Perhaps because a large part of it *is* physics? Not to get too much into the Jeff Mills debate itself, but I think Mills (perhaps more than a lot of other artists) realizes how intertwined music and physics are: after all, sound is a wave that obeys the laws of physics and similarly, the process of cutting a vinyl release and playing it back is heavily influenced by the physics governing it. Knowing a little bit of the physics behind music and vinyl can only improve how well you're able to translate what's in your head into a real track and a piece of vinyl. Some examples of how the physics affect the music: the closer you get to the centre of a record, the more high end you will lose in the sound; the shorter a track, the more space you have on the record to accommodate the sidewards movement of the groove and the louder it can be cut; sawtooth(-like) waves or spikes in the sound cannot be cut properly on vinyl, they only work well on CD; etc. etc. More detailed info: http://www.acousticsounds.com/acoustic/acoustech/records.html http://www.aardvarkmastering.com/cutspec.htm and I'm sure there's plenty of sound experts on the list who can chime in on this. Re: [313] simple axis 9x-question
I certainly don't worship him, but I do think Jeff Mills, at his best moments, makes some great records. Some of his tracks don't do much for me though, I find he is hit or miss. What I would say, is that I think more than anyone else, Jeff Mills writes tracks that are extremely dramatic and dynamic, which is not a quality that is particularly common in techno. His discourse may lack a certain intellecualt rigor, but I think he nevertheless qualifies as an artist as opposed to someone who is only an entertainer. I think perhaps some are offended that he presents himself as an artist, but I don't have a problem with it, I personally wish more people would be willing to discuss techno as an art form rather than just entertainment. /dave :P wrote: for the music he makes, Jeff Mills sure makes himself sound like he does something intellectual or complex. there is a lot of much much better music out there, why does everyone worship the guy who tries to make 4/4 techno sound like physics? dont answer that, I already know the answer. - Original Message - From: Sakari Karipuro [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Tuesday, July 16, 2002 5:17 AM Subject: Re: [313] simple axis 9x-question [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote on Tue, 16 Jul 2002 about following: On Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at 12:59 AM, Sakari Karipuro wrote: [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote on Mon, 15 Jul 2002 about following: originally released version does have a kick and appears on the The Other Day comp. [313] laptop music makers: problems and more problems
Hi techies, Based on some advice I received on this list, a few months ago I bought a Dell Inspiron 4100 (i gig pentium processor, 128 meg ram running Win 2K) PC laptop to do music with. Only now have I started to kit it out to do music. I thought that I would get a USB box for audio because they're cheap. First I got a Midiman Quattro (audio+midi) which didn't work in the way it was supposed to (driver problems) so I sent that back and got an Edirol UA-5 and a Midiman 2x2. The midiman box didn't work (my laptop certainly doesn't like Midiman...) and the recording on the Edirol is full of pops and noise and I've fiddled with it for ages with no resolution of the problems. Has anyone else experienced problems like this? When I spoke to the shop that I got these bits from, they told me that they have a lot of trouble with PC laptops and have known issues with many of these USB boxes. I think that I have two options: either get a PCMCIA card for the machine that I have (more expensive, possibly becoming obsolete? but more reliable than USB) or just get a Mac and start making music instead of playing around with control panels and audio settings. Ahh What do you think? Regards, Al - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [313] laptop music makers: problems and more problems
you need to install your OS without ACPI, and then do some backround services optimizations for audio I would recommend XP as your OS of choise for audio. www.musicxp.net has some good tweak info and I can help you beyond that if you have questions. Im able to get 4ms latency at 96khz/24bit on my xp PC with 1ghz p3 and 512 megs of ram. Im using the delta 2496 -Joe - Original Message - From: Al Jones [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Tuesday, July 16, 2002 3:03 PM Subject: [313] laptop music makers: problems and more problems Hi techies, Based on some advice I received on this list, a few months ago I bought a Dell Inspiron 4100 (i gig pentium processor, 128 meg ram running Win 2K) PC laptop to do music with. Re: [313] laptop music makers: problems and more problems
Mac. I use both windows machines and macs and have found that macs work better for me for music and pc's work better for web/email and spread sheets etc. this is fine with me I'm famuliar with both system and I am able to keep all the added crap off my mac so it's just for audio (pro tools, live, cubase). I would get a g3 ibook something make sure it has a 100 mhz bus, the pismo and marble models have that bus speed, the pismo being the best bargin right now around $800 for a 466 mhz on ebay. I know lots of people use pc's to make music and they do it with success. but I always notice thay have lots driver/hardware conflicts, i've_never_had_a_problem_driver or hardware related with my mac and I use the midiman usb 2x2. can't say that for the pc and yes I have used it with that machine. scotto I don't use a screw driver to loosen bolts, I get a wrench. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[313] studio WAS: simple axis9 question
One axis release has got a girl saying ...recorded in spider formation chicago before the track. . Must been a studio then, d been one of my favorite mills tracks for quite a while... a lot longer than the 009(b) series has been out. he did say with the release of the 009 series that this is stuff he's had around for a good while, etc... i once read that Spider Formation was the name (pet or otherwise) of his studio. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [313] laptop music makers: problems and more problems
there are no problems once someone tells you to install without ACPI or to disable it. both have their uses, but telling someone that just bought a laptop to get a g3 doesnt make much sense if you're aiming to solve the problem with any efficiency :) as I said, I'll help if I can, off -list of course. -Joe - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Tuesday, July 16, 2002 3:27 PM Subject: Re: [313] laptop music makers: problems and more problems Mac. Re: [313] laptop music makers: problems and more problems
maybe you should reread his orignal post. he asked about mac's, so I answered his question. snip snip or just get a Mac and start making music instead of playing around with control panels and audio settings. end the snip it's not like I'm biased against pc's, they have there purpose, hell this letter is being composed on one - Original Message - From: :P [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 313@hyperreal.org both have their uses, but telling someone that just bought a laptop to get a g3 doesnt make much sense if you're aiming to solve the problem with any efficiency :) - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
