man...I am getting so tired of this crap...people need to get over their elitist complexes...I use vinyl, I will always use vinyl, I -prefer- vinyl to other mediums, I have used cd decks along with vinyl in sets, if I wanted to do a cd set I would...it doesn't matter what you use as long as you get the job done...if the crowd was jumpin' when you did your thing, then you did it right, and that should be the end of the story, no one is better then anyone else for any damn reason, everything has it's own difficulty, everyone should just accept that and look for the finished piece of "art" the performer is putting forth, not how he does it, the end product is what matters... josh23 --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > > ill go up next to anyone with these cd inventions > and well play out the real issue-who got the crowd > groovin, whos having a good time. you just have to > buy the plane ticket:> > > you'll go up against hawtin and acquaviva and their > "cd inventions?" > > sounds good, I'm sure it'll be the end-all, be-all > litmus test of which is > the superior medium. > > chris > > > - > To unsubscribe, e-mail: > [EMAIL PROTECTED] > For additional commands, e-mail: > [EMAIL PROTECTED] > __ Do You Yahoo!? we just threw a house party for all our friends and i caught a conversation that i always find enertaining. i was hooking up the tape deck and while i was down there attatching rca cables i was listening in on a guy who who goes to school w/ me who is a cd dj at a goth club downtown explain to his girlfriend how much more difficult it is to dj with cds and how records really suck because they skip and have pitch control problems and some other technical justifications that i didnt understand. she asked him if that was why he wasnt djing. he said well, you know, i guess im just not cool enough to play with this crowd, besides, i wasnt invited. actually, he wasnt with djing dae + me because i would never spend some of the most enjoyable hours of my week with someone who thinks like a football player. weve been doing house parties for friends for too long and have spent too much time together for that. he is missing the point of a house party, or any party. so we were using an amp w/ a blown channel. everyone WAS having fun. i dont see him out there throwing parties, or having a good time. this is where i see the "argument". some people are out there bangin records and having a good time while others are out on a playing field trying to come out with a victory. theres too much stress in living for me to carry that into djing. its not about not the choice of equipment or method of madness. sonic excellence is a luxury, thats all. ill go up next to anyone with these cd inventions and well play out the real issue-who got the crowd groovin, whos having a good time. you just have to buy the plane ticket:>

The 1/8" mini-TRS plugin is woefully inadequate for getting decent fidelity out of a recording. Now it might be interesting for the noise and other artefacts it brings to the sound of a recording, but not as a transparent recording device. There's no reason to make me pay for that audio in and I think a lot of folks felt the same way. Most of the "laptop techno" producers I've seen perform use either a totally software-based sound source or they use some sort of RME Hammerfall-type device (USB/PCMCIA). I applaud Apple on this decision. Another Detroit related record you will want to pick up is Rexxx Mantis EP D Records Jared Wilson FTM RECORDS From: "Tom Robbins" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Reply-To: "Tom Robbins" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "313 mailing list" <313@hyperreal.org> Subject: [313] records & recommendations Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2001 10:59:53 - Just wanted to mention some new D-related stuff that has come my way recently: Tim Baker: The Believer EP (Ovum) - two very mixable, very accessible, rolling grooves from Tim. Can't fail to see action. Trevor Rockcliffe feat. Blake Baxter: Visions Of You remixes (In-Tec) - loads of new mixes from Rockcliffe, Carl Cox, Samuel L Sessions, Roberto Mello (house), Smith & Selway. I have to say I wasn't that enamoured of most of them, but Cox's is the best mix I've ever heard from him. DJ T-1000: Hyper-Stylized Life (Pure Sonik) - Welcome back, Mr Oldham. Wicked EP, this, with 3 really impressive energetic and non-cliched loop cuts and one cool, original electroic funk cut. Definitely recommended. Other good stuff: WeltZwei: Intercity (Sender) - good funky minimalism from Germany. Len Faki; Everywhere Is Nowhere EP (Goodlife) - more very playable trax from Goodlife, though not as outstanding as their previous release - remixes of The Hacker's 'Fadin Away' Percy X: Maintain (Soma) - humming techno funk with a Steve Bicknell remix in Purpose Maker mode Midfield General: Coatnoise (Skint) - a bit like ZombieNation, actually, but defintely not what you'd expect from Skint. Good Dave Clarke remix, too. Re: [313] an observation
...just to add to your comments kyle, minus yellow is fun to play at a club too because 1/2 the people don't know that this is a richie hawtin remix track. people think your playing some goofy 80's tune so you see their faces light up with excitement because they recognize the track. then yes - it's a simple/effective mix into minus orange if you care to do that and the sounds of minus yellow can really be effective while mixing in various styles of techno/house. it's a nice record to have to change things up while djing. steve From: Kyle J Dupuy <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: [313] an observation Date: Thu, 25 Jan 2001 23:03:21 -0500 (EST) a few months back someone posted to the list requesting a description of richie hawtin's minus yellow. i believe the only response that was posted was like, "pretty boring - sounds just like minus orange," or something to that effect. a couple weeks later i came across it in a record bin but didn't pull it out, recalling what i had heard about it. recently i've borrowed a copy from a friend and have grown quite fond of it, and i get a kick out of the samples from ferris beuller. plus there are some pretty nice locked grooves that are good dj tools: you can go from one side of orange to a yellow locked groove, and then flip orange (its the same bpm) to the other side and quickly mix it in. sounds pretty good IMO. so now i'm quite wishing i had picked up that copy i saw in the record bin. just goes to show ya. . . kyle - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.

I thought the original had a good electro bassline - it was an ideal candidate for a Dave. C remix, then I went to my friends house for a mix and he'd just bought it - great record!
records & recommendations
Just wanted to mention some new D-related stuff that has come my way recently: Tim Baker: The Believer EP (Ovum) - two very mixable, very accessible, rolling grooves from Tim. Cheers, Tom MF

hawtin & acquaviva sets on napster?
so i was looking around on napster and found a set of mp3s called "richie hawtin & john acquaviva - 10 years of plus8 records" - now I assumed they were just the plus8 classics cds but they're really big (40-70 mins each) and when I downloaded part of one it appeared to be a dj mix, and not of classic plus 8 stuff. Anyone know what these really are? There's a whole lot of them too, several hours' worth of music altogether probably. chris

Re: [313] live on the puters
If it's crowd reaction you're talking about, setting up long breakdowns and pumping your fist in the air when the kick comes in seems to work pretty well, even if it's a cheap trick. The true heads aren't swayed by cheap theatrics, but then they'll be with you if the tracks are tight, even if all you do is hide under a table and tweak knobs. kent williams -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.cornwarning.com -- Iowa's First Techno Record Label http://www.mp3.com/chaircrusher -- tunes I'm doing my first ever set in a couple of weeks, Powerbook playing my tracks straight off Logic and tweaking them live with Pluggo. It doesn't matter to me that I'll have a few seconds of space in between songs. I think of it as time to let the listener clean their aural palate, so to speak ; ). What matters is that the tracks are "tight" before I even go in and mess with them.
