The last LOST on August Bank Holiday saw London's techno mecca celebrate 10
years of parties in the capital with Jeff Mills and Fumiya Tanaka joining
resident Steve Bicknell for a roof raising success.

For the next event on 28th September we see LOST treading new territory with
Jeff Mills joining Steve Bicknell in the Red Room on a journey through sound
and vision. Steve Bicknell will open the night featuring excerpts from the
Kim Bilir project culminating in an interactive visual soundscape and Jeff
Mills will produce a richly woven fabric of sound and image featuring film
unlike any of his sets you have ever experienced. Having created some of the
most arresting and influential dance music during his career, take time to
expect the unexpected from Mr Mills. LOST dance floor DJ sets by Jeff and
Steve will also follow.

The Blue Room will open shortly after the Red followed by alternative DJ
sets from John, Alex Knight, Mario and Steve Stasis. The silent space

[313] Also on 28/9 in London - Vladislav Delay

2002-09-17 Thread Toby Frith
What with Carl Craig and Jeff Mills in town that night, it looks like a busy
night.

Saturday 28th of September, Starr Auditorium, 19.30 - Tate Modern

Vladislav Delay with Tennis and Rosy Parlane
Contemporary electronic music has emerged as one of the most pervasive forms
of experimental music of recent times. This event features performers who
use new technologies to create a uniquely digital sound. Vladislav Delay is
at the forefront of international electronic music. Part ambient, part
percussive, Delay's music is infused with an elegiac quality. Aural
fragments loop and overlay creating clouds of granular, occasionally
corrosive sonic textures. Delay also records and performs as Luomo. Tennis
exploit the dynamics of echo and delay to produce a sound which is both
ghostly and organic. They have toured Europe, playing on occasion with
Delay. Rosy Parlane produces full and intricate soundscapes which are
innately musical, involving and affecting. Parlane also runs the label Sigma
Editions, which released Vladislav Delay's first album, Ele.

A collaboration with Sprawl in association with the Finnish Institute

Tickets £6 (£3 concessions) Booking is recommended.

RE: [313] Fw: 28 SEPT. JEFF MILLS / STEVE BICKNELL...

2002-09-17 Thread Robert Taylor
He has been playing a little bit more of a wide range recently, but not much
At the last Lost he played stuff I'd never imagined him play, like Kings Of
Tomorrow and Laurent Garnier. His sets on Electronic Directory are extremely
eclectic (The Clash, Kyoto Jazz Massive), so we know he's capable of playing
more varied sets, but he seems happy trotting out the same old
Axis/Purposemaker records over and over again for the (for the most part)
unimaginative London techno crowd (well, specifically the Lost crowd).
He must be aware that there are a lot of broad-minded techno fans who will
welcome him branching out but I think maybe Lost jocks are intimidated into
playing safe sets. It happened with FK a couple of Losts ago. We were all
expecting a Body and Soul-type set embracing everything from Afrobeat to
Basic Channel but we got a pretty bog-standard FX heavy techno set. We
expect good DJs to challenge our expectations and constantly surprise us,
but that's not been happening with the like of Mills and Hawtin recently.
Lost should start booking some fresher DJs like Dave Tarrida and Surgeon,
even if it's just in a support slot 'cos the old school are beginning to
fail us.

Very good point.

Lost is getting full of techno drones who file into place and dance
religiously facing the dj.

Wanna go somewhere I can lose myself in a corner or a speaker... Lost ain't
that place..

I went to see mike dunn and armando there and they rocked... Had mark
broom playing downstairs afterwards and it was wikked...

'a change is as good as a rest..

Very dissapointed with f.k I kmew he wasn't going to body and sould esque
but he was just banging aprt from 4 or 5 toons...

I used to go to Lost to be challenged. As P Dircon has pointed out, they
used to book DJs like Mike Dunn and Mark Broom. One particular party springs
to mind - the Axis party with Mills and Hood in 95 (I think). That was a
real eye-opener, but I haven't heard sets liek that from either Hood or

[313] 313ers DJing in London this weekend

2002-09-17 Thread Brendan Nelson
As well as the bleep43 night at Public Life on Saturday, there is another
opportunity to catch 313 subscribers on the ones and twos this weekend!

