I've changed the subject line, since you've left the BBC Radio 3 topic.

This is something like my experience occasionally. When you double-click on a
item to download it, your iPhone will say, connecting... Then it may or may
not connect to the download. if it doesn't after a while, close out and restart
your phone. then reopen the App Store, and double-tap on your search to try to
resume. You might then get a message, iPhone was unable to connect, or
something similar, so go down to OK and double-tap OK. now you will be prompted
for your password the next time you attempt to download. This is iTunes kicking
in. Type your password. the download should begin and the install complete.

I type in Google Maps and one of the options is Google Maps for IPhone.
When I double click this, I don't seem to be able to get any further.
When I swipe around, there doesn't appear to be a free or any other button on

I suppose it's subjective, but I would think most people would agree that using
the App Store on your iPhone would be the easiest way to go.
Bring up the App Store app on your iPhone, double tap the share tab at the
bottom of the screen, double tap in the search field and type your search
string, which would probably be iPlayer in this case. You can then select from
the list of suggestions below the edit field or double tap the search button at
the right of the keyboard to kick off a complete search.

When the information on the iPlayer app comes up, double tap on the free button
and then on the install button. You'll be prompted for your Apple ID password.
After it's installed, you can double tap the open button or look for it in your
last home page.

I hope this helps. I also hope it's accurate. I'm in a hurry, so I'm doing this
from memory.

Microsoft does help make the internet more accessible and safer, but
this issue is bigger than Microsoft. Mozilla didn't write the Wevvisum
plug in for Firefox, that was done by someone other than the browser
developer. IE does allow for plugins to be developed.

Solving image captchas is just a stop gap solution since captcha
technology will keep changing. IMHO, this has to be solved through a
combination of technology and advocacy.

If it's solved at the browser level then you're leaving out the other
browsers, such as Chrome, Safari and so on.

If it's solved on a web site by web site basis then there's no reason
for Microsoft's competitors, like Google, Apple, Yahoo! and so on to
adopt whatever Microsoft comes up with.

Microsoft can't dictate what happens on the web or on everyone's desktop
like they could 20 years ago, and although this has some down sides, it
also has some advantages, such as choice and innovation.

As for WebVisum the CAPTCHA-solving plugin that work with firefox,
they can't get it working with internet Explorer because they don't
have access to the Microsoft coding for IE and it would be too
expensive for them to get it. that was the story there, and i think
it still is. SomeCAPTCHA's are harder to resolve, because they are
dynamic (i.e. changing within a short time), than others are.

They need to make security accessible with alternatives that
work for everyone, not just those with eyes to see it with. I
thought I had an account, but it does not work and I suppose
maybe I could use the one my husband had, might work if only I
knew the password for it but someone night get suspicious since
he is no longer on my bank account. Kind of difficult for him
to use his account since he passed in May. Good thing I guess
since he can't spend on more junk.

I will always maintain that if a CAPTCHA is of necessity then
there needs to be a solid reasonable way for someone who can't
read it to be able to use an alternative that isn't difficult to
use. I don't care what browser is used, it should have an
alternative.

There are lots of elderly persons out there on the internet that
can't see enough to read those things, what do they do whether
they use magnification software, screen readers or large
monitors. Isn't this what accessibility is all about, access
for everyone?

Don't get me started, I have one very difficult time getting
Google's audible to work, it was so fuzzy it took weeks before I
finally got a code I could type in fast enough not to generate
another one and it was more dumb luck than skill that finally
got me in. My late husband had trouble reading it also and give
up on it long before I did. They left me no way to communicate
the difficulty. Great search engine, no customer support that I
know of, no way to let them know one can't understand the
audible they provide. I mostly use it for this account and my
searches, have no real interest in trying other features that
may make me encounter that process again.

I should not have to have a specific browser, one I don't

First click on the search tab and type Google Maps in the edit field at
the top of the screen. Now double tap on the search button on the right
hand side of the virtual keyboard or select Google Maps for the iPhone
from the list of suggestions at the top of the page. In the next screen
that comes up, you should have a list of results; the first one on my
list is Google Maps, and right below it I see a button labeled Free
Google Maps. If it's labeled open then you already have Google Maps
installed. If it's labeled download then you've installed it and then
removed it. If you double tap this button, it'll switch to say install,
and if you double tap that, then you'll be prompted for your Apple ID
password and Google Maps will be installed. You'll find it on your last
home page.

