. Could be more. Could be less, depending on the number of OLD FARTS who can still do a whip finish. :-) ;-) :-P :-D Time frame for flies to me would be around the first of February, with the usual toe tags, return postage & packaging or pre-stamped return package. I look forward to hearing from you OF's who can still tie a fly. JIMMY D -- ><º> ** JIMMY D. RULES, etc. Old Fart Swap - See below. These were listed in my original post, but evidently some of you didn't read it through. [VFB] Latest on OLD FART SWAP - dropping age limit.
I didn't mean to discriminate against those of you under 65. It just sounded like a good age to use. Also, it doesn't appear that we have many 65 or older members since only three of us have signed up. Could be a small swap at this rate. So . . . . . Maybe you can be an old fart and be 60, 55 or even 50. Doesn't AARP count age 50 as a Senior? With that said, I'm dropping the age limit to 50. One of you said, and I quote: "Would that 65 or older have to be my legal age? My wife tells me that I act like an old bitter fart all the time." So if you're 50 or older and and want to join and don't mind being called an OF, welcome aboard. To join, just reply to this email and add your name after the last name below. [VFB] OLD FART Update 10/28 # 1
RULES for OLD FART SWAP Be at least 50 years of age, or thereabout :-P , and a confirmed Old Fart. If you won't admit to being an Old Fart, I'm sure your wife will vouch for you! LOL I dropped the age limit when it seemed we didn't have enough over 65 Old Farts to make a decent Swap. AARP starts their Senior program at age 50, so there you go! Tie a fly of your own design, or whatever, preferably one of your favorites. Type of fly - trout, salmon, salt, panfish, etc., Size of fly is up to you. Time frame for flies to me would be around the first of February, with the usual toe tags, (little tags with name of fly and your name and email address), return postage & packaging or pre-stamped return package. HOW MANY FLIES TO TIE ?? At this point, you would tie 13 flies to send to me. It'll always be one fly below the total number, cause you don't need to tie one for yourself. FLY TYERS SIGNED UP AS OF 7:30 Tuesday morning, (today), are listed below. We'll give it a day or so, and take a look at how many we have signed up. Don't want to over work us Old Farts. New folks wanting to join, just hit reply and type your name below the last one on the list. Note: By your comments, I deduced that those of you listed below wanted to be an Old Fart. But . . . . if you didn't and don't want to be in the swap, let me know. Tight Lines and Smooth Whip Finishes to all. JIMMY D. SWAP IS NOW CLOSED! Communications to tyers will now be off list . RULES for OLD FART SWAP Tie a fly of your own design, or whatever. Type of fly - trout, salmon, salt, panfish, etc. Size of fly is up to you. Time frame for flies to me would be February 1, with the usual toe tags, (little tags with name of fly and your name and email address), and return postage & packaging or pre-stamped return package. Chuck, you don't need bifocals for your computer. Just go to Walmart and get a pair of plain old reading glasses. That's what I use. [VFB] Thank You VFB
Good Morning All, and a Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. I wrote the post below a couple of years ago, but when I came across it just now in my VFB file, while searching for a Quote for today, I thought it might be worth sharing again. Kinda puts things in perspective. >I've just been sitting here thinking about all the friends I've made over the years on the Virtual Fly Box, that we call the "VFB". I've met a bunch of you in person at events like Sow Bug and Fly Fish Texas and other fly fishing shows. Some of you have dropped by to visit with Jody and me. Our collective knowledge of fly fishing and fly tying simply astounds me. I've never posed a question without receiving a quick and thorough answer, sometimes several answers, all correct. Even though the rest of you I've met only through corresponding on the list, I feel that I've known you for many years. I'm proud to call all of you My Friend. You have been there for Jody and me during trying times, Jody's breast cancer, my feet, hands and shoulder problems. Jody still treasures the the shadow box with some 50 flies tied especially for her through "Jody's Courage Swap", that started with a suggestion by VFB member Rick Zieger, and was also named by Rick. Rick felt the VFB sould do something to help Jody through her cancer ordeal. She dubbed the group her "Rainbow Angels." Jody is in her 6th year of remission for her breast cancer and her yearly checkups have always