Re: [313] can you post this to the 313 list... ?

2002-08-14 Thread David Powers
Okay, well I have to ask, how many of us have 12s with uncredited
samples? Probably almost everyone here. I think there is some slight
hypocrisy in making the Beastie Boys bad guys cus they are rich and Mr.
Newton a good guy cus he claims he might go bankrupt. The Beastie Boys
usually use samples in a fairly original way, and they haven't broken
the law, according to the US court system. So, outside of some alien
ethical standard (and capitalism is certainly not ethical), how can one
judge that Beastie Boys are doing something which is somehow wrong? I
really fail to see how a six second flute sample represents some horrid
stealing of Mr. Newton's property. I think restrictions on samples
should actually be loosened, that would only benefit the electronic
music community, as many producers excel in the creative use of
sampling. As for the ones who excel at Not-so-creative sampling, and
make a lot of money, I don't see what can be done, make quality material
and don't worry about how rich pop musicians are getting. If you want
to sell out, just sell out, but don't expect to get rich as an artist in
some little niche genre that most people don't get.

The bottom line is, if there is a bad guy in this case, it is the big
record labels, but what's new about that? I doubt the Beastie Boys are
directly involved in this, besides when they originally sampled the song
years ago, and as for Mr. Newton, the Beastie Boys apparently contacted
HIS record label. So was it unethical for Mr. Newton's label to give
permission? Maybe, but then again, isn't that the reason for owning
your label, your own recordings and recording right, and all aspects of
it? Because we all know the major labels don't have artists interests
at heart. I'd say that techno is about being strong and self-reliant,
building a following, finding ways to survive. NOT about expecting to
win within the mainstream system (esp. the courts) where we know the
game is not balanced in favor of independants and small players. It
would be nice to change things to be more equitable, but for now we live
in a corporate-capitalistic system, it seems like any idea of some more
FAIR or JUST situation would have to imply some kind of change.
Complaining that the Beastie Boys are stealing within the current
system is somewhat misleading. It is the job of the courts to decide
what is stealing in this cases and apparently they have decided.

Okay, if you are still interested in hearing more of my opinion,
following are some more comments related to Mr. Prince's post.

Actually playing music IS manual labor. I know, I do it for a living.
Hauling around gear and setting up equipment is not fun, it is
definitely manual labor, but that's what being a musician IS. Skilled
labor. Live performance, not just the production of a round little
commodity that people can play in their homes. This is how musicians
have typically survived; the idea of a musician who creates music and
doesn't perform is relatively new, really something that probably
developed this century (and composers often conduct their works even if
the don't play instruments per se.) Only in our advanced capitalistic
system with its extreme division of labor would the idea of a
non-performing musician come up.

I By the way. I write classical new music (string quartets, tangos,
etc.) and I don't expect to make money on royalties (ASCAP seems like a
joke if you aren't some big name). I don't think you can expect to make
much money doing that kind of serious creation. It is nice if artists
can find ways to make money, but I don't believe our economic system is
very conducive to this. I often arrange pieces for big bands or other
ensembles, this isn't manual labor, but I don't charge for the idea
behind what I'm arranging (it isn't my pieces) I charge for the time and
effort i put in to making an arrangement that fits people's needs. That
is still LABOR (although not manual). The rights of performance and
royalty still go to the original composer which the performing group has
to take care of. As for original music, the primary ways to make money
would be to sell my own CDs, (not expect to make a living off of
royalties on CDs someone else sells), sell scores, write original music
on commision, and perform or direct performances of my own works. Only
if I am enough of a business person to sell my own scores or CDs, which
are actual physical commodities, do I really feel I am being paid for
something other than my labor.

I wouldn't venture to make the comparison to visual art, I think it's
inherently a different medium and has rather different issues involved.
However, I would venture to say that the value of a painting at least
has a connection with the fact that it took some type of skilled labor
to create it.

