I'll go for some old Chicago tracks that aren't *amazingly* obvious, but
leave aside modern stuff (I do think that Jeff Mills and Mad Mike are the
John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders of the TB303 though, as evidenced on
Seawolf and the Acid Rain series :) :

Six Brown Brothers City Hall
Dr Derelict That Sh*t's Wild
Lidell Townsell Feel The Mood
Mr Lee Never Gonna Change
Hokus Pokus Different World (*especially* this track!)
Mike 'Hitman' Wilson Bango Acid
JM Silk Music Is The Key
Maurice This is Acid
Hot Hanas Hula Hot Hands
The Porch Monkeys Hello Lover
and of course the tear-jerkingly poignant I Got A Big D*ck by Maurice

I am just trying to do a news item on the Vegas conference - does anyone
have the Web site for it? I had a crash a few months ago and had to
reinstall a lot of stuff and I lost my 'favourites' sites!

Also, does anyone have an update on whether it's still going ahead - it
sounds cool, but I haven't heard much about it on this list.

there are so so so many. but here are a couple of my all time favourite
chicago acid tracks--house master baldwin 'don't lead me' (future scope),
ace and the sandman 'let your body talk'(saber), phortune 'feel the bass'
(hot mix 5), the poke (mike dunn's your turn to work it mix), laurent x
'machines'. marshall jefferson 'do the do'(dj international?)

some early 90s, non chicago acid--mike ink 'house arrest' on the we call it
acid e.p. (force inc), count zero[richard h kirk] 'silent prayer' (ozone).

for those in sydney, i'll be playing some, if not all, of these tracks
tonight at teknikal at chinese laundry.

if it wasn't 22c (74f) and not a cloud in the sky i'd make the list longer.
but i'm off to sit in the bushland by the sea and look for fairy penguins.

The last one was a
month ago, this is the first time Lost parties have been a month apart for
maybe 6 or 7 years ...

I for one am not complaining! I'm getting old and the more they pack in the
better fr my point of view! ;o)

Thanks for the low down on CC Max. I'll be sure not to miss him again. The
dilemma of that weekend (of cost/or events at the same time) was a nice one
to have though!

... Techno ( roots of other kinds as Garnier said) have taken off in
London (again) which is quite astonishing really - but nobody would book it
if it didn't sell would they?

I hear that at the same time as Lost next month, Vladislav Delay will be
playing at the Tate Modern. I mean, what?!? Is good taste really back in!
And really, the year hasn't seen the end of the legendary names according to
my little soundings.

So see u around Max!

2002-08-30 Thread Odeluga, Ken
Right. We all know detroit music is amazing yeah?
Just existing as a producer in detroit means you are living on a higher
musical plane than the rest of us fools yeah?
These detroit guys have an understanding of electronic music way above the
rest of us?
... (goes on like this, somewhat ad nauseum.)

Points:

*I don't hear anyone complaining about the 'Berlin' scene, which is to me
equally (over?) revered.

*As ever the maxim 'If you don't like it, don't buy it' will lead you to
wisdom - I hope nobody's got a gun to anybody's head forcing them to
buy/listen.

*In the US, much music from 'London' ( the UK in general) is just as much
(over?) revered and expensive. Ask anyone on this list about tracking down
the 4 Hero LP, and about how much it costed.

*Basically, the argument is sterile on 313! Unsubscribe all Detroit haters!

sorry if I have gone off on one but the uk pees me off with the lack of
Techno, the only thing coming to London that is new is the Marco

It's interesting that people should say this about the uk techno scene.
Maybe the problem is not only with the promoters but with the people who
support the scene. I mean, the line up for the Signal night was amazing. And
the music at the actual night was so superb and interesting that I had to
keep on running backwards and forwards between the two rooms.
Not only did the night have the drawcard of Juan (fantastic track selection
and good mixing too!), but all the other artists featured were worth going
to hear on their own merits.
Yet nearly every techno listener i know on this list and in the rest of
London chose to go to Lost. Why? I like Jeff Mills too but we've all seen
him play loads of times at Lost and Lost has also not been really special
for a long time. It's huge and crowded, Steve Bicknell always provides 3hrs
of torturously boring music and we've had a full 10 years of it!
Put your money where your mouth is and attend something different and not
just the same old stuff which you complain about cause it's the same old
stuff :)

I am gonna stand me ground here and say a few things about Lost.

Dru Kru- me personally would like to watch paint dry.

the venue was too small for Jeff, but good for the Colin 's. I could not
stand Tanaka set. He did not realise that his third deck tone arm had gone
but
he continued to mix on it and it kept jumping, why he did not run with two
decks , heaven knows!
but even then his mixing was not impressive. If he got paid more than £400
they need to get there
money back!

