Re: MacBook Pro water damage!!!
I had a similar situation years ago with a MacBook which was covered by my insurance company under household items. The MacBook was replaced under insurance. I got to keep the old one. I let it dry out for a week or two then tried to restart and YES it did. Just needed to dry out! Do you have household insurance ? If not let it dry out maybe with a 'little' assistance. Locate these files com.apple.iPhoto.plist, iPhotoLock.data, iPhoto.ipspot, Library.data, iPhotoMain.db, iPhotoAux.db (iPhoto 8), Database (iPhoto 9) 4. Delete them (copy the files to another location, perhaps your desktop) from the opened “package contents” window 5. Close the “package contents” window 6. Open iPhoto with the option key held down, select your iPhoto Library Hopefully it will open up. === I’ve now added an explanation of what the files do FYI: com.apple.iPhoto.plist This file is actually not written out by iPhoto itself, but rather by iPhoto Library Manager. It is a copy of the preferences file that is associated with this library. iPhoto.ipspot This file is written out by iPhoto and read in by Spotlight in order to index the information about the photos in your photo library. When you switch between different iPhoto libraries, iPhoto Library Manager will swap out this preference file for the existing preferences before opening the library up. Library.data, iPhotoMain.db, iPhotoAux.db (iPhoto 8), Database (iPhoto 9) These files/folders serve as the central database where iPhoto stores your library information. All your event, album, and photo metadata is stored in these files iPhotoLock.data This file is used by iPhoto to help prevent more than one copy of iPhoto from accessing the library at one time. Hi Ronni, Yes, I totally understand that it's so difficult doing remote navigation. I really appreciate your assistance in this and it has certainly turned out to be a strange set of convoluted circumstances. Re: iPhoto library will not load
Hi Ronni, Well . I have done a full restore of the iPhoto library from Time Machine backup and iPhoto still will not open it. I am running iPhoto version 9.1.5. I originally did a 'Migration Assistant' transfer of folders and files from my 3 year old MacBook Pro running OS X 10.5.8 to the new MacBook Pro running OS X 10.6.8. I'm wondering whether there is a compatibility issue with the iPhoto library moved from the older MacBook Pro as iPhoto 9.1.5 will definitely not open the library. There are no such issues with the older MacBook Pro when opening the same iPhoto library using iPhoto version 7.1.5. cheers Douglas Douglas Sheerer Director GALERIE DÜSSELDORF | contemporary art | est.1976 BA Art+Design : Post Grad' Dip Fine Art : MA Art Adjunct Research Fellow: : Department of Art School of Design & Art Curtin University of Technology Western Australia Approved Commonwealth Government Valuer for the Taxation Incentives for the Arts Scheme (TIAS) GALERIE DÜSSELDORF | contemporary art ABN 13 505 972 151 9 Glyde Street Mosman Park, WA 6012 Australia Directors: Magda + Douglas Sheerer Gallery Hours during exhibitions : Wed - Fri 11 - 5 pm Sun 2 - 5 pm Also open by appointment : Closed Public Holidays t/f +61 8 9384 0890 email : g...@galeriedusseldorf.com.au dshee...@westnet.com.au web site : http://www.galeriedusseldorf.com.au/ / \ / \ always more steps to climb On 28/08/2011, at 2:30 PM, Ronda Brown wrote: Hi Douglas, Make sure you “Restore” the iPhoto Library correctly using the ‘working iPhoto Library’ in Time Machine backup. Re: iPhoto library will not load
Thanks Alex for the link. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2638 link I finished up having to do a manual rebuild., and have managed to get images back into iPhoto be it all in the one folder! When I follow up with performing the 'Tip' part, iPhoto wants to import images again as duplicates rather than just the organisational source list?? cheers Douglas Tip: Inside the Originals and Modified folders are subfolders organized by date, and then by "film roll" or event. You can drag these folders one at a time to the iPhoto icon in the Dock to import them and retain this organization in your source list. Additional Information Performing a "Manual rebuild" If the rebuild option in iPhoto does not resolve your issue, you can manually reimport the photos into a new iPhoto library. While holding down the option key on the keyboard, open iPhoto. When prompted, select the option to create a new library. Select a new location for the library, name and save it. Give the new library a different name than the original library