Yes, the man knows his cheese.. =)
Anyhoo, according to Carlos himself, he says he was quite misquoted through

[313] DEMF guide for palm/html!

2001-05-22 Thread chrise

Hi,

So i spent a few hours formatting the demf guide in html that's optimized
for viewing on a palm pilot or similar device. (that is, it's just text
and a little graphic).

it's at http://www.postraveclub.com/demf.html.

If you've got a palm pilot with avantgo software, all you have to do is
log in at www.avantgo.com and choose "create new channel." put in the
address listed above, and make sure you've got link depth set to
3. includ images if you want, or don't. There's just a little demf logo
at the top, you're not missing much if you don't include it. Then you
just need to save the channel, and sync your pilot. That's all there is
to it.

I'm relying on you all to error-check things for me, and email me with any
corrections. PLeas don't write asking for help getting it onto your pda
though :)

enjoy,

chris

2001-05-22 Thread Vince Woolums
Wow Chris, very nice work!

Much better than what I was working on. All the links seem to be working
fine, and the the only link that didn't come through was
electronicmusicfest.com - no big loss there. The formatting seems to be
spot on as well. A few of the pages use a different font, but that's no big
deal :) I didn't have AvantGo previously installed on my Palm, but the
account creation procedure was completely painless. Great that such
powerful software is free! Now if only there were someone updating this
page during the event with schedule and lineup changes, Miller-Ford Focus
Bacardi Lite Potato Sack Race winners and Pop Culture jokes (all for those
ritzy wireless users), that would be a techie's dream. This application is
available for all Palm/Visor/Windows CE and Webphone users. Check it out...

Cheers and thanks,

Relax - you're actually much closer to Record Time in Ferndale than if
you had flown into Detroit Metro.

Check it out:

I'm curious what you're flying, though - the only airline that operated
out of the City airport was Pro Air, and they're closed down at the moment.

john always packs the house here. chicks dig him, and guys are quick to
pick up on places to find fish in a barrel (however, i do go to listen
to acquaviva spin, in addition to getting digits.) :P

acquaviva is a simply a bigger draw (in detroit, anyway). i do love
listening to rob hood spin - he is an awesome dj with very honed mixing
skills. however, he plays to fast for my dancing tastes (maybe i just
need a bunch of trucker's crank?) though i doubt i'm alone. and, on
average, house always packs the dance floor more so than minimal
techno.

Re: [313] detroit wayne county vs. detroit metro airport

2001-05-22 Thread MikeD
I think you got a little mixed up. The "Detroit Wayne County" airport is
Detroit Metroropolitan Wayne County airport. Thats the one 1/2 way to ann
arbor (and where everyone flies into).

There are currently no airlines and no flights into Detroit City
airport. In fact, they removed City from the list of options on the
booking sites. PoorAir used to fly into there...but there license was
revoked last Sept. http://www.faa.gov/apa/pr/pr.cfm?id=1141

It's about a 30 minute drive in no traffic to downtown from DTW.

Enjoy

Re: [313] C4 show last friday (was Maestro)

2001-05-22 Thread Tom Robbins
Speaking of dance music on the screen, I actually managed to catch that
'Around The World In 80 Raves' show on Channel 4, UK last week - the one I
posted about beforehand (normally I post about these things then completely
forget about them!).

Anyway, these Brits who are travelling around America sampling its dance
scenes visited Detroit (amongst other places) on Friday's edition. Before
they reached the city they had had their heads filled with stories of how
dangerous it was, loads of murders etc etc, and frankly, most of them were
sh*tting themselves as a result. When they got there they were shown first
visiting the office/studio of Electrofunk Records to get 'clued up' on
ghetto-tech (none of them had heard of it before), then the guy from
Electrofunk (big fat bloke - name anyone?) took them to a club playing the
music. Didn't catch the name of the place, but most of the Brits' eyes were
popping out at the sight of people bumping & grinding to - you guessed it -
'Ass'n'titties' (!). One of the women was a former stripper herself, though,
so she got right in there and was a big hit with all the local guys -
unsurprisingly. At the end of the (pretty short) segment the Brit contingent
were clearly relieved not to have been mugged or murdered and were burbling
on about how everyone they met in Detroit was 'actually really nice' (shock
horror), but to the viewers the overall picture presented of Detroit was of
a dangerous city populated by leering, pawing fat blokes making stupid music
about womens breasts (No, please don't let's start a thread about the merits
or otherwise of Assault/gehetto-tech). Oh yeah, at one point the narrator
referred to Detroit as "the home of American techno", but that was it.

