Me, I actually LIKE the Liberators! They know how to rock a crowd and keep a
positive vibe going. It's true, it's not brain food (mostly - I heard
'Moonraker' by the Foremost Poets first dropped by them - the original mix)
but it's damned good fun! Most importantly, they've still got this idea
about dance being something like a unifying and catalytic social force.
(Naive, I agree, but I'm a sucker for sincere idealists and triers). And
underpinning the compilations of medieval acid, is always a push to get
people involved in their environments and take control of their lives -
usually politically.

Sound familiar, Detroit?

I had a laugh recently when I read a track title on one of Chris' latest
mixes 'Hackney Council Are A Bunch of C*nts'! I think the Nuclear Free Zone
parties are still running at 414 (Brixton)... I'd recommend them.

Hey Tom,

If you recall I put it in my top 10 for 2001...can't say as I know anything
about the artist or label though...

TC> Their website (http://www.surveillancerecordings.com/) looks great but
> there's no actual content...

I found http://www.surveillance.net doing a quick search but that is another
label altogether...though also from Detroit, and also techno. Seems
strange that there are two Techno labels in the same city with the same
name!

Lemme know if you find out anything! It would be nice if someone could shed
some light on the subject.

Ohhh and for something in a similar vein you should check out AJ Hunter's
Pressure Point EP on Parotic Music, track it down and you'll find it's well
worth the effort... It's probably the most interesting record I bought all
of last year, seriously deep Techno/House with a Chicago feel and
intriguing programming - the record has such a beautifully textured sound to
it (if that makes any sense;-)

Cheers,

m*

Gary R kindly pointed out to me that there are actually some hidden links
down the left side of the web page - including MP3 versions of the tracks on
the EP...

I think Dark Energy would generally be considered more of a double EP, like a
few of the Red Planet releases etc... Although where the line between double EP

I think Dark Energy would generally be considered more of a double EP, like a
few of the Red Planet releases etc... Although where the line between double EP
and Album is drawn I couldn't really say. Anyone out there with a suggestion?

RE: [313] DJ Sneak in Ann Arbor tonight.

2002-02-15 Thread Grammenos, Peter

He didn't change up his set up enough for me, continuously banging away, and
i don't know about you but at 5am I like it when a dj tones it down, even if
only for a few songs. Both Kevin and Derrick did this flawlessly, playing
nice diverse sets ... i didn't sit once for kevin's set.

As for MAW (Does Kenny even spin anymore?) , if you ever get the chance
don't miss a little louie vega set, he's still doing his sunset ritual party
here in nyc . Plays a little too many vocal house tracks for my taste
but when he gets to playing his tribal house, there's no stopping him.

I've not seen Doc Martin.

Re: [313] can't we all just get along?

2002-02-15 Thread Cyborg K
In the USA, racial injustice (esp. in terms of black/white) does NOT
simply stem from an awareness of superficial differences in skin color. It
stems from our history of slavery and institutionalized racism that have
conditioned people over many years (and even outside the USA, the history of
colonization of the OTHER must be considered as a historical reality).
People's mental attitudes reflect a historical reality that has conditioned
them (in Mad Mike's words "programmed") them to respond to race in certain
ways. More generally, the "WHITE MALE" actually has historically been (and
continues to be) in control economically and politically; therefore, when
people internalize an attitude that the white male is superior, they are
simply building a mental image that conforms to what already exists as
historical/material reality. Those who command and control are respected,
their ideas are accepted as being true and naturally by virtue of their real
position of power in a system of hierarchies; that is what allows the
programmers to so easily instill their set of values within the masses. So
dealing with racism means confronting history and really existing power
structures, not simply confronting "irrational" prejudices and attempting to
be color blind. This would mean you would need to approach the question of
race in techno from a completely different perspective than the one you are
bringing. /cyborg k

Racial injustice stems from an awareness of the differences in superficial
physical characteristics (i.e. skin color) and the subsequent exploitation
and oppression of persons exhibiting such differences.
In order to address racial matters as they relate to music, one must raise
an awareness of the same physical traits which precede the problem in the
first place.

Now I know that racism stems from the mind, and prejudice isn't necessarily
an inborn quality. Yet it seems to perpetuate, even among the open minded
in our world, through sheer repetition of the issue at stake. In other
words, I may not see a black person as any lesser a man than a white person,
but I'll damn well be forced to ponder the thought the more incessantly I'm
faced with the question. Suggestion is a very valuable tool (as proven by
numerous examples in history and especially by the work of many modern
psychologists). When reinforced over time, it solidifies into an implicit
belief until it eventually establishes itself as a hardline value.

Paul Virilio:
"Resistance is always possible! But we must engage in resistance first of
all by developing the idea of a technological culture. However, at the
present time, this idea is grossly underdeveloped. For example, we have
developed an artistic and a literary culture. Nevertheless, the ideals of
technological culture remain underdeveloped and therefore outside of popular
culture and the practical ideals of democracy. This is also why society as a
whole has no control over technological developments. And this is one of the
gravest threats to democracy in the near future. "

In the USA, racial injustice (esp. in terms of black/white) does NOT
simply stem from an awareness of superficial differences in skin color. It
stems from our history of slavery and institutionalized racism that have
conditioned people over many years (and even outside the USA, the history
of

colonization of the OTHER must be considered as a historical reality).
Those who command and control are respected,
their ideas are accepted as being true and naturally by virtue of their
real

position of power in a system of hierarchies; that is what allows the
programmers to so easily instill their set of values within the masses. So
dealing with racism means confronting history and really existing power
structures, not simply confronting "irrational" prejudices and attempting
to

be color blind.

In other
words, I may not see a black person as any lesser a man than a white
person,

but I'll damn well be forced to ponder the thought the more incessantly I'm
faced with the question.

Nevertheless, the ideals of
technological culture remain underdeveloped and therefore outside of
popular
culture and the practical ideals of democracy. This is also why society as
a
whole has no control over technological developments. And this is one of
the

gravest threats to democracy in the near future. "

He didn't change up his set up enough for me, continuously banging away,
and
i don't know about you but at 5am I like it when a dj tones it down, even

only for a few songs. Both Kevin and Derrick did this flawlessly, playing
nice diverse sets ... i didn't sit once for kevin's set.

As for MAW (Does Kenny even spin anymore?) , if you ever get the chance
don't miss a little louie vega set, he's still doing his sunset ritual
party

here in nyc . Plays a little too many vocal house tracks for my taste
but when he gets to playing his tribal house, there's no stopping him.

I've not seen Doc Martin.

i would most definitely say go...

definitely a couple of live pas worth catching, especially sines. i was a
tad bit disappointed in the live performance at times by noel, but what it
was lacking was just bass...i dunno. i'm a bass fanatic and there was just
an element missing to the live sets that his actual production has...

todd sines...all i have to say is go see him any opportunity you have...his
live pa is phenomenal in my personal opinion. i haven't heard him play in
over six months but the last time was definitely great. he topped stewart
walker's set by a longshot at that particular show.
