Unrelated but also worthwhile is the Kirk Degiorgio Check One mix on two
CDS
from 1996. I think it was released on Applied Rhythmic Technology.

That was on X:Treme;
which also released Attica Blues' Drum Major Instinct
Alex Attias Hi-Fi Jazz, Phil Mison Soundcolors 3 mixes.

[313] black techno artists

2002-02-12 Thread Luna
I would just like to say that I never quoted Juan Atkins and I never
claimed to. I sent my post not to pretend I knew what he said but what
my impressions of what I read. My goal was to begin a dialogue of this
article to clarify the important ideas in it. A few people did post me
back with constructive thoughts. These people had the decency to know
that I was curious. The article left a bad taste in my mouth because I
too would like the realization of a social utopia. Luckily, some of the
messages I received helped me to see where Atkins was coming from.
Isn't that the purpose of dialogue? I don't read something and try
to see the negative in it first. That path leads people nowhere. We
end up just talking to hear ourselves talk.
Guess what? I learned something that I wouldn't have if everyone
would have dismissed my post or wrote me back with some sarcastic
remark.

You'll want to track down their album Secret Handshakes ... great stuff!

Kushti are Skratch Daddy Addy and Blast according to the liner
notes. Plaid does do production and have some writing credits, but
I'm certain at least that Skratch Daddy Addy is a seperate entity,
having seen (and heard) him scratch live for Plaid (check select
cuts on Rest Proof Clockwork).

[313] Sounds like Environ

2002-02-12 Thread Andy Mitchell
Hey peoples,
A friend of mine is looking for labels to hit with some crunchy retro
stuff... Environ immediately came to mind, but can anyone recommend some
other labels on a similar tip? If anything his sound is a little less housey
and a bit more IDM-hoppy, maybe somewhere along the lines of Metro Area
meets Prefuse 73 (maybe).
Thanks in advance,

[313] Black Brit Tech

2002-02-12 Thread Odeluga, Ken
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:

Just wanted to hear about Black artists and their influence on the music
...

'What about Europe?'

... Do check out Colin McBean - AKA 'G Flame'. (sometimes with a 'Mr G')
also uses the 'Halcyon Daze' alias.

... he of course, with Francisco Feirrera (who was once Derrick May's
engineer) made up the other half of The Advent - which I now understand is
solely Cisco ... certainly on the Time Trap Technik LP out last year.

G Flame Mr G work appeared first in about 1996 ... Mr G is widely held to
be FF.

Mr G's work differs in it's retracing more toward house than the
ultra-modern sheen of The Advent (Also check Soul Destroyaz on Synewave if
you prefer the Advent's strain.). Mr G's material is housier, more
conventionally funky. There are snatches of strings, vocals - but the beats
are always a lot more subtle if one scratches below the surface. It does
sound quite Lo-fi though.

A very rough Mr G discography which is also totally subjective therefore
virtually useless save for background info is ... ;O)

1. Tell Him (1999) (With G Flame) Phoenix G
3. Lites(2000) (With G Flame) (Phoenix G
2. Flight Of the Phoenix Double Pack (2000) (With G Flame) Phoenix G
3. Change EP (Feat. Take My Back - which I would particularly recommend)
(2000) Cargo? - Anyway, released in NY
3. Wot, Eh, Pardon? (Christmas 2000 Ltd release) Phoenix G
2. Beatz For Yo Mind/Take A Toke (2001) Phoenix G
3. Gs Strings/Walk Through (2001) Duty Free

From reading the odd rare interview of Colin McBean, I think anyone who

2002-02-12 Thread Ian Dinsmor

side-note: on the sampler for jill's new album there's a remix of one of the
songs off 'who is jill scott', i've also heard a drum 'n bass track that use
one of her songs, and i've seen a house-cover of one of her songs on tmf
[dutch mtv] the last couple of days, all of those are [imho] utter crap! so
why theo' remix is not given the green light, and those have is beyond me.

The Remix on her live album is a remix by 4hero. And the other house remix
of He Loves Me is a bootleg. Theo's remix is not entirely dead, Ive heard
its coming out as a bootleg as well.

I also buy online quite regularly, and agree with your comments on
smallfish. I buy from Groovetech regularly and havnt had any problems with
them - however I do buy CD's which could explain it. Another online retailer
I use regularly is

www.bi-wire.co.uk

and also www.recordtime.com

both of which have great service in my experiences.