No, anyone can subscribe to NFL AudioPass and use the NFL Mobile app
to listen to radio broadcasts of different games. I did it all last
season, and I'm with ATT. There seems to be a problem with the

Re: PayPal Mobile Site Now Worse Than Ever With the Change Payment Option

Just curious, have you tried using a different browser that can spoof a desktop
browser ID?I'm not sure if this would interfere with authentication, but maybe
the desktop version of the site isn't as touchy. Then again, the mobile site
goes catatonic when you try to perform a simple operation, so who knows... :)

First click on the search tab and type Google Maps in the edit field at the top
of the screen. Now double tap on the search button on the right hand side of
the virtual keyboard or select Google Maps for the iPhone from the list of
suggestions at the top of the page. In the next screen that comes up, you
should have a list of results; the first one on my list is Google Maps, and
right below it I see a button labeled Free Google Maps. If it's labeled open
then you already have Google Maps installed. If it's labeled download then
you've installed it and then removed it. If you double tap this button, it'll
switch to say install, and if you double tap that, then you'll be prompted for
your Apple ID password and Google Maps will be installed. You'll find it on
your last home page.

I type in Google Maps and one of the options is Google Maps for IPhone.
When I double click this, I don't seem to be able to get any further.
When I swipe around, there doesn't appear to be a free or any other button on
 the search results screen.

I suppose it's subjective, but I would think most people would agree that
using the App Store on your iPhone would be the easiest way to go.
Bring up the App Store app on your iPhone, double tap the share tab at the
bottom of the screen, double tap in the search field and type your search
string, which would probably be iPlayer in this case. You can then select
from the list of suggestions below the edit field or double tap the search
button at the right of the keyboard to kick off a complete search.

When the information on the iPlayer app comes up, double tap on the free
button and then on the install button. You'll be prompted for your Apple ID
password. After it's installed, you can double tap the open button or look
for it in your last home page.

I hope this helps. I also hope it's accurate. I'm in a hurry, so I'm doing
 this from memory.

Hello Andrew,

I'm afraid that Kobo isn't accessible on an iPad. It works great on an iPhone,
but the important page transition type is not available in the iPad version.

On an iPhone, the page transition style must be set to Scrolling for Kobo to be
accessible.

Cheers,

RE: iphone and blood pressure monitoring

2014-08-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
WE should see blood pressure devices which work with the iPhone hopefully
soon since Apple's new Health app and the health kid for devlopers allows
companies to develop both hardware devices as well as apps which will work
well with the iPhone. Apple is working with at least one manufacturer of
medical devices, I think it was something like Epic Systems, but I can't
quite remember, and I'm sure there will be more just as there will be more
in the area of home automation. Both health kit and home kit are features of
iOS 8 and I'm sure there is lots of good stuff coming within the next year
or so.

Re: Kobo on ipad mini

2014-08-05 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Dear Anne,

Thank you for responding. I am really confused in Kobo. I can't even find the
list of my books let alone where to set the page transition. I spent an hour
trying to figure things out but to no avail. I explored the 'settings but
apart from the themes I find nothing to do with reading mode. I'm puzzled why
I can't find the list of my books although I have downloaded them all. I hate
imposing on you like this. Would you have written about this in your earlier
posts to the group? If yes, I will find them in the archive.

Thanks again

Bluetooth between Apex and IPhone

2014-08-05 Thread Gerardo Corripio

 HI guys
I've never in my life worked with Bluetooth before, until awhile ago
today; the paring between my Apex and IPhone 3GS with IOs6.3 went
without a hitch! I was able to work with it great! however subsequent
times, either the two devices aren't found, or when they are, all of a
sudden, I can be Brailling away on my Apex, and the connection loses
itself, with the Apex returning to the Main Menu. The Apex is fine
because it detects my laptop OK, so might the problem be the IPhone
maybe it not being close enough? Thanks for ideas, because as I said
before, I've never worked with Bluetooth before, thus maybe I might be
missing an important tip?

Re: Bluetooth between Apex and IPhone

2014-08-05 Thread Alex Hall
In Keysoft 9.3 and 9.4, I found similar connection problems. Nothing changed
except the Keysoft version, so I have to think it's something Humanware did. Of
course, a newer iOS device is probably what HW will tell you you need, but I
tend to think that's not the case. I can't offer any specific advice on fixing
it, unfortunately, but I can say that you aren't alone. This is just one of the
great many reasons I've given up on Humanware's notetakers altogether.

