[313] Gescom MiniDisc

2002-06-14 Thread Pryor, Ryan N
A minidisc with 88 tracks.
When you play it, you put the MiniDisc
player in random mode and allowed it to remix the 88 tracks.
Always random, always different...

Has anyone tried this??

[313] Great web listenin'

2002-06-14 Thread Andy Mitchell
Not techno, but very much the sound of Detroit... I stumbled across this
wicked recent live set by Tribe Records jazz man Phil Ranelin online
yesterday, recorded on WDET shortly before the reissues of Ranelin's albums
Vibes From The Tribe and The Time Is Now by Hefty Records:

http://www.heftyrecords.com/audio/ranelin_WDET.ram

The Ranelin remix album on Hefty is well worth checking too - mixes by Kirk
Degiorgio, Morgan Geist, Jan Jelinek, Telefon Tel Aviv, Prefuse 73 etc.

2002-06-14 Thread james bucknell
i recently found the same record. (in australia of all places, a country not
usually known for it's high quality obscure detroit gems sitting around in
second hand stores)--it's deep deep piano house, quite melodic and maybe a
little 'sweet and pretty' sounding for some. there's one stand out track, an
outside cut.
i wonder how the other 298 owners like it.

  Start of message text

Picked up a Never On Sunday record at lunch today that I'd never seen
 before.
It's on 430 west and says on the sheet that there's only 300 copies, and
 it's on blue vinyl.

There was a massive queue for the listening post, so I just bought it - £15
Is it any good? Have I been ripped-off? I thought I had all their
 records...

Any info appreciated, no record deck at work and I'm bored
 stiff..

Blaze - Spiritually Speaking on Slip 'n' Slide.

Apparantly their first original album in over ten years (?). They have
really taken things back to the roots of house with this album anyway,
except for the track that the website has a sample of - my least favourite
track - don't judge what's coming by this track! I would say the majority of
tracks were produced with studio musicians. Its hot.

RE: [313] blaze

2002-06-14 Thread James Hurlbut
Apparently it's already found its way onto the net. The bits I've heard are
really good. There's some tracks with more of a traditional jazz structure
than I've heard from Blaze before, or maybe just more live musicians. Some
of it is a little too cookie-cutter Blaze deepness with lamentations of the
current state of the dance scene that get tiring after awhile IMO, like the
track thats getting played here, Do You Remember House. Don't get me
wrong its fantastic, I was just hoping for more. Here's something from Slip
'n' Slide about the bootlegging:

Bastard Bootleggers...MAY THEIR DAUGHTERS GROW FACIAL HAIR.!
Hiya Peeps and Peepettes, Sad news has come forward indeed... Blaze's new
Album Spirituall Speaking is being raped as we speak... I am upset to say
the least, but being that a I am a cynic with an optimistic outlook, I see
the glass as half full...so Bootleggers, a curse upon your folicles..
Please note all you lovely guardian of right, that SLIP N SLIDE will not be
moved...We will still release Blaze come Sept 9..2002...come what may...
So all you vanguards of right and justice, please tell the whole
world..that we will not be force by Bootleggers to react and release such a
gem as Spiritually Speaking until it has matured..(Please note ref...to
Grolsch Its not ready yet...). Thanks for all your support... The ph factor.

have it too... I kind of rushed to buy it when I got my Minidisc ! i tried
listening at random of course, and I must say it is a weird experience, as
with pretty much all Autechre music, I'd say it is immersive, I tend to
daydream a lot when listening to that stuff... The difference here, with
that randomness factor, is that the daydreams are always different, no
predictability possible ; I'd say it is worth it at least to try it for a

Only problem is these DVD's are 'region 2' and will not play in US
DVD players that are 'region 1'

on top of that zone 1 / zone 2 problem, another one is that even if you have
a multi-zone player, you may get BW image because of the film being encoded
in Pal or Secam while the US are NSTC... just my experience of playing US

Its OK - not sure if I would but it though

However, he also admitted that he hasnt even listened to the new track that

The last time I spoke to him he hadnt watched it - something about problems

Hi Berislav,

I only know of one aka for Eddie Fowlkes: Detroit Soul Project. The track I
know is : Detroit Is A Ghetto out on Pan records, UK, 1998, although, I'm
told there were others.

Of course, EF did 'Sex In Zero Gravity' with the Martian, apparently. To me
it sounds nothing like his style.

Best regards,

[313] Basic Channel

2002-06-14 Thread Tom Robbins/Magic Feet
I'm interviewing Basic Channel on Monday (!), so does anyone have any
suggestions for pertinent questions? Of course I have a few in mind already,
but I'd welcome the list's thoughts all the same. I'll also be talking to
Scion, too, so the same applies.

