If all goes well, here is where you will need to spend a few dollars.
You will need iChatUSBCam. $9.95

Now, your USB cam should all be set to work with ichat, skype and the

I installed both maccam and ichatusbcam. I'm not really sure if both
are actually needed though. I do know that you need ichatusbcam if you

Hope that helps.

[videoblogging] My new video obsession....

2007-07-06 Thread schlomo rabinowitz
Hey all

Lately my small life has become consumed with making videos on the
Facebook. I'm not sure why.. you dont get stats, you cant see who has been
watching them, and you don't get an RSS feed. In fact, all you can do is
record into the web browser and tag it with your friends names if they are
in the video-- you cant even make up your own tags!!

But its become a very intimate connector for me. It's like Ruperts
Twittervlog, but without the expensive camera and monthly phone plan.

Blip.tv used to have a similar feature early-on that only worked in Safari.
I remember using it in a similar way, but the Facebook version is really
well done and should be abused by all videobloggers!

Its strange, but for some reason I enjoy making these sorts of videos this
way, but on my personal site I want to make stories in a different way.
With the In-Browser Recording, I like to just communicate in an instant
messenger sort of way. Does that make sense to anyone else? It's the
immediacy of the process that I enjoy (again, it helps me understand why
Rupert and Steve get excited about their phones)

Anyway, here are the couple I've done: <

I encourage you to make some of your own! Right now!

Re: [videoblogging] My new video obsession....

2007-07-06 Thread Kary Rogers
Yes, it is so easy and quick. The weekend I bought my MacBook Pro
(with built in iSight) I started playing with video on facebook
(http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=510268286366 - prolly
can't see unless you're my friend on facebook, feel free to add me).
A friend of mine bought a MBP the weekend before me and we found it
easy and fun to have a video conversation by tagging each other. It
got out of hand a bit and turned into something else that we decided
to take off of facebook (http://vlogfight.blogspot.com) because it is
a limited viewing environment.

I tried to find another more open place to post quick and easy videos
but none I found do it as well as facebook. And if the type of video
you are making is meant to be more intimate, it works out really well.

RE: [videoblogging] My new video obsession....

2007-07-06 Thread Devlon Duthie
I am enjoying the video on 'the facebook' a lot. One thing that I noticed,
is that I can't get rss out, etcand I was kind of ok with that?

Is the heat getting to me, I mean media, locked up behind a login.

I started watching earlier today, but got interrupted. Happy Birthday!

It's like the iSight was built for you, Schlomo. Very few people
could make films as entertaining as that with their MBPs. I bet no
one else's MBP iSight videos will get shown at Pixelodeon next year.

And it feels different somehow that it's on Facebook... sorry - "the
Facebook". Nicer forum for it than just a mass video sharing site or
a blog. (that reminds me - I saw on Viddler they're giving away
iPhones to people who make 30 second MeToday videos this month.)

What you say makes total sense to me - the immediacy and satisfaction
of it. It's been low maintenance creative fun for me to snap stuff,
cut it occasionally in the phone and just send it off. You only
have to worry about what's in front of the camera - you haven't got
half your brain in the future, thinking about downloading,
compressing, uploading, posting, etc and whether what you're shooting
is worth the effort down the line. So it just frees you to just Do
Stuff. The little creative muscles need flexing as well as the big
ones.

Not that mine would be as fun as yours, but I'd love to be able to do
it. God DAMN, i wish i could afford a Macbook Pro (the phone i use
was a free upgrade btw, and the phone plan is pretty average - all
data goes via regular wifi). I am in webcam hell with this
Powerbook. The other night i had to use my big old XL1 DV camera as
a webcam for the flashmeeting - and then it ran out of battery. And
I'd left the power cord somewhere.

Anybody have a Powerbook with a webcam that actually works well?
With iChat, etc? Care to let me know what it is??

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Lies, Damned Lies And Statistics

2007-07-06 Thread Ron Watson
We've had our Blip show, the Art of K9Disc, for exactly 19 months.
86 episodes
46,488 views
6 episodes over 1000 views
Our most viewed video has 1,441 views.

Over at Daily Motion (Have not been there in Months):
5 Episodes
4,504 views

On You Tube where we've dropped a few episodes over the last 11 months:
11 epidosdes
8,873 total views
4, 267 is our most viewed video (same vid...different place)
1 episode over 1000 views.

Over at youtube, some of our older videos have been posted by other
people, and the most viewed is the same video with, last time I
checked, over 14,000 views. We have a few more old skool vids show up
that had up to a couple thousand views.

I've been posting video online for about 10 years now, starting in
1997 with K9Athlete.com. It was supposed to be a video site and
training resource (the best way to learn how to jam with your dog is
to watch good people doing it). Back then, a T1 line in Dallas was
only about $800. I was doing a lot of flash development, just
learning, really, actionscripting, friction, animation and stuff, and
I was going to make it happen. A Discdog training resource with video.

Then we moved, lost hi-speed internet for a year, killing my
creativity and bandwidth exploded in terms of cost. I was out of the
video production thing quick.

I shifted focus to setting up a community, and found blip in December
2005.

With the ease of posting and distributing video, Blip got the fire
going again

This is what our community looks like now: http://k9disc.com

It's really cool. Joomla, SMF Forum, Blip Widgets,

But, back to the Youtube reposts and some lying stats...