RE: Bluetooth between Apex and IPhone

2014-08-05 Thread Cristóbal
I tried out a loaner Apex a while back and for the life of me I could not
ever get much less keep it connected via bluetooth. This was with my 4S at
the time. I ended up passing on buying it and instead got myself an iPad and
Brailliant BI instead. Good luck with the Apex. All I know is that my
experience was anything but pleasant.

If it's deleting text, space-d will do it, or the two left thumb keys
. No, backspace will not work; Humanware keeps saying that this is an Apple
limitation, but many other displays use the backspace key just fine. Sorry, I'm
just really not a fan of HW.

RE: Bluetooth between Apex and IPhone

2014-08-05 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hi There,

I just want to chime in about the Apex returning to the main menu in
Keysoft. There are certain keystrokes such as advancing to the next page on
an iOS device with the Apex that if you didn't apply the pass through
keystroke of dots 4-5-6-7 and spacebar, you would get kicked out of using
the Apex with your iDevice. The O chord will open the option menu on the
Apex and that's why a pass through keystroke is vital. Hence, if you were
quick enough, you could go back into the terminal menu on the pain menu and
press enter. Otherwise, one would need to pair the Apex with the phone
again. I sometimes forget about this if I haven't used the Apex with my
phone for a while. HTH.

In Keysoft 9.3 and 9.4, I found similar connection problems. Nothing changed
except the Keysoft version, so I have to think it's something Humanware did.
Of course, a newer iOS device is probably what HW will tell you you need,
but I tend to think that's not the case. I can't offer any specific advice
on fixing it, unfortunately, but I can say that you aren't alone. This is
just one of the great many reasons I've given up on Humanware's notetakers
altogether.

devices aren't found, or when they are, all of a sudden, I can be Brailling
away on my Apex, and the connection loses itself, with the Apex returning to

the problem be the IPhone maybe it not being close enough? Thanks for ideas,
because as I said before, I've never worked with Bluetooth before, thus
maybe I might be missing an important tip?

Baum braille display

2014-08-05 Thread Richard Turner
I saw the Ultra Vario 20 cell braille display today.
The cost is $2395.00 and is made by Baum.
In my opinion, it is one of the best braille displays I've seen.
It has a switch to toggle from display mode to notetaker mode.
In the notetaker mode, it has a word processor that can read the standard text
file types, BRF, TXT, DOC, etc.
What you write in the word processor can be opened on the computer I think as a
TXT file.
It also has a pdf and excel viewer. They plan to add a power point viewer this
fall.
You can have up to 4 bluetooth devices paired at one time. A key combination
toggles through the different bluetooth channels.
It has 32 GB of internal flash, plus can read and save to USB sticks.
It has a key lock switch.
I found the keyboard very comfortable to write on.
It has the standard braille keys and the baum navigation keys, plus a few extra
modifier keys for accessing menus, modes, etc.
There is also a 40 cell model which cells for $3395.00.
The braille felt very sharp and clear to me.
It will start shipping around August 15th.

You can read more about it and find a local dealer at:
http://www.baumusa.com/
If I didn't already have the Braille Edge in my office, I would buy the 20 cell
for its portability and features.

RE: Using dropbox on the iPhone!

2014-08-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Terri,

Yes, you can use Dropbox on your 4S and the app is very accessible. You can
see everything you have in your Dropbox including your folder structure and
files. You can also open most files in the Dropbox app as it has its own
viewer for documents such as Txt, PDF, Word etc. You can also look at
pictures (or show pictures to others) and play audio files.

If you get an email with an attachment on your iOS device you can save the
attachment to any folder in your Dropbox and in the process rename the
attachment to whatever you want to call the file.

If you use Voice Dream Reader Dropbox is one way to get MP3 audio books or
eBooks into Voice Dream Reader. First copy the file (it has to be zipped if
it's a daisy audio book) into one of your Dropbox folders. Then when you
want to add a file in Voice Dream Reader select From Dropbox, find the
file and load it.

One thing to keep in mind is that no files from your Dropbox account are
actually downloaded to your device unless you designate them as a Favorite.
This means that if you need access to files when you don't have a data
connection either via WiFi or 3G (like when you are in Airplane mode, for
example) you have to mark any files you want access to as Favorites before
which then causes them to be physically downloaded to your device. Otherwise
what you see is what is in your Dropbox cloud and it will use WiFi or 3G to
access the files.

Regards,

Subject: Using dropbox on the iPhone!

