<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > I don't recall who asked about recommending Talking Heads records (Gary?) > but I would look for "More Songs about Buildings and Food" yes this album is awesome, NYC art-rock tension with jerky funk. I also loved the whole 'stop making sense' movie and LP. And I'm usually not a fan of live recordings unless they're really special.. and this one was. From 1983 there was the outstanding (and probably my personal favorite) 'Speaking In Tongues' LP with some very funky melodic tracks. It kicks off with "Burning Down the House", but I prefer the b-side, every track is strong. Like 'slippery people' (later covered by The Staple Singers!), 'This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)', and 'Pull Up the Roots' which is basically a quirky disco track... mixes like butta with New World Aquarium 'Tresspassers' on Delsin.. you gotta try it if you have both of these... freaky good combo. but don't listen to me, all I play is 80s music ;) peace Matt MacQueen

Re: (313) Derrick May @ 10 Days Off video!
I don't think Derrick plays as well in Sydney but I have seen him play sensationally here - like in Dec he played a small date in an industrial part of Melb and it was incredible. He himself loved the Global KMS party in Detroit in 2002, I think he said it *felt* like the old MI days. I felt that Melb date in Dec was as good. The whole night's programming was good. The supports were sympathetic. I saw Stacey in Syd last year and he was cool, but nothing like he is in M-town. He always gets 6 hours here in Melb and I know he spends ages planning it. This year he even played Common's I Am Music. I have enjoyed Mills in Melb and Syd. I am yet to see a definitive Hawtin set in Melb as the promoter gets him to play really big raves. I am sure he can be magic on the basis of what I hear from you guys, but I am yet to experience it. I guess my point is that there are a bunch of factors that can determine how good the experience is. But, as a rule, Derrick really holds out, same with Stacey. -- >From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >To: "Grammenos, Peter" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >Subject: RE: (313) Derrick May @ 10 Days Off video! >Date: Thu, 31 Jul 2003 11:21 AM > > definitely the case. definitely the case. I remember last year in Sydney he played a 4 hour set, and towards the end people were leaving as he started playing some slow ambient jazzy tracks. The room was now about half empty, the house lights were on and it was 4:30am on a thursday morning (he was scheduled to finish at 4am) when all of a sudden he dropped "Blackwater", the pounding instrumental version to finish off the evening. I don't recall who asked about recommending Talking Heads records (Gary?) but I would look for "More Songs about Buildings and Food" (which makes C2's LP title "More Songs about Food and Revolutionary Art" a bit suspicious) in addition to Robin's suggestions. "Little Creatures" for the last album that they did that was still worth the money.
