(Meghann Matwichuk-Rhonda Rosen Hi Rhonda, Meghann and other Media librarians I want to give some of my experience with DVDs, 1) DVDs are tricky pieces of metal, they work on one device and behave badly on another, the following tale will explain : In a public screening in JCC Utopia in Brooklyn towards the end (50 min) of a 70 minute screening of Rafting to Bombay the DVD stopped and the operator could not run it to the end, he had a another DVD it had the same problem , he checked both on his own home DVD they had this problem, he sent them back to me, we checked them, both worked perfectly. As a client is always correct we compensated the JCC . My conclusion and experience is that the same DVD works on one device and not on another, but usually computers read them without a problem . 2) another problem is scratches on the DVD that occur en-route by post, as the postal services squeeze the packets, the plastic casing (book size 19 X13 cms) tend to crack , the bubble sheeted envelopes don't give enough protection so now I use ordinary recycled paper envelopes and pad the DVD with carton cut out of discarded cartons, and put the DVD into a plastic sleeve that goes into the bigger book size casing, giving double protection, I believe I have solved this problem. 3) I'm distributing a French film Murder of a Hatmaker I received from the producer Multi-zone DVDs but they didn't work on NTSC players in USA , I had to make NTSC copies and replace the ones I already distributed in America. I hope my experience helps in deciding if to check or not DVDs Cheers Nahum Laufer http://onedayafterpeace.com/index.php http://docsforeducation.com/ Sales Docs for Education Erez Laufer Films Holland st 10 Afulla 18371 Israel videolib@lists.berkeley.edu -Original Message- From: videolib-boun...@lists.berkeley.edu [mailto:videolib-boun...@lists.berkeley.edu] On Behalf Of videolib-requ...@lists.berkeley.edu Sent: Tuesday, July 03, 2012 10:52 PM To: videolib@lists.berkeley.edu Subject: videolib Digest, Vol 56, Issue 4 Send videolib mailing list submissions to videolib@lists.berkeley.edu To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit https://calmail.berkeley.edu/manage/list/listinfo/video...@lists.berkeley.ed u or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to videolib-requ...@lists.berkeley.edu You can reach the person managing the list at videolib-ow...@lists.berkeley.edu When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific than Re: Contents of videolib digest... There aren't many problems, but this doesn't take much time. We have any DVD-Rs or very expensive films watched from start to finish. We do turn up problems in some DVD-Rs, especially from a few key vendors, so we feel this is very important even though it takes some time. We don't want a problem discovered after the film has been added to the collection and is being used in a class. Best, * Meghann Matwichuk, M.S. [Videolib] The VRT Membership Booth Needs You!
Hi VRT Members! VRT will have a booth at the upcoming Annual Conference in Anaheim, California, and we are seeking volunteers to staff it. It’s a great opportunity to promote VRT and video librarianship in general. We need coverage Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 to 5:00. Two-hour shifts are ideal, but 1-hour shifts are also welcome. We’re hoping to have two volunteers for each hour. If you are attending and can help us out, please let me know what days/times you want and I will add you to the schedule. You can view the current schedule on the VRT wiki at: http://vrt.ala.org/wiki/index.php?title=VRT_Booth_Schedule. The schedule is wide open right now, so now is your chance to get a prime spot! Today marks my 33rd anniversary with the University, and this year my 36th as a librarian (a fact which seems more than a little surreal to me). I’ve been director of the Media Center for about 28 of those years, and there hasn’t been week, good or bad, that has gone by without my murmuring a little thanks for the cosmic hiccups that allowed me to stumble into such a cool and personally rewarding gig. I simply cannot think of anywhere that I would have been happier professionally, or another position in which I would have grown and learned and contributed as much. In some sense, I feel a bit like Mark Twain, who was born during the fiery appearance of Halley’s Comet, and who went out with its reappearance, 74 years later. I began my career in media in the early 80s, at the dawn of the home video age (or the “Video Revolution” as it was often hyperbolically called in the library literature at the time). I’m bowing out of the business at a time when the technologies and economics of video production and distribution, and the video content universe itself are again in a state of radical flux. Along with these changes, video collections and service in libraries are also bound to experience major tremors and evolutionary shifts. I’m not sure whether I’m leaving the scene feeling sanguine or pessimistic about this future, but in any case it’s definitely going to be an interesting and challenging next decade. I am going to miss all my long-time professional pals profoundly, both those on the library side and the distributor side of the fence. I grew up with a number of you in this field, and along the way you’ve become a kind of extended workaday family, complete with the obstreperous get-togethers, occasional bickering, and comforting sympathy. I’m also heartened by the number of young, creative, and energetic colleagues who have hopped on board in more recent times. Definitely makes me less gloomy about prospects for the future. Not sure exactly what I’m going to do next: I’d like to continue teaching film somewhere on campus or off; I’m up for grabs as a consultant; want to write a bit; gotta catch up on all the national cinemas I’ve given short-shrift to over the years; want to log in more gym time; would like to hone my banjo and ukulele-playing chops; want to get back to freelance cartooning and illustration. At very least, I’m aiming at becoming an accomplished and well-known Berkeley flâneur and café personality. As for the fate of the UC Berkeley Media Resources Center… In light of the dire economic straits into which UC has been shoved, it is almost completely unlikely that my position will be filled any time soon. The future of the redoubtable MRC collection and website remains murky, at best. I can’t really think about all of this too much; it’s just too damn depressing to ponder, and I’ve got other things on my mind. In other words, après moi, le deluge, and there’s not a damn thing I can do about it. For the time being, Gisele Tanasse (MLIS), crack MRC Operations Czarina, will look after the shop. She has also graciously agreed to keep an administrative eye on videolib and videonews. (Note, however, that she’s going out on maternity leave from May until around the end of September, so you’re pretty much on your own during that hiatus. Play nice!). Gisele’s email is gtana...@library.berkeley.edu. I’ll be around and wrapping things up for the next few months. My civilian email address after June is going to be garyhand...@gmail.com and I’m also on Facebook. I’d love to stay in touch (but please don’t contact me about anything having to do with copyright or fair use). Best of luck for the future, comrades! Continue fighting the good fight. [Videolib] digitizing - procedural question
