I got it too :( Some other people have said it's pretty serious stuff, here's a link: http://www.mcafee.com/anti-virus/viruses/sircam/default.asp?.cid=2360 (I hope that link works). Unfortunately, it sent itself to everyone in the Outlook address book on my computer, which only my late father used. So basically, everyone in his address book received email from a dead guyoh, the messages on my answering machine when I got home from work yesterday... [313] Dan Curtin and Matter of Sound
Hey all nice to see all this talk about Dan. I haven't been too fond of the latest release from him. The Purveroys of Fine Funk on Catalyst!!! YUCK...and the last Time Undefined was not up to par like the Time Undefined(s) he did on Strictly Rhythm. I think POFF is just Dan now because I don't sense that same dope feeling like those records sound like when Mike Filly was recording with him as well as Tatsuro Hyashi on the first 3 Purveryors on Peacefrog. Mike did a track with him on the Ferox Further Adventures in Techno Soul sampler and the RTA movement EP on Reel (Sublime)as well as that first POFF on Nepenta. Those are all worth tracking down. The last one he did as Purveyors on Nepenta was also kind of boring and samey house with repetitive samples I will say this though...Dan is capable of making incredible music and I have respect for what he's done for electronic music. Everyone should grab the new "One Evening at Mrs. Applebees" It's not new but actually old tracks off of this EP called Dream not of Today and I think a track he did off a new electronica compilation if I'm not mistaken. Other Curtin jams of recent recollection are the recent Planetary on Metamorphic and the Player 12" and the recent Delsin release under another alias ;) before all that I remember a great EP on star baby as well. Look out for Curtin's older material for a taste of what really makes him such a prolific producer. About Matter Of Sound, it was a limited 7" release (500 copies I believe) on red vinyl that was mastered shitty and even cut off part of the beginning of one of the tracks due to the poor mastering. it is excellent though and happy hunting for it. minto __ Do You Yahoo!? Well well! That's true! And I hadn't noticed myself. I don't think Rushour are going to mass-release back catalogue items. This might be a one-shot thing. Once we receive our copies, I'll post a track listing. it's two of their favorite old curtin tracks (one night at ms applebee's and una pequena melodia en domingo) plus one new one which i think is sorta "broken beat"...aka deep techno.. jt sqrrt -Original Message- From: Lee Herrington [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, July 21, 2001 11:50 PM To: sqrrt Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: [313] Any new Dan Curtain material? Fabric remains your best bet for quality DJs. Kev Saunderson, Aril Brikha and Technasia are playing there on 4.8 Not bad... Any other recommendable events in London between 2.8 and 12.8? Besides techno I also like house, electro, idm, broken beat, nu-jazz, hip hop, dub, funk, down tempo...hell, any quality stuff. Re: [313] nate jabbers for potentially the last time.
wow, this, to me, is coincidental that Stevie is brought up. We were JUST enthusiastically admiring his beautifully, "soulful", melodic knack (he seems humble too, as you can attest). Stevie to me represents such an immense influence on modern pop, R&B, production techniques (he can be a one man band, not afraid of technology). He was one of the first R&B artists to embrace obviously synthetic sounds rather than easily synthesized representations of acoustic instuments. Are you saying he's become complacent in his older age? His albums did get continually more mellow. In that era there was not nearly as many choices, but that was the outer edge of pop, everyone still knew all the words. Just like we try to find that underground sound, because we can, and be proud of our respectable independence. It's so diluted now with millions of world wide artists. It's hard to find genius with big business always clouding the top 40 market..ugh. That is why I find interest in artists like D. May, Mills, Thomas Scumacher, Lekebusch, Velvet, etc. dispensing their brand of modern; jazz; funk (music) completely embracing technology. I just prefer synthetic sounds to acoustic ones, I guess. As for politics, I'm not on this list to jab with my fellow future(whatever) music mates, but to rather explore my quest for that feeling of music with that fleeting feeling of hearing something and cringing with excitement. yea... goodbye Nate sometime it's good to step away and gain a new perspective and a big thanks for reinforcing my love of my man Stevie faulkner style CM www.mp3.com/concretemassage (there's no Reason) - From: "Nathan John de Yonker" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > So hi everyone. [313] nate jabbers for potentially the last time.
