hey simon... what's up with these fill tracks? they're some of
the

most
melodic and engaging works that i have heard. but they are only a
minute

or
so long! can you stretch any of them out a bit? i wanna kick back
with

headphones and melt with the fill tracks for at least 15 minutes.

please.

: )

I was listening to his live in Chicago PA again on the bus tonight,
and I

think there are two possible responses to this:

a) he is the real 'subliminal seducer'.

b) he can't orchestrate a track to the point of finishing it at a
length

greater than 4 minutes.

I think anyone familiar with his work will agree the answer is 'a',
and Carl
Craig is not, if fact, the subliminal seducer. ;) Or maybe they both
are in

different ways?

You could level the same criticism against The Black Dog's 'Music For
Adverts and Short Films', which is one of the best albums of any sort
of
music in my opinion. It's less about each track than the mood changes.
Or...

the whole thing works and is successful precisely because it leaves you
wanting so much more of the same.

As dance music afficianados, I think it's particularly hard to
acclimate to
this style, although I MUCH prefer it to crap DJ's letting records
play for
10+ minutes at a time before moving on. I mean, that creates zero
vibe. No
one does, or should play successive 10+ minute tracks. That's just
stupid.

It doesn't work. CiM's style is a refreshing change from
repitition-habituation.

(313) New UR/Submerge

2002-10-15 Thread Simon Walley
Maybe I missed something but I haven't seen much mention of the new Submerge
releases...? I hadn't bought any records for a while so I treated myself:

The Motech is great - reminds me of City of Fear on UR with its repeating
phrases. They're not tracks with a kind of musical structure, they're more
sparse, moody affairs. Two tracks, both tight.

X-Ray's Lockdown is also tight - a similar vocal to some Keith Tucker
tracks but the track is a rougher hi-tech funk. The flip is Eroteks' I
Shall Tek Thee which is also excellent but has already been released on
Metroplex - although my old copy skipped so this was a fortunate B-side
inclusion for me :)

The live version of Hitech Jazz is better than the original! The
'jazziness' of the original was in the sounds more than the structure but in
the live version there's more of a jam going on with the live sax and some
really funky synth keys (from Gerald Mitchell I think). It gives more energy
and variety to the original track (included on the flip) which sounds more
static when played back-to-back with this live version.

Both tracks on The Illuminator 12 are from Electronic Warfare
double-pack but its good to have a nice clean, loud cut of The Illuminator
and also to see that track gets the greater exposure it deserves.

The re-release of Andre Hollands Inversions is also nice as this track was
an overlooked (although understated) classic. The flip is some
new/unreleased track I think and its strong tough UR hi-tech funk - really
good stuff.

Analog Assasin has almost an electro/breakdance feel to it's stabbing
chords but the drums are like Basecamp Alpha 808. The flip sounds a bit
similar to SID6 - sort of focused, driving UR electro. All good.

The Model 600 Update wouldn't have sounded out of place on Direct Beat -
wicked robotic electro. Goes well with the X-Ray.

The first Sweat 12 is nice too - nearest comparison is maybe some Soul City
releases crossed with Shake (although without the freakiness - the tracks
are pretty straight). Theres a fair amount of bass to it as well - I'd like
to hear this in a club.

And finally the SID mix CD on Electrofunk is an excellent showcase of
semi-recent Submerge material. DJ 3000 does a tight mix with one or two
tricks to keep the interest up but also does the intended job of showcasing
the tracks.

(313) 45/33 cutting

for the a-side we are told to listen at 45rpm, which sounds right, but
then the b-side sounds way more like it's supposed to be played at 33.

That'll be because it is supposed to be played at 33... :)

Is it possible to make vinyl in such a way that one side is 45 and the
other
 33?

Yeah - the sides are cut independently of one another, one at a time, so it
makes no difference...

RE: (313) 45/33 cutting

2002-10-15 Thread Neil Wallace

I don't think its quite that simple since (I think) a big metal plate is
produced for each side of the record and then this is used to press the
vinyl.

I don't see why you couldn't press the whole thing at 33rpm effectively
but have a track recorded as pitched down so that it would be slow at 33
but correct at 45. (if that makes sense to anyone ill be surprised)

I think I know the lost record youre on about I think its lost 4. first
side has one track at 33, the flip the first track is 33, the second is
really slow but sounds normal at 45

RE: (313) 45/33 cutting

2002-10-15 Thread T.J.Johnson
The problem wouldn't be in the prssing of the record,
it'd be in the cutting of the lacquer. The mastering
engineer woul have to change the tools cut-rate, but it
is possible to have a 45 and a 33 on the same side. To
make things less complicated for the sound engineer,
all he would have to do is pitch the track up or down
before it is cut, then the engineer wouldn't have to
change the tool's feed-rate between tracks...

How do I set it so that when I click on a link (the Cim
live pa link for example) it gives me an option to
download or open? Right now, when I click on an mp3

If you are using a Microsoft product like OE and IE, right click on the link
and choose Save target as..., a box will open up so that you can choose
where to save the file to, so then you can navigate to yr preferred folder
and save the mix/mp3 whatever in there.

