(313) Movement '03

2003-05-27 Thread Fred Heutte
It's all over now except for the shouting :)

The good news is, it was a great festival. The bad news is -- hmm,
I can't really think of anything.

To the average attendee, I would bet this year's felt pretty much
like the previous three -- and that is the result of a lot of incredibly
hard work. The staging, sound and lighting were all really good and
there were few real problems. Things actually ran pretty close to
schedule.

Probably the two biggest changes this year, both for the good, were
the lack of crass commercial hype (OK, Bacardi excepted) and the
upgrade of the staging on all four stages:

Movement (main stage): a great idea to move it down to the plaza
level, it really helped the DJs and musicians connect better with the
crowd, and I thought the sound was considerably better overall.

High Tech Soul: this was in the small ampitheater area on the north
side which had gone unused in previous festivals. A huge improvement
for audience seating and the sound was also much better.

Music Institute: the tent worked pretty well at enclosing the space
and keeping focus on the music, and of course was welcome during
the few rainy periods. And four-corner sound made another leap
upward in quality.

Underground: again, moving from the back (stage right) corner to the
center made the performances much more visible and improved
crowd circulation.

Musically, it's hard to top what we got this year. I found more of
sets and live performances perked up my jaded ears than the last
couple years. In no particular order of importance, some of my
highlights:

Buzz Goree/Stacey Hale/K Hand back to back at the MI stage on
Friday. Straight up great dance music.

Ectomorph live, an even stronger show than they did in Portland

Shake shaking the rafters of the tent with a superb funky set ranging
from electropop to Radio Clash

Matthew Dear with a well constructed live set that managed to
walk the line between beats and abstraction

Stacey Pullen's first hour was as good as I've heard from him in
a long time, he really has learned how to move a big crowd (although
that tendency kind of took over later in the set)

Liquid Liquid was on fire, what a great performance that was,
the energy was just tremendous

Carlos Souffront/Marcellus Pittman/Norma Jean Bell played three
really different and absorbing styles through the afternoon today
on the main stage. Marcellus was a fill-in and he played a cool and
jazzy set during the rain that kept the energy going.

Dan Bell -- a terrific set, just the right balance of classics and
new stuff with a steady, unhurried approach

And what can I say about Jeff Mills, who just roared after the
initial equipment problems.

I'll say more about the pre and after parties elsewhere -- let the
festival stand for itself. Today may have been my favorite single
day of all four years.

Total respect to Derrick May and everyone who made it happen.
What a blast!

Critical Phase and Kirk Degiorgio's 12es really rock! Massive

Detroit-inspired techno at it's best

Agreed on all points - with a few more added. Loved hearing Aril Tony
(and co.) jazz up the live Groove La Chord. Akufen was hot; luckily he
started early and Francois K. started late - quite a dilemma, bouncing
between the latter two the The Three Chairs!
Mike Dykehouse is hilarious and incredibly talented. Clark, Carlos and Mike
Geiger all opened the fest with beautiful and well placed sets. Magda -
wow. The Detroit Experiment was hot - but it was SO crowded over there for
it. And everything Fred said was spot-on. I wish I could have seen the
Thinkbox set...my wife and I had to skip out for a few hours to a previous
comittment. As I sit here and peck this out, more and more comes back to
me. It was just a bang up weekend. A good chunk of what made it so cool was
meeting so many people I don't see often and putting faces on so many which
I usually know from email text. I continue to be astounded that this is a
free event and one which I can get to...most of the things I want to see

what I normally miss. It's such a beautiful thing to take all of this in

walk the line between beats and abstraction

 What a blast!

and that's exactly what we did...
i bought some last minute tix and went to the
festival where i got to meet none other than such
notables as carl craig, derrick may, and charlie
dark...many others too many to name...but these are
the ones i picked to help me sort things out...

i had never met mr may before and i must say i was
overly impressed...ginuwine(sp?), diplomatic, and
most importantly, friendly...i hope i can meet him
again under better circumstances...

i met with charlie dark, who heads up the
blacktronica project, and we had a very frank, but
respectful discussion which ultimateley led to an
understanding that we both kind of want the same
things in terms of a cause...we agreed to avert the
usual sicking of lawyers and/or thugs on each other
and figured out the first steps to make something
positive come out of all this...a new precedent
perhaps...

many thanks to everyone...your opinions are greatly
valued

good to hear that things worked out without a knife fight :)

I too ran into derrick may, but instead of talking, we just bounced off each
other and kept on going. in retrospect, I wish I had stopped him to thank
him for all he did to make this weekend so great

one set i totally appreciated was anthony shake shakir's. his diverse
track

selection and sharing the music he enjoys with us was cool. ;)

anyone know the name of the electro-bass heavy cut he dropped with a
vocoded

voice saying something to the effect of bass. oh baby. oh my god.

thanks,
kered

Back in Cleveland for a day of recovery before the final leg of my journey back
home to Brooklyn. Had a really great weekend in Detroit at the festival and the
afterparties. I'll probably need a day before I can write or comment on things
from my point of view but overall I think everyone enjoyed it. Thanks to a lot
of really cool people I met for the first time this weekend Dennis and
Magda, you both are great. The list meet up at your house on friday was fun and
a good way for me to put faces with names. You were excellent hosts and very
generous. To all the other list members I metRob Theakston, Tristan, Bill
Van Loo, Matt McQueen, TechnoToutrist Clan, Diana Potts, Ani, Plaslaiko...many
more, it was great chatting with all of you.
I'll have a photo gallery up on burnlab.net in a few daysafter a bit more
sleep.

(313) Selling Equipment....

2003-05-27 Thread Adam Jay

i am selling a Roland JP-8080 Rackmount Synth.

I used the JP8080 and JP8000 series to make many of the sounds on most
of my records (The Wrath bassline and squeel, etc.). And used it for
countless live pa's. the studio that houses it between gigs has always
been a smoke-free environment.

i have been the only owner of this piece, and it is missing the Volume
knob (you can still turn the Pot however). if you wanna be real hard
core you can probably go to Guitar Centre and gank a knob off a
groove-box or something. no manual, just the machine itself and power
cord.

they go for $1099 new, i am asking $600 for it

email or call me with any inquiries...
i'd be willing to trade for a Yamaha SU-700 with an expansion, or SU-700
+ some cash.

cheers