I view music in exactly the same way that I view visual art, perhaps
because my exposure to techno didn't come in the form of performance,
it came in the form of recordings. I have, since highschool, spent at
least $10,000 US on techno recordings, because they had ideas that I
thought were worth something, in the same way that I think the ideas
in a good book are worth something. The artist need not be present to
entertain me . . .

I'm not in a region where I can just pop down to a pub and hear an
innovative electronic act any more that I can just pop down to Japan to
watch Kishiro draw Gunnm . . .

Creativity is creativity, whether its recorded or performed . . . I
refuse to believe that the recorded version of an idea should be
unprotected and worth only the media its inscribed upon, which is
essentially what Mr. Cox was suggesting (and the only reason I'm
replying to the thread).

I am not part of a hive-mind, throwing my dreams into the communal pot
for random idiots to molest at will . . . that, to me, is the
antithesis of individuality.

I suppose I just don't understand how an artist could be so
disconnected from his work . . . for me, my art is another internal

[313] Fwd: Even Furthur un-announcement

2002-08-14 Thread Amy Clark

Drop Bass Network email news and update
August 13, 2002

http://www.dropbass.net
.

The saying goes that no news is good news. So when you finally get
news there's the chance it could be bad. Well, we have some news to
announce. And unfortunately it is bad news...

After eight annual years of going Even Furthur with all of our
friends from the Midwest and beyond it is with a great amount of
disappointment that we are announcing this years techno campout -
electric festival - family re*union will not be happening.

Long story short...we couldn't get it together. During the planning
process the negatives kept outweighing the positives and in the end
it just wasn't meant to be.

Understandably we realize that many of you, most of you, or maybe
even all of you are going to be let down and for that we apologize.
No one is more bummed out about this than us. We know how you feel.

We also apologize for taking so long to make this un-announcement.
We kept giving ourselves more time to make things happen, but
nothing was really working out. At this point there just isn't
enough time to organize a quality event. We have no choice other
than to not do the festival this year.

We know you've already asked off from work over Labor Day weekend
and made plans to be with your friends in a field somewhere in
Wisconsin, but we've left you high and dry. What do we recommend?
One of the most important aspects of Even Furthur is that everyone
gets to go camping with their current and future friends. We hope
people still keep that part of the weekend tradition alive. Maybe
even add a sound system to your campout.

The absence of Even Furthur this year doesn't mean that the festival
is dead. Far from it! Our plan and our promise is to put our heads
down and concentrate on this and only this event for 2003. We may or
may not have an occasional one off event here and there, but our
main focus will be on this festival. Even Furthur is the most
important thing we do and it's what we want to be known for. Well,
that and evil. ;) It's strange the two don't necessarily go together
so well?

We never imagined a year without Even Furthur. We didn't want to!
But now we have to. Life will probably go on just fine without it
for a year. Hopefully it means we will celebrate and let our freak
flags fly even more at next years festival. You better be ready!

In the words of Jerry Garcia, It ain't over until the fat lady gets high!

We'll see you all back on the bus again next year.

The fact that Even Furthur is not happening deserves a good
explanation. Warning: it's long winded. If you don't want to read a
lot you should stop here.

Top ten reasons why there won't be an Even Furthur this year...

1. Motivation : Lets face it, the rave scene has taken a huge hit in
attendance over the past year. Even the club scene has slowed down.
We could go on and on with numerous reasons and speculations for
this. No one thing is to blame.

There have been slow times before, but nothing like this year. We
were as convinced as most fellow promoters that things were dead.
Not completely, but close. We went as far as trying monthly events
for Chirst's sake to see if things would wake up. They didn't. Even
though we were extremely excited about our ten year anniversary
event, we also believed it was going to be another one in the long
line of failed events promoters were experiencing in 2002. We're
glad to say that wasn't the case. But because we thought it was
going to be the straw that broke the camels back (our back), at the
time we didn't put a lot of effort into planning anything for the
future. Including Even Furthur. We figured there wasn't a point.

While we were trying to figure everything else out though we missed
the boat. Something like Furthur does matter and it transcends the
normal rave scene. There was a point to this event and it needed to
happen. Once we were out of gloom and doom mode there wasn't a lot
of time to make the festival a reality. We've done it in short
amounts of time in the past, so who was to say that we couldn't do
it that way again? Things just didn't fall into place though (see
other explanations below).

