Mark Little was the man behind As It Is (and he played a blinding set at
the first ever Radius we did, incidentally) and although As It Is is no
more, he is running a new distribution company called Shady Acorns. The
main stuff he's focusing on is Tony Senghore's various labels: Anonym,
Gung(eligiung), Smuts, Wack!, Disco Duck and so on.

As far as the other old As It Is labels you mentioned go: Bluespirit has
mutated into Bluetrain; Mosaic, Blueprint, Surface and Stimulus are all
still going strong through Ideal; Schatrax is no more (Mark is doing Shady
Acorns and Josh has moved to Barcelona); Cheap Knob Gags is no more
(although Aubrey is considering starting it up again but calling it Silly
Willy Jokes!); not sure about Alien Funk Movement; Solid Groove and
Textures are now going through Intergroove (along with Aub's low-key Super
Disco Fakes label), and I think Virtual Earth has vanished, although the
guys are still active(ish)...

They were one of the best distributors out there a few years ago, doing it
for all the right reasons and putting out a consistent stream of quality
underground techno/house. It's interesting to see where everyone involved
has ended up...

Cheers,

Tom

This reminds me - I picked up a copy of Melody Maker the other
week and I think it was this release (it was definately a Stewart
Walker release) that got an absolute slagging!
It was the first time I'd read MM in a while and it reminded me
just how much they like their music to come from 'proper' bands
with real sell-able faces.
I threw the mag away pretty quick so don't remember details,
but other similar experimental electronic releases seemed to be
coming under heavy fire.
I'll save my money in future and buy a bacon butty or something
instead...

Why "choice words"?

TO paraphrase he said:
' Your set was shit. I like my music deep and dark and your set was neither
of those things. I have some of your records and they are great. But hows of
disco loops just isnt good enough.'

And what *did* he say in response?

He said im sorry you didnt enjoy it.
Someone else made similar disco loop criticisms and his response was i just
wanted to show a different side of my personality.. or something like that.

The truth of it is that his performance wasnt all that flash. Dave tells it
well .. nice introduction and moments of niceness (mostly the few tracks he
played off of his dj-kicks cd) the majority were piss poor disco loops.
Another dissapointment.

(313) Stewart Walker "Stabiles"

1999-09-30 Thread Kent williams
Stewart Walker's "Stabiles" (force inc/mille plateaux/tektite) is a must
have, if you have any interest at all in the dubby, chill end of the
techno spectrum.

The Stabiles, like the sculptures that inspired them, are pieces that
explore balance, tension, and space. At first listen you hear the
repetition indicative of their minimal nature, but as you listen again
the gradual morph and build technique yields a different impression --
one of travel through a large architectural space. The repeating elements
are like columns holding up the roof, and the changing elements are
the shifting context as you walk around the space.

To make more concrete references, Stabiles is inspired by, but does not
imitate, the minimalism of Theorem, the Concept series, and Thomas Brinkmann.
You can hear echos of the Basic Channel sound as well, but Stewart has
constructed something here that stands by itself, and stands up to repeated
listenings. Contemplative, chill, and resolutely minimal.

Definitely a must buy!

Agreed. The Respect nights tend to have quite good music with the
exception of the headliner.

I mean at the previous one, the crowd was eating up the extremely awful
set of Dmitri from Paris, and then left in droves when Theo Parrish came
on. The 70's soul might of been a bit unorthodox, but was much better
then anything Dmitri spun.

Yes, Crspy Bacon came out about hmm 2-3 years ago w/the Mills remix.
Limited 12" I believe. Ach, here we go:

Laurent Garnier-- Crispy Bacon.
A Side: Original Mix
B Side: Jeff Mills Solid Sleep mix
1996 F Communications

The Mills side sounds a bit like his Enforcer Basic Channel o1 remix.

a bit of extra info - sorry if this has already been covered...

from memory, i think there are, as Cim sez, 2 remixes. both are, in essence,
the same track, but
one's got looped vocal snippets in it - "Packet of Peace, Packet of Peace,
Packet of Peace,...",
"End, End, End,..." etc - while the other's missing these.

i'm not sure where the remixes surfaced first - may have been on the original
"Packet of Peace"
12", or on a remix 12", or mebbe on a promo.

so far as i know, the non-vocal snippet remix hasn't appeared on anything else
while the vocal
snippet remix turned up on the b-side to another Lionrock single, i think it
was "She's on the
Train", alongside the Chems remix about 4/5 years ago.

Glenn Underground / A Story of Deepness / Nitelife Collective NLC007

Chicago's Nite Life Collective keeps up its perfect record of fine deep
house releases on this latest album from Glenn Underground. Quite
a range of late night grooves, disco funk, and strong soulful tracks to
be found in the smooth saxxy "Strong Island Jaz" and haunting vocal
"Motherless Child". Other standout picks was the gospel garage hymn
"Solomon's Song", the latin jazz influenced "GU's Fingertips" and
"Come On", and with it's deep disco vocals and keys. All in all a great
release. 4/5

Peace.

I suppose it's best I say this now: there's a possibility I'm talking
through my hat and the guy never said anything to pullen. It was
second hand information (albeit from a reliable source) so as soon
as I see this guy, I'll get all the details! If he didn't, well I guess it's
the stocks for me :)
Also I'm not saying that it was right to go up to him either... but I
can understand it.

Anyway, Alton Miller, GU and Chris Gray, all coming to perth soon.
Should be a summer of house music! :)

Dave

is this one of the original releases or a new "improved" version, a la
jaxx and fly life in it's 20 incarnations?

both red and blue versions were/are like crappy oatmeal imo (=mega
bland).

I bought the blue one for the AUX mix.. which I absolutely love, and ordered
the second one not knowing that I was going to receive a somewhat different
version. I only ordered that for the doubles aspect of the AUX-88 mix...

Why "choice words"?

And what *did* he say in response?

I think that's cruel myself - he is such a sweet sensitive guy! I don't
think he was playing from anywhere but the heart myself.

Peace

(313) Glenn Underground

1999-09-30 Thread Cyclone Wehner
Just got the Ministry of Sound Australian tour press release.

One thing of interest: Glenn Underground playing the Deep Room in Perth on
Saturday 30 October.

No where else, alas.

What is his latest album like, anyone?

Peace

(313) Re: Crispy Bacon

1999-09-30 Thread B Glazier

Just received a copy of 'Crispy Bacon' by Laurent Garnier on F-Com.

The first version I received had an Aux-88 (313 rel.) remix plus a DJ Gilb'r
drum'n'bass mix, plus another track, 'Orgasm'.

The copy which I received today has the original version, plus the
aforementioned remixes, and has 'The Hoe' in place of 'Orgasm'.

I remember reading a Laurent Garnier interview in Jockey Slut quite a while
back in which he stated that Jeff Mills had done some work with him or even
sat in on the recording session - possibly throwing down a mix of one of
these cuts.

Anyone with greater knowledge on this one?
