Detroit Techno
Hey what's up? I just have a simple question for the people who live in Detroit. I have been listening to techno for about 5 yearsand for the past 2 years have been going to those so called RAVES (to see DJs I like)and would like to know what the parties where like back when they started in DetroitNow I just see kids dressed up in plastic beads and glow-sticks everywhereIt really pisses me off when people don't know who the true great Detroit DJ/producers are as they tell me Anabolic Frolic is the best DJ in the world (he spins happy hard-core). So please E-mail me privately with your answer. PEACE J. Benjamin Searle 313 Techno Hooded Sweatshirts ~~~ www.313.4mg.com

Re: [313] tonight? Motor, Bill VanLoo ect...
I caught a bit of Clark's set in the beginning of the evening, and he played some excellent cuts, that one really great Norken cut off Soulstatic Bureau comes to mind most readily. Yes, Clark played some great stuff, as always. I think in 10 years people in Detroit are going to look back realize just how influential Clark's DJing has been on a lot of people (especially other DJs). I certainly number myself among those touched by his good taste. Bill Vanloo played the first live set of the evening, and frankly, he played the only one that mattered. Geez, Mike, I gotta remember to put you on the guest list more often ;-) Thanks for the kind words - I really appreciate it. To answer Jeff Richards' question: Does Bill have any demo's available...maybe a CD...promo stuff? I don't have anything publicly available on CD or vinyl yet. I do have MP3s from my live set at DEMF available at my website: http://www.chromedecay.org I'm hoping to get studio recordings of a couple more tracks done in early January then start shopping that around as a demo. Also, I've completed a record for Dale's THX series - you can hear the live version of that track as the last MP3 on my site. As for Dale, here's to hoping the gods of the live PA smile upon him soon. The people who were at Motor on Wednesday probably have no idea just how hard this guy worked to bring them the 20-25 mintues of his music that he was able to perform. I was holding his sampler's hard in the air for 5 minutes or so while he installed extra RAM in the borrowed S5000 he finally obtained for the evening, and he played with no soundcheck or proper set-up. I think if he had been able to play the full set, people would have really gotten a chance to hear some good stuff - Dale's live set has been faster and a bit noisier than his recorded stuff. I think his next set of tracks are going to be ones to keep an eye on... Anyway, Wednesday was a fun night for me - thanks to all who showed up. I'll try to reciprocate by getting my butt in the studio finally getting some more stuff recorded :) Cheers, Bill -- http://www.chromedecay.org
Re: [313] Detroit techno was techno.
[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: techno and house was (nearly) the same thing, Yeah but they were differant. I don't buy the argument that house and techno were the same thing because people would call Nude Photo , Off To Battle and No UFOs DETROIT TECHNO. Detroit techno had its own characteristic sound even though it used some of the same elements of Chicago house. Inner City was vocal house but it had a distinct Detroit techno quality that distinguished it from Jersey garage or Chicago house. i`ve got a question for all who like playing genre-defining games: what`s up with blake baxters when we used to play (co-produced by Kevin Saunderson) on KMS (a detroit record ofcourse)? house or techno? That was called Detroit techno, in fact I remember people in the late 80's associated labels like Transmat, KMS, Metroplex with Detroit techno. If you want the definitive old school Detroit techno sound listen to Juan's' Techno Music from Techno! The Sound Of Detroit compilation. stephen.

Re: [313] Chuck Gibson
I believe Chuck does the layout of the sleeves for UR. Abdul is UR's artist, responsible for most of their label designs... notably: Vintage Future ep, original Jagaur ep and a whole bag of others. Re: [313] Detroit techno isn't techno?
Christian Smith ought to read Dan's book. Chicago house and Detroit techno were well intertwined in their development, but no way is Detroit techno just an offshoot of house, nor was Chicago unaffected by those early Detroit tracks. Nowadays I think of them as co-evolutionary. One factor that is overlooked is that mix shows had a big impact in both cities, but they functioned somewhat differently. Everyone wants a single source for everything in their origin myths. Here's a classic example of why things don't go that simply. phred
Re: [313] Re: no subject
What's curious about this notion of Early Techno (giving it the proper museum label) being just basically house is that there were really two things going on in 1988-92 in Detroit (OK, *three* things including the MI but there aren't any tapes of that that I know of!). One was a series of commercial remixes by Nu Juan and Kevin and some others that fit in with the club-friendly Big Fun/ Good Life kind of sound. I really love these tracks because the production is good, the tunes are well above average and you have nice touches like Juan's distinctive basslines. And I would hope that these paid pretty well, which was a factor during the time when the majors were trying to assimilate the more innovative stuff. But that was also the period when Detroit techno as we know it now was born, with both the 'first' and 'second wave' producers putting out a wide range of really creative stuff. You have KMS' more abstract/harder ones, the development of what became UR, and so on. All this is on a separate track from the remix material. I think Kevin Saunderson's history during this time is the most interesting because he produced both fantastic house tracks and those seminal dark techno ones. phred
313 in London
Saw DJ Assault at Fabric (new superclub in east London) last night. I missed the Pubahs because of the ridiculous queue outside in 26 degree weather, about 50 of us waited for nearly 45 minutes to get in. Assault was good, but seemed fairly upset which usually (from personal experience) means monitor or turntable problems. He was in 'Room 2' which is a fairly big one (maybe 40x60) up on a stage. And when I say 'up on a stage' every DJ will groan, because that means you are playing on top of a big springy drum. It looked like the turntables had no particular padding underneath. Anyway, lots of really fast tracks and plenty of good mixing, but you could practically predict the crowd yells everytime he did some scratching, even when it was fairly perfunctory, and no reaction when he spun a record out perfectly or did other Assault-style wonders. Not sure where I'll be tonight, Stacey Pullen is at the same Fabric tonight (in the big room, though, I believe), but I don't think I want to deal with the weekend masses again... phred
Re: [313] john howard
I know John Howard pretty well. He normally plays very jazzy house, pretty swinging stuff. John has also been sometime columnist for XLR8R magazine. phred

You got a F*king point here I cannot understand (:) why They f*cking promotors put Dj's up there It's very very bad for the sound and does weird things while mixing. Back in the days promotors use to do really weird stuff here in holland (really weird fireworks, ben Hur like entrance for Dj's :))) and stuff like that n.p. Yeah. Some of the real old school house has a synthetic Kraftwerk-y sound to it that very much reflects the same influences that informed Detroit techno. And remember that the Bellville kids were driving over to Chicago to go clubbing and buy records with some frequency. I guess the best way to put it is that people who are into the music will go for anything that kicks. And there is plenty of house music in Detroit -- Check TP, check the Atlanta-era records on Acacia, Moodyman? I think it's really incorrect to talk about being a Detroit Techno Purist. Techno has always been about throwing many different spices in the pot.
