Re: (313) new records

2005-03-03 Thread James Hurlbut

Vince Watson - hybrid reaction ep - ingoma

I picked up this one up after hearing Vince Watson's name a few times but
never checking him out.One side feels too much swedish wall of compressed
bass for my tastes, but the other side with the conga samples, flittering
hihats and surging chords does the signature detroit techno funk thing well
for me.

Post Office EP - telegraph

Akufen, Villalobos, luciano, and dan bell? woot woot. Solid deep and quirky
grooves. Dan Bell is feeling kinda herbertish with what I assume are rhodes
piano samples given the track titleĀ–Rhodes 2. Akufen's got his trademark
skippy grind on with a track that sounds like its based on the sound of a
record slowing down. Villalobos is meaty with deep bass but a little
boring. Overall the record sounds like the funkiest bits of Cologne.

black by birth feat ronyx - get it right - mainsqueeze

wow, this is what those people call real music, you know, with voices that
sing more than three words and instruments and stuff. But the IG Culture
Candela Allstars mix is truly touching. It's salsa broken beat, but it's
good. It starts out with dark sparse beats to a bluesy song of hope. The
hand percussion gradually makes it way in there until 2/3 of the record in
it's full on buena vista session. It's like house but less shiny so the
hiphop kids won't feel embarassed.

Thanks for this link.

While we are still discussing (are we) in terms of
somebody-meets-somebody, this sounds a bit like the earlies meets dribs.

I've been caning lately all the earlies stuff that I could find as well as
all the Skam (well mostly bola) stuff I could find. Lucky me, Skam has a
very good webshop and the good people in piccadilly have been most kind
when it comes to the earlies :) Friend of mine introduced me to Bola in
year 2004 and I've been trying to find something like that ever since.
Dribs' Open Log book is somewhat in that vein and I liked it _very_
much.

Can somebody point me to some producers/labels that sound something like
aparat/dribs/bola?

Cheers,

@KJ: Is Bola playing live much these days? Dunno if I've seen him on a lineup
in the last two years since he had to cancel his ATP performance due to the
birth of his child. I figured he was fathering these days. Maybe the new album

I've heard Feel The Fire fated on here several times - to the extent of:

So been and bought it second hand, not felt it, come back to the list to see
if I got the wrong mix but no guidance was forthcoming.

Now I've listened to the mix on the Planet E Classics series which hopefully
is a OK one.

Can ANYONE explain to me what it is that's supposed to be good about this
record? I know we've all got our own tastes, subjective thing etc. but I so

2005-03-03 Thread Odeluga, Ken
I quite like it. I heard it on a mostly cheesy Network compilation and
it stood out. I admit, it's not all that deep but it's the production
(natch) which lifts it above the usual syrupy vocal/garage house stuff
for me. I like the sharp vocal samples on the mix of it which I heard
(sorry not sure which one, but the track listing of the re-release looks
comprehensive, I think the mix I heard should be on there). That and the
drum programming will mean that I'll probably pick it up. If I'm
remembering correctly it'll be a good thing to use between 'house' and
'techno' in a set and interesting to hear in its own right. But the
above is just my tuppeny's worth of course...

Go to the Faith (or whatever page)
Right click the link, save target as, save it wherever (eg. desktop)
This gets a 50ish byte .ram file
Right click again and open with say notepad
There's the URL of the actual audio
Paste this into a page of HTML (if you don't have Frontpage or

Either preview the page you've made or save it and open with Explorer

Now you have the actual (presumably several Mb of) audio (I know this

However it's still a .rm or .ram file
Now you can use Slmon's http://www.jummpa.com/fredown2.htm to convert

(this last is the only part of the process I haven't tried yet as
it's still
downloading (very slow) and I'll want to back my machine up before I

 blue arsed fly?

I run about like one most days if thats any use to you Kamal.

Nah they did an ep for ferox called in the bag it's got a track on there
that's legendary to some. Made famous by one of atlanta's underground house
dj's named Jim S. he's awesome and this track is too. Even though he's sold a
ton of his records now. He still won't sell me this one. I think I found it on
vinyl dj though. That and metroplex 12 (with Interference / Electronic / What's
the Game / OK Corral). Might be buying it before you get this. Sweet!