Hello everyone,
I was wondering, can I use dropbox on my iPhone 4s? If so, how accessible is
the application? How well does it work? What are some things I can do with
this application?
Any advice, hander help would be much appreciated.
Thank you,

Re: Baum braille display

2014-08-05 Thread Gmail
I've been wanting one of these ever since I heard about it. I'd even pick it
over the Braille Edge because there's a smaller model available.

Right now, I have a Brailliant BI 32. I'd like the Vario Ultra for its ability
to take notes independently of an iDevice, without having to worry about the
weird Braille translation errors you come across with iOS Braille translation.
This will also allow me to completely avoid the weird lockup issues with
Braille displays and iDevices.

I don't know if you've ever seen one of the Brailliant displays, but it looks a
lot like a BrailleNote, if you've seen one of those. It has the thumb keys,
slightly-slanted keyboard, etc. Does the Vario look somewhat like this? If
you've seen a Brailliant or a BrailleNote, what are the physicaal d ifferences
between either of those products and the Vario?

Thanks,
Ari

I saw the Ultra Vario 20 cell braille display today.
The cost is $2395.00 and is made by Baum.
In my opinion, it is one of the best braille displays I've seen.
It has a switch to toggle from display mode to notetaker mode.
In the notetaker mode, it has a word processor that can read the standard
text file types, BRF, TXT, DOC, etc.
What you write in the word processor can be opened on the computer I think as
 a TXT file.
It also has a pdf and excel viewer. They plan to add a power point viewer
 this fall.
You can have up to 4 bluetooth devices paired at one time. A key combination
toggles through the different bluetooth channels.
It has 32 GB of internal flash, plus can read and save to USB sticks.
It has a key lock switch.
I found the keyboard very comfortable to write on.
It has the standard braille keys and the baum navigation keys, plus a few
extra modifier keys for accessing menus, modes, etc.
There is also a 40 cell model which cells for $3395.00.
The braille felt very sharp and clear to me.
It will start shipping around August 15th.

You can read more about it and find a local dealer at:
 http://www.baumusa.com/
If I didn't already have the Braille Edge in my office, I would buy the 20
cell for its portability and features.

Re: Bluetooth between Apex and IPhone

2014-08-05 Thread Tom Lange
Hi. Good points, Eileen, though I've rarely had to re-do the pairing between my
iPhone and my Apex. Maybe it's Keysoft 9.4.1 or maybe it's just that I've
beat the hell out of that machine, using it heavily over the last three or four
years and the machine is juit showing its age. Whatever the case, I've found
that the bluetooth implementation on my Apex is really squirrely. Quite often,
the Apex will fail to connect when going into terminal mode, and I've had to go
to Options, then Connectivity and turn off bluetooth and restart it. The Apex
will sometimes say that bluetooth could not be started and I'll have to do yet
another reset. It's a drag, but I've grown used to it, I suppose. When this
old Apex dies, as it most certainly will some day, I'll spring for a Braille
display with a Perkins-style keyboard and forget about note-takers entirely.

 Hi There,

I just want to chime in about the Apex returning to the main menu in Keysoft.
There are certain keystrokes such as advancing to the next page on an iOS
device with the Apex that if you didn’t apply the pass through keystroke of
dots 4-5-6-7 and spacebar, you would get kicked out of using the Apex with
your iDevice. The O chord will open the option menu on the Apex and that’s
why a pass through keystroke is vital. Hence, if you were quick enough, you
could go back into the terminal menu on the pain menu and press enter.
Otherwise, one would need to pair the Apex with the phone again. I sometimes
forget about this if I haven’t used the Apex with my phone for a while. HTH.

In Keysoft 9.3 and 9.4, I found similar connection problems. Nothing changed
except the Keysoft version, so I have to think it's something Humanware did.
Of course, a newer iOS device is probably what HW will tell you you need, but
I tend to think that's not the case. I can't offer any specific advice on
fixing it, unfortunately, but I can say that you aren't alone. This is just

Re: Kobo on ipad mini

2014-08-05 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Andrew,

Kobo is complex to set up and has changed many times in the years I've been
using it.

