Re: (313) UR
It's also worth remembering that Mike Banks (like K. Larkin, S. Stoll, J. Hendrix) is an ex-armed services man who has chosen to wage war on oppression, injustice exploitation using alternate means which appear inconsequential to the unknowing unwitting. At the risk of stating the obvious, politics music remain inseparable in his book. UR's reaction to the bootlegger problem can't be divorced from the ongoing struggle to prevent George Orwell's vision from becoming the all-encompassing reality: The future of mankind is a jackboot stomping endlessly on a human face. UR has determined it will kick back, right to the bitter end. On Mon, 14 Apr 2003, Cyclone Wehner wrote: OK, I think I understand the context of this now. I think it's kinda a hip-hop way of expressing it, appropriating terms like 'shock and awe'. It's ironic, flipping terms to get people's attention and make them think. I would be surprised if UR supported this current conflict, com'on. But some 'wars' are necessary - struggles for self-determination, justice, equality, etc - and I am as pacifist as anyone. War here is figurative, it could be as much about people power on the streets or campaigning Sony as with the Jaguar 'cover'. UR have a compelling point on the bootlegging. Bootlegging affects their ability to run a business and look out for their families - and so achieve self-determination. I think KDJ has been very, very, very misunderstood. People shouldn't take it so personally, unless they're bootleggers! I think you'll find he just supports all people who keep it real and realness has no colour. Haven't really followed this thread, as I have been off for a while, but I am sure it's figurative, as is a lot of UR's music and imagery. Probably more a reference to The Struggle - civil rights, African-Americans, Indigenous peoples, working class, women... self-determination, equality, etc. It's there to make you think? While I do not support the rip-off, I think the footer message War when necessary sucks big time. Peace in the good times/War when necessary. What defines necessity. If the US economic situation continues to deteriorate does this necessatate enforcing control through trigger happy kick ass advanced technology toting red-necks - know what I'm sayin'?

Re: (313) Shake in Holland, in Liverpool too
I know I am bit slow in replying but Shake played a blinder the day before that in Liverpool too on Friday 11th April. He was an ultimate star when he came, very special atmosphere in the place as usual for T-funkshun's 2nd Birthday. It was a special night all over as Jonny McIntosh turned in a great set before Shake, starting with What's Going On by Marvin Gaye. The style of these two was most suited. I remember Shake dropping everything from Radiohead - Idoteque, Smith Hack album, Feadz - Funksplitter, Krikor on Katapult, Clash - Radioclash (this was odd as we had been enthusing about the Clash when we picked him up.), and also that electronic funk tune that's name has temporarily left me. The vocal actually says something like I sing the funk electric, I sing the funk electric, Out of space out of time, blah blah blah blah blah blah, on a journey! I think it is called Electric something. Anyway, Shake, wherever you are, I hope you are smiling after your travels. Sounds like you did damage everywhere you came. Much love. Re: (313) Re: New Music and Elitism
The new Monobox 12 on Logistic and the upcoming album were mentioned on this list. Many new Detroit techno and house records are mentioned on this list along with many other releases. I don't know how you can complain. Detroit releases have been a little slow coming out the first quarter of this year but I am sure there will be a steady stream starting now and reaching its peak with the Movement 2003 Festival. But it is obvious that you aren't using your resources to find out this information; i.e. record lists, online music samples, and visiting your local underground dance music store to listen to the music. Also, many of the major players who make this music contribute to this list. So what's the problem with recommending their releases? Biased reviews? But the artists are the contributors and the majority of the list members know what good Detroit techno/ house is. There are some real experts on this list that have written reviews for years and one has even written a book on Detroit techno that is a key reference work. Also, I am sure that the majority of the underground Detroit music community keeps a watchful eye on this list, even though some do not contribute. Please stop being so critical. This list has a wealth of information for you to use. Detroit electro labels like Twilight 76, Databse? don't get mentioned a lot. I don't get to buy many records, right now I don't even have a job, and I sub to this list mostly to hear about records I might be missing. I'm not seeing as much of that as I used to here, and I do feel that there has been a shift away from a techno sensibility too. I like deep house, broken beat, and italo-disco type things too sometimes, but that's not really the kind of content I'm here for. So if any of you are buying things on the 313 related techno and electro tip, please share your finds. Hi Dave, The reason why I haven't posted many reviews of those records is for the same reasons you list. I don't think they're specific enough to this list to warrant a review. Those that I feel are topical I've mentioned. I know you weren't speaking to me in specific, but thought I'd clarify, since I feel the same way. Honestly I would love to see more talk about new Detroit Techno, but I don't think there's a whole lot of it that's worth talking about at the moment. I'm spending more money on hip hop than techno right now. I could post loads of house reviews, and I intend to review some of the more [313]-relevant stuff, but I just haven't had the time. Soon. Hey! I've been off list for a while. I notice all the talk of Shake in Holland, sorry to be a bit late, but how was he? He was playing up at Scott Nick's T-Funkshun in Liverpool on Friday and played all kinds of stuff: KDJ, The Clash, old Prelude stuff and, of course, Radiohead. Someone's probably mentioned it already. It was a great sojourn oop north. Great to meet the debonair and few pints worse for wear Alex Bond - where did you get to? Left the T-Funkshuneers in the pub with Shake the next day, though he was strictly on the Mecca Cola. Not been much in the way of great Detroit records for me lately, but maybe I've just been missing the recommendations and playlists from here. Mills' Medium is maybe the only thing I've picked up. Oh, and the latest Theo Parrish with Hanna but that one's going to sit on the shelves, I think. Has anyone seen the Liaisons Dangereuses LP reissue here in the UK yet? Enough questions for one post.

