[libreoffice-website] offsite website backup

2011-08-01 Thread Jonathan Aquilina

Hey guys first time posting to this list.

I would like to contribute to this part of the community.

Here is a bit about myself.

I admin 4 linux servers, and am LPIC1 (linux) certified.

Is there an offsite server based outside germany or anywhere else in the
world that hosts a backup of the website in case main server needs to go
down for maintenance it falls over to the backup server?

Where are you located? Country? State?

I do not know about LibreOffice/TDF, but once there are DVD projects
offering ISOs for downloading it would be nice to have mirrors for
these projects outside of Germany. Not to be down about having the
servers in Europe, but I think there need to be mirrors of the site[s]
in North America, South America, and every major region of the globe.

Actually every International organization like LibreOffice/TDF needs
to be regionally mirrored. This could indicate that these regions
support the organization and its software to the point that they want
to make sure their region has access to the main web site even if
something happens to main site's service, or something like that.

I once dealt with an internationally sold product company and they had
their information mirrored in two location other than their
headquarter's facility. I worked for a time in that main computer
center.

There are plenty of mirrors popping up all over the world, but is there
a mirror for the website though? The website is crucial that it doesnt
go down, especially if upgrades to the server the site is currently
hosted on is needed what would the LO/ TDF in general do if the site
went down?

Re: [libreoffice-website] offsite website backup

2011-08-01 Thread Jonathan Aquilina

Hey Christian

I already have a VPS setup which I use and host 4 sites with at the data
center i work with. Here we have redundancy like no other, 4 fiber lines
from 2 different providers, 2 lines each provider. so if something does
go down, we switch to our immediate backup. each floor as well of our DC
has 2 emergency generators in case of electrical outages, and can run
the DC for 6 days.

I am more then willing to run a back up site on my vps. I am sure it
would be much more effective to either have a round robin DNS setup and
use both sites, or use one then change the DNS entry. What do you think.
I could rsync the site on the main server to ensure that its up to date
and a 2nd push of updates to my vps wont be necessary.

Offsite? No. Or depends on how you define it. We got backups and can
set up a replacement rather quickly when the current server goes AWOL,
however all those machines are at the same hosting company, so when
that hosting company exhibits a problem, we're cut for that time.
(pootle-server would be at different location, but we couldn't access
our backups to set up a replacement)

We're currently in the process of defining an automatic fallover.

So again in clear words:
* We have backups, and have servers that can act as a stand in.
* Currently setting up those replacements would be a manual process
(copying from the backups to a replacement machine, and adjusting DNS
entries)
* We are not prepared for the hosting-company to have general network
failures (but they surely will be very fast to solve those anyway)
* Making an automatic fallback is already in the works.

from your other post:

The website is crucial that it doesnt go down, especially if upgrades to the
server the site
is currently hosted on is needed

Oh, the machine has undergone several updates already that demanded a
reboot, but downtimes caued by a reboot are so short, it's not worth
taking action...

what would the LO/ TDF in general do if the site went
down?

choose one of the remaining servers as replacement, play in a current
backup on that server, change DNS entry.

ciao
Christian

Florian that would be interesting read.

I work at a data center and im not sure what we could offer a non profit
organization price wise if you want something in another country for
redundancy. I have an ubuntu 10.04 vps from here and its very high
performing considering i have my business website as well as an audio
stream and 2 other sites on it.

Would you guys consider paying for a vps that you would have full
control over. If so what specs would you want in a vps? a fully
dedicated colocated server would be too costly as we charge per kwH of
electricity.

thanks for that kind offer. However, for achieving a real redundancy,
what we need would be access to servers that are completely under our
control, and that have only the installation we need on it (Ubuntu
base system plus our server components). Given the high load the
machines produce, a virtual machine might not be sufficient.