Hello everyone, I have probably addressed this issue on this listserve ad nauseum, but It's my birthday today and feel entitled to be, well just entitled. :) So, our ITS department have begun digitizing videos, burning dvds for faculty upon request. We have made it clear to them that they are not allowed to do this with library owned items, as we would want to make sure the VHS tape was truly not available, contact copyright holders, blah, blah blah. - that is my job. 1)do you digitize a whole video/burn a dvd to a duplicate if the item is a legitimately purchased personal copy owned by the faculty? 2) Does it matter why they want a copy? If they want it for instructional use, do you want to be notified so that you can purchase a DVD copy for your library? 3) I know some of you make clips for faculty from your collection- if you are NOT the dept. doing it, are you notified that Prof. X has made a clip from one of your films and put it on a coursepage? Or, do you not keep track/is there a reason to keep track of who's digitizing what? Just curious. I think I'm feeling a little disconnected as it is not the library who is in control of making copies. Rhonda Rhonda Rosen| Head, Media Access Services William H. Re: [Videolib] digitizing - procedural question
Right. I get it that they are outside the law, which is why they aren't us, and why we don't want them full-copying any library owned items. --And, it is this last criteria that I want to have some input on -faculty don't search out availability wellif it ain't at Target, it must be unavailable, right? I was more wondering about what the procedure and communication was - if any, by others - more for collection development purposes. I want to know and be able to Purchase items for faculty, rather than them asking anyone for a copy to be made, and wondered if others have inter-department communication about such matters. Happy Birthday, Rhonda! Thought I'd get the jump on Jessica here: For an institution, making a DVD copy copyrighted vhs tape is really only allowable if the process adheres to the terms and conditions of Section 108 of the copyright law. Basically, you can copy if: 1) you're a library or similar archive 2) you provide free public access to collection 3) you've determined that the original (tape) is at some risk of physical disintegration, or if it shows signs of damage 3) the copy is used within the library or archive (or at least on campus for purposes of teaching...this parenthetical remark of mine is based on advice from legal counsel with whom I'm working as part of a Mellon grant). So...my lay opinion is that what you're IT guys are doing is illegal...pretty patently illegal, because NONE of the 108 conditions are being met, and there aren't any more legal outs. Period. Doesn't matter if the original is legally acquired, you simply can't transfer formats or make copies without permission, outside of the 108 provisions. Yes, this was what I was looking for! A wonderful birthday gift, Thanks Gail! In response to your questions: 1) The Media Library not duplicate anything. The TV studio (one of three departments that includes the Media Library) will not accept duplication requests without sending the requestor to me for verification of permission. We will duplicate faculty-owned video or department-owned video for campus instruction purposes IF, and only IF, I can secure permission. 2) If the faculty member wants a copy of a documentary that they are not going to use in class (they just don't want to keep up with VHS tape anymore), I will assist with securing permission, but the TV studio charges them for the duplication when it's identified as not supporting instruction. Yes, I prefer to purchase the requested title for the Media Library collection. I pursue permission for almost nothing that falls in the feature film realm. A feature film has to be at least as old as I am before I'll put time and energy into pursuing permission. 3) Our IT division operates a faculty technology lab on campus where faculty can get help crafting non-print materials, digitizing print materials, etc. to supplement their coursework on D2L. That lab does not notify me when our programs show up there to be excerpted, etc. I wish they would, but since their take on making copies is pretty typical for IT folk, they don't feel the need to let me know. Over the years, I have developed good relationships with a number of faculty who have asked us to make copies and were happy not to be told no outright. I've actually been able to secure permission for a number of titles; for others, I have purchased the available DVDs; for a few, we've made Section 108 copies. But before I invoke Section 108, I make sure the faculty member understands the limitations on use and offer to help find a suitable alternative. Videolib is always the most valuable source of information to help find a long-lost copyright holder, even if the initial information turns out to be a jumping off point. Filmakers Library is now part of Alexander Street Press, but it's there and it's not disappearing, the Filmakers Library staff are still doing their splendid work with community of film makers, as before. You ask about the future. We'll be, as you say, scouting for new titles. We expect Filmakers Library to continue to grow. I admire ASP, but the business model they've established for video doesn't make my heart sing. There are lots of reasons why streamed-only content doesn't work well in academic library contexts, and the model whereby single titles are not available for purchase and licensing is really a serious problem as well. Also, I'm wondering what the future of Filmakers Library new acquisitions is going to be: Is ASP simply buying the FL backlist, or will they actively be scouting for new titles... Re: [Videolib] media circulation at same desk as regular circ?
