One of the issues in deciding where to hold a Convention is finding a
city with enough AJL members who are willing to volunteer to put it
together. So far, we seem to find these volunteers around the larger
cities which tend to have more expensive accommodations. Another
consideration is Kashrut. S
Aviva, I think your suggestions concerning changing the venue for the
convention are wonderful! Meeting on a college campus - provided that
arrangements could be made for meals - would bring the convention to
locations which would otherwise be inaccessible to us all. The group is

I am grateful that these sentiments are being expressed. I'm just starting
out my career in librarianship and have to pay for activities such as
conventions on my own. There are a variety of reasons why someone may not
have the funds to attend an AJL conference, and the proverbial ball field
Since we are comparing conference costs here, I thought I'd share my
experience. I regularly attend the Modern Language Association
conference. This organization consists of scholars of literature,
so it's not unrelated to what many in the AJL do. We always have our

to the AJL convention every year I go to CAJE every other year. Not

When I contacted my local Jewish Journal about the post-convention press

I know that AJL has had these discussions many times over the years. I'm
not in a leadership position but have seen repeated discussion of convention
costs in Hasafran. Aviva's suggestions of varying the style and venue of
convention are good ones.

unaffordibility of the annual AJL conventions to the majority
of our membership, raise an issue that has been debated several
times over the years.
The challenge has been discussed at many AJL general business meetings,