The strong will survive. The promoters and the music lovers who are
left standing after everything is said and done are the ones who
were truly into it from the get go. Which was the case back in the
old days. The music was first, the party second. We've always
yearned for that feeling or vibe from those days and it looks like
it could be just around the corner again. At least we hope so.

2. The RAVE Act S.2633 : Once we got over the lack of motivation
problem this damn thing came along. We've faced numerous attacks on
our culture over the years, but this one seems very very serious. It
expands the crack house statute to allow the federal government to
fine

I love house (my record collection is nearly all house) I'm just trying

The thing is I don't like too many vocals and prefer good beats and catchy

Are there any KDJ records that I could buy that would fit in with that

AKUFEN CONFIRMED FOR 'SIZZLER 02' PARTY - 30/08/02

Montreal's Akufen (Marc Leclair) makes a very welcome return to London on
Friday 30th of August. Marc made his UK live debut at Fabric earlier this
Summer, which saw the main room crowd going ape to his stomping butchered
samplefest. Whilst the more perceptive punter may have already been savvy to
his unique sound, his profile in this country has gone from strength to
strength since this initial appearance - owing to the release of his
massively acclaimed 'My Way' album, which has earned him a 'Best Newcomer'
nomination at this year's Muzik magazine Awards. Many people have enquired
as to when Akufen will be performing again in London, so I'm pleased to
announce this exclusive appearance. Check the details:

Sizzler 02: The Homecoming

Guys and Gals, hot damn, Rizla and Wall of Sound have travelled throughout
the summer spreading the word of Sizzler far and wide.

At Glastonbury we kicked some ass in the Rizla Café with Full Cycle, then we
jumped back on the bus (okay.plane, it's a long way you know) and headed for
Scotland.
The tickets in Glasgow had gone in record time. It took only 6 days for 1500
to be snatched up. Might have had something to do with the presence of
Jacques Lu Cont on the line-up me thinks.
So Scotland was bonnie and Glastonbury was.well.just beautiful.man.

So now Ladies and Gents we return triumphantly on August 30th to London's
Brick Lane. Mullet land. Home of the daft. And to celebrate we are rollin'
into town on the Ho Down trail. Prepare yo'self for some genune Deep
South shenanigans.

Classic and Illicit will be joining us and the Wall of Sound boys, to bring
you the best from London's independent record labels. You can expect deep
dirty house, hippity hip-hop and in the We Love You Loft, well.anything
really. It should keep you kickin' up yo' heels through the night.

In the Main Room
Luke Solomon Kenny Hawkes - West London Deep - Tiefschwarz
Trainer Boy very special guest Akufen (live)

In the Bad Magic Bar (Hosted by Tony Rotton a.k.a. Blak Twang)
Big Ted (Blak Twang) - Andy Smith (Dynamo Productions) - Plagiawrists -
Jadell

In the We Love You Loft
Deadly Avenger - The Visitor - Boogie Knights

Yee haw indeedy, there will be apple bobbin', a gratis Cajun Occasion BBQ,
and hell, lets go crazy.free ice cream for all. Yes, 93 Feet East is the
place to be, and we are comin' home momma. Think Dukes of Hazard. Think
hick. Think the ultimate in redneck extravaganzas. Get yo' dungarees on and
hot step it to the final Sizzler 02.

The dress code is Hillbilly Hell. Make an effort or we'll set Mark Jones on
ya.

And the best bit.hot diggity dmn. ITS FREE.

Sizzler 02: The Homecoming, 30th August 02, 8pm - 2am, 93 Feet East, London

Tickets will be available from Rough Trade Neals Yard WC2H, Rough Trade

Oh please the Jaguar case was completely different!

