Hmmm... By killing or skipping the "update-binfmts" invocations, I was
finally able to update my system. Part of this update brought in the
2.1.6-1 release of binfmt-support. It now works correctly.
I leave this bug open as it might still bite

After commenting out the call to update-binfmts in my system (that is,
modifying /var/lib/dpkg/info/python3.5-minimal.postinst to skip the
call, even though I am fully aware it is not a recommended way to
solve issues), I saw this same issue happening with