to avoid confusion. From the iPhoto menu, choose Hide iPhoto. Locate the original iPhoto Library folder in the Finder. Right-click or control-click the iPhoto library icon and select "Show package contents" from the menu. In the window that appears, you should see two important folders, "Originals" and "Modified". Drag the Originals folder onto the iPhoto icon in your Dock. This imports the original photo files that you imported into the original iPhoto library. You can also drag the Modified folder onto the iPhoto icon in your Dock. This will copy over all edited versions of images you have previously worked on, including those which have been edited automatically (such as auto-rotated images which have been edited and then imported from your camera). Note: Importing both your Modified and Original folders into a new library will result in both the original and edited version of each image, if applicable, showing up in your new iPhoto library. Tip: Inside the Originals and Modified folders are subfolders organized by date, and then by "film roll" or event. You can drag these folders one at a time to the iPhoto icon in the Dock to import them and retain this organization in your source list. Note: The manual rebuild procedure does not preserve metadata such as album names, sorting, or comments. It may also introduce duplicates into the iPhoto library. After importing the photos you may want to reorganize and reedit the contents of your new iPhoto library from within the iPhoto application. If there are photos in the Library, then Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. NOTE: Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back. Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. Re: Transfer/Sync photos from iPhone to iPhoto
Hi Peta, If you have wifi at home then download/install 'WiFi Photo Transfer' (free application) for your iPhone. It will allow you to use your web browser on your Mac to transfer any photo from your iphone camera roll or albums to your desktop Mac. When you launch 'WiFi Photo Transfer' it will bring up a page showing the url you need to enter into your web browser. iPhone 3G 18 months old : GPS has stopped working
My iPhone 3G 16gb (6.6gb available) (18 months old) Version 3.1.3 (7E18) Model MB496X Modem Firmware 05.12.01 : GPS has stopped working Having just the other day purchased Navigon Australian GPS software it is even more annoying:( My Navigon Europe application was working A OK in Europe late last year. GPS Lite MotionX application confirms no or extremely weak signal as does the Navigon GPS application. I've scoured the web for possible solutions to this problem. Quite a few wannabe solutions out there. Navigon web site suggests doing a full 'Erase All Content and Settings' and backup restore to improve GPS signal. eg: What can I do to improve the GPS-Signal of my iPhone? Answer: During the following process the memory of your iPhone will be reorganized. This will have a positive effect on the quality of the GPS-Signal. The internal memory will be entirely deleted during this process. Therefore it is extremely necessary to make a backup of the software as described in step 1. I'm reticent to do the 'Erase All Content and Settings' just yet unless it is the ONLY solution! I've tried the following without success : Have reset the iPhone using power + home buttons held down till apple logo appears. Reset Network settings Reset Location Warnings Tried with 3G on and off Tried with WiFi on and off It seems that only WiFi/3G 'triangulation' is working giving me 'very rough' positioning. PBk 17" won't boot up
I have a Powerbook G4 17" running OS 10.2.6 which refuses to boot up. It starts and then stops and at the same time a black rectangle about 30mm wide by 5mm high appears. It has 2 blue vertical lines and some white spots. The boot up refuses to comtinuer. I have run the Apple hardware tests and all is OK. I have run Diskwarrior 3 and it fixed a few things including a directory wrapper and completed the directory rebuild announcing all OK. The last software installed was the i-sight update. I can boot up from the original install disk but thats an old version of OSX whicj I don't wish to re-install. I tried to boot up with the first of the 2 original OSX 10.2 disks but that doesn't work (I am holding down the C key on boot up) - and I find that really strange. I do have a complete back up of the PBk hardrive as a disk image on an external firwire drive. Before I take it to the Apple centre and probably have to wait a week before they look at it Ideas ?? anyone please thanks Doug Sheerer

