(313) a few finds and ?
recently found a nice cache of used records in a local shop bunch of stuff on Power Music/Sex Mania but one in particular is slamming funky techno called Pleasure Dome: 60 minutes of Tech Funk (I think that's the name, I don't have it in front of me) - it's a 3 vinyl set in a box that originally came with two slip mats (of course the used copy I found was missing these) It's a DJ Duke record anyone know more about him or the label - he was/is a Chicago DJ? more info about Power Music would be cool too - I've found several records over the last year or two on that label that are wicked acid house/technofunk - (a pink marble vinyl set of Roy Davis Jr.'s The Secret Mission anyone?) the tracks range from very funky tribal house to harder beats with loads of 303 acid lines also a Insync vs Mysteron 12 on Tenth Planet - some more info about this label would be cool if anyone has some MEK

1: i just visted the technotourist afterparties fourm and there are things posted in there that the promoters themselves havent even announced yet. hawtin @ necto and speedy j @ envy (of all places...). im not sure of the other things posted, if they are speculative or not, but even our weekly untitled @ the shelter has been posted, and the contact is set for someone who isnt even part of the night! not that we dont appriciate the promotions or anything, thanks! but it is because of everyones speculations mostly on this list that all this misinformation is getting thrown around. if a moderator from detroit is needed, i volunteer myself for the job. Maybe we are a little bit late to react to this but anyway and we are sorry to see people did post some rumours in our afterparty-list. We think it doesn't help anyone to post just some rumours and/or speculations in our database, this would decrease the reliability of the list. So unless you are the promoter or you are absolutely 100% sure that this party is going on please do not post. RE: (313) a few finds and ?/Dance Mania
Hey Michael, last year I basically did a raid on every used record shop in London for as much house as I could bear. And curiously there is a lot of the Dance mania (I'm sure that's a toned down name from the earlier version - *Sex* Mania!) aka Power Music available - I'd definitely say that it's *not* because it's generally sub-standard! There does seem to be a connection with DJ Duke. But basically, I just found dozens of barely heard-of DJ Pierre things on the label. Two titles come to mind right now: Dance With Me, and Musiq. I also remember an EP eith about 5 mixes of this acid thing (title's not in my head) by Spanky, including a Blakkat mix. A very diverse, very underground label. Clearly aimed at the DJ - these are not listening tracks, or ones that work well on their own. RE: (313) a few finds and ?/Dance Mania
I think there was a multitude of sublabels under the umbrella of DJ Duke's Power Music Distribution. I used to have a lot of Sex Trax/Power Music/Rated X stuff - it had that heavy tracky Chicago sound that a lot of Relief stuff had. I dont remember it having anything to do with Dance Mania though - I think it was just DJ Duke going crazy with his multiple labels - it was hard to keep track with them all. Highlights: Danell Dixon - Earthquake Mark The 909 King - Tribally/Into Space/Can You Dig it? DJ Duke - Wildlife Felix Da Housecat - Remains of The Conspiracy (this has one of Felix's most deranged tracks on it ever - The Chaos Engine) Aphrohead - Thee Industry Made Me Do it (more mental Felix stuff - his output now is so lame compared to stuff like Manik Needs and Tunnel Vision) -Original Message- From: Odeluga, Ken [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, April 24, 2003 10:04 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: (313) a few finds and ?/Dance Mania Hey Michael, last year I basically did a raid on every used record shop in London for as much house as I could bear. Alright Jonny, seeing as we've got your attention :o) ... can I ask this: on a slightly related note, I have noticed that quite a few house tracks from that era (say 1993 - 1995) regardless of being on Power Music or not, would have a remix called a 'Power Mix'. I keep seeing the phrase come up. the mix tends to be quite hard and techy, but I'm curious abt how such mixes came to be so called. 313-list New Yorkers should show up too, or I'll have you all killed as well. I'll hire Pete out for a handsome wage. Don't say I didn't warn you. American aggression is the new style. RE: (313) nights out in london
Just a quick post, I know its early but 25th June a night called TECHNOLOGY will be on in London at Madam Jo Jo's with Chris Finke and me. It may run monthly if all goes well but it's a start and if successful then it might move to a Friday. Anyway it's something to ponder over :) -Original Message- From: Jongsma, K.J. RE: (313) new emoticon - Double Helix
