Re: (313) LFO are back!
But LFO is no longer a duo, and hasn't been for ages. It's rediculous to expect him to rehash what he was doing over a decade ago. because it sounds better that a lot of contemporary dance music. How about using some of the same concepts bleep and bassline sound instead of 'rehashing' with out making it sound like stupid tech-house/basic channel/ micro house/ broken beat/ stupid stupid stupid. His new stuff sounds way more like Advance than anything they did as a duo, but it is also a huge leap forward from that, or the production work he's been doing in the last few years. Exceedingly complex stuff. I like the old stuff too, and think his best stuff was from the mid-'90s, as Clark, but I am still completely excited for this new album. Certainly one of the most exciting things to happen this year, and really it sounds quite different from anything I've heard to date. If this was 1985 you would say Kraftwerk Electric Cafe was a better album than Computer World. he couldn't save Depeche Modes last album which could be blamed on Depeche Mode who sounded best in the 80's. =
Re: (313) Tour de France 03 video
well even the video is a bit lame, lets face it Kraftwerk are past their prime I feel safe saying this even before their new albums comes out. At least they have descent taste in newer dance music and haven't tried to go the mainstream dance rout with genres like trance. My complaint isn't with Basic Channel it's just that sound has been imitated so many times with tech-house. --- MM [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: yea sure...thats all they are trying to do is sound like basic channelonce again you have made me laugh michael www.renegaderhythms.com spw wrote: Their trying to sound like Basic Channel how disappointing. because it sounds better that a lot of contemporary dance music. To you. So that is an excuse for LFO to keep making the same tracks over and over? I don't buy it. While diehard fans might want an artist to stay in their personal favorite period (to your ears 'the best' period) forever, the vanguard artists will always want (for better or worse) to push a sound forward, especially in a genre like techno that rewards innovation. You can't freeze a musical time period and put it in a bottle and expect to keep progress at the same time. Get over it. How about using some of the same concepts bleep and bassline sound instead of 'rehashing' with out making it sound like stupid tech-house/basic channel/ micro house/broken beat/ stupid stupid stupid. Who said his new material is trying to be something else? If it doesn't sound like old LFO and you're going to be unhappy, well start get disappointed now because it probably doesn't. You could take it up with the artist, see how far you get. Ha ha The stupid labels you mention are just words that became labels for artists pushing things in different directions, thus they got named to separate or highlight them. If they didn't move in different directions, we'd all be stuck in a rut and all electronic dance music (or whatever) would sound much more similar even than it does today. Things change, morph, take in old and new influences and move where the artist wants to take things next, get over it. Techno will never go back to the way it was 10-15 years ago, nor does it need to. Peace, Matt MacQueen

RE: (313) Bradock Discog+French House
Re: Motorbass immaculately produced French House with the funk ripping out of it- album is called Pan Soul. I remember when this came out, 1995-96 or so... really different sounding too, really stood apart from all the generic formula house flooding the market at the time, the right mix of everything. Pan Soul is filling to listen to, like a good meal! Ha ha.. BTW on Pepe Bradock, how hard is that older Kif stuff to track down? What do people consider the must-haves of the Kif material? I'll admit more than a few of the Pepe Bradock remixes I've heard have just been so-so, but his original productions I have had more success with. Of course that's completely subjective and has a bit to do with the source tracks getting remixed too... so, FWIW. Thanks, Matt MacQueen

I liked it, got a little buzz from the first time watching it. lets face it Kraftwerk are past their prime I feel safe saying this even before their new albums comes out. Bloody hell Sherlock. They're what, 55? and a pop group. I think most people not hurting for rent making music tend to get past their prime after 30 or so years in the business? Can you blame them - have they not made their contribution to history? It's fun - why not try and take a little enjoyment out of it? It's nice to hear this across the airwaves instead of S-club 7 is it not? At least they have descent taste in newer dance music and haven't tried to go the mainstream dance rout with genres like trance. Its bloody pop music. They have a large deal with a large company and have been a mainstream pop artist for quite a while. RE: (313) Tour de France
I know what you mean- there are three tracks/mixes on the 12 though and two of them are definitely growing on me- I remember how disappointed I was the first time I heard Expo 2000 and now I love it Jason Brunton I agree. To me, TDF03 is nothing short of brilliant. Two major characteristics of Kraft Werk have always been subtlety and understatement hand in hand with complexity. I always admire the obvious years of thought and effort which they seem to put into even the most miniscule part of their tracks, which (to me) seems then to raise the outcome to something like a monolith or archetype. With TDF03 - the single - that lead synth line is (to me) like auditory enlightenment, everytime you hear it, it seems to yield something different! I can't wait to hear it in full quality. I also love its sheer intelligence - I mean it's almost (ONLY ALMOST IN MY VIEW!!!) elitist. Basically, I see this in the fact that it's so brazenly simple that it seems to say, if you don't get it, f*** off! These acheivements (to me) are all the more remarkable because they maintain KW's over-30-year old principles of simplicity, acessibility and at times minimalism - but, no one can deny that the latest record is 100% 2003, and of course ahead of where the mainstream is at, as one would expect. It's also the clearest and most definitively 'techno' track which KW have ever released, to my ears. I for one am not underestimating it a bit (maybe you can tell!) All the above is natch my opinion only. k

