Re: [313] Let's Talk Techno
It's a good thing you're not a reviews editor! ;) LOL!!! Yes, I am sure the artists will agree... The thing is, I really think art as a whole has been nearly killed be insistent acts of symbolic reference and foggy at best reviews. So busy are both the artists and pseudo-intellects with the academics of it all; who surround themselves with method and meaning so that the raw beauty becomes totally lost... And when all this symbolic interpretation gets forced on something as undefined as techno, well, the magic is rarely recognized, to say the least... I really feel that this is all new, thus requiring a new way of viewing... darw_n create, demonstrate, toneshift... http://www.mp3.com/darw_n http://www.sphereproductions.com/topic/Darwin.html http://www.mannequinodd.com

Mark Ambrose
Anyone have any thoughts on the work/DJing of Mark Ambrose from the UK. He had a track remixed by Blake Baxter, Bellinringers 1, and has been called the New Red Planet by one of the UK magazines a while back. Peace C

And Juans best record, I think, is The Infiniti Collection, but when you judge that record against what UR, Carl, Mark and Tom, B12, the Orb, et al. I dont think it is as strong. When I first heard Model 500 (Sonic Sunset), I immediately thought of early Cabaret Voltaire (Red Mecca, 2x45, Voice of America, 3 Mantras, etc). 'Deep Space' and Infiniti too, though to different degrees. I'd never compare Atkins to the Orb any more than I'd compare Cabaret Voltaire to Pink Floyd. The music of the artists you mention above, to my ears at least, are coming from a very different place. --== Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ ==-- Before you buy.

Technotourist/Groundzero
Make sure you check out the releases from these two new labels. Run by 313s own Otto Koppius (who by now has probably met everyone on this list - twice :), the first two releases on this label are great debuts. from the Clone mailinglist: Technotourist 001 (TT001) The Technotourists - Follow the beat The Technotourist 12 is on more of a pure, classical Detroit tip - lots of square-wave bass and some smooth chords. Also features my favourite TV99AD track - great to hear this finally on vinyl. If you like the more listenable (rather than DJ friendly) sound (ie. old B12 etc.), this is a fantastic, classic sounding 12. Groundzero 001 (GZ 001) The Moderator - In transit The Clone mailout compares it to Rob Hood but this had more of a Red Planet vibe going on for me on one or two tracks. More pumping than the Technotourist release - still with a smooth edge yet enough rhythms to place it nicely in a DJ set. Has that kind of timeless mid-90s techno sound I like. yeah, you got the white label version of Trelik14. a very nice track from Baby Ford and Eon. but the white lable thats got me all hot and bothered is the new Purveyors of Fine Funk Insound E.P. on Residual (REZ-008). Four funky slamming tracks of Disco/Filter/Hard/Techno House from Dan Curtain makes me Curtain a fan all over again! Some of his recent work was a bit too abstract for my tastes but this record returns him to the dancefloor in a very powerful way! Magic Feet announcement
It is my sad duty to inform any ex-readers of Magic Feet magazine of the death of one of its former contributors, Marc Barlow. Known as Wilf to his friends, he wrote under the name of Vilf in Magic Feet for several years. Wilf, 33, was walking home alone when he was attacked by three men in a street near to his flat in Nottingham in the early hours of Monday 21st August. He never regained consciousness and died in hospital a few hours later. A memorial site has been established at www.geocities.com/marcbarlowuk through which anyone who wishes to do so may send a message of condolence to Wilf's parents or pay tribute to Wilf. A full scale investigation by Nottinghamshire