can anyone point me to any online clips of the new double helix ep on emoticon? http://www.emoticonrecordings.com/emot014.html I'm late on this thread but Hans and Rebecca's sound is just getting better and better... this record is awesome. And it's definitely a unique sound, you can hear the Detroit influences but it's original too. (this is how I feel about Recloose too). If you like Sync or Swing you definitely need to track down their Funxtiles EP on Rush Hour... there is a slower tempo cut on there that is wicked (forgot the name, I think it's on the long side??). All the Double Helix stuff is so well-produced too, I'm glad they are getting more exposure. The Double Helix mix CDs are incredible too, diverse selections and deep, cool house/dub and dusties selections. peace, Matt MacQueen

Agh. Don't want to poop on anyone's parade, and sorry for chiming in late, but be prepared for Fehlmann to be less-than inspired. When he played London a couple of months ago it sounded like he played his kompakt records track-for-track, no alteration, just slightly mixed with a touch of dubbing. Love the music, but an inspired live set it was not. If you go in expecting as much I imagine it could be quite enjoyable. I was just a tad dissapointed there wasn't any older stuff and it sounded so un-live. :/ Tristan === Text/Mixes: http://www.phonopsia.co.uk Music: http://www.mp313.com Contact: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Original Message - From: Rob Theakston [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Thursday, April 24, 2003 2:45 PM Subject: (313) Show up or I'll kill you. I was trying not to single any crews out, but since it's been done for me... I must say they're a great bunch and a brilliant collective of DJ's. Multi-dimensional, skilled and knowledgable - each DJ, not just them as a whole. I'm really excited for next week! nice, i love it when people bip and bop... they've added some more people to the line-up tonight ... MIMM: A patchcord fiesta from this near-east electronic improv association. Processed sub-organic artifacts assimilated into pulp. Courtesy of A.Mullan,A.Ingalls,D.Meice. M.Miller. Velocette: Parallel recording's boss man Jason Williams takes the live stage with his compu-rhythm jack trax from the library of Babylon. He's an innocent man, with murderous disco in his pants. Williams's has a plethora of releases under his belt that include collaborations with Kit Clayton, and Jonah Sharp. Jan Jelinek: Jelinek has his work split: into the reevaluation of phrases in soul music as Farben, a reduced approach to the dance-floor as Gramm ,and under his third pseudonym which strictly speaking isn't one. With exploration of his own production concepts, Jelinek has released six Farben eps, a Gramm album on Source, and as himself , on Stefan Betke's (aka Pole) label ~Scape. To offset the traditionally static laptop performance, Jelinek's live show explores the relationship between music and visuals. Thomas Fehlmann: An important figure in the German electronic music movement, beginning in the early 80's his group Palais Schaumburg fused dance rhythms to the experimentalist flair of 70's German rock. His past collaborative projects include Sun Electric, 3MB (w/Juan Atkins), FFWD (w/Robert Fripp, Alex Paterson), and The Orb. Felhman's current projects are for the Cologne label Kompakt. This rare US live performance is not to missed. -Original Message- From: Phonopsia [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, April 24, 2003 5:26 PM To: Grammenos, Peter; 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) Show up or I'll kill you. - Original Message - From: Grammenos, Peter [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 'Phonopsia' [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Thursday, April 24, 2003 10:20 PM Subject: RE: (313) Show up or I'll kill you. bleh ! sounds like an akufen 'live' set. was jan also there? not SURE is fehlmann was part of sun electric but I think he was. anyways, the point is that when sun electric played in pontiac in like 96 or so with the orb, they gave one of the best live shows I've ever seen. they totally showed up the orb, which put on a good show themselves. now the orb seems like hippy electronic music :P - Original Message - From: Phonopsia [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Grammenos, Peter [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Thursday, April 24, 2003 5:25 PM Subject: Re: (313) Show up or I'll kill you. RE: (313) Show up or I'll kill you.
I've heard Fehlmann couple of months ago when I was playing in Berlin. His live set was just as you described. Great music all tracks from his Visions Of Blah album, but don't know how much of it was really live. He did use Ableton, and Peavey fader box, so at least it look's like he was setting the levels for separate tracks. But nonetheless I would still go to see him again if he was playing some place near. I've also heard Jelinek one evening later, and he was amazing. All music blended beautifully together, unlike fehlmann where you could hear where one track ended and another one started. I think he was playing mostly new unreleased material, some really beautiful music. And he had someone with him who was providing some great visuals.