We are currently internally drafting a document on load balancing and
failover/redundancy. I am happy to share the non-confidential parts on
this list if this is of interest - if you can offer something that
fits to those thoughts, that would of course be appreciated. :-)

However, a simple rsync solution is *not* sufficient, as our system is
more complex.

ok, then I propose a different approach, in order not to rush things.

We start the repository under a different name, like extensions-test

find volunteers, learn the process, and get the repository filled with
files. As soon as things work out, we switch the "non-test" domain

Does that sound senseful?

The reviewer should look about the license and that the project intent

But that is not the task for the reviewer, when he decides if he

Actually, if I got it right when uploading this extension (everything
worked nicely, great!)
http://extensions-test.libreoffice.org/extension-center/italian-dictionary-thesaurus-hyphenation-patterns

the reviewer won't have license information available, since this

has been approved.

So a reviewer must probably decide based on common sense rather than
on the license, and then he must monitor the first releases.

The plan is that we need to find volunteers, and when we can ensure we

just add the reassuring remark that everything worked correctly for me

- Register to the website

Warren camilleri (ossmalta)

Legally you have every right to do so. The best thing would be to sign
up to the marketing list and make contact with the guys who distribute
the North American DVD. They can advise you about all you'd need to
know: what to include, how to stay in compliance with TDF copyright
guidelines, etc.

Well he is "talking" to one - ME.
I am the one who hosts LibreOffice-NA.US, and the one who took the
original German language "beta" distribution DVD and made it work for
the North American Community. With the help of others, we developed
the idea and work to be more than what it originally was.

He is working with TDF people since it looks like he is creating
"mt.libreoffice.org", or one of the sub-domains.

I do not know if he wants to have an online version of the work, as
done with the CMS system, but it is better, in my opinion, to work out
the what you want offline and then do the editing to have an online
version.

I think he wants an English language version, with it also translated
into his regions native language. He also seems to want to have it
Windows-only, with a link to where his users can get Linux and Mac
installs.

I "take my hat off" for anyone who wants to create a native language
distribution, with a different language add with it.

The one thing he did say, I think, was that he would love for it to be
plug-n-play. He wanted you to place the DVD in the drive and it would
ask you if you wanted to install the package or browse the disc. This
type of auto-play has now been disabled on the Windows OS, so that
part is not to be done easy. He is not a programmer, so he would have
difficulties to make it plug-n-play to begin with.

You have your terminology incorrect here, the term is auto play, which
all operating systems do from Linux to windows to mac. i have played
dvd's of games and auto play seems to work none the less. What windows
OS are you talking about. I am on windows 7 ultimate 64bit

Still, he really wants the people in his region to have a distribution
disc in their native language. For that, he is going to do a very
good thing.

My apologies if i came off a bit harsh that wasn't my intention :( as
well i wasn't aware of your given situation :(

---

There is a MS security patch that prevents certain "auto play" options
from happening. This was created to stop those nasties from
"auto-installing" when you insert a CD or DVD into a drive, or the
same with Thumb-drives or camera cards.

I do not know all the ins-and-outs of what the patch does, but it was
meant to stop users from having their computer infected by so nasty
program. I know that it work on XP and Vista systems though. Most of
my driver and software install CDs no longer automatically run after I
place them into the drive.

Music and Video discs are exempt from this security option, but I did
not hear anything about game discs.

I think I remember Drew was one thinking about having a distribution
disc auto-play, or some term describing the following: Place the disc
in the drive, computer reads the disc auto-play file[s], package
determines what OS you have installed, then it asks you if you want to
install the proper package for your system's OS. Windows install
shown for Windows systems, Mac Intel or PPC if it was one of those,
DEB or RPM for the Linux systems. At least that was my opinion on
what he was thinking a few months back. That would be nice for some
people with limited computer skills, but could be a dangerous security
issue for others.

Personally, I would prefer not having a software package "auto play"
when I place the disc into my drive. I may want to browse the disk
instead of installing the default software.