So there you have it. Anyone else in the UK catch it?

TOM

[313] Fw: CARL CRAIG - D.E.M.F CO-FOUNDER TAKES LEGAL ACTION

2001-05-22 Thread Tom Robbins
CARL CRAIG - D.E.M.F CO-FOUNDER TAKES LEGAL ACTIONDEMF CO-FOUNDER + CREATIVE
DIRECTOR TAKES LEGAL ACTION AGAINST FESTIVAL
PRODUCER.

Thursday 10th May 2001, at 2.00pm:
After months of creative differences with Pop Culture Media (D.E.M.F.
producers), Carl Craig received notice terminating his work as Creative
Director of the D.E.M.F. Pop Culture Media informed him that from May 30th
2001 his employment would end, it also states that he is to cease all
festival activities immediately.

4.00 pm the same afternoon:
Craig was contacted by local daily newspaper, the Detroit Free Press. The
journalist informed Craig that the story of his firing had been leaked to
the press and an article containing comments from festival director, Carol
Marvin and city official Phil Talbert was being written for release.

Friday 11th May:
The Detroit Free Press article was released - the result was shock and
outrage. Marvin, the producer of the festival, made statements to the
newspaper claiming that Craig had not met city deadlines and he had been
asked to stand down. Craig maintains that Marvin's statements are false and
were made to defame him, "I was not made aware of any city imposed
deadline's in my employment contract or in writing"

Carl Craig is now suing Pop Culture Media for defamation of character and
breach of contract. Craig did not violate any aspect of his contract with
Pop Culture Media as Marvin has alleged. Craig believes that Marvin
orchestrated this action in order to damage Craig's reputation and to
undermine his instrumental role in conceiving and ensuring the festival's
success.

"Marvin acted recklessly, damaging the integrity of the D.E.M.F. and my own
reputation by acting with only two weeks left before the festival," Craig
said.

As creative director, Craig used his influence as a respected member of the
Detroit music community and as an internationally acclaimed artist to
generate credibility amongst potential performers and fans to attend the
festival. With Craig's name at the forefront, last year's festival attracted
an attendance of 1.1 million fans from around the world, bringing pride to
the city of Detroit and renewed interest in Detroit techno music. The timing
of Marvin's statements and allegations against Craig have caused many
scheduled artists of the D.E.M.F. 2001 to reconsider their performances.
Craig has encouraged them to continue their participation in this year's
show.

"I have chosen to be low key about the pressures that I have endured over
the last three months," Craig says. "A positive image and strong artist
lineup for the DEMF have always been my main concerns. This is my dream to
have my friends and family of the music community perform at Hart Plaza.
This festival is good for everyone and I hope that it will continue to be a
success."

independent film festivals and the premiere night in the U.S. (where Morales
shows up with his monsterbuilt steroid bodyguards:)

Hopefully the film aires on TV sometimes somewhere...

There's been a debate about the lack of Chicago jocks (Hardy etc.) in the
film, only one included is Frankie. It basically concentrates on the N.Y.
scene only.

But it does have one unique element to it though: the last interview with
Francis Grasso, the founder of modern beat-mixing. I must say I'm waiting to
see that particular piece in the film more than anything. Hope there's some
documentary footage from that era also!

Detroit -let's face it: I don't think Detroit will ever get the recognition
(or film) they deserve. People just don't understand it, basically to most
dance enthusiasts Detroit guys were just a bunch of loonies who did wacky
beats and experimented with modern pop music... Don't kill me for saying
this! It's not my opinion but I believe that's the common folks opinion if
they had any.

RE: [313] Maestro

2001-05-22 Thread Jamil Ali

This is sort of on the same topic:

I once saw the last half of a documentary on detroit techno on Greek
public tv. It was on at 1:00 in the afternoon on a weekday, or something
like that. And of course my jaw hit the floor cause that was pretty much
the least likely thing for me to see... All I remember from it now was
Derrick May showing the interviewer some garage ind detroit that used to be
a theater and saying he liked the building. From what I saw, there was a
few people interviewed. Oh ya, they showed Juan Atkins (looking sort of
stoned and paranoid) going record shopping at Submerge.
Does any one know anything about this documentary?

