Very funny and absolutely terrible.

Thanks for passing this on, it made my working morning for sure.
That's probably one of the most entertaining radio interviews I have
heard.

(313) More Wild Kingdom

2007-10-11 Thread Richard Hester
Last week's playlist for the Wild Kingdom is at
http://www.kfjc.org/music/playlist.php?i=28750 . The text for this
week's sermon is taken in large part from the Book of Dogma, the
Evolution/Clone triple-pack reissue, and Autechre's first album, three
releases that dovetail remarkably well together. "The Wild Kingdom" airs
on KFJC-FM 89.7, Saturday night/Sunday Morning, 12A-3A (8A-11A GMT).
The webcast is at www.kfjc.org. Present and past playlists are also
archived there.

We are currently having our annual fundraiser - help us out if you feel
so inclined. We have on-line donation set up at kfjc.org, as well as
some nifty thank-you gifts. Also, if you do tune in, please take a
little time to let me know your locale. I'm also interested in promos
and in promoting local (San Francisco Bay area) techno-type events.
Thanks to those who have sent promos so far.

Love that. Especially the bit with the mirrored hands - great example

(313) Subject: (313) R.I.P. Rob Deacon (Abstract/Sweatbox/Volume/Trance Europe

2007-10-11 Thread Paul Hammond
That's shocking news about Rob Deacon. I was in one of the bands on Sweatbox - A
Primary Industry - and knew Rob well from about 1984 to the mid-90s when I kind
of lost touch with him; we did an album and a couple of singles on Sweatbox. I
think he worked for 4AD when I first met him - he was running Abstract Magazine
at the time and later Sweatbox and the Volume stuff.

They were slightly strange times musically (mid-80s)... bands around that scene
in London, like Meat Beat Manifesto - who Rob launched with a huge amount of
energy & passion - and some of the 4AD bands like The Wolfgang Press, who he
worked closely with, were doing some pretty pioneering things with new
technology, early sampling, electonic dance music etc. etc. A lot of it sounds
pretty dated now I think, mainly due to the production values of the time, but
it was an important stepping stone to what came next.

I've got a lot to thank him for - RIP Rob.

record stores in pittsburgh than any other town in america, by my
estimation. pittsburgh has jerry's, stedeford's, the boneyard, record
rama, the attic, and a few well kept secrets.

I saw a girl with an Amoeba Records book bag the other day and I
wanted one sooo bad.

I love Submerge and SID, but I've always been in complete awe of
Amoeba. The stores are huge and they seem to have nearly everything.
A specialty shop will have more cutting edge dance vinyl, but Amoeba
will have some crazy 5 year old gem you didn't know existed, and sell
it for $3.

That's why Shadow put the Haight Street store on the cover of
"Endtroducing" -- he probably bit most of his samples from Amoeba
records ;-)

Re: (313) Marc Houle: Techno Vocals

2007-10-11 Thread Benoît Pueyo
To me, thats just the result of people having fun together. The problem
is that the'guys' have been doing the same msuic for years, and that
they dont differentiate form each other.

What I find funny in that story is that Im sure it will sell so much,
and will make people scream in parties (of course while hawtin will play
it, any other regular Dj will probably be whistled while playing that).

So yeah the M_nus have fun of themselves, probably they party too much
together, but we all do that with our own friends.

The question is 'do they have fun of the people liking/buying/dancing on
this music ?' Sometimes I feel the answer is YES

Is Houle being serious here? It's like being meta-jaded, I can't
possibly wrap my head around this kind of thing. It's like making fun
of yourself for making fun of yourself, and then laughing at everyone
else for listening to you do it. Or making a trite techno song about
how trite people think techno is? My brain hurts.

From the Minus website:
On "Techno Vocals" (as with all Houle productions) each sound is
perfectly realised, commanding its own space with metronomic
discipline. The rigid drum patterns, analogue explosions, regimented
snare rolls, laser guided effects and delayed bleeps interact with
supreme efficiency, while the arrangement is mapped out with cool,
calculated intent. The result is a totally robust example of A-grade
techno that's really brought to life by the self-referential, pitched
down vocal hook!

Not trying to be entirely negative, it just seems like a case of being
too cool for school and then taking it to some strange other level.
"The result is a totally robust example of A-grade techno that's
really brought to life by the self-referential, pitched down vocal

They can't really be serious about that, can they?
Just curious if anyone has an opinion about this kind of thing.

That's terrible news :-(
I have some deep love for the Trance Europe/Atlantic Express compilations.
The whole book with CD thing is a great concept and while it didn't
originate with Mr Deacon - he did it so well.
I'd pour over it for hours whilst listening to the CDs. The Pacific State
compilations were where I first got exposed to Ken Ishii and some of the
best Japanese techno I'd ever heard.

(313) If Music ...

2007-10-11 Thread Michael . Elliot-Knight
Oh yes! Yes, indeed. When I was there in December (and about as close as
you and I came to meeting in person so far) I had a spare couple of hours
between working time.
"If" was on my list and it turned out I was in the vicinity. Jean-Claude
was the best. He set me up with some excellent 7" soul/funk/reggae
records. Scored a few strictly limited releases. Before I knew it I had
piled up a stack of records that I just *could*not* leave without. Spent
all my money there but it was worth it. He's got a way of reading a
person's taste and once he's locked on to your style, you better have
brought some serious cash.
Set me well on my way to where I am at musically today.

Next time I'm there well, I'm there. ;-)

Those are half of the appeal of a Grain record aren't they. I like
the 'testing your mobile phone' one :))

John Kennedy is back in Argentina at the moment.
The Big Apple stock is slowly being sold on the net and Arthur is remixing
pop tunes under various guises.
I hassle him every time I see him to make some more Grain tracks.

used to be on top of Big Apple shop and I think he co-run the label.

If you put it, I will also auction my Fat Cat sticker that they sent me back in
'93... It is the cat logo, in black.

Oh, and if you have got one of theirs first t-shirt (the one with the telephone
in front and fat cat records in the back, blue dotted ink in blue cotton), I
can pay top-dollar for that! (which I can easily gain back by auctioning my
Axis chocolate coin)... ;-)

(313) Moodymann on Radio 1

2007-10-11 Thread Nik Stoltzman
Hey,

I am sure some of you will be interested in checking out Moodymann on the
Gilles Peterson show. It
was broadcast earlier this morning, but is available to stream from the site
for the next 7 days:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/gillespeterson/

Apparently, it is his first radio interview..? I haven't listened to the whole
thing yet but it
sounds interesting. Plus the music is first rate of course.

Cheers,

N