Well actually, there are going to be a lot of really
exciting things going on at the DEMF this year...first
off, there will be a group of greeters at the main
gate they are a group of highly trained howler monkeys
with a penchant for throwing poop...they will be
wearing t-shirts that say demf posse in da hiz-ouse
muthafuckas so you can easily spot them, they will
have great goodies to hand out, such as throwing poop
at you, and stuff with poop on it...also maybe some
things they were gnawing on...some of the top
performers will be regular detroit favorites such as
Lisa Lashes, Judge Jules, Paul Oakenfold and a
performance by 313 favorite, Moby...also a special
rare performance by dubiously named godfather of
detroit techno...Cat Stevens!...the master of
ceremony this year will be none other then the lovable
scamp carrot top, and a special speaker...TV's Bob
Saget!!! he will be regaling the crowd with anecdotes
of his early years growing up in the ghettos of
detroit...also, a new addition this year will be that,
instead of buying overpriced food from vendors, they
will actually be able to just knock you down, take
your wallet and smear some sort of food substance on
your face while asking you like that bitch!...so as
you can see the demf as a lot to offer this year.

this was *so* last year. Although i understand that being a member of the

superiority over the mainstream by tossing out such witty and crass comments
on a regular basis, but i just find this so old.

All i'm gonna say is lets just hold off on the

UNTIL the lineup and everything is announced. Sometimes people on this list

what's going on with it yet.

As far as i know, k-hand took over cc's position. can anyone confirm this?

Now if oakie, or tall paul, or any of those sleazebags DO appear on the
lineup, then go ahead and rip the festival to shreds. But lets try to hold
off on that for now.

your wallet and smear some sort of food substance on
your face while asking you like that bitch!...so as
you can see the demf as a lot to offer this year.

  some of the top
performers will be regular detroit favorites such
 as
Lisa Lashes, Judge Jules, Paul Oakenfold and a
  performance by 313 favorite, Moby...also a
 special
rare performance by dubiously named godfather of
  detroit techno...Cat Stevens!...the master of
ceremony this year will be none other then the
 lovable
  scamp carrot top,

this was *so* last year. Although i understand
that being a member of the
super underground elite requires everyone to
 constantly show their
superiority over the mainstream by tossing out
 such witty and crass
 comments
on a regular basis, but i just find this so old.

All i'm gonna say is lets just hold off on the

DEMF-is-so-commercial-now-i-remember-back-in-the-day-when-it-was-so-undergro
 und-because-i'm-old-school
UNTIL the lineup and everything is announced.
 Sometimes people on this
 list
are so ready to pounce and attack something, and
 *you* don't even know
what's going on with it yet.

As far as i know, k-hand took over cc's position.
 can anyone confirm
 this?

Now if oakie, or tall paul, or any of those
 sleazebags DO appear on the
lineup, then go ahead and rip the festival to
 shreds. But lets try to
 hold
  off on that for now.

Re: [313] DEMF or what?

2002-02-12 Thread innercity records
isn't demf meant to be an electronic music festival
in detroit? not a purely detroit techno festival.

so what if the likes of jules etc play. i'm sure you'll
still get the usual detroit suspects playing at various
stages and after parties.

it's just like tribal gathering in uk a few years back.
you had the likes of faithless, sasha, pete tong and
co taking over 2 or 3 tents. even a happy hardcore
tent. but there was also the detroit techno tent, a tent
specially put up for kraftwerk, a tent for weatherall
to play dub all day to 3 people, a tent for hard euro
techno with sven + dave clarke, a chill out tent etc...

if you don't like who's on one stage then simply move
away and find something you do like. doesn't paul oakenfold
play in detroit at motor? and fills it everytime. this shows
that there's obviously more to detroit than snobby techno heads
just like there's more to the uk than trance and drum n bass.
just find what you like and leave others to enjoy what they like.

as for extortionate food vendors. it's been the same at
every music event since time began.

lighten up, it's free isn't it? you really don't appreciate how
lucky you are having something like that in your home town.

paul

Well actually, there are going to be a lot of really
exciting things going on at the DEMF this year...

Brilliant. This is probably the funniest thing I've read on 313 in a
while.

ok...i really shouldn't cause it's not list
appropriate but i feel like i gotta say something...it
was a joke...i was just trying to say something
funny...most people seem to have been able to take it
that way, i went to the demf and i had a great
time...i'm probably going to go this year, just
because i like being in detroit and i know i'll
probably have fun...it was a joke, not a social
statement, or a vocalizing of dissatisfaction or an
exercising of my elitism...i was just trying to say
something funny because i'm bored at work and other
people are too...

there's a message with the dates and an email address you can hit for more

Hope it helps
