Don't forget to put the go pedal to the floor and crank until it starts or quits. My 83 240D would start pretty well down to about -10F. That first winter I drove that car we had a week of -20F every frickin night. That was when I figured out that a 400W inverter would power the block heater...

The gauge sender is often glommed up after years of crud in the tank. It’s an easy fix that I’ve written up several times. You can do this with a pair of big channelocks, you don’t have to have a 36mm socket. Here’s the archive of it:

Hard starting could be some tight valves. White/blue smoke is unburned fuel, could be some injectors are still dirty dispite the purge. Drive it for a few weeks with some more Italian tuneups, Techron additive in the fuel. Check the air filter and intake for any mouse nests or general filth etc.
