his new record, popkiller, is terrible. The songs themselves are alright, if a little redundant considering his body of work. But then he went and put vocals on top of all of them, ah, his vocals make richie's vocals on closer seem deep. Techno guys should probably never add their own vocals on their records. Luke Slater another good cause in point.Maybe having a sample of somebody else saying something would be alright, I like and play alot of music with distorted and messed up vocals/call & response. But I sort of don't want to know techno guys take on poetry, love, or mysticism. Well I have to take that half way back, I can take Dj rush's meandering babble any day. Generally let the music speak for itself. tom

I hear you on that one - he seems to have gotten on the electroclash bandwagon just about when it had reached the end of the line. His best work (imo) is still "Sex with the Machines", "Simulationszeitalter" (love this), his work on Elektrolux, and my favorite of his is actually not an electro cut but the more minimal techno "Warm" on i220. I'm not sure what he's doing - I don't really pick up his records anymore because, quite frankly, I'm tired of hearing electro that is all dark and scary doom & gloom sh*t like most of what I've heard lately from PSI49Net. Re: (313) records
what i've picked up recently: Matzo & Pauli EP on Viewlexx -- special order; i had been looking for this for months. This must be a repress as my copy is on plain ol' black vinyl instead of the translucent red from the first run. :( it's still a great record -- i love the slower, melancholy disco A-side. Rhythim is Rhythim "Beyond the Dance" reissue A Certain Ratio - "The Graveyard and The Ballroom" CD reissue. I can't believe I've never delved into their backcatalog earlier. Great combination of albums to put on one disc, as you get the archetypal Martin Hammett production on the first half and a really good live performance on the second. Syncom Data "Solid Industries" on Bunker -- solid indeed, very dark and sparse and slamming. bet those responsible have been listening to a lot of Rob Hood records lately... UR "Windchime" -- two sides of greatness. gorgeous "Strings"/"Jaguar"-esque A side, dark fast electro on the flip. both sides scream Detroit louder than a photo of Hart Plaza. - jobot - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Thursday, July 22, 2004 7:42 am Subject: (313) records > Well folks, I'm losing the will to live here. > Not bought any records for ages. > Have hardly picked up a record for weeks. > > I noticed a couple of bits that could be interesting. > (not listened though) > > 2 new Neroli releases (Yotoko & Basic Laws 3) > And also a Tread release on 3rd Ear. > > So, anyone have any news of good records to cheer me up? > > Alex > > _ > > - End of message text > > This e-mail is sent by the above named in their > individual, non-business capacity and is not on > behalf of PricewaterhouseCoopers. > > PricewaterhouseCoopers may monitor outgoing and incoming > e-mails and other telecommunications on its e-mail and > telecommunications systems. Re: (313) miss kitten ? (kittin!!!!)
i think Miss Kittin became internationally "famous" around 1998, with her participation to the electro-rock revival, "electroclash" or whatever you call it. But for me has always been a "rave" DJ. I think i first heard her name around 1993, and i remember back in thoses days on french radio, they used to call "electronic music" as "rave music", neither techno nor house, just "rave"... And she was one of the very few girl DJ spinning "rave music". So when she did "champagne EP" with the Hackerin 1997, for me it was just 'fun'... but..Miss Kittin stays in my heart very "techno"...and not this electroclash leader...NOWAY !!! ! ! ! She loves to make some very groovy techno sets with thoses chicago clapz and bang boom !!! :) - KiDD*e*
Re: (313) miss kitten ?
She hates the electroclash tag. I like her album. It's good electronic pop for grown-ups and has some experimental touches. It ends with some searing techno. She's in a league of her own, like Bjork. It will be fun, maybe trainspotters will find fault, but she's fun. > Hey I was hoping that folks on this list would have an opinion about > whether it is worth going out of my way to see miss kitten? makes sense. it lit up faster than most sounds, so it makes sense that it would burn out quicker. that's not to say that there's not still tons of people doing the robot out there. from what i've heard recently, quality music is still taking some of the melodic vocal punk-rock elemnents and doign cool stuff. although- it mostly by people who were doing ggood stuff before the fad. but people's ears are more open to it now. see: new two lone swordsmen cobra killer sex in dallas !!! a lot of stuff on output recordings a million other things 'm blanking on right now. first off, matt dear is not to be missed. nice tips! Voltage certainly has something cool going-- peeps on this list should especially dig the Double Identity "We Play the Music" release-- the A side is a groovy broken acid thing with a bit of a Ultramarine guitar thing. i think Double Identity is Tomas who's also the editor at XLR8R. afaik, Voltage artists have included Jack Dangers and Ben Stokes, as well as a remix by Isoul8 (aka Volcov). particularly happy to this stuff coming out of SF. haven't been hearing much exciting outta here except on Ubiquity and the odd Tweakin release.--- Jason Brunton <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Also- New Juan Atkins on New Relgion is due on > Monday (no surprise to > you Alex!) as well as his new one on Subject > Detroit. > > Theo's Ugly Edits 5, 6 and 7 are also due tomorrow. > > Didn't hear anyone talking about those Abe Duque > records either- 7 with > Blake Baxter and number 8 are both MILES better than > anything else I've > heard by him before and the new Blake Baxter on Mix > is top summer tune > action (Blake For Love- genius!). > > Also check anything you can find on Voltage- an > amazingly diverse label > from San Fransisco who mix Techno, Dub and other > electronic forms like > no-one else I've heard (I believe their next release > features Titonton > Duvante but everything else on the label is by > Fresh, New Producers!) > > The new Mills on Axis is pretty fine too > > So is the next release on SoloAction from Germany > > So is the Maurice Fulton mix of I:Cube's Vacuum > Jackers > > So is the Maurice Fulton mix of Fred Everything on > 20/20 Vision > > New Dabyre of Ghostly too > > Loads of good stuff out at the mo! > > cheers > > Jason > > PS I am playing at the Liquid Lounge on Saturday > night if any > listmembers are in Glasgow- its both Tom Churchill's > birthday AND mine > so it should be a night of musical mayhem and > celebrations! > >
(313) zer0 g showcase in NYC friday
Friday July 23 ***THE BUNKER*** UPSTAIRS: Kassette (Record Camp | NYC), Irwin Irwin creates very danceable live electronic music using his electronic drum kit, theremin, electronics, and laptop. He has collaborated with everyone from the Beastie Boys to John Cale to Fred Wesley. His live sets are very improvisational ... much more "live" than what usually passes as a live electronic music performance. http://www.irwinmusic.com/ Kassette is Dei Lewison and Zach Clayton. They create innovative soulful electronic music with laptop and live vocals. Dei is best known for her work as a vocalist for Metro Area. Zach studied the music of John Cage at Oberlin, and went on to study with Lamonte Young and Elliott Sharp while composing his own music, which was performed by the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra. Together they create beautiful music that references many cool things, but is totally unique. http://www.kassettemusic.com/ DOWNSTAIRS: gys (zer0 g Sounds | Boston) live pa Local Fields (zer0 g Sounds | Boston) live pa Smartypants (zer0 g Sounds | Boston) We are thrilled to present a night of deep dubby techno with some of the key artists on the Boston based zer0 g sounds label. gys released the first record on zer0 g, which immediately caught our attention with it's huge dubbed out basslines. well the 3 chairs triple is pretty good (though could have been a 12 and had the tracks u need on it. gotta disagree with that. the only track i didnt like on there was the one i already had "3 chairs theme" and thats the only reason i didnt like it being on there : ) i think the reason this is on there is that some people had skips on the original 12 i'm sure my 12 was ok tho robin...

