Thanks!!
I was not able to start AWN. After configuring and enabling the
Compositing manager, it worked. However, then my visual Effects stopped
working. I didn't make the connection between the two. I stopped the
compositing manager and now the effects work again.

Because I'm feeling a bit lazy, here are the instructions, but in
reverse.
There are three ways to disable Metacity's compositing manager:
1. (Requires Jaunty, I think) Press Alt-F2 and run (without quotes) "metacity
--no-composite --replace"
2. Click the "Applications" menu, navigate to "System
If I need to revert the command in Terminal what do I have to do?
The command was:
>From a terminal, run (without quotes) "gconftool-2 --set
/apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager --type=bool true"
I found that for some operations I need to revert this command.

I should note that the "Visual Effects" tab is not affected by switching
Metacity's compositing manager on or off, as it is a Compiz-centric
preferences pane.
Also, FWIW, it's called "Avant WIndow Navigator", not "Avant Windows

okay.. that didn't really fix things for me.. well, maybe it fixed about
50% of the problem.
I tried qetuR's method, checked the box, removed my workaround to force-

Had the same problem, and should it not be enough to just try to fix the

If you run Gnome, your default window-manager is Metacity, right? On

It's seems more a drivers/window-manager problem than an Awn problem.
Actually, this warning is a normal behavior of Awn. The goal is to warn
the user that there is a problem in his configuration.

I think it's because the avant-window-navigator start before compiz. I
guess you try to autostart avant-window-navigator. Do you add it
manually or using the option in the manager ?