For the "distribution CD/DVD" I like the option to either open the
HTML files in my default browser, OR just browse the disc to see what
all it on it. For those who need help and guidance, having the
install information and what is one the disk, spelled out by using
easy to use browser-based pages is useful. Also for those who know
what is on the disc and just needs to read some documentation file or
install a dictionary or other add-on, having the choice it important.

Re: [libreoffice-website] working on a CD distribution disc for LO

2011-08-28 Thread Jonathan Aquilina
As I work with warren i don't think Linux and Mac should be removed. I
too am a mac user and would be valuable to those who use mac as well. I
don't think we should exclude any platform at all except for now the
mobile platforms like iOS and android.

On 27/08/2011 22:44, webmaster for Kracked Press Productions wrote:

I do not have one for the English language version, since the North
American version on the LibreOfficeBox.org system has not been
generated yet.

Also, do to size limitation on my hosting account, I am not allowed to
have CD or DVD size files stored there.

I wonder how much it would cost, and how quick it would be, to
ship/mail/etc. a DVD in its protective case [not paper sleeve] to your
location from Elmira, NY, USA?

I would love to have you get a copy of our work we did to create a
North American Community DVD.

If I created a bunch of ZIP files that held all of the up-to-date
install and other files on the LibreOffice-NA.US site for 3.3.4, would
you want to download them and put them together into the proper folder
tree? It would take some time to upload them to my hosting account,
due to the slow upload speed of my cable-modem broadband account, but
if you are willing to download them, I am willing to upload them so
you can get them.

It would not take long to remove the Linux and Mac files from
http://libreoffice-na.us/English/index.html [now 3.3.4 installs] to
make it Windows-only. I planned on doing that, but had other things
needed to be done first offline. This version of the site/DVD has the
CMS style of navigation and theme, while
http://libreoffice-na.us/English-Windows/index.html [which is 3.3.3
installs] uses the original style/theme the German language version
used many months ago.

Please let me know what you want to do.

---

Maybe Drew can get the CMS people to generate the DVD ISO for
"testing" now so you could have the option to download that version.
There are some folder/file structure differences between what is on
http://libreoffice-na.us/English/index.html and
http://dvd.north-america.libreofficebox.org/en/ but LibreOffice-NA.US
has been up for longer and has had more time in the editing and
reviewing for errors. Once the new site is finished, the old one may
be used to test different ideas for different version of the NA DVD.

Hi,

yes, that's exactly the idea behind that. In between Christoph offered

that currently imho does not touch the basic idea: we need a flexible
feedback-switch page.
In a first step (for test affairs for feedback from Master) a simple

second step selection "fdo or new assistant?"
third step: Nice feedback page, may be with various selections (Want

Rainer here is just a suggest.

How about linking it directly to Bugzilla. Have it do a search for a
particular issue and list them if found. if not give the option for the

[libreoffice-website] extensions dont have a section for licenses visible on the page

2011-10-07 Thread Jonathan Aquilina
I am looking at
extensions-test.libreoffice.org/extension-center/copy-only-visible-cells.

The issue i see is that there is no section so that the author can state
what license they are licensing the extension under.

This makes it harder to see if the extension is licensed as the TDF
would like them to be

Re: [libreoffice-website] Re: VM migration - anything productive on them?

2011-10-18 Thread Jonathan Aquilina
Why not setup xen. Yes its more work but the advantage of this is you
can set up LVM to allow for the vm's to grow and allocation of disk
space isnt static. one thing that cant be done is shrinking of a vm.

Ubuntu 11.10 has a very easy to use provisioning system as well as web
based vm management and monitoring such as nagios infrastructure monitoring.

Hi,
there is no direct migration path as LXC are "only" containers running
on the host filesystem.
It is also hard to mount the vdi hdd-image, so copying existing
important data should be done using scp/rsync from the old vms to grisu,
where the files can be simply moved to the rootfs directories of the lxc
containers.

Hi Jonathan,

May redirect your question, just a bit.

So, there are really two different levels of interaction here that will
need to be filled by folk - there are site (server) level administrative
tasks and a service level tasks.

