RE: [313] Alton Miller In Perth
Here's what it says about Alton Miller... Alton Miller did not attract a huge crowd at any time during his set of three hours. Was this due to his name being relatively unknown? In any case, he played a variety of music, from flowing groovy house to breaks to harder tech-house. Added comments: he is known, it's just that it wasn't pushed in a big way and to the right crowd (due the late addition??) and he needs to play East Coast (ie Melbourne Sydney) too to get that love. The house/deep house/tech-house scene is really blowing up here now. I saw Alton play NYE. It was a bit weird in that there must have been around 10,000 people at this gig - 4 floors of tunes: 1) trance/hard house and breaks, 2) techno, 3) house, 4) drum n bass - Perusing each of the floors, it quickly became apparent what the people were here for: trance, followed by techno and drum 'n bass. The house room was next to empty when we arrived (just before midnight), but after spending a couple of minutes in the other rooms we were more than happy to relax in the space and enjoy some quality music. Alton came on around 12:30 and although a few more people got on the dancefloor, the crowd remained very sparse. In a word, his set was funky. Lots of smooth, deep house, some vocals, some groovy breaks and some classic disco stuff. The DJ booth was very close to the dancefloor which allowed those of us on there to really feel Alton's vibe which was very relaxed - dancing, clapping hands, big smile. I thoroughly enjoyed his set as did the handful of others on and around the dancefloor. Now as to why there was hardly anyone there in the house room to see Alton. He was a late inclusion on the bill, but I can honestly say this has little or nothing to do with it. Cyclone's right, the whole gig wasn't pushed to the sort of crowd who would normally go and see Alton play. I mean tickets were around $100 each for 10 - 15 international DJs, but when there's only one out of that bunch that you know you'll enjoy, what's the point? This would be a good time to say I won free tickets to this, and wouldn't have gone otherwise ;-) Respect, and a belated happy new year to one and all 313'ers. JasonB

I've done a grip of live shows with a laptop and they've all gone off without a hitch, but I do use a PC (which would imply less stability unless you're using an old Mac OS)... I've also seen a lot of people use Macs live (running Max/MSP or Reaktor usually). Just do a few practice sets at home to make sure you're comfortable with the software and don't think it will crash if you run it for an hour+ straight. -- :: atomly :: [EMAIL PROTECTED] | [EMAIL PROTECTED] | [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.atomly.com | http://www.mp3.com/atomly

Practice recovering your set from a sudden crash as quickly as possible (get someone to reset your machine while you are playing and see how you deal). Where have the mighty 'spotters gone? (was Happy Records ID)
Surely somebody can answer this, or have a suggestion? 'Tis driving me mad that I can't remember the vocal line that would give it away. I'll put it another way, what are your favourite tracks on Happy? Or, to be even more general, Mad Mike produced House tracks? Or, hypothetically, what do you reckon Stacey Pullen's favourite Mad Mike produced house track is? And seeing as I remember it really well from before, it might be on a mix that is available either on the net or on CD. I am pretty sure it was on Happy, as it looked like that logo from afar, but I'm not 100% sure. It isn't Yolanda's Children of the world; Happy Trax I or IV or Unit 2's Sunshine. Go on, you can do it guys and girls... Jonny. The guy after Kenny Dixon Jr. at the Transit NYE party played a track on Happy Records (I think, judging from the label) that I have heard before and loved. I have now forgotten the vocal line which would give away the name but I am sure I have heard Stacey Pullen play it before. It's exactly the kind of track he was playing aroun 96/97. Any ideas at all? I know what it isn't on Happy, by what I have: Unit 2 Sunshine, Yolanda's Children of the world, Volume 4 are all I can think of that I have actually, but there is 1 more... I can't find any discography for the label, though, which would help.

okay, so perhaps the only that understood me on that was myself. I'll give Jochem two bonus points for humor. To be more clear and to go into depth a bit... I thought the casting for this movie was well done. Though it was bumper to bumper celebrities, IMO they were each placed in roles that suited and challenged them. (Thanks Diana for giving me a window) About a month ago, perhaps talking about the Juan Atkins is on crack bullshit rumor, I think I posted something to the effect that I didn't think that drugs should be associated either implicitly or explicitly with the dance music scene. I didn't address their disagreements, because looking at the message I'd originally sent, I sounded like an old fuddy-duddy. Like somebody's daddy. The other scene deals with ecstasy and other substances. I've only attended the former functionsnever the latter. For me, the music was all I needed to get high. I saw a behind the scenes thing on TV last night. Apparently, the writer, and Steven Soderbergh were trying to provide an interesting template on which to formulate your own opinions about drugs, etc. Personally, I think the drugs discussion doesn't yield many good results on this list, as everyone already has their own opinions and/or habits. Maybe we should all just see Traffic and make/keep our own opinions. Personally, I can't wait. It looks phenomenal and Soderbergh is a master craftsman. Tristan --- Jorge Velez [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: i think in the past people used to go out to listen to music and perhaps to take some drugs. today, many of my generation go out to take drugs and perhaps to listen to some music. peter A valid point. I also, going back to Lester's question, think the particular drugs that are used owe more to an age difference. The few places I go to here in NY - mainly deep/tracky house nights - cater to an older crowd (late 20's to mid-30's) who prefer drinking or toking than being off their heads on E or K. I also don't see anyone crashed out in front of the speakers on these nights, whereas it's still a common sight at some of the bigger techno nights. Though that seems to be changing, too (for the better). E in NY at the moment appears to be more the party drug of choice for those who didn't grow up in / with dance culture. I know less and less people who grew up with this culture who continue to use it.
