(313) new der zylkus
hey folks- Just listened to the new der zyklus *teaser* at Formic website. Im not feeling those tracks at all. But if you like your other zyklus records as much as I do, you will probably want to listen anyway. Has anybody heard the new album in its entirety? Has any of their older material found its way on the new album? In that case I would certainly give it a listen.Im crossing my fingers, but Im not to pleased from what I've heard.

hang on hang on hang on Ken and evryone, w there :) I for one get hounded for my emails that I send to my friends, the reason is that when I write my emails as we all do, I tend to speak it out in my head as I would if I was speaking to them in person but email never ever conveys this and so everyone reads the email in their own style. So a sacarstic email unless read in a sacarstic manner will be read in the manner of the person at that time ,same with a serious email, sometimes if I am in a comical mood I can mis-read them... this sadly is a problem on emails, it will never go away so lets be too jumpy, surley there are other things to worry about :) your humbly Ian -Original Message- From: Ken Odeluga [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tue 10/08/2004 09:38 To: Robert Taylor; jason kenjar Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: (313) RE: do not hate on discogs How about doing us all a favour Robert and pressing 'delete' before you send your ill-considered rude and sarcastic comments in the first place? RE: (313) convextion
I personally wouldn't download an mp3 of an LP which hasn't even been officially released yet. But then any mp3s I have ever dled have been at the sanction of the artist or they were the only form the track was in. I dont think Mislav was asking to download it Martin (I could be worng). He is correct in that it was floating about on P2P a while ago (Check the LD archives ;-)) then either JT or Minto came onto the thread and asked if the sharing could be stopped and it was. I wasn't having a pop and I may be wrong, but I pretty good at being wrong ;) I also can't check ever single thread on LD - I find that it pretty much looks after itself. I was more interested in peoples views, I know that I buy more records when I hear something in a mix but I do refuse to download stuff that hasn't be cleared. My history is in Typeface design and the amount of times I've seen my work used by people who I know haven't bought the typeface really kills me sometimes, although it's great to see my work used by Bowie, B12 and even Shaggy!!! can't wait to hear this. regarding p2p file sharing of unreleased material, i don't condone people stealing other peoples' material. but at the same time, i believe i have the freedom to download material because i only play vinyl and will ultimately have to buy the record anyway. i know the titles i will buy when they come out, and may want a listen before shopping. also, a bit of laziness when it comes to encoding vinyl contributes to my support of sharing music on p2ps.
Re: (313) convextion
mislav -- the next convextion release (dLvext2) is a 12 as E.R.P. (his electro/techno aka, last seen on sean d's original matrix label) and should be out late september/early october. we're also hoping to release the convextion album before the end of the year. if you go to the (really out of date) dL website, there are some previews if you go to the audio page and click the little logo that says upcoming, and also an e.r.p. loop playing on the contact page. site should be updated soon, sorry... dave -- that's true about the thread on LD, tristan was nice enough to point it out to us. we don't mind when our stuff ends up on p2p after it's been released, but in this case, someone actually hacked our server (our own fault for leaving an easy backdoor) and stole the files and put them on p2p. it was 3 cd's worth of music, most of which will not even be on the album/released -- but gerard did not want it made public in any case. no biggie tho. i doubt many people even got ahold of it. re mp3 consumption, i completely agree with ani. i download mp3's and i make buying decisions based on what i download. i still end up blowing all my spare change on records whenever i can. it's also usually hard to find mp3's of new records until months after they are released (if at all), unless it is something more popular. so unless you're really patient, it's still easier to just buy the record if it's something you really want. album rips are easier to find, but many labels have done a smart thing and release their own albums onto p2p, in either low quality, or special edits, or with annoying voice-over promo in every song. they beat mp3 groupz to the punch and before you know it the p2p-tailored versions propagate like mad and are all you can find -- this was the case with kerrier district, amp fiddler, and lots of hiphop i check out in mp3. good strategy i think, and we might do it with the connection machine and convextion albums in a bit. also btw there have been several reports out this year, i think one australian, one from harvard, and one from unc, that cast serious doubt on the assumption that mp3's hurt cd sales. i'm not really sure how that translates to dj music (vinyl), but somehow i don't think ableton etc has made vinyl any more obselete...buyers are still out there, it's just a tougher competition for their wallets/pocketbooks blah blah! jt -Original Message- From: David Beattie [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Aug 10, 2004 6:56 AM To: 313 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) convextion I dont think Mislav was asking to download it Martin (I could be worng). Re: (313) convextion