spw: People subscribing to the 313 list know their conveniently getting informed about what is being released from all the artist and labels. we wish..belive me we wish... But perhaps this is too much of a task to expect from one person although there are people here who seem to be obsessed with 313 music so they would be ideal candidates. this would be an impossible for task for one person..313 relies upon the good will of the many..unfortunately it is filtered through people who have their own subjective tastes/whims whatever and definitely some people get far far too much play than they really deserve (imo) but in every art genre some people receive adoration more for their personality or because they have marketed themselves better and thus become more of an institution in popular culture..if you see a record on a list and want to know if someone's heard it or knows about it post a question...if you want to see an artist get more play _plug_ them here...you probably haven't noticed but many people here do this..posting positive comments to try to make others more aware, more interested and thereby more interested that next time around in purchasing that record or going to see that dj they heard about... also if you see certain people that seem to have the same sort of taste as you and you respect what they say start making sure you read their posts and maybe stop reading others..i can tell you i started doing that like 4 years ago...i _can_ say that when 313 first started it was high high HIGH in content..virtually all reviews..but that was when just a handful of supergeeks were on the list..and seriously i think you should use the work clique or something instead of elite 'cause if you had met many of the people here you'd pretty much laugh at applying the word elite to them (i am so including myself here in case anyone's ego is starting to inflate and get defensive ;)..awesome geeks imo but nonetheless :)...self-select and create your own tailored 313 list by whom you include overall though reviews have gone way way down but it seems as though the older all of us get the less inclined people are to take the time to write really thorough reviews my opinion -k

I remember him droping Nirvana in a set so well that all anyone could do was stand around and smile! Blew me away. What an ear bender! Hes full of good stories, and a very friendly man. Also he's got an album coming out on Gigolo sometime soon, I was lucky enough to hear it when he was here and it's f*ckin' hot. Long story short if you get a chance to check him out do not miss out. Re: (313) Shake in Holland, in Liverpool too
Hey, This tune Elektrik Funk 'On a Journey' is a great record! I'm happy to see it mentioned on the list, it's pretty advanced for whenever it was, 81 or 82. The instrumental is the one for me Thanks, Andrew - Original Message - From: Minto George [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Tuesday, April 15, 2003 2:03 PM Subject: Re: (313) Shake in Holland, in Liverpool too From: s mcgill [EMAIL PROTECTED] and also that electronic funk tune that's name has temporarily left me. The vocal actually says something like I sing the funk electric, I sing the funk electric, Out of space out of time, blah blah blah blah blah blah, on a journey! I think it is called Electric something. you had it write scott, It's by Electric Funk On a Journey is the cut he played and it came out on Prelude. It's a classic and one I hope never gets bootlegged. for those who were asking for some footage of shake playing, we got snippets of his set on the dL website for any interested. minto = down low music http://downlowmusic.org UPCOMING 2003: dL ltd tribute 12 dLpgccX Polarius Jams from the funk dump dL009 Dan Curtin distort.archive.desire dL010 The Connection Machine Painless dLCMLP1 __ Do you Yahoo!? Now this is a title that's been recommended on 313 before (I was paying attention!) The thing is I know there are two volumes, so before I put my hand in my pocket can someone advise me which is the best one .. 1 or 2 ? Keeping things on an electro tip .. There are two other electro comps that were recommended a while back, 'Mixed Up In The Hague' by I.F 'Little Computer People' by Anthony Rother. I've tried a Gemm search and also checked that www.biwire.co.uk but have had no joy so far. Anyone know of a retailer that carries a good back catalogue of Electro CDs??? All tips are much appreciated as usual, G.

There are two other electro comps that were recommended a while back, 'Mixed Up In The Hague' by I.F On a related note, the was talk quite a while back of a 2nd volume of Mixed Up In The Hague; anyone know what happened to that? Sean.
RE: (313) Help Finding Electro Mixes
Ferenc did it as a live mix that you could listen to online via the hotmix site, but it never had and probably never will have a proper release, so far as i know. I also don't know whether the mix is up anywhere now. (313) Carl Craig mixmag interview
Does anyone know if there is an online version of this interview from mixmag (it used to be a half decent magazine I promise)around 1996? The magazine had him on the front, outside the heidleberg project I think. I had the original but seem to have lost it. Thanks
