(313) black murda discography
I found a self-titled LP from 1971 called Black Murda, an excellent funk-soul band from detroit. As far as i know they are not on discogs, found a little bit on google, but no complete discography. Are there any funk fans out there that can help me fill in the blanks?

Maybe they can do a nice skin care range for the ladies who spend too much time in clubs. And a perfume would be nice... No! An Axis thong ain't right at all! they had a whole heap of art stuff there that you couldn't buy. disk union basically stocks the same merchandise as the submerge store and I worked out it was cheaper to buy from submerge yeah record bag would be cute, maybe some badges. Re: (313) Ultravox
I know, Howard was big here too (everywhere) - but was he recognised as much more than a pop star with a haircut? NME was dominated by jaded punk hacks who dismissed New Romanticism as not cred enough - they preferred Julian Cope and Paul Weller etc. It's worthwhile finding old copies and reading the reviews... for a laugh! When I did the interview I was 'instructed' by the label via the manager not to make fun of him - that tells you something. Hoping to get the article posted v soon. DJs for Eurythmics are mainly local - Askew are you still on the list, help me here would you? I have seen Eurythmics tracks listed here and there, I will have to recall. I know one Melbourne DJ who plays Honkytonks is playing This City Never Sleeps. BTW I recently did an interview with Howard Jones! He is such a cat! It's a real joy interviewing these 80s acts who are now being recognised Cyclone, Howard Jones was massive here! in the charts all the time etc, as a young (very) kid I had all his ahem cassettes. Can't really remember anything dead good he did though (?) anything that stood the test of time (?). hmm, might investigate, but it was all pretty poppy no? can't remember any leftfield kinda dubs or anything. maybe I'm wrong, will look. never bought the 12's at the time, perhaps theres some good instr. on the flips but, yeah, just wanted to mention he was never un-recognised! alex p.s. -- Original Message -- From: Philip [EMAIL PROTECTED] just got a copy of marcellus pittman's 'nyrobi knight' 12 ummm is this record meant to sound like this? track a2 cherry lee in particular, I mean I know some of these peeps like it dark crazy but this is just nuts. the kick drum jumps all over the shop and I really can't tell if it's a bad pressing or if it's actually meant to sound like that. anyhoo 'nyrobi knight' itself is an er interesting track and I can see it working set tho I doubt if you'd want to play it all the way through, it's just a bit too stop/start until about half way through. i didnt notice anything weird about the kicks on my copy. i do love how dirty and nasty nyrobi knight and dirty are. its almost similar to stuff ive been working on in level of grit. BTW, if youve never seen malik play records, you really should. hes f*cking amazing. after seeing him a couple times this past year at the festival and having had a mix CD of his for a while, he's gotta be in my top 3 deejays of all time, right behind shake and theo. also got jerry the cat statements ep on psychostasia, a1 is a lovely percussive abstract groove that one is nice. the jam ive rediscovered recently is that remix on the juju and jordashe 12 on psychostasia. it sounds really hot on a loud system and that sax bit is just stellar. its much more dancefloor friendly than it sounds on a home system. the fxhe comp 1 12 has a cool omar-s track that's an understated (disco?) loop with grinding fx percussion that sounds a bit industrial almost, jus-ed's track 'am mix' reminds me a little of 2nd wave stuff like 'techno 2', it's very nice. 'moment' by young seth is nice but kinda ordinary minimal - is that a Detroit escalator co. sample hmmm? dont know if thats a DEC sample or not, but i thought that young seth joint was the best one on there. very minimal and understated, very reminiscient of just ask the lonely by omar-s (which might actually be eclipsing recloose's dust as my favorite track of the year). i do hope they keep releasing stuff like malik's record and that comp, as much as i love omar-s its always good to have some variety. especially with the super fast release schedule they seem to be rocking these days. speaking of omar-s, that track on 007 is just bananas. again, it sounds much better loud. its so much fun to mix in, those weird percussion sounds seem to catch peoples ear and then the loop in the background builds it up very nicely. super hot. i play multiple fxhe records every time i deejay. theyre killing me right now with the amount of goodness theyre putting out. tom andythepooh.com

Interesting that - I knew of quite a few people who did it but didn't know of they did. For definite? On all records or just a few? Reason I think it interesting is how dope that stuff sounds coming straight off Scion's laptops (and to a certain extent, though not quite as much, on the CD of this) - something I'd always put down to it being straight high quality digital direct to the system. Wonder if they use the records digitised and it sounds so dynamic as they're putting loads of effects on or if they have bits and pieces from earlier in the process of the records creation? Anyway they make the best argument for using Ableton I've heard!