I'm playing at WIDE - London's only true booty/ghetto-tech/electro night -
at District this Friday 20th September. Joining me will be another London
313er (albeit a slightly more quiet one), Guy Thackeray. Entry to the night
is free before 10pm, so if you're up for being 'challenged and constantly
surprised' then head out to Hackney Central for a night of good
Detroit-centric music with 4/4 bangers kept to a minimum!

The details:

Time: 8pm-1am
Address: 19 Amhurst Road, Hackney (right next to Hackney Central train
station, and just round the corner from Hackney Downs)
Cost: Free before 10pm, probably free afterwards as well (just say I know
Brendan or I'm on 313!)
Music: Accelerated funk
URL: http://www.wideadventure.com/djs.asp
Contact #: call Brendan on 07968 063410

Sorry for the self-promotion!

Brendan

[313] Has Lost Lost the Plot?

2002-09-17 Thread Odeluga, Ken

I'd have to agree with most comments so far. And it seems that promoters are
deliberately targeting Lost events by staging their own on the same night.
It has to be said that Carl Craig and Vladislav delay coincidentally on the
28th are pretty firm competition. As was Farben/Juan Atkins last month.
(Although Lost booked Atkins this year and most agreed that he played an
electic set). The only reason such promoters are able to do this is because
Lost has not occupied the ground which it ought to and taken such 'risks'
(as in breaking from the bang-bang, 4/4 norm) itself.

But I would add the odd proviso - For instance, people keep overlooking the
Du Kru! OK, they're not everyone's cup of tea. But it does seem odd for
folks to complain about wanting something different and then to totally slag
off what to me seems a very brave departure on the part of the Lost
organisers.

Lost has always been a broader church than some are recently giving it
credit for - as well as Colin Dale playing straight up house last month
we've also been lucky enough to see Weatherall playing his blend of dubby
breaks this summer and there have been others this year and all years.

Secondly, I think people need to remember that Lost has always been at the
forefront of changes in the 'what' and way of Techno: remember Basic Channel
and more recently remember New Year's Eve - Also it takes a little while for
changes in collective wishes to filter through - think of it as a
proto-institution. However, I'm not really about defending the
unsupportable, no matter how much of a sentimental attitude I may have
towards the thing.

So perhaps the time to take note is now Lost boys!

Anyone know where I can get those plastic crates that are a perfect fit for

I recently moved house and scored a load of decent boxes from Homebase - Its
worth taking down some 12's tho as they have a pretty big selection.

I got mine at a store we have stateside-bed bath and
beyond. (BTW Henry Rollins does a great bit about bed
bath and beyond and his obsessions w/ plastic record
sleeves.)

Not sure if these are in the UK-but other people I
know have just gotten them from seeking out dumpsters
from places that order large quantities milk (as they
are traditionally plasic milk crates).

 We
expect good DJs to challenge our expectations and constantly surprise us,

You might - I expect a good (club) DJ to make me dance.

I expect them to make me dance through playing new and exciting music.

If you really want your expectations challenged and to be 'constantly
surprised', would you really go to Lost?

I used to go to Lost to be challenged. As P Dircon has pointed out, they
used to book DJs like Mike Dunn and Mark Broom. One particular party
springs
to mind - the Axis party with Mills and Hood in 95 (I think). That was a
real eye-opener, but I haven't heard sets liek that from either Hood or
 Mills since.