Without hearing the tracks, it is hard to say, but I
can see Martin Luther King Jr. and Chuck D from public

with liberal political views...

You could pick up the recent reissue of Classic Fingers - nicely done on 3
bits of vinyl. The previous one on Blackmarket was only 2 slices. Amnesia
has recently been bootlegged and features Waterfalls. Picking up the
originals can be hard, but then you can be patient (I'm not very good at
that) and save yourself a fortune.

Just for the record, it's Chuck Roberts, not Chuck D on that release on
Juno. His is the In the beginning there was... version that came out on
the UK label Desire originally.

J

Ok, I'll get serious for a bit - anyone tried to get hold of any classic
Fingers recently? (I'm thinking of Waterfalls and the like). How
difficult
 is it going to be?

2002-10-15 Thread Matthew Mangold
This is because whomever put the file on the server more than likely has the
persmissions set to execute but not read. This can be fixed only by
someone with access to the server the files are on. They simply have to
chmod the file to the appropriate setting.

I recall when Amnesia was bootlegged a few months back some people
complained about the quality of the pressing but mine is fine, and I'm very
happy to own it. This could be the option 4 u.

Just for the record, it's Chuck Roberts, not Chuck D on that release on
Juno. His is the In the beginning there was... version that came out on
 the UK label Desire originally.

Like Jonny, I wondered if the remix was actually by Fingers, since there
were so many crazy versions to come out. I had always figured they were
cheaky Farley remixes. I saw the record at VJ Friday, and was [-] close to
buying it, but I'd just paid so opted against it. The record definitely
*says* it's a 'Chuck D' remix, although I think your assessment above is
right. Since this is a reissue on Traxx, I'd be really surprised if it was a
Chuck D from PE remix, since someone would've heard of it before.

Oh, and I tried to post some record reviews up here yesterday but they
didn't go through, so you can view them here if you're interested:

You have the Kooky Scientist and Christian Smith at the venue formally known as
Motor on the 26th of this month. The Necto in Ann Arbor has also been bringing
in some quality techno acts.

'97, i believe. But at the time it was a Sony Mix-Up release... I'm not
100% sure, but i don't think it had the Mayday Mix title until later on.

I have the Mayday Mix - on Open - from '97, although the copyright is from
both '97 Sony Music Japan and Ministry of Sound (Open). So I dunno what that
clears up, if anything. I always thought the Open version came first, but I
can't confirm anything. The pricetag on mine is from Oct-97, if that helps
at all.

the copy i have is sony music japan... think it was mix-up vol. 5.. i'll
have to look again. came out next after the original mills liquid room
cd.
all the artwork is japanese, lots of engrish grammatical errors, etc.
funny
animation of derrick in a space suit, holding the stereotypical spaceman's
briefcase-thing with a transmat logo on it.
pretty sure it came out in '97 and i believe it was the first release, but
it may have only been the only release for a short while.
did yours come with a little photo booklet? would have come tucked inside
the insert. 2.5 x 3.5 collection of 18 photos, derrick all over the
world, little captions for each. i've wondered whether or not the other
releases included this. some nice pics in there.

5 pics in mine, probably excerpts from the 18? I imagine Sony was the
original then. My fav pic is the one of him staring at the stodgy old dude
in the seat next to him, while the old guy is looking into the camera. That
one cracks me up. :)

drive your posterior to detroit on a monday night, and come to foran's.

they might not be high-priced big names, but they know their techno, and
there's almost always a majority of real headz hanging about.

k, now i remember... the Open/Ministry of Sound version came shortly after
the Sony Japan Mix-Up Vol. 5 version. it came with the 18-page version of
the photo booklet; i didn't know there was a 6-page version. woohoo, i win!
heh... ;)

incidentally, the main insert for this japanese version is kinda bizarre.
if you fold it one way, you get part of the picture, or what seems like
should be the main cover pic... only it's cut off. fold it the other way
and you get the track listing and it fits just right within the cd window,
but it's just not what you would expect in terms of 'traditional' cd cover.
it's like the back cover is the main cover. just a cultural thing, i
suppose.

The copy I bought (found on Gemm.com) is copyrighted to Sony Entertainment
Japan and Ministry of Sound Ltd. 1997. It's not called Mix-up vol 5 - just
The Mayday Mix. I do think they are both the same CD with different
artwork. The catalogue number is OPENCD005 - which pretty much confirms
that it is vol 5 in the mix-up series.
The insert I have, and it only came with this one, has Derrick in various
places around the world and the track listings (about 6 pages total).
There
is one pic which I get a chuckle from. Derrick is slouched in his seat on
a
bus/train. There is this one guy leaning toward him like he's talking to
him and an much older guy is sitting between them clutching an old jacket
staring right at the camera. Derrick has his shades on and appears to be
ignoring the guy talking to him - he's just looking at the old guy next to
him. The expression on Derrick's face and his body posture is sort of like
How the hell did I get here?