Re: (313) miss kitten ?
actually, going back to what I just said, it's far more likely that the advances go up as the LP deals progress. e.g. first LP, £100,000 advance, 2nd LP £200,000 advance etc... as the deal progresses, and the band get bigger, it's far less of a risk for the label to say 2nd LP - £200,000 as they already know they're on to a winner if the LP gets taken up. so, in reality, while a million pound figure is banded about, it's possible that they saw virtually nothing. I'd be very very surprised if they got £200,000 first advance.. nice to see the list alive again, I was going out of my mind. _ - End of message text This e-mail is sent by the above named in their individual, non-business capacity and is not on behalf of PricewaterhouseCoopers. >what the hell where MoS smoking when they agreed to that deal? >if marketed correctly they could probably sell one more but 5? >the amount of money MoS rake in from those crappy 'Best Ibiza Party >Anthem' cds must be huge. It's a lot more complicated than it appears. Of course, I don't really know, but would take a relatively well informed guess at this, as its pretty standard for bands of that nature. the million pound figure comes from a deal that would include I think 5 LP's. But, and the big BUT is that they'll take the first LP, and the rest will be an option to take the LP's. E.g. MOS tie them to their label, and they can't take any new LP's anywhere until MOS have said "no, we're not going to take this LP" MOS have first option at what I would guess at 200,000 advance per LP. So yeah, in theory its a million pound deal, and creates publicity, but in reality in fact they're only committing to one LP, and first option on the next four. I think that's a pretty standard deal. Although £200,000 is a pretty massive advance for first LP. Hardly anyone gets that on their first LP. any clearer? ha ha, I doubt it! _ - End of message text This e-mail is sent by the above named in their individual, non-business capacity and is not on behalf of PricewaterhouseCoopers. Re: (313) records
2 new Neroli releases (Yotoko & Basic Laws 3) just heard clips of that yotoko 12, sounding as atmospheric as moodymann but with a different take on the percussion. And also a Tread release on 3rd Ear. So, anyone have any news of good records to cheer me up? well the 3 chairs triple is pretty good (though could have been a 12 and had the tracks u need on it.like the rotating assembly erm six pack :) ) that splinterfaction 'ultraism' remixes 12 is pretty good (curtin/lig/$tinkworx rmxs) umm but yeah not a lot has come out in the last couple of weeks robin...

Yep - MoS licensed their album from Gigolo and then spunked a million on an advance for the next album, then the bubble burst, the mascara ran and their were tears before bedtime. Also check anything you can find on Voltage- an amazingly diverse label from San Fransisco who mix Techno, Dub and other electronic forms like no-one else I've heard (I believe their next release features Titonton Duvante but everything else on the label is by Fresh, New Producers!) The new Mills on Axis is pretty fine too So is the next release on SoloAction from Germany So is the Maurice Fulton mix of I:Cube's Vacuum Jackers So is the Maurice Fulton mix of Fred Everything on 20/20 Vision New Dabyre of Ghostly too Loads of good stuff out at the mo! cheers Jason PS I am playing at the Liquid Lounge on Saturday night if any listmembers are in Glasgow- its both Tom Churchill's birthday AND mine so it should be a night of musical mayhem and celebrations!
