I agree about the options - this is key. The frustrating thing about the
whole sounds bit, is that *if* they are enabled - EVERYONE has to download
them. When I had a server running with sounds - I received sooo many
complaints about this.

Stephen, you're well within your rights to hate the sound features of the
Mani plugin and others... but that's just your opinion. It only applies to
any servers you decide to host on your own.
As I said before... having options is key. I'm glad plugin authors have the

i would just like to chime in a small bit and say how much i have

the sound features are growing out of control with some servers i have
seen having up to >64MB of sound files and Crap music.

Uh oh, time for my two cents ;)
Granted that having a ton of in-game sounds being pushed to your computer
and then having to hear the spam afterwards is annoying. However, the one
thing that Mani does that I 100% support is giving administrators *options*

First of all, i hope, with great hope, that Mani, Beetlefart and other mod
writers would be recieving this list and join in on this discussion about
what to do and what not to do.
It would be great having such a thread about just that, but I am 100% sure
that it would turn out to be another flame

If in fact they're using mani mod, players can type "quake" in-game to disable
the sounds for themselves and it is saved until the server restarts.

Mani has already said that the next release will not have sounds by
default and they will be in MP3 format.
The good news is that you should find that practically all the servers
have the same sounds so once you do one you can go straight into all
of them.

OK, maybe this is offtopic for the list, but maybe its not;
Since yesterday, whenever I tried to join a server I needed to download a
dozen sounds (in .wav format even) which I very much dislike. Even though I
got a 5mbit connection, it takes longer to join a server.