Police's Serious Crimes Unit is underway and news of all substantiated developments will be posted to the site. A memorial club night will be held at The Skyy Club, Nottingham this Saturday (23rd Sept). All welcome. Although Wilf was not a member of this list, he was one of us all the same. The following text is adapted from an obituary which appears in the new issue of Overload magazine (issue 04), just out. Thankyou for your time, TOM - Obituary: Marc 'Wilf' Barlow A longtime background figure on the Nottingham underground music scene, Wilf had DJed for years without a break or recognition, always playing only the deepest sounds. He never read the music press or worried about who or what music was 'in' or 'out', he just bought records if he liked them. Needless to say, he was well known to - and liked by - the staff of Nottingham's record shops. His tastes ran deep and wide - from punk and grunge to jazz, funk, dub and soul in equal measure - but techno and house were his overriding passions, with UR, Moodymann, Derrick Carter, Stacey Pullen and Carl Craig amongst his favourites. That said, he was no slavish follower - if he didn't dig a record, he wouldn't buy it or play it, never mind who had made it. He had an unmatched ear for the music and over more than a decade of buying music he amassed a record collection that would make anyone reading on this list weep with envy. I always remember playing him a track off some album a couple of years back without telling him who made it - it took him about about eight beats to correctly identify its creator. For Magic Feet, Wilf mainly wrote single and album reviews, although he also contributed a D Knox interview and some satirical pieces. He couldn't use a keyboard, spell or punctuate, but he often found things to say about the music which would never have occurred to me in a million years and I remain convinced that he could connect to techno and house in a way that very few others could. He also contributed to a now-defunct local listings magazine, Pulse, for who he wrote reviews and interviewed Surgeon. His relish for clubs was also unlike that of few other people I know. If Stacey Pullen, Derrick May or someone similar was in town, he'd be there and any Nottingham clubbers reading may well remember him for his trademark full-length bright yellow workman's jacket. In the early nineties he helped run what became Nottingham's longest-running underground house and techno night, Torch, which played host to the likes of Colin Faver and Luke Slater. Over the subsequent years he regularly helped to try and get more nights going here and when Magic Feet was running its own club sessions a year or two back, Wilf could always be relied on for help well beyond the call of duty. He also went to almost every Lost night - even if no-one else he knew was going, he'd just jump on a bus and go on his own. Recently he had helped launch a Sunday afternoon session called Quit Jivin at a local pub, The Arboretum, where he played soul, funk and jazz-related music. He was enthusing about his hopes for this when I saw him for the last time, on the day of his murder. An intelligent and sensitive man who read a great deal and didn't own a TV, Wilf worked full-time on a production line in the local Pork Farms factory, where he was also a trade union representative and intended to stand as shop steward. A more unpleasant job it is hard to imagine, particularly for a vegetarian, but I suspect that to Wilf, it was little more than a device which allowed him to pay the rent and buy records. To those who knew Wilf, he was truly one of a kind and will be an irreplaceable loss. He is survived by both his parents, to whom we offer our deepest condolences. - Tom Magic Feet Marc 'Wilf' Barlow, factory worker, DJ and writer, born 26th October 1966; died 21st August 2000

