Re: (313) Follow the Funk ?
Hi Matthew, RSP is an old project I had with my friend Jean Vanesse (he is working on my live show now, and sometimes we are recording some tracks together...as Tech do Brasil on my LP). We released 4 records under his name. The first was Funkanoïd, out on Local records , Belgium. (there two re-editions, one on Respect! records, Germany...with a Beroshima remix...another on Confused rec -Germany- with a Clemans Neufeld and a Hutemann remixes) The second was Crosstech on Local rec. The thirds Follow the funk with a remix by Grain on Music Man records The fourth and last one Hipocrisy on Local rec Ok, you have the complete story of R.S.P ;-) Its cool to see that some people still like that ! any water used in cleaning records should be distilled water. tap or bottled water has crap in it. james From: David Hampson [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Tue, 4 Mar 2003 17:11:23 - To: 313@hyperreal.org Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: (313) re: Subject: cleaning records Best thing is to be very careful with them so you don't ever have to clean them! Here is what I do: I find light dust or finger marks you can get off with a silicone impregnated cloth (you can get these from some good vinyl stores and many bad ones too). If you have heavy dust rinse or soak in cold water first (to remove particles that may scratch the surface), stand upright to leave to dry then use your silicone cloth again to wipe. Remember to avoid getting water on the label! If there is more than just dust and light fingermarks you can either use isopropyl alcohol (you can buy this from chemists or buy it from record stores at higher prices in bottles marked record cleaner) but I personally use the cheaper method of water plus washing up liquid - spray on, leave for a minute then use a soft cloth to clean, then rinse or soak in cold water until there are no more suds then stand upright and allow to dry. If it is very very dirty (food stains, ingrained dust etc) first spray on a heavy soap solution to allow ingrained dust to be dissolved or to float out of the grooves, rinse and then clean again. I've seen the staff in Reckless Records in London using lighter fuel to clean records but I'm not 100% sure whether or not this is good for your records - I personally would not put it near my records! However it is very very useful for taking off those annoying price stickers which tend to destroy your sleeves when you try to remove them - simply spray the label until it is soaked and leave it until the fuel has just evaporated, then the sticker will come off easily (if it doesn't give it another coat and it should come off easier next time) (note - if you are removing many labels in a non-ventilated room it may do some good to have some ambient music available)... Top tip 2 - you can also use the lighter fuel to regenerate your marker pens - simply spray into the pen tip, put lid back on and leave overnight and it doubles the life of the marker pen, thus saving you the cost of the tin of fuel :) David - Subject: cleaning records Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] probably been asked a million times but whats the best stuff for cleaning records...also does putting weights on the end of the tone arms make the record wear out faster??? -

It's funny you should say that, I'm working on a project exploring the plastic sound characteristic of the Roland TR- boxes in the spirit of old S. i dont think it will wear the records out any faster, but it is extremely hazardous to doing any fast cueing, or scratching i have a similar problem on one of tables .. and i've seen it on others... get a screwdriver and very gently tighten it a little - be very gradual though that should clear up your problem peace Recoil live on InterFACE - Astral Physics -- every Tuesday 7-9 pm est, Toronto - http://www.pirate-radio.co.uk msn: [EMAIL PROTECTED] icq: 98984143 :) From: scotto [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: (313) tone arm wiggling Date: Wed, 5 Mar 2003 02:19:26 -0500 I was digging through some older records and put on bc 1. I was standing there watch the record spin and the tone arm caught my eye. it was wiggling very fast, now I thaught that was odd so I put the record on the other table and it did not do it. I then decided to swap the needles and I had the same results. now not every record does this and the BC 1 was rather bad it got to one point and it started to skip a couple times. I tested the same area on the oother table no skip or even pop. I also noticed with that table when I cue records or try to scratch the needle and tone arm move around a lot and usually pop out of the groove. the other table does not do this. so I am now thinking something is broken or loose. has anyone else experienced this problem? will this damage my records? make them wear out faster? scotto lansing, mi. _ Help STOP SPAM with the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail

I also noticed with that table when I cue records or try to scratch the needle and tone arm move around a lot and usually pop out of the groove. the other table does not do this. I've been experiencing this problem a lot recently. I bought new needles last year but the problem remains, when I cue the records the needle jumps out the groove and goes back to the start. Putting 5 p coins on top of the cartridge sorted the problem out but when I read on 313 about extra weight damaging records they came straight off! I've tried adjusting the weight height of the tone arm but it doesn't help the problem. I put it down to the fact that I must have been sold some dodgy needles (they're the standard Stanton ones) thought trying a different make might sort it out. Does anyone know what the problem might be? G.

I don't think the tone arm has been flipped round backwards - I've had a mate check it out as well but I'll double check. I did try adjusting the anti-skate (I think I've tried all possible combinations of weight / height / anti-skate !!) It's got to the point where it's just too annoying to mix as I'm always battling against the decks! G.
Re: (313) tone arm wiggling
[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote on Wed, 5 Mar 2003 about following: Does anyone know what the problem might be? is your deck in balance? the feet are the key here. they can be set to different heights. also, check your anti-skate settings. some records with heavy basses and/or with some phasing in basses (lot phasing-groove will cut off, but this is usually addressed in test-pressing phase, and if one knows what they are doing, already in mixing and mastering) make this happen. typical quick rule for antiskate setting is that if you have 2.5g of weight, try anti-skate around 2.3-2.7. i dunno the proper way to figure out the correct setting but if you have one sided record, put the needle on the empty side and and it should travel trough the record in about 5 minutes. that's whats been told here before, never done that :) also, someone suggested switching the weight upside-down. not good because then you don't know how much anti-skate you need. and you get A lot more weight on the needle - MORE WEAR on the records. sakke -- - * remixes out now * - http://www.arabuusimiehet.com/sakke/music.html
Re: (313) tone arm wiggling
This will probably be to do with the tonearm and cartridge compatibility. Do a google search for tonearm cartridge Resonance and you'll find a few links explaining the phenomenon. Here's one of them I found http://www.gcaudio.com/Archives/tonearmcartidge.htm Putting more playing weight on will help the cartridge to track but will make the sound become more 'dead' and will wear records quicker. However, what wears records out the most are mistracks. I don't know too much about Dj turntables and the like but I have heard from very many sources that the arms Technics come with are not really very good. Origin live (www.originlive.com) make nice cheapish arms including one which they now aim for the DJ market. I have a OL modified rega arm on my turntable and it's superb but I've no idea what it's like for scratching etc. Please remember to look after your Vinyl as it's a very precious and you owe it future generations who may want to hear this music. - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: scotto [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Wednesday, March 05, 2003 8:56 AM Subject: Re: (313) tone arm wiggling I also noticed with that table when I cue records or try to scratch the needle and tone arm move around a lot and usually pop out of the groove. the other table does not do this. RE: (313) re: Subject: cleaning records
Never really thought about that - I 'll switch to using distilled water from now on! It would probably be beneficial to also switch from washing up liquid (which I know contains a bit more than just soap) to a milder soap, though I'm sure hand soaps have other additives... anyone with any ideas here? As for the GruveGlide and Disc Doctor has anyone experimented with it and really got significantly better results? It seems quite a high initial outlay (especially with Disc Doctor) and I've never bought a brand new record before and thought that sounds like the record is really dirty! like they seem to imply! Re: (313) tone arm wiggling
I can think of three possible explanations: 1. the height ring is not locked, which makes the whole assembly a bit wobbly 2. the pins holding the arm in place are a bit loose (tighten v. gently) 3. the socket that the headshell sits in is loose - this is really annoying and may require a new tone arm. Dan I also noticed with that table when I cue records or try to scratch the needle and tone arm move around a lot and usually pop out of the groove. the other table does not do this. G.