given her a clean bill of health. Thanks again Rainbow Angels. You made a tremendous difference in Jody's outlook during some trying times. When Murf passed away suddenly, many of us responded to my suggestion, or was it Jeff's or Rick's?, that we do a shadow box for Murf's wife Lina. The important thing is that we did. I enjoyed meistering it and some 60 of us responded with a specially tied fly, commemorating our appreciation of Murph and to let Lina know of the many friends Murf had on the VFB. Lina was truly moved, and the shadow box hangs on their Den Wall for all to see. Lastly, because of my association with you VFB'ers, I am a better fly fisherman, a better fly tyer and a better person. We are truly a CARING FAMILY! My Best to each of you, and your spouse, and a Very Happy Thanksgiving to you and your Family. [VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY
"The truth is that live-bait fishing has a long and noble history. Live bait was totally unknown to the early caveman, who had to make do with a rather limited assortment of dry flies, nymphs, and a few streamers. One day, whether out of exasperation or simple impatience, a caveman made a backcast with a gray hackle he had not bothered to remove from a sage hen. Instantly, it was taken by a brontosaurus. The caveman was elated by his discovery, even though it was several centuries before anyone learned how to take the brontosaurus off the hook." Catfish are socially unacceptable! Your basic trout angler stands in a glossy-magazine river idyll, sporting a military mustache, clothes by Ralph Lauren, vest by Orvis. His cat-fishing counterpart is a gap-toothed yokel in stained coveralls with a cheek full of Red Man and a caterpillar cap, hoisting a slimy monster with all the presence of a feed sack full of bowling balls. [VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY
May is when the bluegills on Alabama's Pickwick Lake really turn on. It's an outstanding time to catch 20 to 30 sunfish for the table in a couple hours of fishing in the early morning or late evening. Typically, we catch filleting-sized bream - bluegills weighing between 1/2 to 3/4 pound - with redear weighing up to 14 ounces. These big fish produce a huge filet. The latter species is the redear sunfish, more commonly known as the shellcracker. 100 fish days are common." Donny Lowrie Fisheries Scientist, Tennessee Valley Authority * The above lake is where I learned to fly fish. Dad bought me one of those boxed $10 Japanese made bamboo fly rods and there began my love affair with fly fishing. I distinctly remember driving through the Mayfly hatches on the way to Pickwick. They were so thick that we'd have to stop several times to clean them off. But all that was forgotton when we got on the water with Mayflies dropping all around us with the bluegills going ' pop, pop, pop' as they sucked the flies under. The first time we went we caught 116 bluegills - bream. I'll never forget the number, for I was the one saddled with the job of cleaning them! Trout fishing with flies is great, but you haven't lived until you experience a Mayfly hatch on Pickwick. Wet flies, dry flies, popping bugs, it makes no difference to the gills. ******** ><º> ** JIMMY D. [VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY
"Successful fly fisHing for trout is an act of high deceit; not only must the angler lure one of nature's subtlest and wariest creatures, he must do so with something that is false and no good - an artificial fly. Thus fake and sham lie at the heart of the enterprise. The amount of machiavellian subtlety, guild and sly deception that ultimately becomes wrapped up in the person of an experienced trout fisherman is faintly boring to contemplate.".. . . to be continued tomorrow. [VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY
Fontinued from yesterday. " . . . . Thus fiendishly qualified for a brilliant diplomatinc career he instead has time only to fish. So lesser diplomats continue to grope and bumble and their countries continue to fall into war. The only hope for it all, I'm afraid, is for the Lord to drive the trout fishermen into diplomacy or else drive the diplomats to trout fishing. My guess is that either way we'd be more apt to have more peace: the fishermen-turned diplomats would hurriedly resolve their differences on the trout stream so that they might return to their fishing, while the diplomats-turned-fiehermen would shortly become so absorbed in their new passion they'd never again find time for war." [VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY
" Fishermen are a perverse and restless lot, constantly poised to migrate to greener pastures, ever helpless recruits for the wild goose chase. They're apt to be up and away at the drop of an idle rumor. Indeeed this willingness to pursue the will-o-the-wisp of the true trout fairyland, the curious readiness to chase bubbles, mirages, and rainbows up and down the land, seems to make up hjalf the lure of fishing. Some wild-eyed mosquito-crazed character sidles up to another fisherman and furtively mumbles, 'I just heard of a place where they splash waves in your face' - and off they zoom to the moon, gaily negotiating seven cedar swamps on the way." [VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY - WHISKEY FISHING
I thought a little levity was in order for the day, since all we hear and see is how bad things are. Yep, I wrote this, so if you take issue with any part of it or don't get even a tiny laugh, just E-mail me. . . . . . . Oh never mind. Me, I don't give a damn. Have a Good Un! JIMMY D " In my younger days, some of my buds and I played in a Twi-Light golf tournament each Wednesday evening during the summer. Entry fee was $10. Cheap enough. At each Tee Box was a garbage can of iced down Lone Star Beer. Seemed that the more we drank, the better we played and whether or not we won the pot, we didn't care. Most of us got our $10 back in the beer we drank. That was the most fun I ever had playing golf. I remember putting out on the 18th with onlooker's cars parked in the grass and their headlights shining on the green so we could see how to putt, those of us who could still stand up. :-P I'm sure we could work something similar with trout fishing and whiskey. ( I chose whiskey instead of beer, since that's our stereotype image - pipe smoking, fancy whiskey drinking, tweedy, hoite toite Abercrombie & Fitch appearance.) 18 garbage cans of cold whiskey would be a little 'over the top', so we could use small buckets filled with miniatures of our favorite whiskeys, placing them in the cold water at the edge of selected pools, riffles and runs. Total cost would be minimal as would the entry fee. It would be understood that we'd each down a bottle of our preference at each placement of the whiskey. It'd be great fun and we wouldn't give a damn who won or if we caught any trout. This being a whiskey drinking contest, fish caught wouldn't count anyway. ;-) Those still standing at the end would be declared the winner(s) and would receive a 'Texas Fifth' of McKendric Mesquite Mellowed whiskey - McKendric Longhorn Creek or McKendric Western. Each of us would probably need a 'designated caster' after downing dozen or so bottles. His job would also entail keeping us from drowning and seeing us home safely. Why would Abercrombie & Fitch types stoop so low as to enter an event like this? Why indeed? Most folk of this type boast of how much whiskey they can drink and still be standing. I think it's called PRIDE. In this case, PRIDE BEFORE THE FALL ! :-P My money would be on the bourbon drinkers, since we're not quite as tweedy, and therefore tougher than the A&F bunch. ><º> ** JIMMY D. [VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY
"Ordinarily the man accustomed to a 9-foot fly rod would reduce to one about 7 feet long and feel that he was equipped for working a small brook. This, I beg to point out, is only the palest concession to that kind of angling. If we chop 4 feet off that, however, the remaining 3 foot length will permit casting from almost any position. I use mine right or left-handed, with the tip pointing almost at the water. Because of the length and essentially greater line speed, the rod throws tight loops, which permits casting under obstacles with relative ease. There is no tendency to "hook" casts off the target, as you certainly must when casting with a longer rod in a purely horizontal plane." "Fishing with McClane" by A. J. McLane ><((((º> ** JIMMY D. [VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY
"It is not every man who should go a-fishing, but there are many who would find this their true rest and recreation of body and mind. And having, either in boyhood or in later-life, learned by experience how pleasant it is to go a-fishing, you will find , as Peter found, that you are drawn to it whenever you are weary, impatient, or sad. From "I Go A-Fishing" by W C Prime 1892 "The Legend of the White Mountains" ><((((((((º> ** JIMMY D. [VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY
"Unpacking one's kit is like meeting old friends. Every marred fly, every frayed leader, every well-worn tip and line and reel, revives pleasant memories of river, pool or camp-fire, of "rise," or "strike," or struggle, only less real than the reality itself, for "only itself can be its parallel."