The later (service level) tasks will likely be available fully within a
control panel type set of web pages.

The server level tasks however, working directly with the connected
dbms, changing settings/options with php, or image manipulation libs,
etc., will require some different level of access to the actual server
being used.

Sounds to me, from reading your prior emails, that you are interested in
volunteering to be responsible for server level tasks.

Now if I follow correctly from what Florian has said in a few emails one
idea here is that there will be (is?) a vm on the tdf server that can be
used to develop the service - a staging server in other words.

I'm naive as to whether you are already working with the current tdf
admin crew at this level - but either - I would suggest to turn your
question into:

What steps are needed now to get you, and others willing to get this
involved, connected?
- as for first work steps, getting a standard lamp stack setup, I guess.

//drew

Hey Drew thanks for your reply.

I am actually not working with the server admin staff, but would be very
interested. Also I have been discussing on and off via skype with
Florian about options and server side things. Was hoping to have a more
indepth chat with him about it and about how to move forward, but things
came up and he was very busy. I am hoping this week I can discuss this
further with him. As for me getting a LAMP stack installed on linux isnt
a problem neither setting up.

Florian did mention the TDF getting another or some more servers, In all
honesty i would rather test directly on physical hardware if that is
goign to be where the forums eventually get deployed, as all we would
need to do is let everyone know that here is the forums that they can
start being used.

Another thing I have noticed in my experiences in testing on the actual
hardware vs virtual machines, is that issues might arise on physical
hardware and not in a virtual machine and vise versa.

Florian would it be an issue if we tested on physical hardware instead
of a virtual machine for the above mentioned reason of ensuring no
issues arise both in a vm and not physical machine and vice versa?

first of all, thanks for everyone's offer, that's really great to have
such a strong and supportive community! :-)

I myself will not have the time to evaluate forums myself, so what I'd
like to have is a list of forum software with their pros and cons,
plus the names of people who would be willing to 1. install and
upgrade 2. administer them. In the end, we should set-up with a forum
software that has good features plus a lot of supporting administrators.

Ideally, people put it on their webspace to test and evaluate it. We
might also jump in with a VM where people can install software on.
Later on, as proposed, I would move the forum to our productive
servers, freeing the VM again, unless there is a compelling reason not
to do so (I only have limited VMs and IP addresses at the moment, so
if we stay with a VM for practical reasons, we have to do something
with Apache mod_proxy to forward the requests).

Florian

Florian wouldnt it be easier to put it on a testing server which would
be the physical hardware? Also is there a page on the wiki for the above
mentioned points

That's on the agenda, but I doubt that it will happen this year, to be
honest. It's a matter of money and time. But in the long run, more
hardware will be ordered, because it is needed.

No worries Reason i suggested testing on the actual hardware would be to
try and cut down the work then of migrating the forums from the staging
machine to the live server. How time consuming would it be to migrate
from a vm to a live machine once we have finished testing?

honesty i would rather test directly on physical hardware if that is
goign to be where the forums eventually get deployed, as all we would
need to do is let everyone know that here is the forums that they can
start being used.

Why would you want to test on physical hardware directly? Where would
be the difference?

Another thing I have noticed in my experiences in testing on the actual
hardware vs virtual machines, is that issues might arise on physical
hardware and not in a virtual machine and vise versa.

We are just talking about forum software, not rocket science. ;-) So,
I really doubt we'll run into problems here if we test it in a VM.

Agreed. I can confirm though with phpbb that there are no issues on a vm :)

Florian would it be an issue if we tested on physical hardware instead
of a virtual machine for the above mentioned reason of ensuring no
issues arise both in a vm and not physical machine and vice versa?

Yes, it would be, as I don't have any spare server where people can
test software. I can offer a VM, but that's it.

Vm will suffice :D its just taht i have seen some strange os based bugs
surface on vm's that usually dont surface on the actual hardware.

the QA service as SilverStripe page?