Sound system was ok and got better when Jeff came on. I think Jeff's set was
great, a
good broad range of music through the years.

Colin Dale (as I and I am sorry to say this, cannot stand Bicknell's mixing,
so opted for Colin) was superb!like
you say, very housey but on form, not taking to many risks but better than
Tanaka and Bicknell anyday.

Mills is back too soon to LOST for Light sound thingy..Bring back RUSH I
say as he is always welcome in
my book and he hasn't been there for a while. ALso why don't they get some
home-grown talent.

I feel that they really do miss out on the talent that is about,
particularly John Kennedy and Arthur Smith. Ok I know
these guys but John can never say he plays at LOST cos of copyright stuff.
And why they never book Arthur of Grain , I mean the guy on three decks
would piss on Tanaka..man LOST wanna not become to stagnant in their

Don't be shocked. It's preference, i was just telling you mine and i don't
expect you to make assumptions on how narrow or open minded i am.
Sure we don't have the same vision for a night but that doesn't mean that
people who want something different to you are not receptive to other stuff.
I certaintly attend a lot of things and give most nights a chance.
And yes, there is a lot of european techno that is great, the music from
Germany at Signal was superb, last night i was at a UK electro night also
listening to amazing music, etc, etc. But detroit is my first
loveit's why i'm on this list and not some other.
I hope you understand a little better where i'm coming from and it doesn't
have to be the same place as you :)
Oh, also wanted to add. That in talking about Lost yesterday, i forgot to
mention that i think Lost has done a great job these 10 years in
consistantly supporting 313 artists and have really helped the London scene
to grow and maintain itself. I just don't think it's the *only* thing
around.
And yes you are right, Ken, there is room at Lost and other nights for all
sorts of techno and if one looks at Lost lineups, it has always been this
way.

sorry if I have gone off on one but the uk pees me off with the lack of
Techno, the only thing coming to London that is new is the Marco
Carola..thank god for a new nite and some exciting prospects but shame

Put your money where your mouth is and attend something different and not
just the same old stuff which you complain about cause it's the same old
stuff :)

I think what's important is that we are seeing greater variety of both live
acts and DJs in London (perhaps in certain other parts of the UK as well) -
plus certain promoters and parties are merging house techno acts back
together with some success - something which has been missing for a
considerable period of time. You've only to go to something like Open to
Torture to see the soulless side of the scene.

House Of God, Atomic Jam in Birmingham? Voodoo (now Electrovoodoo) in
Liverpool? The Orbit in Leeds? I-Funk in Manchester? Pressure, Monox and
countless others in Scotland? There's plenty of big techno nights around
the
country, not to mention the smaller DIY nights and free parties (it's not
all acid trance). There's plenty of techno to be heard - you've just got to
make an effort to hear it sometimes.

RE: [313] Lost Weekend

2002-08-30 Thread Simon Walley

so yor happy to take in just Detriot techno but no other techno??

I totally am. I tend to dislike techno clubs where the Detroit vs. rest of
the world mix is anything less than 70/30.

thats seems unreal that you can be soo blinkered in your
view on Techno..I thought the whole point of loving techno would open you
to

other things..

Most Euro/UK techno nights I've been to are *the* most blinkered in terms of
'other things'. It's the Detroit jocks I've found who quite happily throw in
stuff from other genres/styles. Thats why I prefer nights that have a 313
relevance/predominance - they tend to have more of the unexpected to them.

I guess thats why the uk scene is not well supported when ohters try to do
things, if there are more
uk 313 who have this view please speak cos this has defo shocked me.

I always thought I was atypical - so its encouraging to know I'm not the
only one :)

Because banging dance music is not, and never will be techno.

Techno is unfortunately a dirty word. I like techno, I don't like
 monotonous rubbish.

funny you should say this as i went to creamfields this w/e (for those in
the US it's a big, mostly soulless commercial festival where people go to
get rained on) and whilst i liked what people like umek were playing i
can't beleive that people like that think a set of dj tools and nothing
else is acceptable.

this gives techno a bad name.

Don't attempt to redefine it because it doesn't fit in with your very
narrow
ideas of what you expect from it.

i think the point is the exact opposite to the above, most techno nites
are happy to have a dj use looped tools _all_ nite in one long bangathon. this
puts people off techno (me included).

this is not a detroit versus uk vs euro thing either (to keep on
topic, 313 djs that i've seen play techno from all over) this is an
imagination thing and most techno djs that i see fail on that count.

House Of God, Atomic Jam in Birmingham? Voodoo (now Electrovoodoo) in
Liverpool? The Orbit in Leeds? I-Funk in Manchester? Pressure, Monox and
countless others in Scotland? There's plenty of big techno nights around
 the
country, not to mention the smaller DIY nights and free parties (it's
not
all acid trance). There's plenty of techno to be heard - you've just got
to
make an effort to hear it sometimes.