is it maybe as well, because we get older? yeah, I reckon maybe. i don't have the idea there are more bootlegs floating around ehm.. are there? I think in modern electronic music (techno?), theres more around these days than there were. just because the records are getting older and more sought after, and the ebay price explosion of the mid-late 90's didn't help... _ - End of message text This e-mail is sent by the above named in their individual, non-business capacity and is not on behalf of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. RE: (313) legit mp3 downloads (artists get PAID)?
Its an amzing world out there, and any MP3 snobs should stop lording over their vinyl collections, and just take interest in a format that is allowing a huge number of artists to release music to the world. .simon The world is quite amazing isn't it? I was thinking that on the way in to work! I agree about taking interest, but taking interest in a concept and supporting a format (and all it's limitations) are different. I am intensely interested in the concept of fully digital music presentation, but like Francois k said on dhp that time, the concept doesn't really work consistently on the professional level until you start closing in on uncompressed quality (really uber-high bitrates and large files). So I probably won't bother with full steam digital until the format is expanded to include high quality files. Re: (313) Re: legit mp3 downloads
Yes, recently playing at a little house party, what I noticed was that playing direct off my laptop has a different tone quality - basically, there are a lot more highs present on the laptop tracks than on the vinyl. It easy easy enough to EQ the sound system a little so that the laptop sounds more in line with the vinyl playing previously, but if you switch straight out you will hear a definite difference, not really in resolution but all the highs can make the digital sound a little bright if the sound is tweaked specifically for vinyl. Again though, twist a couple knobs and this can easily be corrected. ~David robin wrote: May I be annoying, and raise a technical point here? (313) A reasonable compression rate?
The storage requirements for 1000 records at 24 bit 96 KHz would be astronomical. IIRC, I mixed down a 6 minute track to 32 bit 96 KHz and it was over 300MB! If you actually decide to encode an average of 2 tracks/record that would require ~600GB. 1500 records and you're nearly at a terrabyte (don't even worry about albums for now). Even if you're thinking that hard disk space is cheap these days, the backup requirements are crazy. Plunking that on DVD's you've got an organisational nightmare, and if you're thinking of using a NAS, a terrabyte is bloody expensive. But hell, 32 bit 96 KHz is nothing. Why not go for one of those audiophile formats like Sony's 1 bit 2.1 MHz DVD audio format which is meant to replicate the stream of analogue audio more accurately than larger bit types? No clue what kind of file sizes you'll get with that, but I think it's similar to the 5 channel 24 bit 96 KHz files from that other DVD audio format, which is large. Personally, I reckon 32 bit 256 Kbps mp3 is plenty good with today's compression formats. Has anyone actually ever noticed the difference at this bitrate? That's what I'm using anyway. Getting fanatical about any of these choices is a bit silly if you ask me, as five years from now there'll probably be a new format that poops all over the compession of today and we'll all be glad we kept the vinyls so that we can re-encode everything from the source in the new format. Maybe I'll be done with my current collection by then. ;) @ Joe: I recorded a 6-hour mix to VHS once upon a time. .. i'm using lame LAME 3.90.3 for MP3 encoding using VBR [which in average turns out to be ~200kbps]. been mostly encoding seedee extracted WAVs as well as my own production and i can't tell much of a difference, maybe sounds a little more 'compact'. lame encoding presets are optimized and tweaked to reach good quality/size ratio, the only complaint might be it cuts highs in the name of 'no human is able to hear above 18khz' so you cant encode up to 22khz. btw, the decoder is also important and there's still room to advance. i'm using Mad plug-in for Winamp http://www.mars.org/home/rob/proj/mpeg/mad-plugin/ i guess some lossless format will take over sooner or later as bandwidth and storage makes it accessible already the Sony format you mentioned sounds interesting! i wonder of the way of interpreting and describing audio characteristics there, gotta google it up -- ///Z Tristan Watkins wrote: The storage requirements for 1000 records at 24 bit 96 KHz would be astronomical. Good for that uninterrupted feel. :) Tristan === [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.phonopsia.co.uk
Re: (313) A reasonable compression rate?
seconded! however i'm making use of encoded audio already and most likely i'll have to deal with it a lot during next 5 years, so i'm interested to handle the matter best way possible at any time. ///Z Getting fanatical about any of these choices is a bit silly if you ask me,as five years from now there'll probably be a new format that poops all over the compession of today and we'll all be glad we kept the vinyls so that we can re-encode everything from the source in the new format. My point in a nutshell. And I think that if the current choices don't move me like I want, then I'm cool holding out with my source material. If you should ever finish encoding all your vinyl, please allow me to take care of the disposal...for a nominal fee of course :)

I mean, Dolby AC-3 doesn't have noticeable glitches (usually) and that's compressed 5.1. 1 bit 2.1MHz is 15.2 Mbytes / minute per channel. I assume that's like a 1-bit DAC. 32-bit (floats not ints, I presume) 96kHz is 22.5 Mbytes / minute per channel. 24-bit 96kHz is 16.9 Mbytes / minute per channel. -- /* Halley */ (Halley's comment.) matt kane's brain podcast | http://www.hydrogenproject.com | netradio | on-the-air [EMAIL PROTECTED] || AIM: mkbatwerk

(313) friday question
who will make the last detroit techno record? I've got 10 bux that says I can ruin the genre for everyone

Re: (313) friday question
My tongue-in-cheek response (to un-ruin the genre) says it already happened DJ T-1000 The Last DJ On Earth But that hasn't stopped folks from releasing some fine detroit techno records afterwards. I think it's obvious that it'll be the last DJ left on earth who makes the last 313 record. (Barring space travel, rebirth from watery graves a la Drexciya, etc etc.) Detroiters are survivors, after all. -marc who will make the last detroit techno record? did they split into two different groups? I found a B-boy summit listing them and Medea Sirkas - which I thought was one of their former names. RE: (313) TitontonDuvanté?
Titonton is studiing these last years, so busy with school...But we made two new tracks a year ago...we have to do one or two other tracks to complete a new e.p ;-)...nothing urgent...it will come later... I recall seeing him play at DEMF and since I only own a few records by him I have to ask which of his records does he mix his classical instrumentation in? If I recall he played with a violinist and a operetic vocalist. MEK
