(313) A tribute to James Stinson
September 3 marks a sad anniversary--the passing of Detroit's James Stinson at the age of 33 from heart complications. I remember clearly the day I heard the news; I ended up spending the day listening to my Drexciya records over and over. The raw power and passion of Positron Island has been not just one of my favorite Drexciya songs, not just one of my favorite electronic music songs, but one of my favorite songs of any genre since the first time I heard it; just as Drexciya remains one of my favorite bands--regardless of genre. Though I have been very lucky and have had the priviledge of interviewing many of my electronic music heroes over the years, my interview with James stood out to me right after I spoke with him--and continues to resonate even more so since his passing. After hearing the news, I re-listened to the tape of that interview from December 13, 1999 and was reminded of how many plans Stinson had--to tour, to release even more material, to build relationships with those who connected with his music. Stinson's music continues to be released even after his death, such was his level of quality productivity. And we know from the Submerge mailouts that the spawn of Drexciya are hitting vinyl. But what struck me most about my interview with Stinson was that, despite the incredible focus he obviously had on music, more importantly, he was always able to achieve a balance. James told me that music was the *third* most important thing in his life. I asked him what was ahead of music; My family and God, he replied. I am not a religious person, but I do understand the importance of family, and today, as I did the day I heard the news, I thought of James' family and wished them peace and strength. We now have only James' music to remember him by. He was only here on earth for 33 years, but he managed to give us so much joy in the time he was here, and we can continue to keep his memory alive by thinking of him whenever we play and enjoy the music of Drexciya in the future. I am sure James is now in that calm and tranquil place he fondly spoke of--somewhere over the Red Hills. Rest in peace, James Stinson. Take care. The Groovetech sale is crazy. 50-70% off lots of good stuffs. I spent all w/e going through it and came out with about 50 records, many at £2. RE: (313) Sad news: Club Tresor is Shut
Weird, I was just watching this show on cable this weekend about the rebuilding of Potzdammer Platz and was telling my wife that the club was slated to be sold or shut down some time soon and then made a comment that we should visit before it does. Haven't the authorities been trying to close Tresor for some time now because it sits on property that has seen a *huge* increase in value? Seems like they finally got their excuse. MEK Partly true Michael, but not the whole story. A big problem with the land at Potzdammer is that it simply has seen no substantial maintenance since before WWII! Remember, Tresor is the vault of a 1930s department store. The land is contaminated, has antiquated utility services like sewerage, electricity etc (when I was there in Nov 2001, there was a massive stagnant mass of water near the Tresor club which I was told was quite normal, yeuch!) not to mention being constructed with the use of some outmoded materials like asbestos, to name one. So you see, whilst the government has wanted to get hold of all the land at Potzdammer and many other places in the East for most of the last decade, the motivations are partly to regenerate the embarrassing shabbiness of the capital city of a G7 country, and yes, partly to flog it off to some fat cigar smoking bloke (stereotype alert!). The point is, in this case, my feeling is, that without public (read govt) input, bringing the conditions of the Tresor up to scratch would be impossible. Note: there's every chance of Tresor re-opening (after some years of temporary residence) in the original locale, after the devt work is done - the public works proposals have some provision (read funding) for community and leisure facilities. Chad is probably my biggest hero outside of techno/house at the moment, him and Pharrell. Pharrell's Frontin' is my single of the year. (313) new-ish record shop in amsterdam
I have to drop a little recommendation for this new-ish record shop in amsterdam. (3 months old) anyone living or visiting should check it out - they have some rare s**t, and we all like the rare s**t eh? It's just near rushhour too, on the next street up from the main post office as you walk up from rushhour - opposite an optician (glasses shop) it was formerly a CD shop, with records in the basement, and now the records have taken up the whole shop. They have a large disco/boogie selection - very very good, lots of rarities - as good as specialist selection you'll get anywhere. A decent deleted techno section (they had a couple of nice original transmat pressings at 15 eu), a load of house, and, to be honest probably more hip hop than anything else (didn't get a chance to go through that) loads of other oddities - (soundtracks/library lp's blah blah) 2 friendly sorts working there - very knowledgeable too, with obviously some hot sources. their prices are the going rate (i.e. relatively expensive). But I bet my last euro that you'll find something in there you've been looking for for a while. so, I apologise as this is OT, or has shag all to do with the list, but hey - it's just a little TIP! (313) conversation w/ a deepseadweller; jms tribute pt2
james marcel stinson 14 sept 69-3 sept 02 in celebration of james' life, i've made available a 36 minute long excerpt from our conversation of december 13, 1999. available for streaming and download. if you'd prefer, there is also a text version of this. if you can, i'd recommend you listen to the audio version as you can much better get a sense of james' passion from actually hearing him (over reading my transcriptions in the text version; plus the text version is not a transcript of all of the audio version). headphones are recommended as, aptly, the waves and wind can be heard throughout, quite fitting when talking to a drexciyan, methinks. much like you're listening in on the conversation through the aquatic aether. http://cognitionaudioworks.com click on listen or read take care. andrew duke ps if you listen, listen straight through. there are 3.13 seconds of silence in the introduction and the extroduction. out now: Environmental Politics http://and-oar.org Take Nothing For Granted http://acidfake.tk Sprung http://bip-hop.com http://warprecords.com/mart/music/release.php? cat=BLEEP12fc_type=CD *Canadian electronica album of the year nominee* More Destructive Than Organized http://staalplaat.com Highest Common Denominator http://pieheadrecords.com Physical and Mental Health http://dialrecords.com 74'02 (split with Hypo) http://tsunami-addiction.com Waveforms: Halifax Electronic Music Compilation http://cognitionaudioworks.com
