Christian Smith ought to read Dan's book. Chicago house and Detroit techno were well intertwined in their development, but no way is Detroit techno just an offshoot of house, nor was Chicago unaffected by those early Detroit tracks. Nowadays I think of them as co-evolutionary. One factor that is overlooked is that mix shows had a big impact in both cities, but they functioned somewhat differently.