The best ones I have found have been:

* Milton Keynes market had some square hard blue plastic ones which were an
absolutely perfect size - unfortunately they never cropped up again which was a
shame since they were only 99p :-(

* Office World/Staples stock a clear coloured plastic crate for about £2-3 (?)
that will hold about 100 12s which are very durable... If you carry records
quite a bit they are very useful

* The BQ folding ones are appalling - the only one I have had for 12s
disintegrated very quickly; however the smaller ones are a nice size for 7s

The best storage for records I have found has been a shelving unit that IKEA
sells - it is called Expedit and is a 4x4 array of compartments which fit your
12s with just enough room to be comfortable but not waste too much space; you
should be able to fit 50-100 records in each compartment without problem; it
also looks nice and you can put stuff on the top too - here's a link to it:

There's also the Billy range at IKEA - They are not usually shown in the
catalogue but they have a range of units similar to those which are
available in both 4 and 2 spaces. The good thing is that they are deep
enough to put your decks on the top of them - they're about £20 - £32.

RE: [313] record crates

2002-09-17 Thread Matthew MacQueen
You can get those crates at The Container store here
in the US. They are made by Tucker. They stopped
making them for a while but then they discovered the
huge demand for them for djs and record collectors.
boy are they cashing in on those.

Also if you're in/near Chicago, Gramaphone records sells really sturdy crates
made for vinyl, they're taller and stronger than most generic 'storage' crates
I've seen, and don't pinch the corners like most milk/dairy crates do. And
they're strong and rigid enough so you can stack them vertically, good handles,
etc.

Then you just have to debate which crate you put on the bottom, cause they're
heavy as hell to lift, should you need to dig out that old loft classic from
the very bottom crate to complete the perfect set :)

Detroit recording artist and Interdimensional Transmissions label owner
Branden M. Gillan, alias Ectomorph, explains the source of energy found in
Detroit music and Detroit people. Starting with a rough layout of the
social situation and its effects on the artists there, he stresses the
importance of the radio mix shows in the mid-to-late 80s, their influence
on Detroit DJs like Derrick May, and the way Detroit Techno has been

very nice video! the part where bmg talks about kms' flirtations with early

Re: [313] Religious producers/DJ's (was: TERRENCE PARKER)

2002-09-17 Thread glyph1001
You know...I'm not totally convinced that its everyone else's fault that
the younger djs aren't stepping up. Contrary to everyone's belief,
being a dj and having it as a career is not as simple as it appears to
be. There is a process you go through like everything else. You can't
be a lawyer overnight, or a doctor or a construction worker or an
artist. You can say I'm a be this, or I'm a be that but actually
doing IT is something entirely different. I too know some individuals
who are good but, come to discover, they lack the right mentality to
succeed and you can't pass the blame for that. Its always some excuse
but its lack of confidence, fear they might fail, laziness,
procrastination, lack of discipline, no awareness etc, blah blah blah,
on the individual. This is a game and you have to be a 'real' player to
win.

Look, I came across the Red Bull Academy website and found an article
about Mr. James Barton of the Cream organisation in Liverpool and that
guy pretty much said it all for me.

Read it and weep.

Quote --

...there's a difference between being talented and being well known.
Let me put my business hat on for two seconds: Being the best technical
DJ, the best fantastic DJ is great. But if no one knows you, no one is
going to pay to come and see you.

So there's two jobs that need to be done. Most people have already got
the DJ bit fixed. But in terms of exposure it's really difficult.
There's a number of ways you can do it. You could make a record. A lot
of DJs have been discovered through making a great record. You could
start your own night, which was the norm 10 years ago when I was
involved. When people wouldn't listen to me playing records, I started
my own night. DJs need to be technically amazing, but they need
awareness as well. It's up to them, in the early part of their careers,
to develop their own awareness.

Mind you, alot of these younger djs DON'T make their own productions.
That's one problem. Even if its to get other prominent djs to play
your music which is key, productions helps boost one's profile big time.
Its got to be good too, not some mish mash. That don't count.

Most importantly you need to be persistent. To play for an
organisation or in a club like Cream you need to be pretty well known.
You need to already have spent two, three years on the circuit, playing
for 50, 100 or 200 people. That is part of the process of learning your
trade. You can not expect to walk straight into Cream and play for
3,000 people on a million-pound sound system. There is a time and a
point. For us it's a bit like watching a radar screen. Someone has to
hit our radar screen before we give them a go.