It would not be one single page, at least I'd hate to loose the SEO
friendly links to individual questions. So if at all, it would have
its own realm at www.libreoffice.org/askbot/ or something similar.

But then again, the difference between having it an own instance and
linked to the silverstripe site itself is not really that big. Only
thing is having the menu/navigation available.

So the question is more like: is it worth having it somewhere between
the rest of the navigation? What would be the actual benefits?

ciao
Christian

Instead of integrating it with silverstripe why not still use normal
forms and link askbot to the forums so if anyone searches for a question
it lists appropriate forum solutions?

Yeah... Sounds like a pain in the ass...

May I request to try JForum?

EA (Electronic Arts, the game company) uses it, so it cannot be /that/ bad
http://forum.spore.com/ for example:
Our users have posted a total of 3,597,315 messages
We have 84,182 registered users
Most users ever online was 154,829 on 5/6/11 6:28 AM

user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum for comarison:
Total posts 202761
Total members 45746
Most users ever online was 362 on Mon Oct 17, 2011 4:30 pm"

So scalability should not be a problem for us.

Excerpt from its feature's list:
http://jforum.net/features.jsp
* support for postgresql :-)
* SEO friendly URLs - eg
http://forum.spore.com/jforum/posts/list/60904.page (also features a
poll)
* supports caching
* supports attachments
* sticky postings/announcements
* moderation support (can set complete categories/Forums to moderated
(i.e. posts appear only after approval)
* locking of threads
* moving of threads
* read-only&  reply-only forums
* default look similar enough to phpBB (also can migrate phpBB forums)
[]

drawback: no mention of openID or similar.

But just looking at comparisons, and looking at a few with the
postgresql as a hard requirement, jForum would be the first I'd try
(yes, it's java, but so is opengrok - and opengrok just is great :-)

Hi Jonathan, Marc, et al

By default PM's are disabled for the new-registered-users group - of
which Marc is currently a member - you can change this by configuring
group permissions (much much preferred to changing permissions per
user). Also, the platform supports 'roles' and the best practice is to
assign rights to roles and then assign roles to groups - this way, when
there exceptions to be granted they can be done by creating a special
role, change permissions for the new role and then assign that role to
the user account, without changing their group membership.

Also
- I've added you and me into the Admin group, with Alex as the group
lead.

- Also added you into the global moderators group, as the group leader.

//drew

Drew i removed the global permissiosn for newly registered users so
everyoen should be in the registered users group only

There might be the off chance of needing ldap for sso sometime in the future,
a quick google shows that jforum seems to support it.

Ah, JForum supports captchas as well, but the problem with captachs is

Using Captcha alone is just jumping to the spam arms race - you make a
better captcha, they make a better algorithm to decode it..

Email verification for registrations is both an anti-spam feature, and
also ensures that you can communicate status notifications to the user.

[an aside here, it's a good idea also to have a way for users to contact
site admins (or forum admins depending on the package] not only via the
web interface, but via email - but that is a simple detail in any of the
packages, just tossing it out as I think of it]

ReCaptcha is a better choice IMO then Captcha ... but isn't the only one
- having a non-graphical question that changes can be a very good step
also
- using the known spam address services is good, but you can find
yourself dealing with false positive issues - still, I think it's more
then worth the trade off.

I think this is one feature that you will find pretty much a push across
all packages - meaning they all do it reasonably well, and with the arms
race all will need tweaking over time.

Just my .02 on that.

Looks like that call is coming up in just few minutes - catch you all
there..

Does phpBB support subcategories (JForum does not) - and would that be
a solution? I.e. having a list of languages as categories, and each
category having its own set of subcategories, or having a Writer,
category, and the languages as subcategory.
Both just don't sound right, and the only benefit would be to only
have a single database...

But it would make the "show recent/active posts" useless for a
majority of the users, as German users don't care about that a new
article was posted in the English or French forums...