Re: [313] Finally A Conference About the Business...

2002-06-14 Thread glyph1001

This is a nice one! And in Vegas too! :-)

One thing I wish they would have is an 'in' towards the movie industry
where movies houses can license music from indie electronic/dance labels.

Nonetheless, its looks like a great conference.

2002-06-14 Thread Matthew MacQueen
I'm interviewing Basic Channel on Monday (!), so does \
anyone have any suggestions for pertinent questions?

Fun! Just off the top of my head, I've always wondered how did they decide that
with the final basic channel record it was time to retire the label after
Phylps Trak II (BC-09), that it had run it's logical course as basic channel
? What factors contributed to their decision ?

How did doing Cyrus: Enforcement (001) with the Mills mix unfold? Did they
have the track in mind, and were looking for a remixer? Were others
considered? Or did Mills help define the sound of 001 early on with them? Was
he in the studio with them at any time or was it all remotely done swapping
DATs? were there other mixes that were done but never released?

Did their vision for the label change course during it's run? Or it was never
reeally all that pre-meditated, it just happened organically? Do they look
back and have a favorite release ?

Do they still own property in Detroit? (did they ever? or was that a rumour)

I know that's a lot but, just some of the things I've always wondered about.
Basic Channel is such a great little mirocosim of everything I love about the
Belin/Detroit sound trade.

Peace,
Matt

RE: [313] Basic Channel

2002-06-14 Thread brendan . nelson
Now that the most stressful period of the working day is over, I'll add some
too...

I'd add a question about whether or not they've ever been approached to do
film soundtrack work, and, if not, if their approach to their music has had
a visual aspect to it; to me, each BC release evokes strong visual images,
but the sorts of films where that sound would be an appropriate
accompaniment probably haven't been made yet.

Also, I'd ask whether it was their intention to spawn such a large range of
'copycats' and essentially introduce a new sound into techno and house -
even fairly commercial house - which would permeate right to the core, or if
the impact of the BC releases was greater than they ever expected it to be.

Was the drive to develop the BC sound borne of a frustration with sounds
being used in techno at the time, or was it an idea that came from another
direction? How long did it take to develop, from the first concept of a
truly three-dimensional, heat-haze shimmering, sound, to the first
successful execution?

And finally, which would they say was the first track on which a proto-Basic
Channel sound was deployed? Ploy? Infinition? Domina?

Cheers,

Brendan

Re: [313] Basic Channel

2002-06-14 Thread Wes
Ask about the re-release of all the wonderful Wackies material with which
they're currently heavily involved, how BC continues to tie in with
Rhythm Sound. Who else from the Jamaican pantheon of reggae singers
players might they collaborate with in the future?

Any chance of more remixes of Carl Craig material (a la Climax,
Quadrant)?

To what extent do they feel the superb laptop mac stylings of Scion (live,
at any rate) match (or uneasily rub up against) the obsessive analog ethos
of BC? Does the upcoming Scion/BC Tresor set represent a techno. 'soundclash'
in that respect?

Perhaps they should've played Silent Property to make the point a bit
stronger?

Anyways, I think a lot of their attitude stems from disgust about the
whole electroclash hype. Here's the article about it:
http://www.eye.net/eye/issue/issue_06.13.02/thebeat/adult.html

I guess I can understand that they're afraid of a backlash against all
artists painted with the electroclash marketing brush (though
electroclash sucks just doesn't have a good ring to it), and that a
number of artists are jumping on the bandwagon before they've developed
their own sound (or can even do a live show), but I think the people who
were pushing this sound before it became popular will continue to have a
following even after everything plays out.

Looking forward to hearing them play in TO tonight...

[313] basic channel

2002-06-14 Thread John Kohlstrand
I'm going to expose myself as uncouth and dorky here, but, my Basic
Channel question would be: Why did the Basic Channel CD suck so?

(Okay, that's melodramatic. Please, no thread about how the CD ruled.
Fine. Different strokes. I respect you. Respect me...)

What I really mean is: The vinyl was so cool. Up. With it. Smart, yet
fun. Each record built upon the previous record, and they all hung
together fairly well. They sang with one voice. And while a couple of
the tracks ran toward the ambient end of the spectrum, these moments
seemed (to me) side salads and not entrees.

But the CD: I haven't pulled it in a long time, but, as I recall, it is
loaded with ambient, beatless shishing and swooshing. I found it a real
disappointment -- one drum machine short of a good time. Intellectually
interesting, to be sure -- all Basic Channel spoke to the mind. But
listening to the CD was reading Noam Chomsky -- where the vinyl was like
delving into Salon.com. Hip, smart, invigorating and approachable.

My memories may be twisted, but that's how I saw it.

That's like four cents, I guess.