After looking over all of these, it reminded me just how ahead of their time
these records were, particularly the Steve Patton and Sensurreal records on
OpArt, which prefigure the broken beat sounds of today IMHO.

To make the connection even more explicit: check Amplified Orchestra -
'Silver Lining' on 4Lux, the new label run by Gerd, one half of Sensurreal
(distributed by Clone: www.clone.nl in case you have trouble finding it).
Great broken beat and deephouse.

And everyone needs to own at least one copy of Gerd's brilliant album on
Universal Language 'This Touch Is Greater Than Moods' from back in '97, but
that's of course just my humble opinion :)

[313] let no man put asunder

2002-08-30 Thread Maarten Baute
I found this RAMS HORN release.. with 2 sides..

A side has 3 tracks (all by shep petibone)
B side contains two tracks... not a lot of info on there

the B-side should be the frankie knuckles mix, right?
Does it contain a sax (or something that sounds like that)?

Thanks,
Maarten

Alex BondBecause banging dance music is not, and never will be techno.
Techno is unfortunately a dirty word. I like techno, I don't like

... Well, to be fair, 'banging dance music' is what the type of techno which
we all remember (e.g. 'It Is What It Is') eventually became. Change happens.
We might like to revision history but, it's not wise when it's staring a man
in the face!

I bought some '94-issue Generator last week: Passarani, Jackson, Deason and
of course Oldham. Sweet, sweet tunes and a housey feel a-la Fowlkes.
Fast-forward 5 years and what are Passarani and Oldham doing? Razor-sharp
high-pitched noises overlaid over a compressed kick! Same artists - and I'm
sure it would be still techno according to them.

I for one am not winging though - when I look around and see the diversity,
fertility (steady on!) of this music (inlcuding EVERYTHING) I don't see any
reason to be bored at all.

[313] was help?

2002-08-30 Thread Chris Dooley
i found www.agnitum.com
and the little thing called outpost. seems much better than zone alarm.
also why do u use startup editor? you can just go under run and put in
msconfig and do it yourself? no need for another program.

i actually was checking around and found this loadqm.exe?
seems like some kind of program that keeps connecting to the ms site or
something?
my comp will be sitting still and i will notice that it starts working out of
nowhere so i alt/ctl/delete and there it was?
seems something to do with msn im or windows update or something.
ms are some sneaky bastards! worse than spyware. it is private control ware.

i am still unsure what qtmtask is?

in any case i also went to infopackets.com and went back down to the player
6.4.

though i wish someone out there knew how to get rid of this spy update?
when you go to the windows update part of the site and check what is installed
on your comp, it seems that with this so called security update install, along
with many other recent ones, they all are incapable of being uninstalled in any
way. check for yourself.
especially under the recent critical updates under Read first? looks like
some kind of reporting on what you are listening to and what you are watching
on media player, along with trying to have something that automatically updates
all ms updates.
i know someone may know of some discussion room where this may be discussed if
you are sick of it here and are unsure. and for the mac users who are probably
saying, get a mac and shut up.

peace

yes i installed the new media player along with explorer 6 a month or so ago
for the computer that runs 98se, that i use for internet, downloads, and
various odd jobs.

do u know how one might do that similiar function in 98se?
also would uninstalling media player work and then just stripping it's
program folder of all its contents? or does it hide this somewhere lse in
the registry or in the windows folder?
i have spoke with many people and noone has a clue.

Darren Longton (Merch) [EMAIL PROTECTED] 08/29/02 03:26PM

You already did that on 98se?

cause 98 does have a similar function...just not as easy to use.

2002-08-30 Thread Odeluga, Ken
I know the one! Doesn't sound like 'Strings ...' to me Wibo. But as you
mention it, I shall try 'em both out together tonight.

Thing about Red Passion is that there isn't much development beyond the
strings and the Minimal Master's subliminal tweaks, but 'Strings ...' is a
real 'track' - I mean with changes, stops, etc.

Whilst we're on the subject: Duet, Red Passion, Floorplan - Any one seen
anything new on these imprints please?

BTW Alex, I've noticed you like Rob Hood, but he's pretty 'bangin' ta me!

hi there

managed to track down a copy of the classic Throbbing Gristle LP, was
thinking about transferring it to cd, so obviously I would like to get the
best possible copy, does anyone know which solvents clean vinyl up the
best, and which solvents to avoid (would rather not melt the vinyl!). Work
in lab, so access to various solvents.

nice to see the 313 producing interesting and informative threads, one
request, for all us digest users, could everyone not resend the entire

[313] cleaning vinyl/ unwarping vinyl

2002-08-30 Thread Pond, Quest
On a slightly related subject. I have a few nice records that are badly
warped. I have heard 2 myths on how to unwarp them in the past. One was to
shrink wrap them and the other to place them in between 2 sheets of glass
and leave them in the sun for a specified time.