Jamil

There was also something on MTV one Saturday night that featured a whole host of

did have it recorded but must have recorded over it (accidently of course!)
I would be great if it came on again but I don't even know what the show was

[313] open letter to Detroit

2001-05-22 Thread kenneth taylor

Courtesy of Detroit journalist and educator Kristin Palm:

Like the movie title says, last year’s DEMF indeed felt like a long drive
home. I say this not because I am one of the legions of Detroit’s techno
fanatics — I was a new wave teenager in Michigan’s culturally bereft north
country during the famed Music Institue days and, while I know and respect
techno music’s history, I wouldn’t have known Carl Craig from the Chemical
Brothers before Memorial Day last year (yes, that’s an exaggeration). I say
this because I am a Detroiter.
What Carl Craig created last year with the first DEMF was more than a
festival, more than a tribute, more than a home base for a music that has
had to travel too far for too long. More important than any of that, Carl
created a community. By booking three days of non-stop hip-hop, techno,
electro, acid jazz, DJs, PAs and MCs, Carl created a place where Detroiters
of all ages, races and ethnic groups did not for one second think about all
those artificial barriers that still divide us in our everyday lives,
because we were too busy grooving alongside suburbanites and tourists from
around the world. He created a space where all of us, despite our perceived
“differences” felt welcome and comfortable and safe. And, above all, he
showed us how much we, Detroiters, collectively, have to be proud of.
From the bombastic beats of Slum Village (or “Slum Willage” as my Bosnian
friend calls them, just to underscore their vast appeal) to the
Kraftwerk-by-way-of-Cass-Ave. delivery of Adult. to the historic
collaboration between Derrick May and Last Poet Omar Bin-Hassan and the
deep, early-morning grooves of Theo Parrish, Carl gave us an ultra-live,
in-our-faces, dance-our-asses-off picture of where we1ve been, where we’re
going and, beyond everything else, what we could become. Over one million
people, from the Ren Cen to Rotterdam, agreed with his vision so
wholeheartedly they’re still talking about it today.
Whatever the differences between Carl and Pop Culture Media1s Carol
Marvin, be they artistic, professional or, more than likely, petty, I can
think of no way the DEMF can continue without its visionary, the man who
sees the DEMF in terms of its spirit, not its sponsors. This point is
underscored for me whenever I think of just how peacefully last year’s DEMF
progressed. Not only did everyone groove together in harmony, I witnessed
none of the annoyances that plague typical festivals and venues. No drunks
shaking bare beer bellies in the middle of a tight-knit crowd, no underage
kids puking in trashcans, no parking lot potfests, or any of the other
reminders of social unease encountered regularly at places like Pine Knob
(excuse me, DTE Energy Music Theatre). Instead of "Drink! Drink! Drink!",
hundreds of thousands of people from around the world punctuated Richie
Hawtin's closing set with cheers of "Detroit! Detroit! Detroit!" It was an
earth-shaking moment, to be sure.
I think a large reason for this phenomenon was the community spirit of
Carl’s event. I wonder what the difference will be this year when, in
addition to the C-Pop Stage - named for a cultural institution and true

Detroit believer - we have the Miller Genuine Draft and Bacardi stages.
Feeling good? Loving your neighbor? Well, try this jello shot and you’ll
feel even better! Hell, try about ten! Then get in your Ford Focus and drive

home!
It saddens me immensely to say this, but the DEMF’s downward spiral has
begun. And my guess is that by this time next year it will be spinning out
of control. For Memorial Day 2002, I predict we’ll be sitting around the
barbecue again, grousing about the infusion of drunk-assed kids and maniac
drivers (in their Ford Explorers, of course) clogging up downtown, and we'll
reminisce about that brief time in our city’s history when we all felt like
family and Hart Plaza felt like home.

Re: [313] Maestro

2001-05-22 Thread cinqueorange
I would love to know about this documentary on techno.

I've talked to some of the people behind "Maestro." They are New Yorkers only
interested in telling the story of NYC. The documentary was never intended to
be a comphrensive story about dance music.

Francis Grasso just passed away a few weeks ago too.

There is a young man in NYC who did shoot a lot of footage about Detroit
techno. He just needs money to get the piece up and running.