Stolen Power Book G3
A dear friend of mine and academic colleague has just been burgled. The thief stole her Powerbook, 2003 model Nikon 5 mega pixel digital camera (no serial number recorded), some CD's and her visual diary. Unfortunately she had her last chapter of her MA Thesis on the Powerbook hard drive and - you guessed it - not backed up! She is desperate to get it back or if that is not possible wishes to replace it with one exactly the same (not keen to go from OS9 to OSX because of software upgrades and learning curve) The theft has been reported to the police and I told her to register the theft with Apple. Details are as follows: Black G3 - 400 mhz power Book purchased in 2001 Serial number QTO483EZK34 (Another number on reciept 065196) It is minus the power supply tel connector Bag: Targus notepack black synthetic bag - black strap - plus sections for CDs etc. Any information please contact me on 0417 926 132 or send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] thanks Doug Sheerer -- Douglas Sheerer Director (B.A. Art + Design, Post Grad Dip Fine Art, Master of Arts, Art - New Media) Adjunct Research Fellow: : Department of Art Faculty of Built Environment, Art and Design Curtin University of Technology Western Australia Galerie Düsseldorf Directors: Magda + Douglas Sheerer 9, Glyde Street, Mosman Park, WA 6012 Australia Gallery Hours during exhibitions : Wednesday - Friday 11 - 5 pm Sunday 2 - 5 pm All other times by appointment Closed Public Holidays telephone/fax +61 8 9384 0890 [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] Visit our Web Site at : http://www.galeriedusseldorf.com.au our exhibitions comprehensively at your fingertips / \ / \ / \ / \ Always more steps to climb IMPORTANT: The contents of this email transmission are confidential and may be protected by professional privilege. Virtula PC 6: Re-assign Drive C: ?
I'm using Virtual PC 6 under OSX 10.2.8. I have two drives configured: Drive C: (with Windows 98 SE installed - total Size 520 mb)) Drive D: (with various software installed - Total size 5 gb) I have run out of space on Drive C: as I originally naively configured it to just 520 mb in size. Can I install Windows 98 SE on Drive D: and then convert that drive to Drive C: ? And if so do I do it from the booted Windows environment or can I do it externally ? I could then dispense with the old virtual Drive C: and have as much extra space as I need. Advice much appreciated. (I know that drives can be configured to expand but I understand this is only possible up to the original size limit fixed on installation) I don't want to have to re-install everything if possible. cheers Doug Sheerer -- Douglas Sheerer Director (B.A. OSX refuses to trash corrupted archives
After downloading some files. Stuffit Expander crashed whilst unzipping a compressed archive. I tried again a further twice to unzip the archive and the same happened. I now have 4 files that the system refuses to trash. Error message as follows: Preparing to move to "trash" ! The item "XXX" is being used by another task right now. Sharing an ADSL >> Ethernet >> Airport Internet Connection with >> Bluetooth equipped PDA t
Sharing an ADSL >> Ethernet >> Airport Internet Connection with >> Bluetooth equipped PDA Has anyone here in Perth managed to do this successfully? I have a Bluetooth equipped Sony Clie TG50, a G4 Powerbook 17" and an Airport extreme base Station on an ethernet ADSL network. I have read and re-read endless internet postings and have tried (without success) to implement various scripts and strategies. USB cradle link Software is available from www.markspace.com/missingsyncinternet.html : namely Missing Sync Internet Sharing AvantGo but all this does is share the internet connection with the PDA via the usb cradle when connected to the mac - hardly the best wireless solution. I have also tried IPNetShareX which gives better control re web sharing - doesn't seem to help either. Here is the very latest low down on how one is supposed to do this. I have done all of this - but still no connection and it's driving me crazy!! Check Bluetooth is turned ON both Mac and Sony Clie TG50 Ensure both devices are paired and recognise each other Disable Palm Hotsync Ensure Internet Sharing is ON Run Script detailed below : Share Airport to Bluetooth Setting up the PDA: 3. In Prefs on your Palm, create a new connection. Call it something like "Bluetooth to Mac", or whatever you like. Set it to: Connect To PC, Via Bluetooth, and select the Mac you paired with as the Device. In "Details", you can set the Speed to 115,200 bps, and Flow Control to Automatic. 