"But didn't he engineer Nevermind with Butch Vig producing because I remember

He did pro the Page/Plant record from '98, which might help explain why
Shellac have provided fans with Krispy Kremes at Sunday AM shows. They also
played on a steamboat a couple years ago -- not exactly the equivalent of
flying pigs or on-stage Stonehenge replicas, but I bet they didn't make
anything off those gigs.

heh, my "almost original copy" bought from china says:

"Produred and Engineered by Butch Vig and Nirvana Mixed by Andy Wallare"
typos aren't mine, oh and the band name is spelt many times as "NIRVAVA".

He did a lot of producing: The Breeders, PJ Harvey, even the execrable Bush
but we can forgive him because he also produced The Pixies' excellent Surfer

I remember seeing them as well - they started their show by lighting an
entire brick of firecrackers off at the edge of the stage which sent the,
rather thin, crowd back about 15 feet. Then the drum machine proceeded to
malfunction throughout the show. The I was threatened with bodily harm by
some Nazi skin head. Great show.

The first track on the second shellac album is, to my mind, very techno
- heavy on the repetition so that when the (very slight) change comes
its all the more powerful.

I think im right in saying that shellac build a lot of their own
equipment (amps etc) in order to get a very unique sound (albinis metal
guitar picks, his collection of vintage mics and having two producers in
the band probably helps as well).

I read recently that albinis extensive 'engineering' credits (I believe
he does not like to be credited as a producer) are due to the fact the
he still to this day charges a bare minimum to record bands.

(313) Really late 2002 tops

2003-01-07 Thread Jonny McIntosh
Hey all,

Not had email since NYE (btw, sincere and prolific apologies for being a
drunken d!ck and not realising at Public Life...). I haven't heard the
latest Drexciya stuff, and there are a few things people have mentioned I
realise I've missed out on, but here's my tops of 2002 so far.

First off, 10 for Steve "techno". Though there's a few I haven't got round
to picking up yet on Iridite, downlow, Keynote etc.

Agent K "Feed The Cat [Jason Brunton Remixes]" (UK Laws Of Motion)
Convextion "Gray Sky Warm Car" (US downLow)
DJ Oji & Una "We Lift Our Hands In The Sanctuary" (US Sancsoul)*
Future Beat Alliance "Head Ways" (UK Emoticon)
James Cotton "Mind Your Manners" (US Ghostly International)
M>O>S "Utilities 2" (NE Rushhour)
Macho Cat Garage "The Muffler Strut" (US downLow)
Macho Cat Garage "Freedom For The Macho Cat" (NE Viewlexx)
Russ Gabriel "Flip Down To Break" (UK Emoticon)
$tinkworx "Todas Los Nochas" (NE Delsin)

*Jason Kessler did the design ;P

Also, got a CD of The Moderator and latest $tinkworx on Keynote - these are
both very, very good. It is part of my plans to ignore Dave Clarke's
favourites, btw.

There were tons of great reissues and edits, but other original work that
got me the most included...

Blaze "I Think Of You" from Spiritually Speaking LP (UK Slip 'N' Slide)

And don't forget that there is a new Paris album on the way, called
"Sonic Jihad". No stranger to pissing off Bush family members in his
packaging and lyrics, Paris has this time opted for a cover showing a
jet plane homing in on the White House, and has released a single from
the LP where he gets a bit, erm, leftist!

I've rediscovered that album myself this year as well, the raw 808+101
production really does it for me I find - ah, it all seems so long ago
now that rap was that political.

(Ob313 - Paris' DJ on that album was called "Mad Mike", but wasn't *the*
Mad Mike...)

Big Black, led by Steve Albini, were based in Evanston IL, though I
believe that Steve Albini was from MT (?). The back cover of
'Atomiser' has a letter addressed to the bassist, David Riley, from
the Electrifying Mojo, welcoming him to the MFA (Midnight Funk
Association) and a MFA ID card signed by the Mojo that says:

"The bearer of this card is a No.1 fan of the Electrifying Mojo; and
a member in good standing who is entitled to special priviledges and
considerations due to members of the M.F.A.; as specified by the
Electrifying Mojo.

CLUB MEETING: Monday thru Saturday 12 Mid to 12.30 a.m."

Sorry for this outburst of extreme (and OT) trainspotterism, but I
thought that was quite cool actually. BTW, Big Black often used a
Roland drum machine in their recordings.

Also, their record label 'Touch and Go' is pretty awesome, with acts
like The Jesus Lizard, Urge Overkill etc. Not very 313 I realise, but
great music nonetheless.

I second Big Black - weren't they from Detroit? This may be an extremely
tenuous 313-link but doesn't the cover have a matchbook or a membership card
or something (sorry, I haven't seen it in years) depicting the Electrifying

eager to get that EP.

the same Plaid as those on Warp ???

Stupid question : what is the reason behind their changing of catalogue
numbering ? is it just the 10th anniversary ? and also : I loved their
10.100 and 10.100.2 comps, haven't seen any 10.100.3, has there been one

RE: (313) peacefrog schedule

2003-01-07 Thread Matthew Mangold
Speaking of Peacefrog, didn't they put out a tune out a while back... say,
seven or so years ago... called 'Empath'? I'm pretty sure that was the only
vocal snippet, just the one word, 'empath' layered with efx, fairly minimal,
housey, tech? Anyone else remember this?