Martin, Not to belabor the point, but I think your original judgement was a bit harsh. You are just wrong that people don't use mp3s to find releases to look for in the store. I do that. If I have heard the mp3 and liked it, I'm much more likely to buy the vinyl. If we take the downlow release for example, I know it is run by list members. I certainly wouldn't want to cut into their business and I know things are tight. HOWEVER, I don't recall if I've ever heard Convextion, and there's not much chance I'll see it in the local record store. The best promo they could do for their release would be let me hear an mp3 of the record, as I will seek it out if I really like it. If I don't hear it, how am I going to know that I want to buy it? The only other possibility would be getting the release on some kind of radio where I might listen and say what was that?! and be on the lookout to purchase. Somehow, the independent label has to connect with ME (not me personally but as an interested music consumer), so that I know what is out there that sounds good that I want to buy! ~David -- Original Message - Subject: Re: (313) convextion Date: Tue, 10 Aug 2004 12:06:45 +0100 From: Martin Dust [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: David Beattie [EMAIL PROTECTED] I wasn't having a pop and I may be wrong, but I pretty good at being wrong ;) I also can't check ever single thread on LD - I find that it pretty much looks after itself. (313) P2P
i agree with ani below. thing is though if you want these tracks for playing out, or whatever, mp3s (unless the very minimum of 192k, and even then) just won't cut it. it has to be be a full wav/aiff. and do you trust th person who ripped it to do a good job of recording it in? (uness ripped off cd of course) i view the p2p dl's as just a way of hearing a full preview of the material really (like you can do on any record store but with short low quality clips). once heard an you like, buy it. the dl'ing of stuff off p2ps of underground labels is basically stealing. i know i know i've heard all the arguments about how this shti should be free etc etc. but we aren't talking huge record conglomerates here (dl'ing the latest missy elliot cd is a far cry from dl'ing a downlow release). in terms of underground labels we are talking people like us just scraping together cash to get a run of 500 records out. sometimes selling parts of prized record collections on ebay to do so. to steal off people like that is wrong and will be to the detriment of our scene. ok, i've gone off on one there where it praps wasn't necessary but i wanted to get that off my chest. i am not saying that p2ps are wrong or anything like that (though replace missy elliot with cubase and downlow with ableton and you have my views on cracked software) but i think people if they dl the latest underground release off a small label and they like it and play it then they are obliged to buy really. sharing of mixes etc on p2p (unless it's a proper release off a cd) is ok tho and is what i use p2ps for when i do. robin... can't wait to hear this. regarding p2p file sharing of unreleased material, i don't condone people stealing other peoples' material. but at the same time, i believe i have the freedom to download material because i only play vinyl and will ultimately have to buy the record anyway. i know the titles i will buy when they come out, and may want a listen before shopping. also, a bit of laziness when it comes to encoding vinyl contributes to my support of sharing music on p2ps.
Re: (313) convextion
You need to accept that you and I aren't everyone - you really can't speak from the perspective of one on this because the facts are very, very different, I've just watched a friends album hit the P2P and that fact that he's got 10,000 D/L's from one site alone does kinda please him but it doesn't feed the baby and his sales haven't gone up - the halcyon days are over. I think you'll find that this is now the norm, sadly. I've been trying to think of a good MP3 model for our label for months Martin On 10 Aug 2004, at 16:33, David Powers wrote: Martin, Not to belabor the point, but I think your original judgement was a bit harsh. Re: (313) convextion
just to serve as another data point. i absolutely do buy records after I've downloaded the mp3. if i download it and listen to it once or twice i don't buy it. if i listen to it a bunch i really do want to track it down. the local shops here in san francisco don't really stock the deep techno, and i'm not usually satisfied with a the 20 sec needle drop sample, so getting to listen to the mp3s while I work is the best way for me to find the stuff I love. --- Martin Dust [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: How do people feel about request like this?