4. Last step. Create a new network service in Network prefs on the Palm. Again, call it something like "Bluetooth PPP to Mac". User name and password can be left blank. Choose the connection you created in step 3. In the "Details" section, make sure you have the following settings: Connection Type: PPP, Idle timeout: (up to you -- I use "never"), Query DNS unchecked, DNS addresses: (see below), IP Address: automatic (If you don't already know what your DNS addresses are, there are a couple places you can check. First, look in System Preferences on the Mac, Network panel, TCP/IP tab. There is a box labeled "DNS Servers" which may have the addresses. If the DNS Servers box is empty, and your Mac is connected to the Internet via an Airport base station, try this; open the Airport Admin Utility, click on Configure for your base station (you'll need to know its admin password), then Show All Settings, and go to the Internet Tab. Your DNS settings should be shown in light grey text directly to the right of the input fields labeled "DNS servers". Failing both of the above, open the Terminal application and type: cat /etc/resolv.conf Your DNS server addresses may be listed there, on lines labeled "nameserver". If not, you'll need to ask your Internet service provider.) Terminal Query for nameservers:cat /etc/resolv.conf (hit return) nameserver 203.10.1.17 nameserver 203.10.1.9 nameserver 202.72.191.199 Used DNS settings : 203.10.1.17 203.10.1.9 That should be all the configuration you need to do. Make sure internet sharing is enabled on the Mac by running the appropriate AppleScript from step 1 and entering your administrator password. This script initiaties a PPP server on the Bluetooth port and shares the internet connection from Airport. Courtesy of www.technohappymeal.com do shell script "sudo /usr/sbin/pppd /dev/tty.Bluetooth-PDA-Sync 115200 noauth local passive proxyarp asyncmap 0 silent persist :10.0.1.201 &" with administrator privileges do shell script "sudo /usr/sbin/sysctl -w net.inet.ip.forwarding=1" do shell script "sudo /usr/sbin/natd -same_ports -use_sockets -log -deny_incoming -interface en1" do shell script "sudo /sbin/ipfw add divert natd ip from any to any via en1" Then try using an internet-enabled application on the Palm. It should only take a few seconds to connect to the Mac, and after that you should be on the net! Re: ATO Informed Accounting Software
Does anyone have a copy of the latest Australian Taxation Office CD containing their freely available Informed Desktop E-Forms Accounting software Version 3. (contains Mac/PC) I downloaded this software from the ATO web site - upgraded my system and it is faulty - am now told by the ATO that they agree it is faulty and should have been removed from the download section some time ago - damn typical. (It's still up there freely available today - so that lots of other people can waste excessive amounts of time) Apparently the CD is Ok but the web download version is not. and it will take 2 weeks for the CD to be sent to me from the ATO - great service! Specific Question: Wanted: a foolproof way to mount a disk image of EA Sports F1 Championship CD on the desktop of a OSX G4 Powerbook so that the sim can be accessed quicker and that the actual CD does not have to be present. And Yes I do own the original CD, but I wish to have the sim on the desktop instead of having to cart the CD around in the CD drive. I have done this successfully with XPlane7 but the F1 CD will not allow disk copy to access or copy the invisible file (0001.LT1) although I can see the invisible files with Invisible Finder 2.1. I can't even copy the CD with Toast to keep the original safe. SCSI (MD50) to D-SUB 25 pin Female SCSI adapter cable.
Can anyone help? I have recently bought a USB to SCSI (MD50) adapter in order to primarily utilize my SCSI Epson Filmscan 200, 35mm Scanner on my new 17" Powerbook running OSX. I had to get the USB / SCSI (MD50) adapter from a supplier in NSW as I couldn't find a local supplier. I was hoping also to be able to connect my 2 x 18 gb SCSI external Hard drives which are a mix of as I understand it SCSI I and SCSII types. All were connected to my old G3 MiniTower and worked perfectly. The problem is that I have all the convertor cables for my existing peripherals but don't have the vital one to connect to the (MD50) SCSI end of the USB adapter I purchased. So what I need is a cable which will connect to pinned male MD50 SCSI end of the USB adapter and to the D-SUB 25 pin Female SCSI on the scanner. Sounds confusing ??? Sure is.
