Re: (313) futuristisms online?
nice one. very much enjoying this CiM bizness (on the second playthrough, actually) and yeah, diggin the yotoko to be sure-- quite a diversity of rhythms and some pretty imaginative stuff. (ihmo, domu's just killin' it.) that starfighterz ep is also really cool. just about the right amount of broken for my tastes. sound-wise, it doesn't seem to break new ground as much as the yotoko album, but does a really nice job taking atmospheric detroit techno even further into the future. i'd love to have a couple hours of this stuff on my iPod for workin'. (this is what i imagined/hoped that Nu Era 'Broken Techno' record would sound like before i heard it.) -d --- Phonopsia [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: - Original Message - From: Hans Veneman [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: dave cronin [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Tuesday, December 09, 2003 10:23 PM Subject: Re: (313) futuristisms online? I like his stuff too, he has a sense of fun. That Chems record was probably boring to start with. His Holly Valance remix is great. The album he did before Kittinz was great but London Recs bungled the release in the UK. I believe he's working on a new album and involved in the Duran Duran comeback (I hope they go back to their roots, no bad rock) and the P Diddy house enterprise. -- From: Tom Magic Feet [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313 mailing list 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) felix disrespecting nina simone was re: Alton Miller Date: Tue, 9 Dec 2003 9:09 PM I also think a lot of Felix's stuff over the last couple of years has been great, but I don't think he's exploiting the glitz s**t. Presumably this is a reference to his Kittinz Thee Glitz album, which was something of a surprise hit and so has led to lots more production opportunities for him. I can't see anything wrong with that myself. 'Course he does dodgy mixes here and there, no-one's great all the time: his mix of the new Chemical Bros record sucks the big one, for example. But he does some crackers too, such as his mix of Iggy Pop feat Peaches 'Motor Inn'. As far as I'm concerned, Felix rocks. My 2p, TOM Sorry to be a purveyor of bad taste ;) Maybe Felix sould've left Nina alone I can accept that. However, as to a separate point, I personally like allot of what Felix has been doing over the last couple of years. I think he has managed to make house music allot more accessible for many people who grew up during the 80s and parted ways with dance music when synch-pop and new wave faded. Although Felix has sort of shamelessly exploited the whole glitz s**t, I don't believe he's all about that either. Some of the mixes and sets during the last few years really reached deep into the dark internal realm that much of the best techno also mines, meanwhile crossing genres and generations. On a different subject, I would really like to hear that King Britt track. Which song does he remix? What label is it on? (313) D Troit exhibition opening this week @ new NYC gallery
NYC 313'ers might be curious to check out the event below, at a new Tribeca gallery called Gigantic Artspace. in addition to the fine work by several Detroit-area visual artists, the audio installation will feature nearly 20 hours of Detroit-related music, including six hours of Detroit electronic tracks. BMG of Ectomorph, who needs no introduction to this list, will be spinning the afterparty via his laptop, a rare opportunity for New Yorkers to sample a taste of the Cannonball experience. the show will be up until the end of January for those who are interested but hate the enticement of free drinks. . . anyone curious about track listings feel free to e-mail me. take care. later, mike D Troit CURATED BY TREVOR SCHOONMAKER December 11, 2003 January 31, 2004 Gigantic Artspace 59 Franklin Street (between Broadway and Lafayette, south side of the street) RECEPTION THURSDAY, DECEMBER 11, 6-9PM (opening sponsored by Tanqueray No. Ten) After party w/ DJ BMG of Ectomorph at MI-5 (52 Walker St. between Broadway and Church Street) Gigantic Artspace presents as its inaugural show, D Troit, a group exhibition curated by Trevor Schoonmaker. D Troit examines the city of Detroit and its specific socio-political conditions that have given rise to new forms of cultural and artistic production. The collapse of the automobile industry, the 1967 race riots and the ensuing white flight from the city to the suburbs gave birth to a center of urban decay and desolation that once was a model of the modern industrial city. But