Sonny wanted to license Th Jaguar from UR, send multiple faxes to UR and UR
told Sonny that they where not interested in a deal with Sonny. So Sonny
just coppied the whole track and released it with a lot of references to
Jaguar, they stole the complete track after they could not get the original
track, Beasty Boys just sampled 6 seconds from a track, how many House and
Techno artist don't sample 6 seconds and loop them i think the list is about
endless

this is true.. The Jaguar sample was not asked for by Sony, so
would this be classed also as a free piece of music to have?

[313] DeepHeatDetroit

2002-08-14 Thread sean deason
forwarded message:

THE END OF AN ERA

DeepHeatDetroit
(2000-2002)

Once upon a time, in a non-city known for automobiles, motown, urban decay,
and electronic music, one of many small humble independent establishments
opened its doors from its unassuming spot in the old Irish village of
Corktown to a subculture of dance addicts.

One night a week this tiny family-run Irish pub grill transformed in a
matter of a few short hours into one of the hottest, yet most intimate House
music clubs to get you through the week. Pretentious did not exist.
There was a dress code: it was called: comfy. There was an atmosphere: it
was called: welcome. There was a temperature: it was called: warm - er - no
- well, the walls were sweating!

Intimate it was on the 15'x15' (if that) dancefloor. The cover and drink
specials were so great that affordable was an understatement. Oh, let's
not forget the icing on the cake (often literally) - free food! Summers
offered a cinderblock-enclosed backdoor patio with tiki bar that somehow
contradicted itself, yet did the trick.

Everybody knew everybody - and if you didn't, you soon would.

These Wednesdays saw heard the likes of guest vinylizers such as Boo
Williams,
Glen Underground, Alton Miller, Terrence Parker, Mike Clark, Mike Grant,
Norm Talley, Delano Smith, Reggie Dokes, Rick Wilhite, Kenny Dixon Jr, Theo
Parrish, Dwayne Jensen, D.Wynn, LA Williams, Minx, Al Ester, Reggie Harrell,
Seoul, Korie, Genesis, Shortround, Steve Crawford, and many, many, many
more...

And the live percussion! Open jams with congas, djemes, and other
instruments generously provided by one or two consistent people. And the
brief breakdance capoiera breakouts! Some of the best dancers in the
city! And sometimes, sometimes someone would grab the mic and sing!

(and if the police gave tickets for loitering after-hours on Michigan
Ave...)

Then, but two months after the second anniversary, it was time to roam.

Short-lived, yes - but yet another chapter in the book of Detroit cultural
history.

And I would never, ever trade moments like these for any giant, stuffy club.

These constants are what makes Detroit music and dance culture so
distinctive.

DeepHeatDetroit Wednesdays at The Lager House
were made possible by:

T. Weston

Please join DeepHeatDetroit in our final night of sweat:

Wednesday, August 14th
9pm-2am?

$5 cover

the usual $1 PBRs, etc

eats

beats

booty-shakin'

Re: [313] can you post this to the 313 list... ?

2002-08-14 Thread Michael Lees
Again I'll emphasise the point. Numan didn't mind them reusing his work
because he was given credit and more than likely it'd increase his
sales. I've lost count of the number of posts on here where people will
ask about where a certain sample came from and then go and buy the
original? I know I've done that before. It's not just about getting
money for the actual use of the sample but having your name printed on
the record/CD. Publicity if you like.

That's the issue here I think, not whether you should be allowed to
sample or not.

Re: [313] KDJ

2002-08-14 Thread Gary . Girard

I didn't explain myself well.

I love house (my record collection is nearly all house) I'm just trying
to find out from this list if there are any KDJ records out there for me.
The thing is I don't like too many vocals and prefer good beats and catchy
melodies - the sort of stuff on Classic - Derrick Carter DJ Sneak are
good examples.
Are there any KDJ records that I could buy that would fit in with that
sort of sound?

To simplify even further ...

Pls recommend me good dance floor KDJ records (the more up-tempo ones
without soulful vocals)

Thanks.