I was actually quite happy to find the videos posted up on You Tube.
Sure I wish I had gotten the credit, and the ability to push traffic
to our site, but lots of people were taught something, or forced to
smile and feel good for a few, and besides they were old vids, and I
had not posted them, as they were lost and not that important to post.

I think we're doing better on blip because of the distribution blip
affords us, and the fact that we have a community that relies on
blip. There are lots of discdoggers posting there and pushing their
vids out to people that visit k9disc.com. It's really nice.

Thanks to all that shared some of their stats and such. It was good
to go back and take a look at our stats. It's not really been that
important to me of late.

Cheers,

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Lies, Damned Lies And Statistics

2007-07-06 Thread Mike Meiser
The thought occurs to me that is amazing is you start adding up this
long tail of pag views... all of you combined and it starts adding up
pretty quick.

I'm very pleased with the way blip is going and it certainly seems to
be attracting a lot of big groups that are aimed at making "shows" or
episodic and entertainment content and helping those groups monetize
their work. Something youtube has failed at... and youtube has also
failed at letting people control their brand.

Anyway, the vlogosphere has two sides and the key is that it grows up
as not only an entertainment industry... but also as a communications
industry.

The communications industry model is much tougher. Entertainment
monetization is all about advertising. Maybe a la carte media sale
like Cruxy.org too. But the communications industry favors "freemium
services"... pro-level services like flickr PRO... OR as google has
demonstrated time and again, most recently with making Feedburner
Pro-level free... supporting those services with advertising,
tracking and other high level means that only become available when
they're massed in large quanities which is to say when markets
meet a critical mass.

Anyway, I hope as these numbers start to quickly add up wether there's
you intend vlogging like you share photos... or wether you intend to
aim at a mass market that blip.tv and others (like mefeedia) will find
new metrics... favoriting, thumbs up, subscriptions, comments, etc.,
etc. to accurately represent no matter what is important to you.

For mounting camera's on dashboards, I guess I would suggest using a
little tiny tripod that is attached to a beadbag. The nice thing
about a bean bag is that it conforms to what it sits on, and IF you
replace the beans (or whatever) with steel shot, then it will be heavy
enough to actually stay where you put it, without doing permanent
damage to the dash. Also it allows you to move it to the seat, or
wherever. It also comes in very handy when you are doing an interview
at a table that you want to have the camera stable but not so hard to
setup. I suggest a tripod simply because you want to the ability to
adjust the angle of shooting.

So a litte bitty tripod - very short - you mostly want the head,
mounted to a steelshot bag.

have fun!

(it's the fastest, capable of streaming video live)

For finding free wi-fi the best place I found is

Print their Directory so you don't NEED wi-fi to find wi-fi.

1. The driver should not be the camera person. ;-)

2. Pre-plan everything in case the milk of human kindness does not
bring up logging for the night. Unless you've got the RV.

3. I'm thinking if you are going to post 365 days you are gonna want
to know every free wi-fi, Internet cafe and library on you trip around
the country. Kinko's will kill your budget if you don't know where the
free Internet resources are in a community.

4. Get to know your camcorder really well.

5. Have more than one. Maybe a good DV camcorder for the long
interviews and something like the http://tinyurl.com/3xjxe6 camcorder
for taking around town showing videos of the outdoors sights without
drawing attention to the camcorder. It's good for daylight stuff and
you can plug it into your laptop easy.

I have to put myself to bed but I'll stew on it. I'm sure others will
pipe in as well.

Re: [videoblogging] HI, I am new here

2007-07-06 Thread Rupert
Hi Amy,
Great idea. Great adventure...
I'm subscribed, now.

Gena has great advice. I would also say to always remember the
networks online, where you can ask questions and shoot the breeze and
connect with some of your viewers. As well as asking questions here
and joining facebook, flickr, etc - join Twitter. You can keep up
with it via your cellphone as well as online. And add ruperthowe and
then look for the other vloggers I talk to and add them too. Then
they'll add you back and will hear what you say, and you can chat and
ask questions at all times of day and night and tell people when
you've posted another film. It's social networking at its lightest
and most immediate.

You're going to be posting a lot, too - so you need to get your
workflow down and speed up your processes, cos otherwise you'll spend
your whole life editing, compressing and uploading video, nevermind
the shooting and the maintenance of the blog. It can be a real
hassle. There are lots of tips for good ways to do things at
freevlog.org. It can be *super* lightweight - I shoot and cut on my
phone and email the video over a wifi connection to Blip, who then
automatically crosspost it to my Blog. But I'm sure you'll want more
camera and editing power than that. Play with it, see what you can
streamline so that it's more fun than chore.
Have fun :)

Hi Everyone,
My name is Amy. I have been podcasting in various forms for about 3
years, maybe more.
Our next adventure is up on our new website http://
www.ayearatthewheel.com.
Here's our videoblog intro: http://www.lulu.tv/vlog/evilNOW.com

My husband and I are preparing to embark on a year long cross country
adventure to cover
the election and find out what the American people really think -
Ever notice how we are
all
made out to be idiots that "can't handle the truth"?

Big plans for two non-voters, I know.

We have a portable digital recorder from Marantz - which is awesome,
digital and film
cameras, and two video cams, so we are set to see it all and catch it
all on film/audio/
photos
for others to experience with us.

Anyone have any advice, suggestions, or a floor to crash on?
Thanks,
Amy
