(313) UR - Manchester (finally)

2006-10-25 Thread Nik Stoltzman
I meant to post this on Monday, but you know what it's like...

The most striking thing about the night was the sound-system I’m afraid. I
have to agree with many others and say that it just wasn’t loud enough.
Sure, nearer the front it was much better – but during Los Hermanos it was
rammed in there. For a room that size they should have had some speakers
along the side too. Don’t think that I am one of those whinging types, or –
god forbid – a purist. I just think it should have been loud enough to make
my chest pound, my guts shake and my ears ring for a week afterwards. I was
delighted when I realised that Mark Flash was part of the Los Hermanos crew.
I saw him a couple of times in a teeny tiny club in Bristol about 5 or 6
years ago. A few local promoters had some contacts at UR and got a
contingent to play in this bar for about 100 punters. It was an amazing
night. As a DJ, his style and selection is similar to T.P. Anyway, I
reminisce. I missed DJ 3000 because we were checking out Jamie Lidell who
for me was the highlight of the night. He is an amazing performer. Great
music and a lot of fun. That is the problem with techno – it isn’t all that
fun sometimes :)

Octave One were so-so I thought. I loved the classics, but I was a bit
underwhelmed by the newer material. It seemed a bit ‘techno by numbers’ to
me. By the time they played Blackwater I had lost most of my enthusiasm –
but then I was also knackered and slumped against the bar. It was only when
Rob Hood came on that I picked up again. I ended up leaving before the end
of his set but looking back, I can’t help but feel that I probably missed
out on the best thing of the night in some way.

A good night all in all. And a great cooked breakfast at the Koffee Pot.
Just what you need after a heavy night heh heh.

RE: (313) radio interview about the early toronto rave scene

2006-10-25 Thread Stoddard, Kamal
I'm more blown away by the things I discover existing in the now...

... and the possibilities of what might be out there in the present,
lurking behind something familiar, is more exciting than looking toward
things that might be...one day.

I believe we live in the future, we've just been fooled into thinking
it's still groundhogs day. Most people, while dreaming of a fond past or
a more pleasant future are actually living the same day over and over
and over and over and over again. And that's why they dream doctor.

(( apologies for the mass spammage))

Hello Cleveland 313 friends-

Just a quick email about an event we are promoting in Cleveland tonight
(Wed.Oct.25th). The show is taking place @ B Side Lounge. Los Angeles

their best artists for a 10 date US tour featuring DAEDELUS, CAURAL and

Audiences have been floored by the level of talent involved with the tour.
Not to be missed!

Please forward this email to anyone you think might be interested. We could
surely use the help in spreading the good word.

2006-10-25 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hey Nik

Thanks for the text. Nice to meet you also, even as you said briefly. In fact
you probably had to wait longer outside that pub
then we saw each other later! Sorry about that, I guess you could see from the
amount of us walking down that it took a bit of
getting everybody together, at least we got to say hello then. I thought it
was a pretty good night, lots of people complained that
it was too quiet (apparently they had complaints for those living nearby the
previous week) but I thought it was OK near the front.
The sound in the small room was poor again (as for 3 Chairs) though, spoiling
Jamie Liddell. The biggest disappointment in the main
room was that what looked like a long line up of Detroit acts wasn't really -
i.e. Los Hermanos and Suburban Knight were on stage
together and together totalled 3 people, Octave One was Octave 2 rather than 3
(if you know what I mean) + no Anne Saunderson vox
:-( Rob Hood was the best thing all night as far as I was concerned so I was
glad I was still going strong at the end. Bit cold
too.
Having written this much think I'll copy this to the list as I promised a
friend on the other side of the planet a run down but I
think this is all I'll have time to write.

Hope to see you again sometime
Francis

I think this is a valid comment and I'm not arguing with it. But to give a
comment / reason for it - with me it's probably because
at the time I'm looking back to I heard music that made me go "wow this music
is amazing, it's like nothing I've heard before,
forget everything else this is the FUTURE!!!" And I was totally dedicated to
this amazing new music. Unfortunately nothing
startling has happened since (and I don't mean there hasn't been any good music
since, there has been tons and there still is, just
nothing that makes me think there's a revolution going on like I did then) so I
end up being all nostalgic for 18 years ago even
while thinking I'm into futuristic music!

Was 'James Brown is Dead' considered underground? I remember it being
all over the place in europe.

I never thought so. There were so many hoover eurobeat rave Mentasm clones
coming out around that time anyway and that wasnt one of the best ones to
be honest.

I don't think it was particularly underground in the states either. It
definitely wound up umpteen million 'this is rave XXMMLLIII' comps you'd
find at Best Buy, etc.

I must confess I liked it and played it back then, and a good chunk of the
stuff I liked/played at the time was of this ilk. :/ When you lived in a
place that was fairly isolated from this music it was harder to
differentiate between the good and the bad. It was all kinda cool for its
newness. For me at least. It obviously didn't date well though...

Ha ha I know this record was utter rubbish but it used to give me a giggle if
it came along at the right time (though if I was
already pissed off with how rubbish a night was it certainly wasn't going to
help).
To be fair to it though while as you say there were a million Mentasm copies -
i.e. records with the hoover / mundo noise - was this
one? I haven't got it to hand to listen to (in fact I haven't got it at all)
but I can only remember the breathy / stomping main
bit and there was a silly synth noise in a kind of break but I wouldn't really
say it was Mentasm type.

Berns said that going from raves to clubs became boring. That because you
don't have a decorator "on staff" (?) and you're not "industry", you're
independent, you can't decorate the club differently each time?
Sorry, that's bulls*t and shows how unimaginative he is.
The guys I've been working with have never done a "rave" - frankly we all
hate them and what they've done to our local dance music community (bred a
bunch of candyravers who think that "disco" is "gay music"). The majority
of our events have been in the same club space - a tiny little box. Yet we
manage to make that box look and feel different for every single event. It
doesn't cost us much either. The one guy who is most responsible for
getting the decor and theme... I'm constantly amazed at how he manages to
pull it together and for how little. It's total DIY - no lasers and
spinning lights (except for those he makes!).

All the problems he's talked about that came later - people not controlling
their drug consumption, fights, knives/guns (!), etc. I've never seen that
happen at our parties.
I think it's a result of what your model/inspiration is for your party.
Raves always seem to spiral toward chaos which eventually drags the whole
thing down.

I've always wondered about that tune (never liked it though) - why the hell
would you want to declare/celebrate the death of funk (as that tune is
essentially doing)?
Funk is where it's at and where it came from and continues to live in the
best dance music. Wessel Van Diepen from L.A. Style went on to produce the
Vengaboys so - 'nuff said.

(313) radio interview about the early toronto rave scene

2006-10-25 Thread vergel

I don't know if you guys would be interested in hearing a couple of
stories from one of Toronto rave personalities, but I had Don Berns
(Dr. Trance) in the studio for an interview. We talked about some of
the early raves in toronto (around 1991) and what got us into this
whole "rave" culture.

while trance and rave are dirty words on the 313 list. the stories are
interesting... Don was a alternative rock radio personality in the
90's and before and 'discovered' electronic music. I started going to
raves after getting into the acid house scene. It was pretty wild to
spend some time and review some of the reasons we both got into it.

http://

I've been sharing it around with some of the locals here in Toronto
and everyone has nothing but positive things to say about those early
days. So I thought I'd share it out.