Has anyone tried these methods and has more details or maybe a better way?

Thanks.

 hi there

managed to track down a copy of the classic Throbbing Gristle LP, was

vinyl up the
best, and which solvents to avoid (would rather not melt the

Here's a description of Gruv-Glide.

http://www.amusicdirect.com/products/detail.asp?sku=AGRUVGL

Doing a google search will turn up more descriptions like this. Not sure
about 'greasy grime'. You want to avoid anything that will also eat away at
the vinyl though. In some cases the grime may be less detrimental than the
solvent. I'd still try distilled water first and if it doesn't work track
down some gruv-glide - 2nd-hand record shops may stock it.

water contains different minerals that will stain your vinyl when it dries up.
soap and detergents might stain, too. distilled water or some pure alcohol are
probably the best.

Fast-forward 5 years and what are Passarani and Oldham doing?

Marco Passarani ha recently created a new label, Pigna Records, along with
Mat101/Jolly Music dudes Francesco De Bellis and Mario Pierro.

Musically i wouldn't describe his musica exactly the way you did, but he has
abandoned the more melancholy melodies of past, with his release as
Passarani 2099.
His dj-sets though are great - elektro, techno, detroit-tech all the way,
something for a discerning and learned public (which ironically doesnt
really exist here in rome).

He's got a lot of release coming out - you can catch the news on his site
www.finalfrontier.it . Each label has its own page with a news section.

There is a slight renaissance going on here in Rome.

I remember telling this list that I was not too impressed with transmat 29..
well.. now I had a good listen to it.. and I changed my thoughts.

I think that this is the best thing to come out on transmat since the 22
(microworld)... so it must be very good then IMO...
The B-side is somethinhat growes on you, and that the reason why I had to
mail this.

So give it a try.

I didn´t like those Stephen Brown ep´s actually.

[313] Questions for Carl Craig?

2002-08-30 Thread Tom Robbins/Magic Feet
I'm off to London village on Monday afternoon to interview Carl Craig.
Anyone got any pertinent questions for the man? I'll use as many as I can
and try and post up the interview transcript on the list.

Sorry to keep ab/using the list as my own personal research forum, but then
from past responses I get the impression people do enjoy suggesting things
like this.

BTW, the reason for this feature is his new double mix CD forthcoming on
React, 'The Workout', which no doubt listmembers Marsel, Otto and Fabrice
will be well aware of as he's licensed tracks from all three of them.
Haven't played it yet, but it looks pretty interesting and very broad, too,
with tracks from Jah Wobble, Gus Gus and Adult. in there amongst lots of
deep tech.

Thanks!

Yeah: which track of my label did he license? :)

BTW, the reason for this feature is his new double mix CD forthcoming on

I know that he licensed a Duplex track, i.e. the Fabrice Lig remix of
'Meta', for it, but that was released on Clone, not on Keynote/Ground Zero
(I released the 'Autosave' EP). Maybe that's the source of the confusion?

Anyway, one thing I'd like to hear his thoughts on is what he sees as the
lasting impact (if any) of DEMF for the city of Detroit and the techno
scene. Is it 'just' a great 3-day party once a year or has it done more?

Cheers,

Otto

I think this may have been asked, but I've heard there were plans in the
works for possible rival DEMF fest(s) even this year (one in Windsor, a
block party in Detroit, etc.). Is there any truth to the rumor(s) of other
festivals in/around Detroit and will C2 have any involvement if so (love to
see him play!).

RE: [313] cleaning vinyl

2002-08-30 Thread ani
i found a copy of no ufo's that had so much mildew it was almost
unrecognizable. i used a 1/10 solution of 90% isopropyl alcohol / distilled
water, and gentle rubbing with a clean cloth to clean both the vinyl and
label.

-alcohols (isopropyl/ethanol) seem to work well. like eyeglass cleaners
which use dilute solutions, so they're not as stripping *don't use full
strength alcohols*
-some people use plain water, but it won't remove greasy (nonpolar) dirt
-since acetone melts everything, avoid it even in dilute solutions
-some people ammonia glass cleaner (windex), but i avoid these
-gruv glide uses petroleum distillates, but i don't see many of those in the
lab

remember all you chemists out there: like dissolves like! ;)

for less dirty records, i use gruv glide, because it's not water based and
cleans light dirt (fingerprints, dust) without making the record wet.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure discwasher is just isopropyl. My dad had one
kit of it the whole time I was growing up, and I bought my own when I
moved out. Its just not a turntable without that little wooden brick