RE: (313) Tour de France
Basically, I see this in the fact that it's so brazenly simple that it seems to say, if you don't get it, f*** off! Much like today's road racing bicycle - compare a road bike (and therefore the Tour) today to what was available when the original track was made and you'll get inside the track a bit more (no pun intended) remember Ralf and Florian and serious bicyclists - maybe I'm wrong, but I would think that they put some thought into how the song should be updated and, if they did, my guess would be that they reflected on how the music should take on the characteristics of today's racing bicycle (just like they did with the original song). To me it sounds just like Campy (as in Campagnolo) gears working just as they should - smth, slick, and effortless - and looking damn good while doing it. so - who has TdF03 available for sale online? MEK Odeluga, Ken [EMAIL PROTECTED]To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Org 313@hyperreal.org ones.comcc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED], Sean Creen [EMAIL PROTECTED], Toby Frith [EMAIL PROTECTED] 07/09/03 05:02 AMSubject: RE: (313) Tour de France I know what you mean- there are three tracks/mixes on the 12 though and two of them are definitely growing on me- I remember how disappointed I was the first time I heard Expo 2000 and now I love it Jason Brunton I agree. I for one am not underestimating it a bit (maybe you can tell!) All the above is natch my opinion only. k

(313) nite:life 017 Rolando
Anyone else excited about this? Due out in October. This should be a good comp... nite:life goes to Detroit 017 - Rolando copied from www.nrkmusic.com/ It is with great pleasure that we announce that our nite:life mix series takes the long route to the Motor City of Detroit, a city that has innovated so much great electronic music over the years. nite:life 017 lands in the hands of Rolando, a DJ and producer who has made his mark over the last few years with some groundbreaking records and awesome DJ sets. With his Los Hermanos label still in its infancy, yet with the stunning 'Quetzal', 'Birth Of 3000' and 'Tres' under its belt, his genre bending 'Knights Of The Jaguar' project for UR and a relentless DJ schedule, we expect Rolando to deliver a fine mix reflective of his influences of electro, deep house and all areas in between. /copied from www.nrkmusic.com Mike Long www.subsynth.net

If someone on 313 who knows me and knows Rich Hawtin's UK mobile # could privately email it to me, that'd be great. I had it but lost it and he's coming to Dublin this weekend and we're supposed to hook up. Thanks.

I remember when this came out, 1995-96 or so... really different sounding too, really stood apart from all the generic formula house flooding the market at the time, the right mix of everything. Pan Soul is filling to listen to, like a good meal! Ha ha.. Yeah. Third this recommendation. It really has a unique flavor. Harps, scratching, many things you didn' texpect to hear in deep house. But then we mustn't forget these are some of the same folks who brought us La Funk Mob and The Mighty Bop (BTW - anyone else feeling those recent Herbert remixes of the Mighty Bop? - nice). BTW on Pepe Bradock, how hard is that older Kif stuff to track down? What do people consider the must-haves of the Kif material? Un Pepe En Or Vol. 2, 12 (Kif) is good for one track that is not much more than a disco loop, but an excelleent loop at that. Not realy the most captivating of his records though. Of his earlier stuff I liked his releases as Trankilou - Escalope De Dingue EP on Kif and the St Glin-Glin EP on BPM Records (although I find something a bit infuriating about this one). I'll admit more than a few of the Pepe Bradock remixes I've heard have just been so-so, but his original productions I have had more success with. Of course that's completely subjective and has a bit to do with the source tracks getting remixed too... so, FWIW. Yeah, my take is completely the opposite. I think he's more skilled with other people's stuff, and his own greatest successes have been the ones that rely most heavilly on full-blown loops rather than snips. But, to each his own, as they say. :) Tristan === Text/Mixes: http://www.phonopsia.co.uk Music: http://www.mp313.com Contact: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

(313) 313 Weekend (slightly OT)
A few interesting looking events this weekend in Motor City - although neither are exactly 313-ish. Friday night Barry Andrews (XTC, Shriekback) does 2 sets (1st one cabaret piano, the second as his new act - the name of which I cannot recall, but it has the word stick in it :-) at The Buddah Bar on 8 Mile just east of Lahser (Detroit side of the street). There's also the Concert Of Colors which looks really cool - Natcha Atlas among many other diverse artists from all over the globe (and here) : http://www.accesscommunity.org/index.cfm?location=100subsectionid=91 jeff

howdy peeps i recently saw a strange looking record. it had a mostly black cover with a low quality photo of a couple of guys. i *think* it was called 'death disco', or something very similar (it was not the PIL record) it had very little info on the back and i think it was 4 tracks. it looked old kinda home made but it coulda been new. couldn't listen to it in the shop dammit. it looked cool. anyone know what this is? thanx a bunch. i hope the new LFO is nice not ugly like advance, except for ultraschall and loch ness, very pretty . the first 3 or 4 tracks on frequencies are truly wonderful. oh yeah - genre alert - i saw a new comp described as NEGROCLASH p-dogg