[313] KDJ dj-ing platter

2002-08-14 Thread Jason Donnelly
need some help here people, looking for a track KDJ has been know to play
out, tired all the local sources here and came up with nothing, alI I can
offer are written vocals:

So there
You got me in your clutch again,
So there, So there,
I love your touch, that voodoo you do so well,
Got me spinning around,
Let me in your world,
Let me in your world for awhile

So there
You got me in your clutch again
So there, so there
I love your touch, that voodoo you do so well,
Got me spinning around,
Let me in your world,
Let me in your world for awhile

missing segment here

You drive me crazy
You make me go insane for you baby *Track really kicks in here, big
electric guitar**

Oh no you got me going crazy for you baby
Oh no you make me go insane for you baby

*Then sing without words, wouldn't know how to even begin typing this*

that's all I've got folks!

nearest 'ballpark' comparison would be sort of like Moloko - 'Sing it Back'
vocal, i.e. very low, restrained female lead vocal, definitely not a
'modern' song, thinking late 70's/ early 80's, although could be totally wrong!

anyone?

and does anyone know the George Clinton - Parliament/ Funkadelic track
played by KDJ and Theo Parrish (sure its on his DEMF 2000 set) with the
repeating line - While your in Brooklyn'???

AND FINALLY, was there ever a track listing of Kenny and Theo's set's from
DEMF 2000 available on the web?? (anyone make one up for them self)?

please reply privately

thanks!

[313] Prescription page

2002-08-14 Thread Jonny McIntosh
Right, I've brought in all my Prescriptions and knocked up a quick page
which you can view at:

www.timetojack.org/prescription/

Let me know of any spelling errors or other problems.

I'm planning on scanning in labels later on, but our scanner is crap and our
design software pretty basic, so if anyone fancies giving it a shot, please
do. I'm aiming for jpegs 100 pixels wide, or thereabouts.

Tristan's offered to fill in the blanks in the list, so that'll be OK, but
if anyone has spare copies of the blanks, drop me a line.

Cheers,

Jonny

I'll do it if you want, I've got some free webspace and time. If anyone
wants to send me a copy of that Chuggles Nagual 12 to help complete the
set, that'd be good ;) But seriously, I'm happy to give it a shot. I'm not
doing much at work today except umm and ahh over whether I think Kevin
Yost
 is really cheesy.

CHILLIN' AT EASTNOR CASTLE - 16-18 AUGUST 2002
just thought some people might be interested - list-members
CiM and myself are performing, along with many other
quality acts, should be a great weekend...

Hey, I was going to try and cross the pond for this one to see you 2 plus the
other INCREDIBLE lineup! And I like the whole laid back kind of vibe. But the
flights were just way too expensive... I guess people actually WANT to visit
Ole Blighty in the summer! ;) But I do expect a full report to 313 when you
guys return.

Cheers and break a leg,
Matt

Can do but I don't think there's any 313 acts playing at the Big Chill this
year which is a shame. Detroit Escalator Company, Strand, Urban Tribe and
many others would fit nicely in I reckon.

[313] Akufen Live Mixes

From: Tom Robbins/Magic Feet [EMAIL PROTECTED]

There was some talk about Akufen on the list recently, so I thought this
might be of interest to London 313ers, once you wade through all the
blather. By the way, I reckon Akufen's remix of Cabaret Voltaire's 'Nag
 Nag
Nag' (out soon on Mute) is the remix of the year so far.

does anyone know of any live mixes of akufen on the net. streaming, mp3,
 what ever?

 scotto

 ps. on the CV note.
if anyone has a copy of tres mantras and there will to part with get with
me. went with that batch of evapirated (stolen) vinyl.

Well,
klubradio.de used to have two pretty good akufen sets, but they are no
longer offering free access to their entire archives.
I used to have a link to a text-archive page for klubradio that had all
of
their sets listed, so that you could just copy the link from the text page,
paste it in the address bar and listed to wnatever you wanted, but I lost
that :(
Anyone know if mutek plans on archiving any of their sets from this
year's
event?

I've got an mp3; Akufen live at E-Werk

it's pretty good, but I liked the set on klubradio better.

I'm a little low on server space right now but if someone's got some
temporary ftp space, I'm happy to share.