So hi everyone. Something I saw today astounded me. Thought maybe I could get some good conversation going before I leave 313/734/248 for the first time since I was a wee infant. Are we living in a more self-serving time? I went to Comerica Park today to see Stevie Wonder on a television perform live a few miles away. Stevie Wonder is a very rich man. Stevie Wonder has also stopped being a major creative force. Yet there was something that I witnessed that changed me. Here he was being moved to tears, thanking everyone from a woman that he created an entire album with, to a stage hand who was placing his microphone with the same enthusiasm. Everyone who came to see got down, even though we weren't even truly there. Even though he is a long way from Songs in the Key Of Life, he is an amazing performer, and a man with more soul than i could pretend to muster. Is Motown and the pop music of that era a more social and caring culture? Is Detroit techno and the pop music of our era a more introspective and personal experience? Is this why people who listen to electronic music have a hard time letting loose and getting together? No one really dances TOGETHER at raves or clubs, do they? I'm not counting slabs of beefs and people on drugs that encourage freakiness. It seems like this list likes to talk about who is on someone's nuts, or what is art, or why is some pretentious newcomer who doesn't understand the etiquette of self-promotion a chump? Did anyone ever wonder who was on Smokey Robinson's nuts? Or were people just plain content with getting the most out of this universal and beautiful music, and having a good time. Think about the difference between Stevie Wonder telling me he loves me just because I took the time to witness his art, and some of the posturing that the techno community thinks is so cool. I should've played at this festival because I taught so and so a guitar lick, or this person sucks because they are white, or this music is so overtly commercial that only idiots like you could appreciate it. Maybe I need to put some distance on 313, so that I can really digest it and create with what i've learned from it. Maybe we all need to put some distance in before we judge everyone else and act insanely hostile on a ludicrous music discussion forum. n8 - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[313] cex,marumari,stars as eyes
Just wanted to say I was pretty much blown away by the show we did last night with Cex,Marumari, and Stars as Eyes. Stars as Eyes played some stuff that I thought was really good, an excellent addition to the tigerbeat6 roster. Very much in the genre -- occasional forays into wacky digital noise, but with a real core of actual musicality. Marumari was rocking stuff that's obviously from wolve's hollow and supermogadon but a lot harder and dancier that the album. He actually has a stage presence, jacking his body to the music and giving a little smirk when he starts bringing in something that knows will feel good. Cex was here in April, and rocked the joint, but the intervening 20 odd shows have really sharpened him up both as an MC and all around entertainer. And his new beats are really, really tight. He played some of his new stuff @ the record store today, and leaving the hype and controversy aside (which, near as I can tell, is largely confined to a few crabasses on IDM) he really is an excellent musician and producer. Not only that, he really captivates a crowd. People dig him. He is someone we'll be able to bring back to IC, and the word of mouth will make each show bigger than the last. Haters need to loosen up the tighty whities and have a little fun for once. Before and after the live sets I got to play IDM DJ which was a lot of fun. I usually spin vinyl -- more house and techno than idm -- but I brought out the Denon and played whatever the hell I wanted, which is really liberating. One thing people don't realize is that even pretty 'out there' stuff -- Venetian Snares, 606, Speedranch -- actually gets a strong visceral reaction from audiences who were raised on punk. People were dancing to Venetian Snares, a sight surely worth the price of admission. One thing that was interesting to me is that the only time people were coming up wanting to know what I was playing was during tracks off of Rich Devine's Lipswitch. Again it's suprising what people with adventurous ears make an immediate connection with. After the show Josh showed the Marumari video for Baby M, which combines a really lovely track with a naively wacky Sci Fi narrative about Josh taking an alien bug back to its home planet, where it repays his kindness by saving him from a giant Lobster. There's another bit with josh taking a glowing head -- the glass head off the back of Supermogadon -- to a tribe of brownskinned dolls with blond hair. You get the idea... The coolest thing is that Josh did all the 3d animation and special effects. You heard it here first -- this could be a huge hit on MTV2. Not only is the song sublime ear candy, the whole video is completely lush eye candy. Not only should it be in heavy rotation on MTV2, it will probably get Josh work doing other people's videos... - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