Re: [313] Mark Ambrose
We had Ambrose come through town once about a year and a half back, his spinning is much like Terry Francis, deep, spacey, subtle eqing. As for his productions I prefer the early stuff he did on Offshoot and Crayon, his newer stuff (much in the same vien as Steve O'Sullivan) has just become slow and loopy, with short high frequency stabs, and conga's, kinda spacey, but all too familiar once you've heard his other records. If I had to pick a Ambrose record it would be Skymaster: Photon Beams: offshoot. Cyclone: Anyone have any thoughts on the work/DJing of Mark Ambrose from the UK. He had a track remixed by Blake Baxter, Bellinringers 1, and has been called the New Red Planet by one of the UK magazines a while back. I've been a fan of Mark's work for a while, although I have to admit I haven't bought anything of his for a few months. He runs his own label, Crayon, who must be up to at least the mid-teens in the release schedule by now. He's also recorded for the (now-defunct?) Offshoot label as Skymaster, and for Force Inc as Bellringers. There have also been various releases on other labels like Aubrey's Solid Groove, Minifunk in Spain etc etc. My favourite track of his is called 'The Corona', on a 12 called 'Cosmosdwellers' on Solid Groove (the other side is Aubrey's equally awesome 'Swirls') - a long, building, deceptively simple techno cut based around a simple analogue bassline with layer upon layer of swirling strings and heavily-effected percussion drifting around - mesmerising stuff. I can see where the Red Planet comparisons come from although his sound is quite different in a lot of ways. Not everything he does is amazing, but the good stuff is very good. Must try and catch up with what he's been doing lately... Cheers, Tom
Re: [313] Le Car - Autiobiography....??
Saw this one on the new-release lists and was wondering if anyone out there has had a chance to check it out yet. It says 23 tracks according to the Bent Crayon list and I was wondering if anyone know if it was mixed/unmixed or had opinions on the music? Peter, This is an EXCELLENT unmixed collection and a great catch-up if you weren't buying each one as it came out. And even if you were, this is great collection to have all in one place. There are also some various untitled bits full tracks exclusive to the CD release. If you are into their overtly synthetic sound, if you like cybotron, Telex, I-f, gary numan, dopplereffekt, ultravoxx, kraftwerk, early Human League, more detached (yet funky) electronics with a great flair for new wave, this is an essential CD. I was playing selections from this on my radio show this summer and always got calls asking who it was and how they could get it. Even those not into more straight 4/4 techno seem to be interested in it. It's definitely a unique twist on where detroit meets new wave, I think their tag line describes it quite well: the forgotten sounds of tomorrow. peace -- Matt MacQueen [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.reverbmag.com archived radio shows -- http://macqueen.com/radio
Immigrant
Hey all, just wondering if anyone can recommend any labels are are similar in style to Immigrant and Intrinsic Design. Both seem to be on the techier side of the 'tech-house' genre and really hit home for me. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance MM _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Re: [313] Let's Talk Techno
What do u mean by truly innovative. I think that there is nothing in between something that is innovative and something that is not. Innovative is just making changes in anything established. So i cant see why Carl Craig isn't innovative, u just have to listen to Innerzone orchestra Programmed. Goldie and much of the drum 'n' bass contingent reckon he's innovative, too - remember Bug In The Bassbin? i might be going on a limb here.. when i first heard of innerzone orchestra, i thought to myself, 'ok, it's carl craig, trying to do some free-formish electronic jazz oriented music.. i need to get this..' being a HUGE fan of tortoise and isotope 217, both from chicago, i figured that innerzone orchestra was just what i needed.. i find much of the innerzone orchestra material to be boring and repetitive.. isotope 217 especially, [tortoise not so much because they aren't as electronically based, except for the phenomenal remixes cd] blows carl craig out of the water when it comes to the jazz/electronic fusion idea.. this thought was even shared by a close friend of mine who was into craig many years before i was, and who is also a big tortoise/isotope 217 fan.. call us northern michigan kids crazy, if you will.. carl craig hasn't ever really done all that much for me, anyway.. but what do i know.. i've only been into the detroit techno scene for a year.. ;) - sarah _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Re: [313] Mark Ambrose
his double pack skyline (minifunk)--with the image from metropolis on the cover--has one absolutely slamming track, 'cosmic' (skymaster remix). up there with carl craig's remix of altered states for energy level. james Cyclone Wehner [EMAIL PROTECTED] on 09/19/2000 08:28:22 PM To: 313 Detroit 313@hyperreal.org cc:(bcc: James Bucknell/Magazines/Hearst) Subject: [313] Mark Ambrose Anyone have any thoughts on the work/DJing of Mark Ambrose from the UK. Also features my favourite TV99AD track - great to hear this finally on vinyl. If you like the more listenable (rather than DJ friendly) sound (ie. old B12 etc.), this is a fantastic, classic sounding 12. yeah, despite the best efforts of the postman to knacker it (is it me, or should vinyl not be bent double so it can fit thru a letterbox?) i really love this 12. the 2 tracks on side A (by KJ i think) are in that classic funky smooth Detroit vein that many of us know and love. kinda similar in feel to much of John Tejada's stuff (look out for new Tejada material on de:Focus btw - quality assured!). the 2 tracks on side B by TV-99-AD are again in that classic Dutch Detroit style. both have a wonderfully languid melancholic vibe. the first track, Tenth, is def one of my favorite tracks and as Cim says it's great to hear it on vinyl at last (sorry Hans lowers head in shame), and with a great cut by Ron Murphy too. Track A1 is from some friends who recorded for eevolute under the name of East Island, A2 is from the Moderator. I really do like the A1 track, really funky techno and i think that 'koffie is a DJ' is one of the coolest titles for a techno track, but i think you must understand a bit of dutch before you understand why :) For Simon: Both EP's (Technotourist and Groundzero) will de released somewhere next week. -- [EMAIL PROTECTED]

M3 has had about 8 releases I guess? With a good roster of artists such as Rick Wade, Alton Miller, Da Sampla (aka - Shake), etc. More on the detroit-flavored house tip, mixes well with other labels like Elevate, Moods Grooves, KDJ, Sound Signature, some of the better Intangible Records stuff, etc. cheers -- Matt MacQueen [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.reverbmag.com archived radio shows -- http://macqueen.com/radio