So better to create separate forums? Even have a mix of forum
software? Let NL-project foo use phpBB, and have NL-project bar use
JForum?

Argh - instead of answering questions, the call did bring a much bigger one ;-)

But at least askbot is settled :-)

ciao
Christian

Subcategories are possible. Sitting here I am thinking why not lets say
in each section writer, etc we have a sub section for each language.
Also how many main catagories are goign to be on the forum.

TDF, Writer, Calc, Impress, Base

What others are needed?

Regarding language packs alex is the only one who can upload them to the

Well it seems the welcome messages (e-mail) and the messages we see when
registering are made in European Portuguese (pt), but the majority of users
of LibO are Brazilian (pt-br) so it seems we are seeing something written
by some uptight grandfather ... no errors, just feels ugly. But that is
biased, when a pt speaker reads a pt-br site he feels some uneasiness also.
Just wondering IF it would be possible for a future fix on these

This is a very interesting though. Are we going to open up the existing

It's hard to tell people to use a demo-installation/something where
they cannot expect a real answer and that (because it is a
demo/testing setup), doesn't have the final theming and language
setup... (I'm afraid that people will just vote for phpBB because it
matches the LO theme and not because they like the concept better - if
people prefer phpBB but would like separate forums, this could be done
as well, this after all is the structure that OOo uses)

The NL group leaders (these are the people who are most often seen and
easily identified as the leaders on the respective NL mailing lists) should
be the ones who should be taking this information back to the various NL
groups for discussion and return a summary of the group's decision. There
is also the fact that some NL groups may already have a dedicated forums
hosted outside of the TDF/LibreOffice zone of influence who may prefer to
keep their forums intact and not be included in the list of LibreOffice run
forums.

I wonder if this will also be taken into account or has there been a
decision from the higher ups (BoD) that the official LibreOffice NL forums
will be hosted on the TDF/LibreOffice forums? Unless I am mistaken, this is
the stance that was taken with the mailing lists -- all official
LibreOffice mailing lists are hosted and maintained on LibreOffice servers.
Is this what is being set up? Are we choosing the software (JForum or
phpBBJ based on the assumption that the official LibreOffice forums will
only be run on/by LibreOffice [servers]? If this is the case, then we
should try to send a note to all of the NL groups and wait for feedback. I
someone is to send a note to the NL groups then it should be from someone
from the BoD to make it more of an official request.

Cheers,

Marc

Did you look into the alternatives for the default solution?

http://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/modifications/anti-spam-9/

Something like http://www.peoplesign.com/main/officialDemo.html is
interesting, but not quite the solution if users have certain disabilities.
http://mollom.com/ on the other hand offers a completely automated service
keeping the spammers
out. Unfortunately there's no obvious plugin for phpBB, but there' several
developer libraries available at http://mollom.com/download. As an example
this WordPress driven site http://educoo.no/?page_id=10 (previously also
did Joomla and Drupal for other projects) use it. As you can see there's no
CAPTCHA when you're commenting, but there's no spam either.

Olav

In regards to wordpress captchas there are plugins im using one myself
actually on my site but that is off topic here. Another thing we have to
ensure with the CAPTCHA's is that they are set to the highest level of
complexity possible. this adds another layer of difficulty for those
trying to sign up to spam the forums.

Also we coudl make CAPTCHA's required to post to the forums each new thread.

[libreoffice-website] Nagios Web Admin Interface

2011-12-14 Thread Jonathan Aquilina
I spoke to florian and I was told Nagios infrastructure monitoring was
being setup. Nagiosql is a web based admin panel to setup hosts and
services to monitor. Also to have checks done via snmp the snmp port
needs to be opened on all servers that you want monitored.

If any help is needed please let me know :)

Also Florian I dont know if you want me to setup monitoring on my end in
case the server that the TDF has nagios on goes down you will still get
alerts from my setup.