People just focus on what they like I suppose.

It would be nice to see a comphrensive piece on dance music. I hated
"Modulations" because it just seemed to be a bunch of clips for an almost
MTV-like audience. I never really felt like the significance of the various
people was fully explained. I know it was meant to be a "crash course" in the
music but it was too sloppy.

Now that the DEMF has gotten bigger I'm sure some people are now thinking
about filming something on the scene.

[313] Records I'm selling...(OT)

2001-05-22 Thread Jonny McIntosh
Sorry for the lack of on-topicness. Especially in the midst of all this DEMF
shenanigans it makes me feel a bit mercenary, but f**k it ;) I'm selling a
few records (mostly non 313) in order to raise some cash for equipment. Any
help is appreciated. Only really 313 things are a Stacey Pullen remix and a
Carl Craig remix. Check 'em out at:

http://cgi6.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewListedItems&[EMAIL PROTECTED]
veshops.co.uk

(Cut and paste as required.)

Guilt forces me to try to get a bit more on topic: I rediscovered (whilst
rifling through the shelves to glean the lot above) the following:

Ian O'Brien's 2nd on 4th Wave - the first track on the side with 2 is deep
as you like; Dan Curtin's Apogee 12" on Peacefrog - if you can beyond the
"swoosh" sample, there's some phenomenal 303 bassline business there on the
opener; Ibadan nos. 1 to 20 (and more besides) - those mixes of "You Are In
My System" are superb; Soma before the marketing plan went into overdrive,
i.e. before #50, especially Otaku's "Emelia" (and the Slam LP has finally
grown on me); Basement Jaxx "Set Your Body Free"; how much Aubrey d!cked on
all the tech house rubbish of two years back; Ten City "That's The Way Love
Is" - almost brings a tear to the eye it's so good, even 12 years later or
whatever...

Jonny.

Re: [313] change to demf guide for palm

2001-05-22 Thread Mike Taylor

just to get the facts straight:

a. I never asked for the document to be removed.

b. After work today I am going to "reformat" Strings Of Life and At Les,
post them to the net and advertise publicly that they are available from my
site without Carl or Derrick's permission, and then not mention that I did
not create the source material in the first place.

If Carl or Derrick complain, I imply that they are mean spirited and greedy.
Since I "reformated" their work, obviously it is mine and I should be able
to do whatever I like with it without crediting anyone.
Only horrible people like the idea of having at least a limited amount of
control over how their work is distributed.

yup, I am a terrible person, it bothers me that somebody would modify and
repost something I worked on without permission or at least a reference to
the original document. If you would have taken two seconds to ask for
permission, and referenced the original document the whole issue would have
been avoided.

does it seem rediculous for somebody to take Innovator, press 1,000 2 cd
sets, release it on their own label, and then not credit derrick may? After
having done this, then claim Derrick should not have a problem with it
because you used a smaller 2cd jewel case and different cover art.

You just did exactly the same thing with text instead of audio.

aldoph hitler did the same thing to the jews; ok now this thread is over.

I think you got a little mixed up. The "Detroit Wayne County" airport is
Detroit Metroropolitan Wayne County airport. Thats the one 1/2 way to ann
arbor (and where everyone flies into).

There are currently no airlines and no flights into Detroit City
airport. In fact, they removed City from the list of options on the
booking sites. PoorAir used to fly into there...but there license was
revoked last Sept. http://www.faa.gov/apa/pr/pr.cfm?id=1141

It's about a 30 minute drive in no traffic to downtown from DTW.

Enjoy

conversation or heated debate. All I'm asking is that we *think twice*
before bringing into our world that kind of negativity. Language is
powerful...please be careful with it. Flame on.

Well, not closed down -- just without service from a professional airline.
That still leaves thousands of private pilots free to land, taxi, take off,

[313] was:Re: [313] The use of Hitler's name is:SubGenius Story Time(sorry.)

2001-05-22 Thread joshtwentythree
Germany enters Hitler's pet shop.

Germany: 'Ello, I wish to register a complaint.

Hitler: We're closin' for lunch.

Germany: Never mind that, my lad. I wish to complain
about this Reich
what I purchased not nine years ago from this very
boutique.

Hitler: Oh yes, the, uh, the Thousand Year
Reich...What's, uh...What's
wrong with it?