Ok, that's two, three years on the circuit, plus the time taken to
perfect your skills. So give it...oh, 7-8 years tops. So you see
that's why many 'old dudes' have long careers because the road to the
promise land is a long, difficult one.

You need to have that experience, you need to know how difficult it
can be. It's f*cking difficult out there. It's really difficult to
support yourself, to get the gigs. But it makes you a better, stronger
person, a much stronger DJ. Whether you're a DJ or a businessman, you
have to get round those things in order to succeed. When it's
difficult, that's when you find out who the real players are.

I'm a big believer in talent and that talent will always come through.
Like a good record, it never goes away. It'll disappear for a while, but
it will come back and it will keep coming back. The same applies to
talent. But not unless you've got the desire and the will to keep coming
back and take in rejections. You just need that total determination to
keep going.

Paul Oakenfold is a good example. He's got people who love him, he's
got people who hate him. I've worked with him on and off for a long
time and there's one thing that has always struck me about Paul: He is
probably the hardest working person I've ever come across. He will go
somewhere that nobody else will go. He will get on a plane and he will
tour Peru if we asked him to tour Peru. Four or five years ago, when
everyone was making a lot of cash here in the UK, he went to the States,
dropped his fees and toured there. That's why he is now probably the
wealthiest, highest-earning DJ ever.

People like Oakenfold have been at the top of the game for 20 years
and there is a good reason for that. The guys who are still here, who
have been doing it for a long time, that's because they've took care
of their careers. They might not be the most exciting DJs in the world
but they're very professional, they conduct themselves in a certain
way and you can rely on them.

It's all about respect. If you lose respect for the people that you
work with and you lose respect for the dancefloor, you're f*cked. The
really cool guys[djs] are not interested in that. They'll still charge
you an arm and a leg because they believe

[313] New Transmat artist?

2002-09-17 Thread Arne Weinberg
Hello folks!

I received a new 12 on Transmat by an artist I have never heard of before
he is called Rodenbush and I really like the deeper track on the b-side.
Can anybody tell me more about this artist?

I also heard the next Transmat 12 by John Arnold today. really great stuff!
On the A side is a very nice brazil jazzy house track that reminds me on the
last John Beltran album. Really sweet! And on the other side are two tracks
that sound a little bit like some Recloose stuff the winner is definitely
side A.

Re: [313] Fw: 28 SEPT. JEFF MILLS / STEVE BICKNELL...

2002-09-17 Thread s mcgill
I was in total agreement with you in a way until you mentioned Francois K.
I was at that Lost, and to be honest, I remember a few of my close
associates saying a similar things about him. You know, should be playing a
'Body Soul' type set.
Well in response to that I totally disagree. At the end of the day, it is
down to Lost to book him for what they want and steer him that way. I wanted
to experience the journey of one of his typical sets, but instead I
witnessed a guy expressing himself in a thoughtful way but with techno
records - and I enjoyed it. I mean how many times does FK get to do that?
and furthermore I feel he will be doing this a lot more often from now on.
He masde have used the effects, but I thought it was well controlled. Not
just some run of the mill ass who wants to wear put the effects unit on a
pioneer. It was deeper, and people who witnessed his attempt at this type of
set at Sonar will know what I mean.

More of please FK. Am I the only one?

He has been playing a little bit more of a wide range recently, but not
much
At the last Lost he played stuff I'd never imagined him play, like Kings
Of
Tomorrow and Laurent Garnier. His sets on Electronic Directory are
extremely
eclectic (The Clash, Kyoto Jazz Massive), so we know he's capable of
playing
more varied sets, but he seems happy trotting out the same old
Axis/Purposemaker records over and over again for the (for the most part)
unimaginative London techno crowd (well, specifically the Lost crowd).
He must be aware that there are a lot of broad-minded techno fans who will
welcome him branching out but I think maybe Lost jocks are intimidated
into
playing safe sets.
Lost should start booking some fresher DJs like Dave Tarrida and Surgeon,
even if it's just in a support slot 'cos the old school are beginning to
 fail us.