Hi Jonathan,

Main configuration of the instance (packages needed to be installed,
config files to be updated, username and passwords for the web
interface, etc.) and the specific configuration of the firewall + NRPE
instance for each monitored machine is done automatically via puppet.

Although some basic set of checks have been already configured and
deployed (via puppet) I'm still looking to identify specific
services/resources that need to be monitored on each server and the
appropriate thresholds for "warning" and "critical" status that should
be set for these resources.

If there are specific services running on servers managed by the TDF
admin team and those services/resources need to be monitored, please do
not hesitate to let us know about them so we can take the necessary
action in order to include them in the regular checks done by Nagios.

What you want to monitor is up to the network admins. With nagios thats
the beauty you arent limited to what you can monitor.

Some checks that might be useful would be to

Network traffic: Set critical notification at 80% and 70% for warning.
That way a load balancer can then be setup to balance the load. I think
that is the biggest thing to monitor that I can think of right now.
Hard Disk Space: I would sent the same warnings for this. That way you
will now that TDF servers need more hard drive space and an upgrade is
necessary, or another hard disk.

Ram Usage: Same settings as above as well as same reason.

there are currently no fixed rules. The basic rule, although it sounds
harsh, is: We own the trademark, so better ask us before you register
anything. ;-)

What we did in the past is that many people were so kind to register
domains with LibreOffice or TDF upon our agreement. They either
connected our DNS servers directly, or forwarded to our website, and
agreed to transfer the domain name to TDF upon our request.

For many countries, we cannot directly own the domain name, since you
often need to be a resident of or incorporated in that country to be
eligible for a registration.

We have registered quite a few domain names on our own, but of course
not for all countries.

Hope that helps a bit,
Florian

I think the easiest solution for those domains not being able to be
owned why not point the domains to the TDF name servers and that way the
TDF will have control over the DNS entries even if the domain isnt owned
by the TDF?

owned why not point the domains to the TDF name servers and that way
the TDF will have control over the DNS entries even if the domain
isnt owned by the TDF?

Jonathan Aquilina

Well, someone will have to own them. But having your owned domain
name point to someone else's owned domain, might not be either able to
be done or not quite legal. I know that if I create a domain with my
registration service, they will not let me point it to any domain that
is not my own. [Or not make it easy for someone to do it, since I did
not see how on their site].

Does TDF own a dedicated IP address and DNS server reference IP
address that belongs to them alone? If so, maybe it could happen with
your description.

It seems like the TDF is using name servers provided by the data center
where they rent their servers from. These are the results of an NSLookup
i did on the TDF domain.

thedocumentfoundation.org. 86400 INNSrobotns3.second-ns.com.
thedocumentfoundation.org. 86400 INNSrobotns2.second-ns.de.
thedocumentfoundation.org. 86400 INNSns1.first-ns.de.

I will have to do some more digging when I get back to the USA. I am
curious though if i have a .com.mt domain now if i can have the
registrar where i bought the domain from use different name servers then
they provide. I honestly dont see why it cannot be done so that the TDF
will have control over the DNS entries for a particular country domain.

[libreoffice-website] Status of forums

2012-01-16 Thread Jonathan Aquilina
Hey guys I havent seen any updates regarding forums. I would love to
volunteer to help admin them. Also I would recommend before actually
opening the boards we ensure proper dns black lists are used. As I got
spammed by about 300 spammers on mine and im tediously banning them.
Seems like Captcha isnt enough in regards to phpbb.

thanks for your offer and help! IMHO, Christian and Alex want to
deploy the forums officially soon, and your help would be appreciated.

Christian, Alex, can one of you send a follow-up on where we stand and
which software will be used?

Thanks,
Florian

Was phpbb decided on in conjunction with askbot?

thanks a lot for volunteering! Indeed, the forum, as soon as it is
deployed, can need some moderators, and someone regularly updating it
etc. If you re interested, that would be great.

Florian

For sure I am. in regards to the forums and probably even ask bot if
both of those were decided to be used would work best in a virtual
environment.