We are a small university (only 6500ish FTE). We just moved into our new library last year, with staffing 'til 2am most nights. Student workers and training them is such a headache, I proposed combining our desks (I technically oversee them both). Circ on first floor; media/reserves on the 2nd floor. The idea was not only to combine student workforce and save money, but also to combine the two public services staffs a bit (those who worked with the Circ counter supervision and Reserves on the first floor/others who deal with shelvers, media ordering, cataloging on second floor)A great idea I thought, however due to the fact that the building is brand new, it was deemed not appropriate to already change things around and take down a counter area that had just been built Timing is everything, and unfortunately, it didn't occur to me 2-3 years ago when planning the building that it should be done. Alas and alack.maybe in a couple more years :) Rhonda Rhonda Rosen| Head, Media Access Services William H. There's talk here of getting rid of the media desk, and merging it with the regular circulation desk, in an attempt to same money on the staff budget. I don't like this, but I'm not sure why. We have two collections--one which circulates to students, and I'm sure that could be handled at the circ desk. But we also have a teaching collection, which is booked for faculty in advance--or, which happens often, faculty can call us and book titles on the spot. These videos don't circulate outside of the Library, except for use by faculty in classes, or for faculty preview. It seems to me that having two service desks is a good idea, to relieve stress and congestion. But I don't have any evidence for this, and I'm a committee of one, the only Media Librarian here, and thus, I have a vested interest in keeping a separate media desk. Has anyone gone through this? Does anyone have any ideas pro or con for merging media operations with the print circulation desk? Any help/feedback would be much appreciated! I suspect that the percentage is far higher with educational, non fiction material than standard feature films. Many companies gone, rights and materials in limbo. Things will continue to trickle out, but the economics make it prohibitive for a rights holder to release a lot of less popular material, some of which may be dated. I suspect that with feature films the number released on DVD that were never released on VHS might be equal or higher. While there are important rights and materials issues per above in most cases these films would make it to DVD IF there was enough of a market. However just a reminder , do not throw out films on VHS that you can not replace on DVD. Even if you don't want them somebody else might so at least post here before junking anything. [Videolib] anyone have this problem?
We licensed many of the Alexander Street Press video collections a year or so ago. They are lovely and beautiful. However, we have had a problem with our proxy server and remote access. They are perfect if the user is on campus, but we cannot get off-campus access. Our IT people have looked into it, as has Alexander Street Press. Somewhere along the IPS provider route, we hit a snag and nobody seems to be able to fix it. The story I'm being given is that the provider somewhere in the country, is unable to fix it, unreachable, untouchable or something According to memos I received: Using the traceroute utility, which shows the communication hops that data makes over the Internet between WAM (Web Access Management) and the Alexander Street servers, we can see that communication between these servers gets stopped at a midway-point. This unscheduled stop is at a server hosted by a company called Verio. Bypassing WAM, this same Verio server passes the data right along. LMU's ITS Department has been very helpful. They tried to contact Verio about this, but they warned me that we might never hear back. So far, that has been true: no response from Verio. It seems that many of you have ASP and are happily streaming away - has anyone had this problem, or know anything about this company? I'm really frustrated as faculty would like to embed clips in their syllabi, BB, or our electronic reserves and as it now stands their students have to call and get a username and password to access it if off-campus, which is really a pain Rhonda Rhonda Rosen| Head, Media Access Services William H.
