I was having the /usr/share/backgrounds issue and blank screen issue. I
was able to resolve this on my install by removing
~/.gnome2/backgrounds.xml. Many stale entries in there that weren't
properly removed. I suppose you can hand-edit the file but I'd rather
zap/recreate it.

would get the COMRESET message that everyone else gets, then the
filesystem(ext3) would be automatically remounted as read-only.

I installed systemsettings + kdebase-workspace-bin (for configuring
fonts in kde4 apps), but when I changed fonts, firefox-3.5 uses the kde4
fonts renderer (which doesn't use subpixel rendering) instead of the
gnome renderer.

If Yes/No is a bad idea, then we can use Save/Don't Save. The point here
I think is consistency across the entire applications in default GNOME

Well.. i got a turion on my laptop myself, and the powermanagement does
not work. The fan sounds like a jet engine, and it does not go down. The CPU is
unable to go idle and stuff, which makes it unable to go down in tempratur,
from when the PC is booted it will continue to slowly
i tried in terminal the commands
1. sudo su
2. quanta
and the editor starts. so i think it has to do with the permission
rights?

FYI running with no-kvmclock (as suggested by Anthony in comment 2) also seems
to work around the issue.
Dustin: running guests with clocksource=acpi_pm is also a valid solution
for those who don't want to throw out freqscaling completely (I am one
of those), so I suggest

This sometimes happen when you launch a graphical application with sudo.
You can try to remove .ICEauthority or to give it back the right
permissions:
sudo chown michael: .ICEauthority

Oh, I certainly think consistency is a good idea, I just think it's
_really_ important that the buttons correspond to actions, not answers
to questions.

with KMS enabled and no xorg.conf.

I bet the postgres system user is not in the ssl-cert group any more
for some reason. What's the output of
id postgres
? If ssl-cert is not there, it's a duplicate of bug 382584, but really
I don't have an idea what goes wrong there. When postgres is created, it
is put into ssl-cert.

Did you happen to use the GNOME users and groups tool a lot in the past?
This has been known to cause breakage in the user/group database.
To fix it for you, please do sudo adduser postgres ssl-cert.