I think blue arsed fly was landstrumm and somebody. IIRC

Aha! Found a link and confirmed the artists. Here's the link:
http://www.planetxusa.com/pub/audio/djram/1995/118674.ram
And it's landstrum and vogel. The one I want is the original of in the bag.
It's the 3'rd one sampled (they don't even get to the strings!). Checka.

I also liked his Computer Rockers stuff, some of the stuff he did for
Ersatz is really cool too. I know he is not breaking any new grounds
here but it still sounds so good. I agree with the MPC Tracks too,
pounding techno-bass if you are into that stuff :)

actually, got to say that Ron Trent's mix is not the best track on
the 12, don't get me wrong, it's good (though not his best by any
means), but 'Happiness For All' is a really wonderful peice of music
with that particularly unique feel that Patchworks seem to be able to
conjure. Check it! - these guys are bloody good

I wouldn't read too much in what he is saying there. Sounds like he was
in a pretty depressive mood when doing that interview. He also states
that Juan Atkins should burn in hell for naming the genre Techno :-)

I particularly like the bit when he is talking about the new music
coming out as a big pile of crap and that the pile of crap was growing
to be a vulcano of crap and that the vulcano just started erupting...

Mind you, this is well before stadium trance and progressive!

MOBIUS BAND: City vs. Country CD (GI-41)
OUT FROM 8 MARCH

Mobius Band has a penchant for sonic squiggles and krautrock beats, but
it's clear that gigging with the likes of Broadcast and Broken Social Scene
has polished its gift for crafting gentle electropop songs.
-Time Out New York

Seamlessly wedding blippy electro-pop with hazy guitar theatrics, Mobius
Band will surely charm shoegazers and club kids alike
-Entertainment Weekly

Near-flawless in its execution, City vs. Country is at once traditional and
progressive, easy to listen to, and difficult to ignore. 8.0/10

Dubbed out blasts of errant machinery and cooling beds of synth bits
combine to form a cohesive and brilliant fusion.

(313) new Jeremy Ellis

2005-03-03 Thread dan

What ho!

The new Jeremy Ellis aka Ayro LP on Ubuquity FINALLY arrived this
morning from Ubiquity after some typical British Postal Service
shenanigans. Just giving it a preliminary listen at the mo and my
first impression is: sweet as!

Nice mix of broken beat, latin and Detroit style jazzy soul + even a
couple of more upbeat numbers (there's a track called 'Lil 808 Thing')

Fans of this sort of thing would do well to track down the new Dego
project - Silhouette Brown, it's vocal lead jazzy soul, but with the
kind of excellent song writing that you'd expect from him + that
irresitible Twisted Funk 313 influenced production style - nish! (in
best radio DJ voice).

BTW, have rather belatedly booked tickets for Berlin/Tresor on the
11th so see some of you down there I hope. Would be nice to meet up
with other list peeps during the day, so drop me a line offlist if
you fancy it (Francis?)

Best

Dan.

picked up

Syclops - Mom the Video Broke (Tirk) Wow, Mr. Fulton is a genius. Freaked
out and spacey beats and massive funky acid basslines. B side quickens the
pace with practical drum bass tempo and live (?)jazz drum rhythms.

Dusk - Aquarian Project (Peacefrog) Seems my local shop has fallen back a
bit on new Peacefrog releases and this one has been sitting in the bins for
a good long time. I have to admit it took me a while to give it a good
listen. Glad I did, Shadow Boxing is one of those Basic Channel/Chain
Reaction inspired deep trancey groovers. Don't recall right now the tunes
on the other side.

New World Aquarium - Luvin' U or was it Heavy Metal (?) anyway - loved
the long track that's pretty much a bit of atmospheric sound, a few bleeps,
and a beat that fades and fades and fades to nothing. Fantastic. Was
looking for newer releases but apparently small European/UK labels don't
get ordered very often. Shame really.

Cool. Would love to hear more about Graca on Ferox. I love his 'pineapple'
track.

The orange Fusion is on Ferox, with a decent smattering of his styles at the
time, including a hyper-detuned Detroity thing that I'd overlooked for ages.
Also got a big, slow 808-powered electro thing and a Hyperactive-ish minimal
track. I'm sure you'd dig it. Think it might be called 'Electric Freestyle'.