Germany: I'll tell you what's wrong with it, my lad.
It's dead, that's
what's wrong with it!

Hitler: No, no, it's uh,...it's resting.

Germany: Look, matey, I know a dead Reich when I see
one, and I'm
looking at one right now.

Hitler: No no it's not dead, it's, it's restin'!
Remarkable Reich, the
Thousand Year, idn'it, ay? Beautiful uniforms!

Germany: The uniforms don't enter into it. It's stone
dead.

Hitler: Nononono, no, no! It's resting!

Germany: All right then, if it's restin', I'll wake it
up! (shouting at
the cage) 'Ello, Mister Thousand Year Reich! I've got
a lovely world for
you to rule if you show...

(Hitler hits the cage)

Hitler: There, it moved!

Germany: No, it didn't, that was you hitting the cage!

Hitler: I never!!

Germany: Yes, you did!

Hitler: I never, never did anything...

Germany: (yelling and hitting the cage repeatedly)
'ELLO REICHY!
Testing! Testing! Testing! Testing! This is your nine
o'clock alarm
call!

(Takes Reich out of the cage and thumps its head on
the counter. Throws
it up in the air and watches it plummet to the floor.)

Germany: Now that's what I call a dead Reich.

Hitler: No, no.No, it's stunned!

Germany: STUNNED?!?

Hitler: Yeah! You stunned it, just as it was wakin'
up! Thousand Year
Reichs stun easily, major.

Germany: Um...now look...now look, mate, I've
definitely 'ad enough of
this. That Reich is definitely deceased, and when I
purchased it not
nine years ago, you assured me that its total lack of
movement was due
to it bein' tired and shagged out following a
prolonged squawk.

Hitler: Well, it's...it's, ah...probably pining for
Nuremburg.

Germany: PININ' for NUREMBURG?!?!?!? What kind of talk
is that?, look,
why did it fall flat on its back the moment I got it
home?

Hitler: The Thousand Year Reich prefers keepin' on its
back! Remarkable
Reich, id'nit, squire? Lovely uniforms!

Germany: Look, I took the liberty of examining that
Reich when I got it
home, and I discovered the only reason that it had
been sitting on its
perch in the first place was that it had been NAILED
there.

(pause)

Hitler: Well, o'course it was nailed there! If I
hadn't nailed that
Reich down, it would have nuzzled up to those bars,
bent 'em apart, and
VOOM! Feeweeweewee!

Germany: "VOOM"?!? Mate, this Reich wouldn't "voom" if
you put four
million volts through it! It's bleedin' demised!

Hitler: No no! It's pining!

Germany: It's not pinin'! It's passed on! This Reich
is no more! It has
ceased to be! It's expired and gone to meet its maker!
It's a stiff!
Bereft of life, it rests in peace! If you hadn't
nailed it to the perch
it'd be pushing up the daisies! Its metabolic
processes are now 'istory!
It's off the twig! It's kicked the bucket, it's
shuffled off its mortal
coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin'
choir invisible!!
THIS IS AN EX-REICH!!

(pause)

Hitler: Well, I'd better replace it, then. (he takes a
quick peek behind
the counter) Sorry squire, I've had a look 'round the
back of the shop,
and uh, we're right out of Reichs.

Germany: I see. I see, I get the picture.

Hitler: I got a corporation.

(pause)

Germany: (sweet as sugar) Pray, does it rule the
world?

Hitler: Nnnnot really.

Germany: WELL IT'S HARDLY A BLOODY REPLACEMENT, IS
IT?!!???!!?

Hitler: Look, if you go to my mate's pet shop in
Italy, he'll replace
the Reich for you.

Germany: Italy, eh? Very well.

(The customer leaves.)

(The customer enters the same pet shop. The owner is
putting on a false
moustache.)

Germany: This is Italy, is it?

Hitler: (with a fake mustache) No, it's Moscow.

Germany: (looking at the camera) That's inter-city
rail for you.

The name of the doco was called 'Universal Techno'. On the Detroit
tip they interviewed Blake Baxter, Derrick, Juan, Kevin (who was the
Submerge shopper), Kenny Larkin, Mike Banks.

It also has interviews with the owner of Tresor, Sven Vath, and a
whole swag of Europeans.

Peace,
Patrick.
