I am majorly confused. How can you re-edit a song without permission. I had a friend who used to do those old ulti-mixes things and from about 85' on they were legally forced to license everything. It's strange that they can do anything to a Rick James for example and then sale it, even if it's just hard quantizing. Which leads me to my next question. I don't think bootlegs and edits are really comparable. edits are alterations to the complete track. that is you don't have the split elements (seperated bass, drums, synth 1,2,3,etc.) to work with. Technically speaking, edits don't have any connection to bootlegs or legal releases. It's purely a engineering/mixing term. Much like dub (that's a whole other thread though). Whether the original artist/label wants to give the editing artist access to the original splits will determine if it is a remix or an edit. A remix would mean that the person doing the remix had access to the original split channel recordings. Chances that a bootlegger had access to these is slim unless they were stolen from the artist or studio. Bootleg is a legal term. Not a term for style of editing. It's just a way to define the way in which it was distributed and under the condition it was made - not the actual process in which it was made. MEK

Re: FW: (313) phylps trak sampled on a subliminal record
the buyer didnt say what maurizzio say in the email as far as sueing them is concerned. from what i could tell, they were pissed, obviously. but thats all i know. i would go ask him, but i really dont want to press the issue too much. i guess there was no reason to open my mouth about it in the first place, considering thats all i know. i was mainly just pointing out that news has travelled from my post on here, to andrew duke, to BC themselves, and then back to the buyer here. the only reason i said anything is because they asked us about it, which i can only assume means they are taking further action and werent letting it slide by. derek. What's so great about that? Call me old fashioned, but since I already have the necessary titles on the list found below, as a consumer, why would I care if these titles are now available on bleep? As a label co-owner I would need to research if such a service would be beneficial for our small operation. But does this type of service actually dissuade those sites such as jet groove (or whatever they are called now) from pilfering legal mp3s (or other unauthorized mp3s from P2P networks) and selling them without permission? jwan Bring the Fun In!
