(313) Derrick May Remix
I just saw a new Derrick May remix of Strings Of Life in HMV Oxford St, London, the other day. Does anyone know what this could be? They said it was 'tuff-sounding' and out through Greyhound distribution. It was not the Danny Krivit edit I was told, although the guy didn't seem to know much when I asked about that. There was no Transmat logo, it was just a white label. I am a bit suss on it. I didn't get to play it. Also I hear one of our fave 313 icons is doing a Fabric mix-CD to be released in Jan. How cool is that? ;)

Re: (313) Cai, Max 404 and Shawn Rudiman
nice reviews tristan, thanks. rantA lot of people seem to be getting really lazy with their Theo Parrish/Moodymann comparisons. There is a whole lot more Detroit house out there than those two, and while I love them, the overuse of them as 'style markers' is becoming nearly epidemic! Apologies for the rant, it's just that it's almost like these two fellas have become marketing icons in the underground, and it cheeses me off a bit to see a record like the above lazilly lumped in with them when it clearly sounds a whole lot more like NJB./rant Yes. I agree! although, I presume record shops do this to try and sell more records (or is that what you're saying). For example, MM and Theo Parrish way out sell most 'underground' stuff, so I guess shops use them as comparisons in the hope that the hundreds who buy their records might get on something less well known. Must be frustrating though for some record shop people. For example, I know heads into electronica who will buy every theo parrish/moodymann record going, but they wouldn't touch other 'deep house' records, or garage records with a barge-pole. or any of the disco re-issues for that matter.. (which I find quite funny really). Imagine, you've got a great record you want to push and try and sell a few copies of, and people keep knocking it back cos it ain't from detroit or whatever. frustrating. alex _ - End of message text This e-mail is sent by the above named in their individual, non-business capacity and is not on behalf of PricewaterhouseCoopers. so, I was wondering. a few peeps have mentioned that the buzz classic LP Relics is being repressed. a few have said to me it's a bootleg, and then others have said it's an official thing (alot of shops are under the impression that its official). so, which is it? also, I heard there was a few more buzz bits to come, does anyone know which ones they're planning on doing? and, another q. I like to see this kind of releases to resurface, but I am affraid it will be a little too late... because most of the people these days have ever heard of Transmat. do you think so? I always thought that maybe it's legacy was still holding on pretty strong. but, then again, I live in a pretty insular world sometimes, virtually all of my friends like this music. _ - End of message text This e-mail is sent by the above named in their individual, non-business capacity and is not on behalf of PricewaterhouseCoopers. (313) Fw: DAMON WILD 'DOWNTOWN WORLDS'
DAMON WILD 'DOWNTOWN WORLDS'ARTIST: DAMON WILD TITLE: DOWNTOWN WORLDS LABEL: KANZLERAMT FORMAT: CD / 2xLP CAT. NO.: KA101 RELEASE DATE: 13 FEBRUARY 2004 Damon Wild presents his third long-player, though his first for Kanzleramt, debuting impressively with a diverse and incredibly well-executed album of electronic music. It follows the ODowntown World¹ single released almost exactly one year previous. Wild¹s musical pedigree spans back to before the turn of the nineties when, as a 15 year old, he was a DJ on his hometown radio station in Louisiana. Despite being somewhat less than a geographical hotspot for Techno music, Damon helped introduce the locals to a mixture of early Acid House, along with the music of electronic pioneers such as Kraftwerk and Cabaret Voltaire. In 1990, Wild made the move to New York the city he would become most synonymous with. He began working at Frankie Bones¹ legendary record store, Sonic Groove, and from behind the racks he came into contact with some of the burgeoning N.Y. scene¹s key players, leading to his own first release OUnleash The Groove¹ on Strictly Rhythm. In the several releases that followed, Wild settled into a style of hard, dark, acid-driven dance music and, in 1992, established his first record label Experimental. Around this time, he also achieved success with the anthemic ORave Generator¹ single, as part of the OToxic Two¹ duo with Ray Love. The success of this track was mirrored, if not dwarfed, by it¹s popularity in the UK. Some people may remember the act¹s appearance on Top Of The Pops! The Experimental label was responsible for bringing artists such as Freddie Fresh and sometime collaborator, Tim Taylor to the world¹s ears, but Damon is probably best known for this work on his second label, Synewave, which he founded in 1995. This imprint released some of the most seminal techno cuts from the New York scene in the nineties (and beyond), and provided an opportunity for even more Producers to show their talents, including Steve Stoll and Morgan Geist. Damon has only released one of his three albums on his own label, with his second appearing on Music Man, and this third effort on Kanzleramt. The album opens with the heavy breakbeat slam of Mr Mean. It¹s far from downtempo, but there¹s a sense of restraint in the production that delivers it¹s body-moving charge without ever feeling the need to bring out the sledgehammer. Indeed, this is a comment which could be used throughout this album. Like Dis has more of a conventional drive, and utilises a vocal sample that¹ll be familiar to fans of older techno tracks. This is a seriously smooth flowing dancefloor techno track, that embraces house elements to create a very effective groove. OK, OK, so I said the album never resorted to sledgehammer tactics... I didn¹t mention anything about a road-drill, which is what the sample in Crankpot sounds like. It¹s used to pretty innovative effect, though, adding to the insistent bounce of the track. The title, Silver, certainly goes somewhere to describing the shine of the synths on this record again, as Techno goes, it¹s very easy on the ear. Perfect dancefloor material, without alienating the home listener something that¹s pretty typical of Kanzleramt, in general. There¹s more of a