I saw David Byrne perform with Gilberto Gil here in NYC late last year. They put on quite a show! David Byrne dedicated a song to the republican party and George Bush...we're on a road to nowhere, ha! I am getting married in May and my fiancée and I have chosen Naïve Melody (this must be the place) as the song for our first dance...such an incredible song, really great lyrics as well. Highly recommended. Also recommend sand in the vaseline a double CD of their popular favorites. Great road trip music. I always thought Blair Witch . was a great movie for making people aware of audio . . the camera is so raw in that film . but I remember realizing halfway through that their had been no music, only 'real' sounds .. didn't like the movie much .. so closed my eyes and listened to what was going on .. .simon John/Slackonomics wrote: On Mar 9, 2005, at 4:53 PM, Theorema Binario wrote: Apart from the music, i think i will show her some movies, specially Dancer in the Dark. It was one of the most boring and dull movies I've ever had the displeasure to sit through.

don't know what to credit the silence to, but it's certainly not to a dislike or lack of interest. i guess there's recently been a bit of slagging of the stars release, but i think alex is prepared to wrestle anyone in re: sandstorms (which i still haven't heard as it wasn't released when i was last in the shops. we'll see, i'm in tokyo right now and am headed down to cisco this afternoon for a looksee). however... during last year's remix and reissue flurry, it was a friggin CC lovefest on (313). i saw him dj in san francisco sometime last year and his set was pretty much a compilation of the 2003/4 remix action including the cesaria evora, beanfield, busted trees, which was absolutely amazing (for one thing, all that bizness sounds just great on a decent system). i think he also played throw, some 69, demented drums, etc. he's a dead solid dj, and while he keeps it pretty cool up there, he certainly knows how to use the faders to get it going. i certainly wouldn't miss him in a good venue with a good crowd. (though given his name, he's also apt to play at big nightmare clubs. noticed he was at turnmills when i was in london a couple weeks ago.) -dave --- Simon Kong [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: This is the vibe I'm getting .. This is a man who plays Radiohead and Beyonce... kinda defies categories. He's working on new material, that I know. Did anyone hear his remix of hip-hop cat Grand Agent lately? It's on a comp CD that is out through Aussie hip-hop label Obese. Also for Aussie, Recloose tour coming up, and Derrick May playing Fuzzy (and hopefully Melb) in April. i certainly wouldn't miss him in a good venue with a good crowd. (though given his name, he's also apt to play at big nightmare clubs. noticed he was at turnmills when i was in london a couple weeks ago.) cheers thanks for that feedback . we will be in a fairly small club ' 250 / 350 pax it's so touch and go down our end of the world, it's been a long time since a house/techno international even played in the south island. Christchurch is traditionaly a DB city from way back. . I'm lucky enough to support Cral in CHCH, so I've been sweating over a hot turntable ' tonight to try and remember what records sound like mixed .. gack' also doing some lighting production for the event 'and helping my mate with the sound setup ' i think we should end up with about 10 - 14K of sound using double front loaded 18 subs with folded bandpass 15 subs and some 12 and horn ' mid top boxes / i was well impressed with the way Carl used the sound system last time I saw him, so we are trying to keep heaps of headroom . and depth in the sub Ha ' it all sounds so meger ' but it's exciting times in the antipodies I tell ya . .simon
Re: (313) Carl Craig '
he's more of a producer than a dj imo he just plays records, one after the other, with a bit of blending inbetween,. at least he did that the 3 or 4 times i've heard him in house enviroments over the last 15 years. he played all good stuff but as tristan said, it didn't come together (for me, it did for others..) then i've heard live recorded sets where he mixed seamlessly and with a good flow, but zz tracks .. pretty straight techno all the time. i'd go see him and make up my mind for myself. imo, which is armin's
Re: (313) Carl Craig '
I may not have been very clear in my first post, so I'll expound a bit. Carl Craig is and has been one of my favourite artists for about 11 years. I made a mixtape of his music called 'maestro' once upon a time and in my youth even said he'd be the closest thing I have to an idol. I still rate most of his remixes and a lot of his productions very highly but I don't think productions are a very good indicator of performance skill. However, when I first saw him about six years ago I had the impression that he played great tracks but wasn't a very distinctive DJ yet. I saw him a couple more times before the 2002 Planet E party @ DEMF where he totally blew me away, showing that his DJing could equal his productions. Since then I've seen him a number of times and generally rate him highly, may travel to see him, etc. But I think it has to be the right venue on the right night. Like I would never go to see him at Turnmills or Fabric (have actually stayed in another room while he was playing there, etc), and when I last travelled to Brighton to see him I was pretty dissapointed, because the first half of his set had no momentum whatsoever. While he rectified that towards the end it still seemed a lackluster effort. It's gotta be hard to consistently perform well as a touring DJ, but I sometimes get the feeling he may not be feeling it that much some nights. Like all the best DJs in Detroit, Carl can play anything and basically will, even sometimes pushing well past where the crowd will go. I'm not always thrilled with his playing but it's always interesting. -- fh
Re: (313) Carl Craig '
I think my problem is that isn't always the case anymore. When I saw him in Brighton in Nov/Dec the first half of his set was fairly bland, despite following a Harvey-esque DJ. Like I said, he made up for it, but maybe a little too little a little too late. That said, reports of his set in Kings Cross last year were nothing short of stunning.