When you launch Kobo, you should find the Library button at the top left of the
screen, just under the signal strength indicator for your mobile carrier.
Double tap the Library button.
You should find a button labeled Nav Menu icon iPhone. Double tap this and,
sweeping right from the top left, you should find
Home, Library, All, Books, Magazines, Kobo collections and lots more. Double
tap on Books.
Your books should then appear. Double tap on the book you want to read.
Sometimes, you have to do this several times before it works.
With a book open, you need to double tap anywhere on the screen to bring up the
tool bar at the bottom, but with VoiceOver active, you can't access the
Settings screen. You need sighted help to get it set up. The page transition
style you need is Scrolling. After that, a two-finger swipe up the way will
read the whole chapter.

At the end of the chapter, double-tap the link at the bottom right of the
screen to go to the next chapter. A three-finger swipe up will turn the pages
should you be interrupted in the middle of a chapter. It also works well with a
Braille display.

Cheers,

Anne

 Hi,

I've been trying to use Kobo on my ipad mini with no success. I find the
application very confusing. I keep hearing all the time the familiar wizzy

purchased after quite an effort but I have no idea how to start reading it.
Are there any tricks / adjustments I need to make?

 Many thanks for any tips

RE: download link for IOS 7.12 iPhone 5s?

2014-08-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Kliphton,

As Scott pointed out, iTunes should be able to do this, but if you want to
do it manually, go here:

http://IPSWDownloader.com

Keep in mind that in addition to knowing that your iPhone is a 5S, you also
will need to know which model of 5S it is, e.g. A1453, A1457, A1530, A1533.

If you don't know you will have to get a sighted person to check on the back
of your phone where this model number can be found. I believe that even
though there are multiple 5S models, there are only 2 IPSW downloads which
cover these models.

Sieghard

Okay, my phone is in DFU mode, and I need to grab the IOS 7.12 update and
install it manually. Anyone no where I can get it from? I have tried
google, and on there it's all about IOS8 and how to update the beta.
Thanks.

Re: Baum braille display

2014-08-05 Thread Richard Turner
The Vario does not have the thumb keys in the front of the display. The panning
is done with the navigation keys to the right and left of the braille display.
The It has two space bars with a joy stick between them.
It is surprisingly light. The keys are fanned out in such a way that feels more
comfortable to me. It is hard to describe. You'll have to get your hands on it
to see if it meets your needs.

I like it a lot better than either the Braille Note or the Brailliant displays.

Right now, I have a Brailliant BI 32. I'd like the Vario Ultra for its
ability to take notes independently of an iDevice, without having to worry
about the weird Braille translation errors you come across with iOS Braille
translation. This will also allow me to completely avoid the weird lockup
issues with Braille displays and iDevices.

I don't know if you've ever seen one of the Brailliant displays, but it looks
a lot like a BrailleNote, if you've seen one of those. It has the thumb keys,
slightly-slanted keyboard, etc. Does the Vario look somewhat like this? If
you've seen a Brailliant or a BrailleNote, what are the physicaal d
ifferences between either of those products and the Vario?

I saw the Ultra Vario 20 cell braille display today.
The cost is $2395.00 and is made by Baum.
In my opinion, it is one of the best braille displays I've seen.
It has a switch to toggle from display mode to notetaker mode.
In the notetaker mode, it has a word processor that can read the standard
text file types, BRF, TXT, DOC, etc.
What you write in the word processor can be opened on the computer I think
 as a TXT file.

RE: download link for IOS 7.12 iPhone 5s?

2014-08-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi again, Kliphton,

Just out of curiocity, what caused your iPhone to go into DFU mode? Were you
trying to jailbreak and are you sure it’s in DFU mode and not in recovery mode?

Also, I believe Scott is correct in saying that you can restore from iTunes if
your phone is in DFU mode. A manual restore using an IPSW file is of course not
a problem, but I don’t think it’s necessary. Here is a link to an Apple support
thread which seems to also confirm this:

 Hi all

Now I’d happily offer to test this out if someone pays my air fares.

Just sharing FYI as always and apologies for those who see it more than once.

SFO Terminal 2 San Francisco International is about to make life decidedly
easier for blind and visually impaired travelers. The airport has teamed up
with Indoo.rs to unveil a Bluetooth beacon system that will help these
passengers find their way through Terminal 2 using only their phone. When
users walk past one of the 500 transmitters, their devices will announce
nearby points of interest; they can find flight gates, ATMs, information
desks and power outlets without asking for help. An early version of the
necessary app also has a directory for sighted visitors. The guide technology
only works on iOS devices so far, but The Verge understands that it will
eventually support Android-toting guests as well. Indoo.rs expects the
service to be available either late in the third quarter or early in the
 fourth.