tribal feel to the percussion on Halflife, but it¹s delivered with a gentle shake. The chiming synth tones go further in expressing this album¹s deeper sensibility, striving for (and successfully achieving) more than mere dancefloor DJ tool status. Downtown World Part 1, first instalment of the title track, is a taught, rhythmically complex number that conjures the dense, textural styles of producers such as Surgeon, yet there¹s an ever-present brightness that maintains an uplifting presence, throughout. It doesn¹t get much sweeter than Tribecca a track which just oozes late night sophistication. The interplay between the musical layers teases your ears seductively, blending melodies and perfectly subtle percussion to create one of the album¹s highlights. After which, Traveller instils more of a menacing urgency. Wild is never one to resort to lazy use of a sampler, preferring instead to craft his tracks¹ atmosphere from tense drum and synth programming. The explosive charge which this tune hints at is never full realised, opting instead to maintain a sense of tension. Downtown World Part 3 is sonically quite different to it¹s predecessor, but is has a similar nocturnal, urban feel to it. This album is dedicated to Damon¹s young daughter, Eva, and this comes to light particularly on this track, named after her. The glow and sparkle of the music captures the innocence of childhood pretty well. He¹s clearly a proud father, and she¹s got cause to be proud too, on this evidence. Re: (313) Derrick May Remix
The Ashley Beadle 'live' remix is the only one I've ever heard that does any justice to the original - simply because it doesn't try to just copy it or re-edit it, but instead takes it's inspiration from it and crafts it into something totally new - what a good mix should always do in my opinion. I'm not a huge fan of remixing generally though, and you're always on extremely thin ice reworking something as cherished as that - so you'd better do a seriously good job! i don't think any of these new ones have come even close cheers - matt - Original Message - From: ryan burns To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ; 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Wednesday, November 12, 2003 4:15 PM Subject: Re: (313) Derrick May Remix one of my friends from chicago played that strings of life rmx at the club and i wasn't impressed. it was very IHR sounding. nothing beats the original. i love the flamboyant mix by Mayday also. burns If you are talking about Stacey Pullen yep its true and following that a 2CD from Craig Richards. Some more excellent Detroit style happenings in Glasgow! - Original Message - From: Jamie Thomson To: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' Sent: Wednesday, November 12, 2003 1:28 PM Subject: Nurture - Sat 6th December Arne Weinberg (Keynote, Down Low, Starbaby, Headspace) Support from Nurture residents:- Dan Monox Jamie Thomson (Basic Level) Saturday 6th December 2003 Club 69 (underneath Koh-I-Noor) 40 Back Sneddon Street Doors 11pm Admission - £8 (group discount available - it is Christmas after all) Bus departs from Air Organic - 10:45pm Contact:- [EMAIL PROTECTED] This month we are joined be Arne Weinberg on his first visit to Glasgow. If you are a fan of deep techno with it's influence pointing to Detroit then Arne will be someone you would love to see. One of the most promising talents to emerge in the past couple of years, Mr Weinberg has a lot to offer and will be hopefully getting into the festive spirit as this will be the last Nurture before Christmas. Here is some background on the man himself. Born 1973 and raised in south Germany Arne was influenced as a young kid by his mother and her varied musical tastes. After several excursions into different musical styles such as Death Metal and Hip Hop in his teenage years, Arne finally discovered Techno music at the age of 21. Since that time he became infected and soon started to deejay. After practising his turntable skills at home he became a resident deejay at the Depot club in Tuebingen, where he ran amonthly party event for 5 years. There he met with artists like Oliver Kapp, Fabrice Lig, Shake, Pacou, and lots of others, and developed his passion for thedeeper shades of techno music, especially those coming from Detroit. In 2000 Arne decided to make his first attempts at producing deep melodic techno himself with only a computer, and soon realised that he needed to get some real gear to express himself authenticly. Armed only with a few pieces of gear he started to do his first real tracks and soon got a record deal with the Frankfurt based label Propaganda. His first 12, the Through the colonnades EP was released in early 2001 and gained some good reactions such as getting charted by Laurent Garnier. Becoming far more influenced by deep electronic music, Arne began building his studio and his own musical style. Soon he got in contact with Otto Koppius, labelowner of the Dutch Groundzero/Keynote label, and got his second release, the Snowflake EP in 2002. After that a lot of 12s followed, released on labels such as Starbaby, Down Low, Headspace and Technoir Audio (together with Shawn Rudiman). In 2004 Arne will release his first full length album on Keynote and many other projects can be expected from him in the future. He is now living in the Frankfurt area where he concentrates on his own productions and the deep sides of soulful electronic music.
Re: (313) Derrick May Remix
-- Original Message -- From: Matt Chester [EMAIL PROTECTED] The Ashley Beadle 'live' remix is the only one I've ever heard that does any justice to the original - simply because it doesn't try to just copy it or re-edit it, but instead takes it's inspiration from it and crafts it into something totally new - what a good mix should always do in my opinion. I'm not a huge fan of remixing generally though, and you're always on extremely thin ice reworking something as cherished as that - so you'd better do a seriously good job! i don't think any of these new ones have come even close i actually didnt like that mix at all. i did pick up the krivit edit that just came out, but mainly because i dont have the original. plus IMO he did the least possible amount of stuff to it, mostly just making it a bit deejay friendly. tom andythepooh.com