within this failed utopia a new generation of artists and musicians developed who are a product of and explore the specific history, urban development and cultural memory of the city of Detroit. They are the cultural residue of the city affectionately known as Motown, The Motor City, Detroit Rock City, Techno City, or simply the The D. This exhibition is not a comprehensive show representing the city of Detroit, but a sampling of the diverse body of visual culture and music in the city. D Troit is proud to introduce the work of these artists to New York City. An exhibition catalogue will be available. Susan Cook: Video montage of family home movies and 1967 race riot footage examines societal ambivalence and expectations and how the past, both real and subliminal, affect the present. Doug Coombe: Haunting photographs of abandoned architecture from the heart of the city. Mark Dancey: Satirical illustrations from the co-founder of the influential underground culture and music zine, MOTORBOOTY. Andrew Dosunmu: Hot Irons is a poignant documentary about the world of African-American hairstyling, as explained by five Detroit hairdressers in preparation for the Hair Wars convention. Tyree Guyton: Work from the Heidelberg Project, a community revitalization art installation, which has drawn international attention to the plight of Detroit's forgotten neighborhoods. Kenjji: Drawings from the Afro-Futuristic WitchDoctor comic of black empowerment, a work for the disenfranchised. Thom Klepach: Lightboxes investigate the beauty of Detroit's culture despite rampant corruption, discrimination and environmental degradation in the urban center. Mark Powell: Striking photographic portraits of people from downtown Detroit. Thomas Rapai: Paintings of isolated motels embody the fallout of Detroit's utopian ideal and the modern automobile industry. Mike Rubin: Music journalist and editor of MOTORBOOTY has compiled a historical overview of the finest Detroit area music of the last fifty years. Trevor Schoonmaker is a Brooklyn based independent curator and co-founder of the art consulting agency, Associated Projects - www.associatedprojects.com. (313) Blaze - My Beat remixes
I've been listening to a few different mixes of this tune and I really have to wonder why would someone put a basic plodding 4 beat without any accents under a vocal that says as we dance to a beat that seems out of time to the one you feel in the metronome of your mind - does it offend you that our rhythm looks strange or causes your thinking to be rearranged and then follows up with so as you struggle to catch the rhythm with your feet ask yourself can you dance to my beat yeah I can but I don't want to because your beats are so damn pedestrian/vanilla - I wish these people would actually put some thought into these remixes instead of just laying down some boring thud thud thud beat and think that a deep house tune underneath is going to cut it - a message to any future remixers of My Beat - listen to the lyrics and then do something as dynamic as the original that reflects the message of the tune! (313) Darryl Wynn - KMS Soul in Motion mix
Hello 313 Peepz, HELP Just listening to that amazing 'Soul in Motion' mix that D.Wynn did for the KMS website. I'm trying to ID 3 tracks on the cd and was wondering whether anyone out there could help me in my quest? The anonymous tracks are as follows ~ *Track 2 on the CD: Jazzy, percussive house number with the looped female vocal it's the sound of a power *Track 7 on the CD: (I think ? - it's the one between the Africanism/Bob Sinclair and Osunlade/Power to Conquer tracks) Silky smooth, funky, jazzy irresistably funky house number which has a female vocal (sounds like Sade - could this be the Kenny Larkin 'Give you My Love' remix on Illegal Detroit ?) singing on the intro all i thought that you'd remember, wasn't really all the meaning of it all, what we have has grown to a deeper thing goin' on. every minute of the moment of the time we were around and left alone..all I want is you to know that is that you're not scared... *Last track on the CD: Very uplifting classic vocal, garage track with the lyrics to be without soul (KMS also plays this on his Deep Cyberspace KMS mix Vol 1) Anyhow, I know this is a long shot (and sorry to all those list members who i've bored to death, that don't know any of these tracks) but i've been after these tracks for nearly a year now and if anyone can help PS - I've been able to ID track 1 (in addition to the Africanism and Osunalde tracks) - it's Stacy Kidd 'Jazzy Days Vol 1' !! Chris (aka: D.Wynn track trainspotter !!!)