Some more excellent Detroit style happenings in Glasgow! EVERYTHING good happens in Glasgow! nah, seriously, for as long as I remember, glasgow always had quality music on. Even the bigger clubs seem to play good music, and have good guests. weird that no one ever mentions it really, it just seems to plod along, quality event after quality event. far better than anywhere in UK outside London anyway. p.s. did anyone go see aux88 in london last week? _ - End of message text This e-mail is sent by the above named in their individual, non-business capacity and is not on behalf of PricewaterhouseCoopers. mebbe this is a US/UK thing, these re-releases will sell loads surely maybe i suffer from the same problem as alex tho :) robin... (313) Stuff records #1 ep
I just noticed on undercity's distribution website that a limited amount of copies the Stuff #1 EP suddenly have resurfaced!!! I know it's more IDM, but don't disregard those marvelous Electro tracks of Sparky and Redshift... It's not a big suprise that the people at Warpmart were raving about this release. ; ) Dr. Nutcracker

To true alex, we are spoiled a bit up here. Although I must say I am bored of the bigger clubs - it takes a really special guest to get me to voulentarilly go to one of them. the other week I was dragged (it was a friends birthday) to Slam's flagship monthly night @ the arches. Dave Clarke was playing live, John Carter, and some other people - I really couldnt get excited about it at all and ended up sitting in the bar drinking until I was allowed to leave. Made up for it the next night though with Shawn Rudiman live @ Club 69 venue then nipped off to Glasgow to catch Common Factor ;-)) Cheers BT Some more excellent Detroit style happenings in Glasgow! It's been a long time since I saw a club kick off like 69 did in London, or met so many people who were still totally passionate about their music - none of the crap defeatest, whinging attitude that we seem to have to deal with down here!

Mother India! Pah- the Spice Garden rocks like no other (and its nearer my house)! I've never eaten at the Spice Garden but Mother India certainly rocks big time so sounds like I need to check it out! The Wee Curry Shop on Ashton Lane (or Buccleuch Street for the original hardcore 10-seater home-made vibe) is also well worth checking out...

Re: (313) relics repress other buzz q's
the CD's (Buzz vs DFC) had different tracklistings as well The Buzz Relics CD-version is the very best of all these Relics releases.
